In the different positions that I held while with GRLA I was apart of their marketing team where I collaborated on new material to be distributed, helped to prepare and deliver proposals of various size and scope, organized media for client presentations, and worked with the principals on any graphic work such as posters, banners, brochures, etc. As a designer I was part of various size project teams and worked through each phase of a design project from schematic to design development, construction documents and construction administration. The firm worked exclusively in AutoCAD but I was part of a team to start implementing Revit into the work flow and I was the only team member to complete a small project in Revit for the firm. I began in the firm as an administrative assistant where I maintained office filing, ensured general organization of supplies and materials, catalogued documents, transcribed field reports, and developed office standards.

The salon project was the first project that the firm chose to implement Revit Architecture. I am the only person in the office with the greatest knowledge of the program so 85% of the construction documents I created in Revit. I collaborated with my project manager to incorporate additional details and MEP drawings. The initial design was produced by the firms Design Principal. My responsibility involved taking existing condition measurements, developing the existing drawings and putting the new interior floor plan into Revit. I did however draft and plan out the wall elevation for the “Salt Cave� so the wave pattern could be achieved.

Theater and Multipurpose Center Hopkinton, MA Restoration and Addition

My involvement with this project started midway through the design process. Another associate started the Revit model and developed the basics. I went in after updated materials, added details such as windows, beams, lighting etc. The post processing was a joint effort between myself and another associate. My contributions to the renderings totaled 50%. Following the design phase, I became the only designer working on construction drawings so with guidance from my project manager the construction documents including the elevations below are my work. The project is currently in a Bid Phase and work on the drawings is expected to continue

Office Building and Warehouse Norwood, MA New Construction

Initially, I started in the middle of the design process for this project, with the model already completed. However after significant design alterations done by the design team, a new model was necessary. I developed the site model and building model for the redesigned project. I was responsible for the exterior and the lobby space of the building. Post processing was a joint effort between my design partner and I.

I made the decision to return to school to obtain my Masters in Architecture in order to work toward becoming a licensed architect. Participating in the Penn State Masters Program was a change from the environment I experienced at the Boston Architectural College in that it is a full time program which allows me time to work almost exclusively on studio projects as the supplementary classes often support the studio project. I have had the opportunity to learn new skills in the woodshop and with model making as well as developing my presentation and graphic material skills.

As one of my larger full design projects, this studio allowed me opportunities to advance my skills in Revit by choosing to model and diagram completely in the program. This project invited us to design within a historical setting that was connected in a unique way to the history of architecture. As a hub for integrative learning and study, the addition to the Philadelphia Athenaeum included a gallery space, auditorium, short term housing for resident scholars and additional storage and library space. We were able to work closely with the team at the Athenaeum and finished the studio with a reception in Philadelphia to present our projects to visiting members.

The Library of the Long Now Project Semester: Fall 2015

Set 10,000 years in the future, our task was to develop a “library� that would be relevant for years to come. This stemmed from the Long Now Foundation’s mission to preserve and maintain time and history. Our site was an established landmark, home to a rock shelter where they have found artifacts dating back 16,000 years. My design was reflective of the sight and the other elements on the site. I wanted to make a connection with the rock shelter and did this by orienting the main views in the building toward that building. The shape of the building was derived as forms of the earth relating back to the land the dynamic natural topography.

Geared toward the a younger generation of workers and commuters, the neighborhood of Vinegar Hill in Brooklyn, NY was the setting for the ‘Bicycle City’ we were designing. A multi family, multi use project incorporated specific unit types for bikers and commuters so that they could house their bikes specifically. The project also incorporated public spaces to integrate the new biking community into the existing one. My goal specifically was to create an urban environment that would be able to grow and expand into a small city within itself as the neighborhood redeveloped. The integrated system of units created various “meeting points” for residents, aiming to encourage the friendliness of suburban neighbors.

Travel Abroad - Japan and South Korea Project Semester: Summer 2015

Part of our studies include the option for a 6 week study abroad semester. The 10 days that I spent in Japan during that trip were memorable and influential.

Project Semester: Fall 2014

During our first semester in the program we spent about 8 weeks studying a assigned house and translating the elements and concepts to our own folly design. After studying and analyzing the Eames House, I developed a small studio space that could be transformed with the seasons and the needed applications. The transformations occurred through the translucent planes that were all hinged on one side and could be “open” allowing for a larger entertaining space and gallery or “closed” when the space translated into a personal studio space during the cooler months.

An education from the BAC is unique in the fact that I learned both in the classroom and in the work place. Through a Co-op program we were required to fulfill part of our credits with work experience. Having this opportunity allowed for a more well rounded education as I was able to implement the theories I was learning into practice. My degree in Design Studies with a concentration in Architectural Technology allowed me to experience design as well as study more in depth the technical side of the field. Studying in Boston also was important to me with its rich architectural history. As many of our instructors were practitioners as well we had an inside look into some of their projects around the city and we were able to experience more about design and architecture through this interaction.

Site and Project Analysis Project Semester: Fall 2010

Project Mediums: Building Plans - Hand drawn Model - Chipboard and Modeling Wood

Stemming from the previous semesters avenues of inquiry, this project was primarily directed at site and building analysis. I was assigned the Berkowitz-Odgis House by Steven Holl located on Marthas Vineyard. I spent time collecting building data, site information, developing a set of plans and elevations and performing analysis. We were required to identify three questions we wanted to explore and answer them through experiments. (See example below) Upon the completion of the experiments and with conclusions drawn we were asked to take a step further and transform the building while still maintaining its original purpose (not shown).

As a project to meant to work with in the boundaries of a unique site, this design project was meant to develop our skills of site analysis and program development as we were basing our design on a ceremony or tradition that we were familiar with. I chose the oplatek, the Polish Christmas tradition of breaking bread. The actions of going from one person to the next sharing a piece of your wafer and then coming together as a group in the end are what drove the design and circulation of this space in downtown Boston.
