Dear Parents/Guardians, Staff, Students and Friends of OLSH Welcome to Term Four and to the last couple of months of the 2011 academic year, and in particular welcome to any new families who have recently joined the College community. We welcome to the College staff, Ms Fleur Van Den Berg, Mr Andrew Edwards and Mrs Barbara Saunders. Ms Van Den Berg is our new Music teacher at the Traeger campus, Mr Edwards will teach Art at the Sadadeen campus, and Mrs Saunders joins the office administration staff at the Traeger campus. Also we welcome back to the school, Mr John Healy, who has been away on Long Service Leave. Mr Healy has resumed his duties as the Assistant Head of Campus and Religious Education Coordinator at the Bath Street campus. Hopefully the break from school over these past two weeks has enabled everyone to rest and to recuperate, and to be ready for these final ten weeks of classes. The fourth term promises to be a busy time, especially for the Year Twelve students as they prepare for their final examinations. Over the past few days the senior class members have sat for Trial examinations and these have provided a good practice run for main event! Thank you to the teachers who have taught quite a number of extra classes during the break. No doubt these have enabled the students to be well prepared. It goes without saying, but in these last days of formal classes, it is very important that the Year 12‘s persevere with their commitment to sustained and sensible study practices. Year 12 will be farewelled from the College on Friday, 21st October, with the traditional ‗Roast ‘n‘ Toast‘ and then after their examinations, the Year 12 Graduation Mass will take place on Friday 25 th November and the Year 12 Valedictory Dinner, on Saturday, 26 th November. Parent/Teacher meetings will be held at the Sadadeen and Traeger campuses during next week. You are encouraged to take these opportunities to meet with the teachers to discuss the progress of your sons and daughters. It is important that all our students finish the year well and these get-togethers can provide a good launching pad. The Sadadeen (Years 9-12) campus meeting will be on Tuesday, 18th October, while the Traeger (yYars 5-8) campus will follow on Wednesday, 19th October. The Traeger interviews will be held in your child‘s classroom on this night, not in the Hall as previously. Parents are encouraged to bring their child to the interviews and take time to look around at other areas of the campus. Specialist teachers will also be in their classrooms for interviews. Tea and coffee will be available in the Library. Interviews can be booked through the front office in 10 minute time slots from 3:30-5:30pm and 6:00-8:00pm (89 508 555)

Last Monday, thirteen Year 11 REMAR students, accompanied by Ms Lyndal England and Br Mark Needham, headed off to Santa Teresa for five days, to work in the local community. The REMAR movement encourages the students to develop their spiritual lives in the context of social justice, and the ideals of Saint Marcellin Champagnat, the Founder of the Marist Brothers. Coming events include the Transition swimming programme, First Reconciliation in the Church (20 th October, 6pm), the Roast ‗n‘ Toast (mentioned above), and the Year Ten Dinner Dance (22 nd October). College News Coping with Emotional Problems Researchers at Monash University and the University of Queensland will be conducting phase two of the three year research project, entitled coping with emotional problems, which started last year in your child‘s school. This research project will investigate the emotional health and well-being of Australian adolescents and inform prevention and early intervention programs designed to enhance the quality of life of Australian adolescents. We would like to take this opportunity to inform parents who gave consent for their child to participate in this project last year that the researchers will be coming to the school shortly to administer the same questionnaire completed by these students last year. Only students with parent consent at time one of the study will be allowed to complete the questionnaire this year, during school hours, with other participating children from their school. Please contact your school if you wish to look though a copy of the questionnaire. To thank your children for their participation so far, we would also like to offer participating children from each school the chance to win a $25 JB Hi-Fi gift voucher or 1 of 5 iPod shuffles. One voucher will be available to win at each school and will be randomly awarded on the day the questionnaire is administered. If you would like more information or would like to withdraw your child from the project, please do not hesitate to contact the researcher responsible for this project. Campus News: Bath St Welcome to Term 4 – we anticipate another busy and enjoyable term working together with you and your children. I hope that the break was restful and that the children are ready for some hard work and good fun.
MENTAL HEALTH WEEK We were fortunate to receive a small grant from the Mental Health Coalition to facilitate some special activities during this week. As well as focusing on making sure that we are ―bucket fillers‖ and not ―bucket dippers‖ , we provided four sessions of yoga and meditation for some of our Year 3 and 4 students. These sessions were run by Kalika Suich, an experienced mental health specialist and counsellor. Many of the children enjoyed the opportunity to participate in these activities, some for the very first time. On Friday the children will receive a ―bucket filler‖ tattoo as part of our recognition of the importance of good mental health. Please watch out for an article in the Advocate this week.
STAFF CHANGES Next week we welcome Miss Kellie List, who will be working in Room 10 for the rest of the year. Miss Dieckmann is taking some leave to continue her medical treatment, and we wish her well. Mr Healy is back from his overseas trip, and will continue in his role as Assistant Head of Campus and Religious Education Coordinator.
SACRAMENTAL PROGRAMME We are now at the business end of both the Reconciliation and First Communion programmes here at Bath Street. The children will receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation next Thursday evening at 6.00pm in the Church, after spending the day at the Marian Centre in preparation for the celebration of First Communion on Sunday 23 rd October at 9.30am. We ask you to keep these children in your prayers as they take this next important step in their sacramental journey.
TRANSITION SWIMMING Next week our Transition classes travel to the pool for one week of swimming instruction. Notes were circulated yesterday and permission slips must be back tomorrow. Parents are welcome to visit the pool while instruction is taking place.
HOLIDAY MAINTENANCE AND BUILDING WORKS It was a pleasure to come back to school and look into our beautiful newly refurbished art room. With assistance through the Building Grant Authority we were able to paint and lay new flooring, install some new cupboards and air conditioners and make the room look clean and bright. You are welcome to pop in and have a look. The promised new air conditioners for the Hall are still on the waiting list.
CASUAL CLOTHES DAY Tomorrow is the first casual clothes day for Term 4. The students are invited to wear casual clothes and bring a gold coin donation. There has been a significant drop in the number of children who have brought the donation. If the children wear casual clothes they need to contribute a gold coin. Those who do not wish to participate may wear their College sport uniform.

PARENT TEACHER INTERVIEWS These are to be held next week Wednesday, 19th October, 3:30- 5:30 and 6:00-8:00pm. The interviews will take place in your child‘s classroom. Parents are asked to contact the office to book a ten minute time slot for the interview; and then I encourage parents to look around their child‘s area or locker etc. Students are to be present for the interview. Tea and coffee will be available all evening in the staff room. If there are issues that will exceed the allocated time please feel free to make an alternative time.
20TH OCTOBER – ICTL NAPLAN TEST YEAR 6 Students who have been randomly selected for this are bringing home information relating to the test. If there are any further questions please contact Mr Eglinton at the Campus. ALICE ON THE LINE We arrived at the Telegraph Station early Monday morning and put our stuff in the battery room. We then gathered in the courtyard to discuss our groups. After we knew what groups we were in we went to our activities. The activities were team games, Cookie Lloyd Mr. Fields, bush art, Bradshaw kids, Range and Co, first aid, cross stitch and leather work. After the activities we would have either recess, lunch or free time. Our favourite activities were Cookie Lloyd, team games and Mr Fields. On our first night we had our Year 5 Mass. The next night we had a BBQ dinner and had a dance off, it was so embarrassing. On the last day we climbed Trigg Hill and then we got to go home. By Amelia, Jess, Zoe, Nataly One of the camp activities was Cookie Lloyd with Mr. Healy. My group made snacks which were apples, oranges and Anzac biscuits. We had to make enough food for all the Year Fives and we ate them for recess and afternoon tea. Mr Healy found out that he left some of the Anzac cookies in the oven. We took them out and they were burnt black so we had to cut up extra fruit. To end camp we went on a big bush walk. We went past an old cemetery, it was the people that used to work at the Telegraph Station. So off to the top of Trigg Hill we went. We looked down and saw our parents as they drove through the gates. Down we ran to be taken home for a shower and a good nights sleep. First we had breakfast then we rolled up our swags and put them in the battery room. My first activity was first aid where we had to wrap our partners in bandages then they would do the same. My second activity was leather work, we had Miss Carmichael. It was fun because we had to hit letters with a hammer. My third activity was Cookie Lloyd, we made Anzac biscuits and had to mix oats, sugar, coconut, maple syrup and butter with our hands. It was sticky and gooey! The forth activity was cross stitch, it was hard but fun. In each square you had to make a cross stitch. We wrote our names in the cotton then stitched them onto a big cloth. To end the day we had a big barbecue with our parents and families, the food was great. After our parents and families went home we got changed into our pyjamas and went to bed. By Kayla Horsfall 5.2

RUGBY Congratulations to all the boys who played with the OLSH Dragons Rugby League team in the 2011 season. A team with very little experience at the start of the year came on in leaps and bounds to win a few games, a prospect that seemed unlikely at the start of the year. Particular congratulations go to awards winners Danny Glover, Zane Westover, Billy Orr and Ned Hassall. A big thank you to all parents who came along to support the boys each week and a particular thank you must go to Emma Hohn and the good folks at Alice Springs Pharmacy in the Yeperenye Centre whose donation of drink bottles was greatly appreciated. Lastly, thank you to team manager, Miss Stacey Lewis, whose regular supply of oranges ensured a scurvy-free season in 2011. Hope to see you all back in 2012, along with a few new faces. Campus News: Sadadeen WELCOME Welcome to Mr Andrew Edwards who has replaced Ms Kerry Lavell for the next 12 months. Mr Edwards teaches Art to Year 10 – 12. We have no news yet of Ms Lavell‘s baby‘s impending birth.
CASUAL CLOTHES DAY The first Casual Clothes Day for the term is tomorrow. A gold coin donation is required if students choose to wear casual clothes. Please be reminded that clothes should be worn that are suitable for normal classes.
STUDENT CAR DRIVERS Earlier this week the Principal of Sadadeen Primary school phoned me to point out that some of our students were observed speeding in front of Sadadeen Primary school. Student drivers please be advised that on school days between 7am and 5pm the speed limit is 40km/h. The Principal of Sadadeen Primary school has also notified the police who may use a speed camera in the area. All drivers should observe posted speed limits.
REMAR BLUE Good luck to Miss Lyndal England, Br Mark and Year 11 REMAR students visiting Santa Teresa this week for their Immersion Experience. They return to Alice Springs tomorrow.
PARENT TEACHER INTERVIEWS Next Tuesday 18th October from 3:30 till 5:30 & from 6:00 till 7:00pm in the foyer of the Marian Centre for Years 9 – 11 students only. Staff will contact parents of Year 12 students if they have any concerns.
YEAR 10 DINNER DANCE Saturday 22nd October – should be a very enjoyable event. The Year 10‘s have been learning some set dances under the watchful eye of Mr Innocent Madamombe. More details to follow next week.
YEAR 12 ROAST & TOAST The annual Year 12 Roast & Toast is on Friday 21st October commencing at 8:30am in the Marian Centre. Parents of Year 12 students are warmly invited to attend.
YEAR 12 MUCK UP NIGHT This fun night is on Thursday 20th Oct – FOR YEAR 12 STUDENTS ONLY – supervised by staff. Students will have the opportunity to reflect, and be together in a fun atmosphere. Community News The Alice Springs Cycling Club would like to invite you to Social Come 'n' Try Rides at the Velodrome (Dalgety Road) Come, have a go on a track bike--Hands at all times! Brakes? Who needs brakes? Bring your cycling helmet, sneakers/sand shoes, and enthusiasm to try a new activity. Women on Saturday morning, 15 October, 7:00 - 9:00 am, bright and early before all your other commitments (and to beat the heat). Men on Sunday morning, 16 October, 10:00 - noon, after a sleep-in, come, use your legs to see how fast you can go then use them to slow you down.
Alice Springs Swimming Club “Come & Try� SwimminG Friday 28th October 7.00pm for 7.30pm start Interested in trying a new sport over summer? Why not give swimming a go? On Friday night 28 th October, non-registered swimmers are invited to compete, so pass the word around at school and bring a friend along. Our new coach, Brad Thurlow will be there to meet families in the club and a BBQ tea will be available. Swimmers may choose up to 4 events and must register in the sign-up book on pool. Today we went to the hall. We did yoga with Kalika. We laid on a mat and we did breathing exercises, we had to get a partner and pull each other up and down. At the end we had a relaxation time to calm down our bodies. It was fun. By Kayla 6
