InterRail differently

The Brief The brief is to create a promotional poster for InterRail that excites and intrigues its audience. InterRail is an experience that allows you to travel through different cultures and cities and explore Europe; the poster should be creative, visually appealing and intriguing to the audience. InterRail’s promotion is quite low key so this will be a way to create a renewed excitement. The design can be subtle or abstract as long as through image or text it is clear that it is informing the audience about InterRail, the more interesting and visually appealing the better. InterRail mostly appeals to a younger audience, ‘youth’ price being under the age of 25 and cheaper than an adult, you should consider this in your design. You will need to find out the relevant information about InterRail and what details are appropriate for the poster. Think visually about what could best represent the InterRail experience.


Brief 06_InterRail research

Research As the brief was to create a poster promoting interrail in a visually exciting way I first decided to get some research on interrail to see what would be relevant to include in the poster/target audience etc. Interrail is popular amongst young people as they have special prices for people under twenty six, it can also be seen as perhaps a more affordable way for a student/young person to get around Europe, this was something I tried to consider whilst coming up with design ideas.

Primary I think maps suit the brief in terms of visuals, I think they always look good because of the detail and almost complicated style, and obviously this is one of the first images you think of when thinking about travelling etc. It would also be ideal for interrail as you need to use the map with all the train lines on to plan your journey.

For the design I wanted to focus on photographs/maps and tickets, as I think these are good aesthetics. An initial idea I had was to use photographs and lay the interrail map outline over it, the map would be subtle but the main focus would be the images of places whilst on interrailing.

Obviously whilst considering the project I will draw on my own experience of InterRail to help support the ideas of the design. I will use photographs and other things such as tickets and maps that I used whilst on InterRail to help benefit the designs.

Photography These are my photographs I took whilst InterRailing around Europe. These images were not taken digitally which I think adds to the style of the posters that I want to create. I also like that the images aren’t very obvious tourist attractions, however still displays obvious cultural imagery such as the classic Parisian rooftops etc. I think this allows the posters to not look like an obvious tourism promotion and more of an intriguing cultural journey around Europe.

Final Designs

These are my three final designs that promote InterRail in a different way. The small amount of existing promotional material that InterRail offers isn’t very intriguing for its audience, nor does it look exciting or reflect the type of experience that the company offers. When designing these a main focus was to concentrate on the type of audience I wanted to attract. As sales show it is popular amongst students/young people (young person ticket up to 26 years old) which is why I have tried to design it in an intriguing and visually enticing way using interesting photos and montage techniques. I kept the information limited, only including the essentials and then a reference to the website as a lot more information can be found there. I also included a new caption for the company, ‘discover the rail you.’
