MPFL Reconstruction is indicated in patients with lateral patellar instability, caused by tears or laxity of the MPFL.
In light of the fact that the MPFL has been identified as the primary passive restraint to
patellar lateral displacement, reconstruction of the MPFL can provide the best clinical outcomes by restoring the normal limits of patellar motion.
The Medial Patellofemoral Ligament (MPFL) is a ligament that attaches patella (kneecap) to the thigh bone (femur). Any injury or a direct blow to the knees can dislocate the patella and in turn damage or rupture the ligament, resulting in an MPFL injury. If the injury is severe, then MPFL reconstruction surgery may be required.
