Our Lady of the Sacred Heart College Volume 15 Issue

3rd November 2011

Dear Parents/Guardians, Staff, Students and Friends of OLSH Unfortunately our Year Ten REMAR group (19 students and 3 staff members) has been caught up with the flight disruptions that occurred over recent days. As a consequence the students and their supervisors will not be back in Alice Springs until tomorrow, landing at 10.45am (QF 796). It has been a challenging time sorting out alternative arrangements, and we are grateful to Br Mark Needham, Ms Eilis Black and Mr Stacy Mutuota who have accompanied the students during their time away. We are also grateful to the Marist Brothers in Melbourne who helped out with accommodation and to Mr Michael Knight, our REMAR Coordinator, who spent many hours on the telephone making sure that our people were looked after. A reminder that applications for College scholarships and bursaries should be returned by tomorrow, Friday, 4th November; students currently enrolled in Years Six, Seven, Eight, Nine, and Ten, are eligible to apply. Application forms are available from our receptions desks at each campus. These awards will be announced at the College Presentation Night at the Convention Centre on Friday, 9th December.

The Year Twelve Graduation Mass will be celebrated on Friday 18th November, followed by the Valedictory Dinner on Saturday 26th November. The Parents and Friends Association had a very productive meeting last Thursday, 27th October. The proceeds from the fete and the raffle have been tabulated and the final result is in excess of $40,000. At the next meeting on Thursday, 24th November, the members will decide the priority for allocating the funds to projects across the College. If you have any suggestions as to how the money should be best allocated, please come along to that meeting, at the Bath Street staff room. The monthly Bath Street campus Mass will take place tomorrow morning at 9.00am. You are most welcome to join the children for this special gathering. Best wishes

Campus News: Bath St It s been a busy week with very unpredictable weather! Just when you think we are moving into the summer months, along comes some rain and some cooler temperatures. These changes often mean an increase in illness, particularly colds and flu. We also are in the throes of a chicken pox outbreak, so please be vigilant with your children.

FIRST FRIDAY MASS Please join us at the Church tomorrow at 9.00am for the celebration of First Friday Mass. It will be a special time for our Year 3 First Communicants as they take the Eucharist for the first time in front of the campus community.

BANDANNA DAY A big thank you for your support of Bandanna Day last Friday. There were many colourful bandannas about the campus last Friday and the SRC sold almost all of their stock.

BOOK FAIR Many, many thanks to all of you who supported our Book Fair last week. The sales were great, and the library will be able to purchase some new books ready for next year.

2012 ENROLMENTS AND CLASSES There are a steady stream of enrolments for next year, and we will soon be looking at class placements for 2012. Please contact the office of you have any concerns regarding the placement of your children next year. I am happy to make an interview time, or chat on the phone. Please ring Christine on 89508666.

BATH STREET REFURBISHMENTS Our new art/science room is complete and is now ready for use. Many thanks to Mr Ian Clarke for coordinating the major works, Mr Gary and the maintenance crew for moving the furniture in and out, and to Mrs Maddocks for the many hours she has spent getting the space ready for classes. Please come in and have a look it is bright and sparkly and very welcoming. As one project finishes, another begins! Next week from Tuesday onwards, the Hall will be closed for the installation of ducting in preparation for 6 new airconditioners. The contractors hope to be finished by Friday, and the installation of the conditioners will take place over the weekend. YEAR 5 2012 PARENT NIGHT Last night went very well and it was great to see the students attending. For those parents unable to make the meeting last night please feel free to contact me for a visit. If you have a little spare time in your day just turn up at Traeger if you wish to have a look around. The information covered last night will be available in booklet form from the Bath St front office as of Monday.

MELBOURNE CUP Congratulations to Lachlan Keeble and Caiden Taylor who took out the awards for Fashions in the Hall on Tuesday. They were against a very strong field but just too good on the day.

AUSTRALIA CURRICULUM 2012 We are continuing our work to have this available for our Traeger students at the beginning of 2012. We begin our change by implementing the Maths component in Semester 1 and then English in Semester 2. A change of this nature is not something to be taken lightly if we are to maintain our standards for our students. All staff, led by the Traeger Teaching and Learning Team, are actively involved to make sure we are on the money for the start of 2012.

STANDARDISED TESTING This week students will undertake PAT-M(aths)testing across the Campus. Other PAT tests have already been administered, with other tests to be carried out before the end of the year. New students to Traeger in 2012, will also complete the tests. New Year 7s (2012), will complete a test on November 17, 3.30pm-4.30pm. On Move Up Day December 1, the students will complete two more sessions of testing. Why the testing: The results of the testing show individual students strengths and weaknesses very clearly and in a targeted manner. The use of this data to assist students is wide reaching. Student specific areas can be targeted, teacher planning is assisted, grouping of students can be more accurate, students receive feedback on areas to work on, students who need support can receive more targeted assistance... and the list goes on. We have collected this data, as well as NAPLAN results, over a period of time, which really helps with future planning across the board. If you have any questions feel free to contact us.

JOFFA- TOONSCHOOL Joffa is back next Monday for his final visit for 2011. In this trip Joffa will spread his magic to our Year 6 & 7 students over 3 sessions. If you would like to visit for a session to see Joffa in action please contact the front office.

RETURNING IN 2012 Could we please make sure that intentions for 2012 have been returned? It is vital that we get these returned. Have a great week, Tony Healy Head of Campus

Campus News: Sadadeen ELECTION OF COLLEGE STUDENT LEADERS 2012 Tomorrow Friday 4th November at 11:15am in the Marian Centre seven candidates for College Captains 2012 will present their speeches. After the speeches the N.T. Electoral Commission will oversee the voting and will count the votes. Good luck to our candidates Celine Ociones, Jade Hatt, Jasmine Ahwah, Carlie Ryan, Gavin Henderson, Chris Davis and Sam Crowe. Elections for House Captains will take place in House Group Meetings in Week 5 or 6. CASUAL CLOTHES DAY Friday the 11th November is the last Casual Clothes day for the year. Gold coin donation to wear casual clothes. Please wear appropriate clothing. BRINGING VALUABLES TO SCHOOL Last week we experienced another theft of a wallet from an unlocked locker. The College provides each student with a locker and it is the student s responsibility to secure it with a padlock or combination lock. Students have been informed on a number of occasions that if they bring valuables to school and store them in their lockers , the lockers need to be secured. Unfortunately the temptation to steal is too strong for some members of the campus. If you can t secure your valuables, it is better if they are left at home.

CONGRATULATIONS Congratulations to Shaun Nelson (Year 10) who has been accepted to participate in a 10 month student exchange programme in the USA beginning in January 2012. Well done Shaun!

YEAR 11 2011/YEAR 12 2012 This year the Campus Executive and the Teaching and Learning Team (made up of the Faculty Heads and Mr Mark Goonan) have decided that current Year 11 students will have their last day of classes on Friday 9th December (end of Week 9). This means that for the last two weeks of the term they will be introduced to their Year 12/Stage 2 courses. It is felt that this will give them a better introduction to the Year 12 curriculum and its requirements. This means that the Year 11 s are expected to attend all of these classes. Have a good week ahead. Matt de Jong. Head of Campus Sadadeen.
