NATIONAL SHOW & SALE FEATURES SHOWS & SALES INDEX OF ADVERTISERS 3 Vol. 67 - No. 3
Iwould like to welcome everybody into the new year and hopefully everyone had a great and safe holiday. For starters I want to make clear that no Board of Director will ever reach out asking for money donations or gift cards. Please all be aware of scammers as these emails/texts can look legitimate. If you ever have any concerns or questions about something you received that does not look right, please reach out to Charlie Worm or Myself. I would like to address another concern that we have heard, which is that of advertisement in the SOC. This was a conversation we had back in June when members were stating they still wanted paper copies of SOC. To avoid confusion, there are two options if you want to take out an ad in the SOC. The first option is to have someone build your ad for you; this is something that you will need to pay for. The second option is to create your own ad that needs no additional work, which is free. There are also options to take out a years worth of ads which will save you money in the long run and could be republished multiple times. If you have any additional questions when it comes to advertising in the SOC please reach out to Katherine Kuykendall or Charlie Worm directly.
With every new year comes new challenges.
The next challenge that we face will be this up-andcoming lambing season. Some of us have probably already started and some of us might not start for months. It doesn’t matter when you start, we all face challenges. I hope as members of the CSBA we can all work together to help each other out through these tough times during lambing. Sometimes we have a hard time talking about some of the issues we have during lambing, worrying that we aren’t doing something right. Personally, a few years back we had a problem with selenium in our grain. This was a new issue on our farm and took us a while to get to the bottom of it. This caused our ewes to not dilate correctly which caused many more issues as you can imagine. It was a tough lesson to learn and one we won’t forget. Selenium is now something that we are aware of and know a lot more about. My hope in sharing this story is that someone else out there can relate or has something they could share to help our community grow and produce healthy lambs.
Another challenge that we all face is the constant change in weather, globally. This past year in New England we had 17 out of 19 weekends where it rained. This made getting hay out of the fields more difficult and kept our pastors very wet. All the builtup water caused other health issues that we normally don’t see. Other parts of the country experienced droughts and high temperatures that they’ve never experienced in previous years. We all need to pay attention to our environment as it is very im-

portant to all of us and needed to be able to raise this great breed of sheep. One word that comes to mind, that I wish for all of us, is adaptability. Our environment is constantly changing, just like in 2020 the year Covid changed how we sell our animals and fleeces to the public. These challenges that we face will be different from year to year and we need to be ready for the challenges to come. We need each and everyone of you to be successful and that is the only way that we will succeed as the great Columbia breed.
I want to congratulate everyone for the success over the last year. Not all of us got to the show ring to promote our Columbia breed but for those who did I want to say thank you for being out front and promoting. I also want to say thank you to all the people that put fleece first this past year. The Columbia‘s have a very strong place in this market but we need to keep promoting our fleeces and improving on them. I also want to say thank you to our breeders who are in the commercial market. I know the Columbia is a fast-growing breed, putting on an average of a pound a day. This makes raising Columbia’s something that the commercial breeder keeps an eye on. We know that average daily gain it’s very important as it turns into profits in the end.
I want to wish everybody a happy 2024. Looking forward to seeing you all at our annual membership meeting this upcoming June in Utah.

SECRETARY’S MESSAGE
By now, most of you are lambing or will be lambing soon. Good luck! The American Sheep Industry celebrates “Lamb Lovers” month during February.
This issue of the SOC features the CSBA membership. Thank you to all our members listed in this annual directory. Thank you for your support and continued interest in Columbia sheep. The membership directory can be found on our website as well.
As the new year begins, I want to remind members that we have a “MEMBERS ONLY PAGE” so you can keep updated on the CSBA financial reports, Board Committee work, and Board meeting minutes. To get your 2024 password, fill out the online form which you can find on the CSBA website www.columbiasheep.org. Keep in mind the CSBA follows the calendar year, as determined by the By-Laws.
This SOC comes to you a little late. My day job has been particularly demanding during the fall and winter. By day, I work as a crop insurance agent and risk management specialist. In our area, farmers experienced drought conditions for two growing seasons. 2023 was especially tough and our clients reported a record number of claims. We work with a little over 400 policies and over 90% had claims which amounted to a payout of over 10 million dollars. All of those claims required overtime and extra attention to strict deadlines. My apologies for the late issue.
The next SOC will be the Sale Catalog. It will be right on time with a release on May 15th. The Results Issue is printed in late August and covers the NSS and other show results. The Breeder’s Directory comes out at the first of the year so we can summarize year-end data and the NAILE. If you have special events or information to share with the CSBA, be sure to let me know. Contact me by email or phone.

Happy 2024 from Wisconsin!
Although I’m sure many of you are at the height of spring lambing, I can’t help but look back on Louisville and the great breed shows we had. Congratulations to Elizabeth Thiesen on having Supreme in the Junior Show! Supreme at Louisville is such a highly sought after achievement, and I know the dedication it takes to get there. It was fun to witness.
I apologize for the delay on this issue. I’m intent on making the sale catalog issue timely, so be sure to get your information in! I’m excited for the trip out west. See you there!

If you attempt to locate a town called “Petersonville” in North or South Dakota, you will not find it on a map of either state. However, if you ask a local or, better yet, an old-timer in Lemmon, South Dakota, they will be quick to share a bit of history about “Petersonville.” Despite being named after its founder, George Ed Lemmon, the Lemmon area was homesteaded by a large populace of immigrants with the name Peterson. Thus, the tag name and where Peterson Sheep Company has its roots.
Doug and Lindi Peterson reside on the same ranch homesteaded by Doug’s great-grandparents. By their proximity to Lemmon the Peterson’s post office address places them in South Dakota. Logistically, however, Peterson Sheep Company is located across the border in
North Dakota. Doug and Lindi are happy to be identified with both locales.
Doug was serious about sheep at an early age. Doug’s dad had sheep, but Doug wanted a more serious future with sheep. Doug admits he “bugged” his dad so he could raise five bum lambs from a neighbor. Those bums transitioned into a 4-H project. Later, Doug made his first major investment when he acquired five gate-cut ewes from PeSchmaltz, a Columbia producer in the Hettinger area. However, his starter flock was missing a ram. So, Doug found help from LeRoy Johnson who, at the time, was the shepherd at the Hettinger Research Station. LeRoy loaned Doug a ram to get him started. But, most impor-

Doug & Lindi Peterson received the National Champion Ewe Award at the 2023 National Show & Sale, pictured with Ambassador Alyston Gull.
In addition to raising Columbias, the Petersons also raise and exhibit Hampshire sheep, including the 2019 Reserve National Champion Ram at NAILE.
tantly, LeRoy provided the inspiration, expertise, and guidance that propelled Doug into the sheep industry. Doug considers LeRoy to have been one of his closest friends and mentor.
When Lindi and Doug married, Lindi brought even greater energy and enthusiasm to the ranch and sheep business. The sheep were their livelihood and they shared, and continue to share, in all aspects of the operation. The Peterson homestead was the perfect location to raise their two sons Bryan and Scott. It was not unusual to see Lindi “toting” kids, and later grandkids, while she was attending to sheep chores. Even today, they maintain a large home so, as Lindi says, “Everyone can come home at the same time.”
The Peterson’s sheep numbers have varied over the years from 1,000 ewes (to lamb out) to the current flock size of five hundred ewes. They have commercial ewes and purebred Hampshire, Suffolk, and Columbia ewes. Both Doug and Lindi agree that the Columbia ewes are superior to the commercial or the other purebreds. As advertised, the Columbias are easier to manage, are docile and handle better in jugs, have better milking ability, and are caring mothers. Lindi is always quick to mention that she “loves her Columbias!”
The Petersons agree that they raise “their kind of sheep.” They have produced outstanding results in the Hampshire, Suffolk, and Columbia show rings. Peterson’s genetics can be found in countless pedigrees in all three breeds. Many producers have profited from the Peterson “kind” of sheep. Today, about one-third of the Peterson flock is purebred.
Among the challenges faced in today’s sheep industry, they feel the demise of the range ram business has been the most impactful to their Columbia business in range territory. Currently, they sell about ten range rams annually as compared to forty or more in years past. Both agree that when shearers started to be particular about the size to shear, the larger breed range ram business dried up. They also understand the challenges of the wool market. Fortunately, they are located within 150 miles of the Center of the Nation warehouse in Bel Fouche thereby making their marketing a bit easier.
The Petersons attended their first National Columbia Show and Sale in 1988 in Wausau, Wisconsin. They have been regular consignors since, consistently winning Champions and Reserve Champions. Over the years, both have been active in the leadership of the Colum-

bia Association. Doug was director for the Minnesota-Dakota Columbia Sheep Breeders which once represented a sizable membership from those three states. Doug recalls serving with icons of the breed; Marlin Burchill, Palmer Schonning, and Harold Osborne. Lindi served as a National CSBA Director. They are generous supporters of the CSBA and Junior Association. Three years ago, they donated the Junior raffle ewe lamb. That lamb holds the record for most raffle tickets sold. Two years ago, they donated a fitting stand to raise Jr. Association funds. Lindi has added a Black Hills Gold necklace to be CSBA banquet auction for many years. They are Silver Booster Club Members. In 1996, Doug and Lindi were recognized as CSBA Member of the Year.
Doug and Lindi are proud parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents. As Lindi shared, “All of them have gotten to be successful at the career they wanted.” Today, their son Scott is a teacher in Lemmon. His children include Brody, a dentist in Hettinger, and Braydon, a speech pathologist in Dickinson. Son Bryan was lost to a rare autoimmune condition ten years ago. Bryan worked with
Doug in the lumber business and held a degree in Theological Studies. Bryan’s daughter, Kourtney, is the national director for a major corporation and Bryan’s son, Brandon, is a highly skilled welder.
Four years ago, Cassidy Lobdell joined Peterson Sheep Company as their shepherd. Cassidy has become an integral part of the operation. Lindi says, “We could not do what we do without Cassidy.” Cassidy’s daughter Cari is a shepherd in training and is a joyful part of their family.
Doug keeps extremely busy off the ranch with their lumber yard/hardware store in Lemmon. He also oversees several hotel and housing investments in local communities. Lindi has an extensive cookie jar collection and doll collection. One of her rarest finds is a Charlie McCarthy doll made famous by ventriloquist, Edgar Bergen.
Both Doug and Lindi will tell you that their favorite sheep event—hands-down—is the National Columbia Sheep Show and Sale. They look forward to it every year. They describe the NSS as a reunion of lifelong friends that they would not miss. They will be in Spanish Fork to catch up with everyone again in 2024! They can hardly wait!

MAKE YOUR ENTRIES: OHIO SHOWCASE SALE
Breeders, As spring lambs start to hit the ground, we would like to urge you to consider making an entry to the Ohio Showcase sale this year. With the increase in popularity, the sale venue is quickly filling up. To combat this, at their most recent meeting, the sales committee decided that if there are not at least 10 Columbias exhibited at the sale, they will no longer be apart of the sale. If this happens, the junior members will be the ones to suffer. This sale is early enough that juniors will have ownership of the animal before the cut-off for most states. They will also lose a chance to buy a futurity nominated ewe, as this is one of the 3 sales you can purchase futurity nominated ewes. So, as the lambing season continues, please think about making an entry at the Ohio Showcase Sale this year. For more information or any questions you may have, contact anyone at Select Livestock Services, LLC, or go to their website for updates www.selectls.net.
STANDOUT HETTINGER COLUMBIA RAM TEST
In the words of Dave Pearson, Shepherd at the North Dakota Hettinger Research Extension Station, “This is the nicest group of Columbia rams that I can remember! They are doing great.”
Fourteen Columbia rams are on the current Hettinger test. Producers entered are Luke Steinmetz, SD (2), Loni Blackman, MT (2), Timber Coulee Columbias, MT (3), NDSU-Fargo (1), Faith Gasvoda, MT (1), Geneva Hills, ND (1), Charles Worm, MN (2), and Hettinger (2).
The test began on September 21st, 2023, and concludes with the annual Ram Test Field Day on March 9th. Everyone is invited to stop by and see the new HREC sheep facility. Dr. Chris Schaurer and Dave Pearson will share this year’s results and analysis of the data collected. Full results will be in the next issue of the SOC.

JUNIOR BOARD: MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Happy New Year, Columbia breeders! The Junior Board put in the work in 2023, and nothing is going to change in 2024. After a successful North American International Livestock Expo (NAILE), my fellow board members and I have been hard at work planning for the upcoming National Junior Show this summer. We would like to thank everyone who has made monetary donations and helped organize activities so far. We could not do what we do without your support! With that being said, we are in need of some help. We are looking for a few breeders to bring an extra sheep or two for the fitting contest this year. If you would be willing, please contact me or any of the junior board members, we appreciate your support! We are also looking for award sponsors and monetary donations to help offset costs at the National this year. If you are willing to help with either of these requests, we greatly appreciate your support. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me via email or phone; all of my contact information can be found on the website underneath the Jr. Association tab. Please send any monetary donations directly to Charlie. Thank you all for supporting the Junior Association; we would not be here without you!

HAILEY LUIS PARTICIPATES IN NATIONAL MAKE IT WITH WOOL
Junior CSBA Association member, Hailey Luis, had the opportunity to participate in the National Make It Yourself With Wool event recently held in Denver. The MIWW is held in conjunction with the American Sheep Industry Convention.
Hailey won the California MIWW Junior Division which allowed her to advance to the national level. Hailey found it to be a wonderful learning experience and an even better opportunity to share a common interest with new friends from throughout the country. She is planning for next year already!
A wool felting workshop was held for participants.
