Iam writing this message as your newly elected Columbia Sheep Breeders Association President. I hope this message finds you all healthy and well. I also hope you all have had a wonderful summer and an even better show season. I have really enjoyed watching everyone’s accomplishments through Facebook and I look forward to the fall results coming soon!
I am looking forward to being the CSBA Board Chair. I am always available via email or phone so please reach out if you have any questions. I believe that together we will be able to continue to improve build the Columbia breed, continue hosting our own National Show and Sale, and continue building the Junior Association. The Spanish Fork NSS was a success and would not be possible without all of you. I hope to see all of you in Findlay Ohio in June 2025.
A little about me - I have been around Columbia sheep my entire life. My parents, Craig and Doelene, purchased their first Columbia sheep in 1980. I have loved raising them ever since. I do believe that they are the best breed and I enjoy promoting and encouraging others to see that as well.
I am married and have five children, two grandchildren with one that will be here any day. I currently teach special education at a local high school and lead the department. I just finished my MD in Education with a specialization in Administration and Supervision. My goal is to be a school administrator one day. For now, I love teaching and plan to stay in the classroom for a while longer.

The “Members Only” will have all the current CSBA Board meeting minutes and financial statements. The minutes and financials will be posted within one week of a CSBA Board meeting. Committee reports will be posted within one week of the meeting, as well. Membership runs from January 1 to December 31 of the current year.
What a trip out west the National Show & Sale was! I loved seeing the mountains and learning about the differences in farm operations in such a unique climate compared to what I grew up accustomed to. The Jarvis farm tour was a particular highlight for me, and it was inspiring to see the awards presented at the banquet—two Silver Bells and a Golden Bell! Read more about these highlights and more in this issue.
Enjoy reading through the results of the National Show and Sale, National Junior Show, and All-American Junior Show! I know many of you are either attending or have attended state fairs recently, and I wish you the best of success.
As always, a big thank you to all the advertisers who support Speaking of Columbias. Your support allows the Board to continue producing the magazine. Don’t forget that the next issue will be the annual directory—a great opportunity to place an ad, even if it’s just a business card size, to promote your flock.
Katherine Kuykendall
KATHERINE KUYKENDALL, WI EDITOR, SPEAKING OF COLUMBIAS
The 2024 National Show and Sale was one to remember! Thank you, Jarvis Family, for hosting! The Jarvis Ranch tour was excellent. It was a time to catch up with Western breeders whom we do not always get to see each year. It was, also, bittersweet to see Woolstenhulme Columbias consign their last Columbias to an NSS. However, it was such a fitting end for Don and Cathy to consign the Champion Ewe. Congratulations and thank you for your many contributions as a part of the Columbia Sheep Breeders Association. (Cathy and Don pictured with Doelene Pitt to the right.)
I must also congratulate and thank the three retiring Board members—Steve Hampson, Sara Hildebrandt, and David Brown. I cannot understate the contributions made by these Board Alumni. All have worked, extensively, for the betterment of the Columbia breed and CSBA membership. Steve served on the board for years and was Board Chair for the past four years. Steve, your “little red notebook” was invaluable for gaining member insight. You are an excellent listener and negotiator! Thank you. Sara, you served as the Board chair for three years when finances and transparency required an overhaul. Your determination allowed the Board to do that! Your creativity is invaluable to our Facebook and Instagram pages and CSBA website. Thank you! David is at the heart of many CSBA activities. Thank you for securing award/event sponsors for the NSS, managing the NSS wool show, organizing the starter flock project, and being instrumental in organizing the online National Sale in 2020.
As the CSBA looks to the future, the most notable discussion may focus on the National Show and Sale location. Over the years, the CSBA has established a rotation between the east, central, and west so our members can regularly participate in the NSS. Hosting our own NSS has, also, allowed the CSBA to profit from our volunteer efforts and many contributions to the event. However, costs have increased for facilities, and items such as manure removal and disposal have become an issue. Be sure to share your thoughts regarding the location and budgeting of the NSS with your Board representative. Or if you would like to host an NSS, contact any Board member.
The futurity program and Junior program remain strong. What a turnout, with more than 30 kids participating at the National! The Board’s Youth Committee will continue to focus on assisting the Junior Officers in 2024-25. Junior President Cortney Copeland, also, deserves “kudos” for her outstanding leadership. Cortney is unique in her ability to organize and get the job done.
Finally, let me say another “thank you” to the lengthy list of volunteers and contributors to the National Show and Sale. Because of you, the CSBA can host the National and sponsor the extensive list of programs for our Junior Association. A complete list of sponsors and volunteers is printed throughout this SOC.

Grace Hayes (Thiesen 2320)
The Columbia Futurity Program is one of the most successful among purebred sheep associations. The program is sponsored by the Columbia Sheep Breeders Association. The purpose is to encourage Junior members to build a future Columbia flock with outstanding genetics purchased as designated sales. There are two competitive aspects, the Points program and the Comeback program.
The Points program awards points earned by the ewe at shows until the next NSS. The CSBA sponsors the awards for all participants.

Will Griggs, Utah Wool Growers Manager evaluated the fleeces for the 2024 National Wool Show. Sifting through the ewe fleeces, he commented that he saw improved quality of fleeces than when he judged in the past.
In the ewe division, he selected 15.25 lb fleece from Triple C Columbias, Roberta and Ashlie Chase from Strasburg, Colorado as the top fleece. This is from their ewe, Chase G2214. He followed that up with a 17.25 lb fleece of Geneva Hills 7775RR exhibited by Geneva Hills Farm from Valley City, North Dakota.
Nine ram fleeces were entered. The top prize went to Raspberry Meadows Farm, Don and Lois Wissmann from Leasburg, Missouri with their ram, Geneva Hills 8877RR. This fleece weighed 19.75 lbs. Reserve Champion Fleece was shown by Geneva Hills Farm on Eagleson W64.
The Overall Champion fleece went to Raspberry Meadows with their ram fleece and Reserve Overall was the ewe fleece of Triple C Columbias.
In the Natural Colored show, Ashlie and Roberta Chase exhibited Grand and Reserve Champion Fleeces.

Sara Hildebrandt from Plainfield, Wisconsin was presented with the Member of the Year Award at the 2024 National Show & Sale. Sara is pictured on the right with her daughter Courtney and her parents, Dave and Mary Troxel.
Sara (Troxel) Hildebrandt was born into the Columbia sheep business. As a part of Troxel Columbias, Sara grew up in the CSBA. She has traveled the country and met countless sheep breeders who share her passion for sheep, especially Columbias.
Sara has exhibited high-quality Columbia sheep her entire life: first as a 4-H and FFA member, later as an open class exhibitor at countless fairs, and then as a consignor to the NSS. Her show ring winnings are many, but two of the most memorable are the 2015 Reserve Champion Ram and the 2021 NSS Champion Ewe.
While Sara’s show ring ribbons are many, her contributions beyond the show ring are far greater. Sara was the first president of the upstart Jr. Columbia Association in 1997. She was the CSBA Ambassador the same year. Sara served as a CSBA Board member from 2014 to 2024. As the chair, she focused on financial stability and board transparency. She was the board chair in 2015, 2016, and 2017. Her creativity led to the annual online CSBA Membership Drive. She has handled the NSS Silent Auction for many years. She has assisted the Juniors with the Ewe Lamb Raffle. She is also one of the editors of the CSBA Facebook and Instagram pages.
Congratulations and thank you, Sara, for your commitment to shaping the CSBA.

The Silver Bell acknowledges an individual as a valued Columbia Sheep Breeders Association member. Sponsored in 2024 by Woolstenhulme Columbias and Jarvis Sheep Company, the Silver Bell Award represents their “body of work” as a producer of Columbia sheep and for their positive contributions to the CSBA. In 2024, three CSBA members were recognized. Their names are synonymous with the Columbia breed and CSBA; Lynn Frey and Doug and Lindi Peterson.
The contributions of Doug, Lindi, and Lynn are extensive and selfless and have provided a positive impact on the CSBA and Junior Association.
• Consignor to the National Show and Sale -- for decades!
• Are known for genetics that have built the Columbia breed
• Have hosted a National Show and Sale
• Have served as a CSBA Board member and officer
• CSBA Booster Club member
• NSS award sponsor
• Jr. Association award and financial sponsor
• Donated a raffle lamb for the Junior fundraiser.
• Regularly support the Speaking of Columbias magazine with advertising.
• Always a willing and able volunteer!!!
Doug and Lindi were featured in the 2023 Breeders Directory of the SOC as the Breeder Spotlight. Their article can be found on the CSBA website at columbiasheep.org. Lynn will be featured in a Breeder Spotlight in our next magazine. Both articles describe their impressive history in the Columbia breed.
Congratulations to the Petersons and Lynn! The CSBA sincerely appreciates your commitment to the Association.
The CSBA Starter Flocks have been awarded to new members from the West Coast to the Midwest to the Deep South--this year’s recipient hails from the speedways of Talladega, Alabama. Will Jordan learned of our starter flock program through the weekly American Sheep Industry newsletter. He was interested in Columbias. Will spoke with last year’s winner, Sam Gullion, about the program and raising Columbias. Will was impressed with Columbias for their maternal nature, gentleness, fertility, and quality. Will is no stranger to livestock. He and his family have a small cattle operation. He has experience with exhibiting and judging crossbred market lambs. The operation now includes sheep.
Will received a ewe lamb from our first-year Starter Flock Recipient, Zane Van Horsen, a 3-year-old ewe from Geneva Hills Farm, and another Starter Flock winner, Brendan Murphy donated an ewe. Will utilized his $500 voucher to purchase a January Ram Lamb from Peterson Sheep Company, Doug and Lindi Peterson of Lemmon, South Dakota. Special thank you to Mark Eagleson for transporting the new flock to Sedalia so Will could get his new flock home to Alabama. We are indebted to our generous CSBA members for their commitment to making this program successful.
The program has three applicants for the 2025 Starter Flock Program already! We always appreciate CSBA support and donations of Columbia ewes to the program. If you are willing to donate a ewe lamb or ewe, please reach out to Charlie at charliew@extendag.com or David Brown at genevahillsfarm@gmail.com.
Wednesday evening took the stage for the annual NSS Cornhole Tourney. 21 teams participated. Mike Moenter and Stephen Thiesen made up the winning team. The team entry fees totaled $210.00 - that money was put into a random draw for the Juniors who participated in NSS events. Three lucky kids each received a $70 check that was to be used at the NSS auction - Allie Hart, Jamen Christensen, and James Davis.
Lee and Joan are pictured with their children at the 2024 National Columbia Show & Sale banquet. Acknowledgment to Holly Courtney’s presentation at the 2024 NSS Awards Banquet for providing this information.
The “Golden Bell” award originated in 2006 to recognize the life commitment of Dick and Phyllis Gerber. Dick and Phyllis received the first Golden Bell upon their retirement as the 40-year Executive Secretary of the CSBA. The Spanish Fork National Show and Sale allowed the CSBA to present a second Golden Bell to Lee and Joan Jarvis from Spanish Fork.
Lee purchased three Suffolk ewes for $25 each as an FFA project. Lee’s dream was to own a sheep ranch one day. When Lee was a high school senior, he had consigned the top-selling pen of rams at the Utah Ram Sale. Eventually, Lee’s FFA project grew to 600 Columbia and Suffolk ewes. Today, Jarvis Sheep Company is a nationally recognized and respected flock.
Lee and Joan met at a rodeo where she was the Rodeo Queen. From then on, the dream belonged to both. Lee worked at a local pipe plant for several years. Joan worked at a drug store and later at an animal clinic. Their off-farm employment made it possible to finance the dream and raise six kids. Over time, Lee and Joan acquired 300 acres of irrigated farmland in the Spanish Fork area and a 1500-acre ranch in Soda Springs, Idaho.
The ranch was always, and still is, a family affair. The Jarvis kids helped with every aspect of the operation from hauling hay to trimming bucks for the sales across the western United States. Lee and Joan supported their kids in all their activities and supplied them with animals, both lambs and steers, for every stock show in the state. Their daughter, Sherri, served as the Columbia Queen. Son Matt chose to become a part of the ranch. Today, all the Jarvis children and most of their grandchildren are involved with agriculture.
Jarvis Sheep Company has earned the trust of sheep ranchers throughout the western states. They sell a sizable percentage of their rams over the phone, sight unseen, until delivered. They are selling rams to the fifth generation of one of their longtime customers. Jarvis Sheep Company has earned countless Columbia and Suffolk awards over the years. Lee and Joan have always taken pride in their work and work to do things properly. Thus, they have established a long resume of champions at the Columbia NSS. In 2024 they consigned the National Champion Ram and National Champion Pair of Ewes.
Lee and Matt have always worked as partners. In 1998, Lee turned most of the daily responsibilities and finances to Matt and Sandra. However, Lee and Joan have remained very much involved in the Jarvis Sheep Company—evident during the NSS tour.
Lee has served on countless committees, or as he says, “Too many to remember.” He was the President of the Columbia Association in 1978 and 1979 and was President of the Utah Wool Growers and Utah Purebred Breeders. He was active in the American Sheep Industry and a regular attendee at the ASI annual convention. The CSBA named Lee and Joan as the CSBA “Shepherds of the Year” in 1985 and awarded the “Silver Bell” in 1996. In 2013, the Suffolk Hall of Fame included Lee and Joan in their inaugural class.
The CSBA is more than appreciative of the contributions of Lee and Joan to the CSBA over their decades of CSBA membership. Congratulations Lee and Joan for all you have done to advance Columbia sheep and support the CSBA!
SweetHART is in the very capable hands of her new owner, Emma Jae Rose! Her mom, Hailey Rose is a recent CSBA Starter Flock recipient from California.
Hailey says, “To say Emma Jae is excited about the beautiful ewe she won in the (junior) raffle, from Columbia Sheep Breeders, is an understatement!!! She has been wanting to have ‘her own flock’ and she is thrilled to have SweetHART join Sprinkles, Cupcake, Muffin, and Sweetie Pie!”
SweetHART made it home with the help of Tammy Zediker Luiz and Samuel Cooper. SweetHART was donated by Hart Sheep Company, LLC, Great Falls, Montana. The raffle lamb is the Junior Association’s key fundraiser. Thank you Brian and Hailee Hart and family. SweetHART’s name came to be with a CSBA Facebook contest. Facebook fans voted for their favorite name suggested by Facebook and Instagram Columbia fans.
Good luck and have lots of fun with your new friend, Emma Jae!
Hosted by Matt and Sandra Jarvis the Spanish Fork National Show and Sale was uniquely special. Matt and Sandra along with their family—Jake and Jackie, Chuck and Carli, and Alyse and Jake—treated our Columbia family to a wonderful week in this scenic part of the country.
A highlight of NSS week was a tour of Jarvis Ranch led by Matt, Sandra, and Lee on Wednesday afternoon. A sizable crowd caravaned to three sites where the group saw the iconic Jarvis Columbia and Suffolk flocks and learned more about the six generations of the Jarvis family of ranchers.
The heart of the ranch is only a short distance from Spanish Fork where Lee and Joan’s home and Cathy’s homes are located. The view is stunning, yet the location is an enigma as the ranch (and surrounding ranches) are encapsulated as a part of the growing suburbs.
The home farm was the first tour stop. It has the core facilities for lambing, pasturing ewes with young lambs, and growing out the Columbia and Suffolk range rams. The pasture and farmland are extremely flat. Spanish Fork is located south of Salt Lake City and at the base of the Wasatch Mountains in the southeast. The area is semi-arid and receives limited rain. Irrigation water is
sourced from a local reservoir and delivered with a gutter-gate system evident throughout the region. There is, typically, a three-day window where water is monitored and delivered to the Jarvis fields. Keen oversight is required to flood the fields. Matt was quick to explain that irrigation is not his favorite chore.
Lambing occurs within a few short weeks in late spring. Management is intense and sleep comes at a premium during lambing season. About 500 Columbia and Suffolk ewes pass through the lambing jugs. Ewes and lambs are grouped in lean-to sheds after lambing and then moved to a pasture setting. In spring the ewe-lamb groups are pastured at the home farm and south of Spanish Fork (tour stop 3.) Later in spring, the pairs are transported to the Soda Springs, Idaho ranch for the summer. Daughter, Alyse, and her husband, Jake, just finished fencing and prepping the Idaho ranch the week before the NSS. Transporting the ewes and lambs to Idaho was a top priority after the national.
A major aspect of the Jarvis Sheep Company is raising high-quality Columbia and Suffolk range rams. Jarvis’ reputation for providing reliable range rams is unrivaled. Lee and Matt have worked with some clients for 50 years. During the tour, the range rams were on full feed. Matt had just delivered a group of Suffolk rams to Arizona shortly before the NSS. The tour group marveled at the excellence and uniformity of both breeds.
Tour stop 2 was at Matt and Sandra’s home. This is a primary location for storing hay and housing sheep off-pasture sheep. Here the group learned more about the Columbia sheep ranches, Mark Bradford for example, that were once a part of the Spanish Fork landscape. It was, also, the first time many learned of the Jarvis “brand” which is a trademark at the Utah Ram Sale, to ram buyers, and the local area.
Stop 3 was a short drive south of Spanish Fork. This location is called the Lavender Field and for good reason. This is home to an international producer of essential oils where lavender is being raised. The sheep graze between the lavender rows as the lavender plants grow and before the blooms are harvested. An electric fence surrounded the field occupied by Columbia and Suffolk ewes with lambs. Uniquely, Matt pointed out that the two breeds will separate by breed in a large field setting like this. The fragrance of lavender was evident.
Today, Matt and Sandra’s family continue to be involved in all aspects of the Jarvis Sheep Company. Jake and Jackie, Chuck and Carli, and Alyse and Jake and their families live in the Payson or Spanish Fork area. The grandkids are involved with the sheep and rodeo— keeping with the Jarvis tradition.
Anne and Tom Key established the Montana Aerie Sheep Ranch in 1994. Anne was passionate about her work with sheep and the wool industry. She enjoyed sharing her knowledge with the public, especially with youth. Montana Aerie consigned many Columbia National Champion Rams and Ewes. Anne and Tom were jointly named CSBA Sheep Persons of the Year in 2009.
Anne is remembered for her kind, compassionate, friendly personality. She was always willing to lend a hand and was especially involved with young sheep producers. Anne passed away in the spring of 2012 after a long battle with cancer. This memorial was created to honor her ever present, supportive nature in the sheep industry. Each year, a junior member is chosen to represent the same kind of ideals emulated by Anne Key. Courtney Bauck was selected as the 2024 Anne Key Leadership Award winner.
Courtney loves to show sheep. Her tenacity was obvious while showing a rambunctious yearling ram for a younger member in the Junior NSS Show. Courtney had a terrific Junior Show by exhibiting the first place senior ewe lamb named the Reserve Senior Champion in the Junior Show. She was also named the Champion Senior Showperson, and part of the winning pair in the Team Showmanship competition.
Courtney is a busy teen. She is on the varsity volleyball team and varsity basketball team. She is in the National Honor Society. She is an FFA Officer, active in the Band, and part of the school’s Color Guard and Math League. She enjoys being a teacher’s assistant and kindergarten roundup teacher’s assistant. Her favorite class is Fitness. Courtney works at ‘K to Z Detailing’ and babysits on her “days off”. When she isn’t working, she enjoys sitting on the back patio with her family and playing with her dogs. Courtney will be a senior at Tri-County High School.
Congratulations Courtney!

What grade are you in? I will be a sophomore this fall.
What are your favorite subjects?
Math and English. I am taking classes at my local community college because I aim to graduate from high school with a AA degree.
What are some of your hobbies? I enjoy reading, writing, and listening to music.
What extracurriculars do you participate in?
I participate in volleyball, FFA, 4-H, and track. I am part of my county 4-H Vet Science team. In FFA, I am on the livestock judging and public speaking teams. Last fall, I entered the California Make It With Wool Contest and got to go to the national contest during the American Sheep Industry convention in Denver.
How did you get started showing Columbia sheep?
I got my own Columbia ewes when I was only three years old. I started showing with my mom, then 4-H and FFA. I pick my show sheep from my small flock which I try to improve each year. I have five brood ewes, two yearling ewes, five ewe lambs, and two ram lambs. I bought ewes at the 2019 and 2022 NSS to help improve my flock.
What is your favorite part of raising Columbia sheep?
I love their personalities and mothering ability. I love talking about my wool breed of sheep at shows. Normally, I am the only wool breed exhibitor at a show.
What has been your most memorable sheep moment?
At my first National Columbia Show in 2014, I went with my whole family, and I loved being introduced to all the Junior activities.
What is the best part of belonging to the Junior Columbia Association? Getting to meet other like-minded kids who love sheep as much as I do.
Name the favorite sheep you have raised and why:
Opal by far! I got Opal as a bottle baby when I was three and one-half years old. She went everywhere with me including my first NSS in 2014.
What is something surprising about you that people may not know?
I show market lambs, meat goats, dairy goats, and dairy cattle. Once I took 17 animals to the fair and helped with my mom’s 12 show sheep. I wrestled on my school’s wrestling team.
The Junior Association presents a $500 scholarship annually at the NSS Awards banquet. Junior members who plan to enroll in a two-year or four-year college or vocational/technical school and are a high school senior or graduate are eligible.
The 2024 recipient is Zane Newland from Harrod, OH. Zane is 18 years old and is a recent graduate of Allen East High School. His parents are Jen Shaeffer and his stepfather, Steve Etzler.
Zane started his Columbia flock in 2021 and has built it from the ground up. He says, “My family has been supportive of my love for sheep and allowed me to grow my flock. We have even built a new barn this year to help me grow my flock.” Zane is a hands-on shepherd. He is responsible for the daily chores, handles vaccinations, assists during lambing, works with his family regarding genetic additions to his flock, and maintains records.
Zane says the Junior Columbia Association has introduced him to people and activities that he never knew of. Most importantly, he knows he will not always place first, but “getting out there and just trying new things is half the battle!”
Zane is a busy teen. He is a member of the FFA and 4-H, serving as an officer in each. He was a member of the varsity soccer team, which earned him All-Conference Honorable Mention for two years, and he was the team captain. He also participated in wrestling, basketball, and baseball. Among his volunteer activities, Zane was an office helper at his elementary and high schools. He volunteered time to the West Ohio Food Bank distribution project.
Zane is appreciative of his scholarship, which he will use at Kentucky Christian University, where he plans to major in Agriculture Education or History.
