message from the dean

program The School of Architecture is dedicated to improving the built environment through creative designs and plans grounded in an understanding of place. The school promotes good design and planning through its knowledge of history, culture, and ecology: designs and plans that are responsible and responsive. Our faculty and student body value idealism and rigor, a deep commitment to social justice, innovation and broad thinking, optimism, and a sense of humor. These qualities make the School of Architecture one of the country’s most celebrated, and our students among the best and brightest. We seek to preserve the finest of our built cultural heritage while envisioning new futures that are healthy, safe, energy-efficient, environmentally friendly, and beautiful. The School of Architecture advances the professions of architecture, community and regional planning, historic preservation, interior design, landscape architecture, sustainable design, and urban design, as well as the discipline of architectural history, through research and creative works. Faculty produce books, articles, and exhibitions, as well as designs for interior spaces, buildings, campuses, parks, and cities. These works contribute to the body of knowledge in our professions. School of Architecture students benefit from engaging with faculty who are at the forefront of architecture, design, and planning ideas. Indeed, many of our students have gone on to be leaders in practice and education themselves. The class of 2016 shares a love of and commitment to design, and the belief that it can shape our world in indelible ways. I congratulate our graduates and know that they will surely be the change agents of the 21st century.

The university-wide commencement ceremony takes place following all of the convocations and is the culmination of the commencement weekend. At this ceremony, students are recognized with others from their college or school as a group rather than individually. The ceremony takes place in front of the Tower and includes a distinguished speaker, conferring of degrees by the president, and the traditional lighting of the Tower in orange to honor graduates. The celebration concludes with a fireworks display.

Commencement is an important rite of passage for each graduate. As a university, we gather together to celebrate the immeasurable knowledge created across our campus by the Class of 2016 and the graduate students receiving their degrees today. To UT’s newest alumni and all those who provided support along their journeys, congratulations on your remarkable achievement. The university community and I wish you continued success on the path you choose next.
