We are looking for volunteer coaches for youth soccer, basketball & volleyball.

The River Trails Park District utilizes volunteers in many areas and special events. Each season, we post an updated listing of opportunities for volunteers to assist with our programs’ success. All prospective volunteers must complete and submit a volunteer application, waiver, and release form. If you are selected to be a volunteer, you are required to complete a Criminal Background Check. Special park district perks for volunteers.

Program Overview

Lumity’s Student Based Enterprise (SBE) is a STEM-focused job training program that connects high school students with local businesses. Students gain hands-on experience, explore STEM careers, and build valuable skills by creating real-world solutions in areas like cybersecurity, digital media, data analysis, and technology.

Introducing students to STEM careers through real-world experience

Guided by program staff and volunteer experts, students develop action plans for small business clients—building a win-win partnership that prepares youth for employment while helping businesses grow.

Real STEM Experiences, Real Opportunities

How it Works

• High school students are grouped into teams of 3 or 4; they are paired with local businesses who act as their clients.

Program Timeline (September–March)

The SBE Program creates opportunities for youth and businesses alike.

September Student teams are formed; teams are matched with business clients.

Student teams meet with their clients to identify and understand problems and needs in website and social media integration, tech assessments, cybersecurity, or data analysis.

Student teams work with their small business clients during their SBE project, focusing on one of four areas:

Students receive ongoing instruction in computer science, customer service, professionalism, and entrepreneurism from Lumity staff, classroom teachers, and volunteer coaches.

September –November Student teams meet with coaches and clients to identify and define client needs (minimum of 2 meetings).

Website & Social Media Integration

• The students work together to devise solutions for solving problems and addressing client needs.

December –February Teams develop solutions and action plans, meet with coaches and clients to review progress (minimum of 2 meetings).

Teams showcase their projects at school events, and the winning student teams are invited to present at Lumity’s Annual Benefit.

Our SBE program helps students achieve their goals thanks to two very important groups. These are the small businesses that serve as clients and the STEM professionals who serve as volunteer coaches. We work closely with each group to set clear expectations and guidelines.

Identifying new and emerging technologies relevant to the company.

Our volunteer coaches want to help students learn more about STEM careers. They are subject matter experts willing to share their business and technical skills to move the needle. They commit to working with their student teams throughout the school year. Lumity works with coaches to develop a schedule that matches their availability and skill set.

• Being available to meet with student teams at least four times between September and February.

Evaluating final presentations using a rubric that Lumity provides.

Inventorying and creating a tracking system/ database for the company’s devices.

• Being able to meet with student teams at least once per month from September through March.

Systematically identifying and fixing problems with company devices and their components.

• Being available for surveys and follow-up interviews once the program is complete.

Installing, updating, and managing software on company devices.

• Being available for surveys and follow-up interviews once the program is complete.

Recommending improvements to the design of staff’s network infrastructure, based on an analysis of how staff interact with company devices.

Providing teens and young adults in underserved communities with transformational experiences to prepare them for lifelong STEM careers.

The Lumity STEM Career Prep Program is a four-year program that engages Chicago students in transformational STEM experiences. In the 2018-19 school year, Lumity worked weekly, across Chicago, in 20 classrooms at Amundsen, Chicago Vocational Career Academy and Von Steuben high schools to prepare students for future STEM careers.

Olots to construct Out of the first 100 city-owned lots provided, 70 in total are feasible for the development of new construction, single-family homes (e.g., some are actually not owned by the City, some are too small, and some have been claimed by adverse possession). Approximately 52 more homes will be built on these remaining city-owned lots in 2023 and early 2024. The City has committed a total of 250 vacant lots in North Lawndale for the first phase of this effort. LCDC and CNI plan to begin construction on the Homes at 1621 and 1623 S. Avers in North Lawndale.

n January 26, 1966, Martin Luther King, Jr. moved into a ramshackle apartment at the corner of 16th and Hamlin in the North Lawndale neighborhood. He worked with local leaders and institutions to create a new Chicago rooted in love and justice. 57 years later, much has changed. But injustice remains.

We still confront the rubble of racial and economic segregation—the vacant lots and vacant buildings, the rampant disinvestment on our south and west sides, and the horrifying violence that spreads across our city like a cancer. These are moral problems‚but they also threaten the very viability of our city as they contribute to the loss of people and business investment, city budgetary challenges, a growing gap between rich and poor, and the disappearance of workingclass neighborhoods.

Most of the solutions proposed for these problems do not emanate from people or institutions who live the everyday reality of vacancy, violence, and disinvestment. Most of the solutions proposed do not directly involve rebuilding west and south side neighborhoods.

Our solution is to rebuild the core neighborhoods on the south and west sides for everyday people.

Replace the vacant lots and buildings with new affordable homes where working-class families can raise their families and create a new future. Do it with urgency and at scale – create new homeowners and taxpayers, give people opportunities to build wealth through homeownership, and reclaim entire blocks at a time.

About Hidden Truths Project

Mission

To raise awareness about the pervasiveness of epilepsy and other hidden disabilities, and to improve the wellbeing of those affected—through art, storytelling, and inclusive community engagement.

Founded by Dr. Julie Thompson-Dobkin in 2012, Hidden Truths Project (HTP) was born from a simple but powerful idea: that art can illuminate what medicine alone cannot. Today, our exhibits, workshops, and film series serve as a platform for dialogue and empowerment. We’ve partnered with artists from six continents, raised over $750,000, and inspired thousands—both on-site and online.

From Application to Action: How the DCEO Grant is Taking Shape

e’re using this month’s column to provide an update on the State of Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) grant. As a reminder to our members, Illinois Senators Martwick and LaPointe notified OIPA of the $250,000 operational grant in October 2024, with the official grant timeline spanning until June 30, 2026.

Since October 2024, we have gathered community feedback and completed required forms and budgets to officially begin utilizing the grant. It wasn’t until April of this year that we initiated the reimbursement process, which involves submitting monthly reports that outline our grant expenditures, requested reimbursements, and progress toward our approved grant items.

The process has been a lot of work and a steep learning curve, but the effort is well worth the benefit to our neighborhood! See the snapshot of our budget and progress at right (page 3).
