Introduction to layers When heading into the outdoors, layering your clothing is essential to ensure comfort and protection from the elements, no matter what your adventure. From ultraCORE® base-layers and down jackets to GORE-TEX® outer-layers, Kathmandu’s range has your layering solutions covered. The key to warmth and comfort is using different layers of clothing to regulate your temperature depending on how cold it is outside or how warm you’re feeling inside. In this guide you’ll find information on each of the three layers and how you can use this system effectively while outdoors whatever the weather. There are three essential layers:
Base-layer Worn next-to-skin, this layer moves moisture away from your skin and towards the mid and outer layers keeping you dry and comfortable. Don’t wear cotton as it absorbs sweat vapour in the fabric, which accelerates heat loss and feels clammy to wear.
Mid-layer Worn over the base-layer, this layer keeps warmth in and moves any moisture from the base-layer outwards. Vary the thickness and number of mid-layers according to how cold it is or how warm you get. Always ensure you have enough mid-layers for cold weather activities – consider taking a spare mid-layer just in case temperatures drop.
Outer-layer This is your shield against wind, rain or snow, and like your mid and base-layers should be breathable to allow body moisture out.
Base-layers When choosing a base-layer, consider the activity you’ll be involved in and how cold the climate is likely to be.
Ideal for outdoor and active pursuits in colder conditions.
Base-layer garments like thermaPLUS®, ultraCORE® and merino should provide a snug fit that will keep bodygenerated warmth close to your skin, boosting comfort in cold conditions. For warmer conditions, consider a relaxed fit.

Mid-layers Mid-layers provide warmth and transport moisture from the base-layer. Fabrics like merino wool and fleece are well suited for this as they move moisture away from the base-layer and their fibres create pockets for trapping warm air.

Outer-layers Outer-layers can be divided into two types – hard and soft. ‘Hard’ shells (i.e. GORE-TEX® fabric) are designed to protect you from extreme conditions including rain, wind and snow, holding in your body heat while allowing water vapour to escape. ‘Soft’ shells (i.e. Softshell fabric) incorporate many characteristics of a mid and outer-layer, providing increased breathability, ease of movement and comfort, while still giving protection from wind and rain.
