First off, I want to thank everyone that made this year’s National Show and Sale another successful event. There were many amazing things this year from the Junior events like their very competitive come-back show, the Junior show, this year’s popup which showed an Artificial insemination, a fantastic turn out for corn hole, and for the first time ever we had our annual membership meeting online for the breeders that could not make it in person. We teamed up with Livestock Market for our online part of the sale. We had a very strong and powerful Show and the Sale itself proved that the Columbia breed is still so strong.

During our annual meeting I talked about how breeders over the years have said that the Columbia Breed is divided. I honestly don’t believe this to be true. Yes, I admit I might be naive on this point. But since I have been raising Columbia’s, I have been told why there is or could be a divide. So, I have listened to anyone who has spoken about this. Personally, living on the east coast, I have been told many reasons for the divide. From the western breeders, the breeders that raise them as commercial for wool or meat, or the Junior breeders, or the breeders that show them, or is it the large or the small breeders.

The USDA wanted a breed that was fast growing that could live on the range and give a good fleece. Lately I have described our breed, the Columbia breed, as a Swiss Army knife. Just think of the boxes we check as the gentle white giant. We can give you height, length, great mothers, strong fleece, longevity, range rams, the list goes on. Every one of us raises the great breed for one reason or another. I personally like to show my Columbias that are part of my breeding to see if others agree with my program. I have a meat market so I also raise them to fit into my commercial market. I’m recently trying to get into selling my wool which tends to be a difficult market where I live. These are just some of the battles I’m struggling with where I live. I get the opportunity to listen to the battles each one of us struggles with depending on geography. One thing I can tell you is that we all are struggling with the same issues but in a different way. My hope for the future is that we try to understand what each breeder faces in their area and why each aspect of this breed is so important to them. At the end of the day we need every one of these aspects to keep this breed going. I encourage you to please take the time to talk to other breeders and I bet if you listen, we are all more alike than you think.

I look forward to serving as your president for 2023/2024 year and working with the newly appointed Board of Directors.

Sincerely,

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
Steve Hampson
4 SPEAKING OF
COLUMBIAS

“Those ewe lambs went nuts!” That’s the reaction repeated since the National Sale in June. Even at the recent Minnesota State Fair, I was still hearing about the Columbia sale—especially from other breeders. Yes, the ewe lambs sold like hotcakes. Bidding was brisk and competitive because our Juniors were bidding. Much credit can go to the success of the Futurity program!

Yes, it was a record setting sale! Thank you to all the consignors for bringing sheep that were in demand. No matter how the judge looked at the sheep, buyers saw what they wanted. There were excellent prices for sheep regardless of placing. That’s what makes a truly great sale.

Livestock Market did a wonderful job of hosting the online sale. Online bidding kicked up the prices too. LM will return in 2024. Consignors will be able to submit photos and videos to LM prior to the NSS.

Katherine did a wonderful job as our photographer. Danny was terrific, as usual. Alyssa and Doelene do a superb job managing the show and sale. We could not do what we do without them! You can’t ask for more than Wayne Busch at the end of our microphone. No one does it better than Wayne! Steve was the go-to guy for everything. What a difference he and Kim make! Thanks for the Wissman’s for feeding all of us. Finally, I often overlook the work of my sister, Louise. She has her finger on the pulse of the NSS from beginning to end. She is the key organizing factor behind it all.

Besides a record-setting sale, the National Show and Sale was another memorable reunion for past and present Columbia breeders. A short time after the NSS, I got this photo from this group of comeback kids! What fun to see these ladies! This is what our annual Columbia reunion is all about!

Finally, there was notably enthusiasm among the members and juniors while in Spencer. I can’t say enough about the strong leadership being demonstrated by the newly elected Junior Board. That group is on “automatic pilot.” I predict great things to come! I was, also, impressed with the annual CSBA membership meeting. The online member participation worked well for the eight members who were online. It was impressive to hear from the Board candidates who clearly explained what they could contribute to the Board. The discussion during the meeting was extremely valuable. The member’s only website came about with that discussion. The desire to keep a print-and-mail Speaking of Columbias was made clear. To me, that meeting was pivotal for the future. Thank you to all who attended. You made a difference.

Of course, now we look forward. I like what is going on in the Production and Commercial Committee and the Youth Support Committee. Be sure to get your Member’s Only Webpage PASSWORD so you can follow committee work. The Board wants to hear from you. If there is a problem, let us know your solution. If you have a new idea, be sure to share it. Have a good fall lambing season and harvest.

MESSAGE

Left to right: Ruth Braet, Carol Falk, Marna Geerts, Lindi Peterson, Sara Uphoff, Doelene Pitt, Mary Troxel.

What a National Sale! As I’m aggregating results from the sale, I can’t help but look back and be very impressed at what Columbia breeders brought together in Spencer. I’m already looking forward to heading west next year. Of course, you can always view and purchase photos at www.kakimages.com. Thank you to all of you that show me so much kindness and make sure I’m taken care of - including a ragtag group that “relocated” mulch for the backdrop!

Once again I thank those of you that advertised in this issue - you keep Speaking of Columbias active! If you’re interested in advertising but aren’t sure where to start for the marketing of your flock, I’d be thrilled to work with you on a design and create a look that you think represents your brand. Please don’t hesitate to reach out with ideas! I tried out a new idea with the Pitt family that you can see to the right - a vertical 1/2 page ad, which I’ve never run before. I love doing something a bit out of the box sometimes!

Following the National, I was happy to see a good Columbia representation at the All-American Junior Show. I was on the photography crew there and got a front row seat to all of the shows - check out the Columbia results on page 48.

Congrats to everyone with show success this summer. I know there were Columbias throughout the country receiving Supreme honors which is always great to see for the breed!

The next time you’ll see us in print is at the start of the year with the Breeders Directory. I’ll be at the Big E and Louisville before then, if anyone would like to visit about the SOC! Thank you all for your support, as always!

STANDING COMMITTEES

READY TO GO!

The Board members do a great deal of their work in committee. Committees are the most effective way for Board members to do their homework, evaluate decisions, and make recommendations to the full Board. Committee reports are also available on the “Members Only” page. Committees meet as often as needed but often meet to finalize recommendations a week or two prior to a Board meeting.

CORTNEY COPELAND RECEIVES THE ANNE KEY AWARD

The Anne Key Award is presented to a Junior CSBA member to commemorate Anne’s nurturing personality. Cortney Copeland was the unanimous choice to receive the 2023 Anne Key Award. Cortney is the daughter of Mike and Becky Copeland from Lewiston, Ohio.

Anne is remembered for her kind, compassionate, friendly personality. Anne was always willing to lend a hand and was, especially, involved with younger sheep producers. Anne passed away in the spring of 2012 after a long battle with cancer.

Cortney, like Anne, is a go-getter. She does not wait for things to happen. She makes things happen. Cortney is the newly elected President of the Junior Association. Just like Anne Key, Cortney is an organizer and has demonstrated her leadership quickly. She has already organized her Junior Board by creating a timeline for the next 12 months, so the Juniors stay focused on what needs to be done and by when. A mentor program is being created that joins a Junior Board member with a CSBA Youth Support Committee member. Cortney will tell you that more gets done when everyone has a schedule and plan to accomplish goals.

The CSBA proudly congratulates Cortney Copeland!

SHOW & SALE TENTATIVE SCHEDULE

Nothing is more relevant to the sheep industry than artificial insemination. AI is “the” topic that CSBA members requested for this year’s NSS. The CSBA Promotion Committee called upon Dr. Jim Schoelerman from Everly, Iowa, to host the educational pop-up in Spencer. On Wednesday afternoon, Jim, with the help of his daughters Maddie and Adalyn, took us through the steps of sheep AI. The demonstration prompted a full afternoon of questions about tips for successful AI, how to perform embryo transfer, and the future of reproductive technology in sheep.

Jim and his sons, Ty and Zach (both of whom aspire to become veterinarians), are all trained and skilled in AI. Recently, the Schoelermans added a building dedicated to veterinary work and AI on their home farm. Jim and his family raise purebred Suffolk sheep and in recent years have added Babydolls. Schoelerman Babydolls have quickly gained national acclaim for their top-notch quality.

42 SPEAKING OF COLUMBIAS

The CSBA is honored to announce the 2023 Silver Bell Award Recipients: A & K Columbias, Tom and Kay Wright, Rick and Ann Wehri, and Karine West, from Newcastle, Wyoming. The Silver Bell is a lifetime achievement award which recognizes the member(s) dedication to promoting and advancing Columbia sheep. It also represents the contributions made by the honoree beyond the show ring.

When describing this year’s recipients, other Columbia breeders referenced A & K Columbias as producing good, solid Columbia sheep. They raised fine fleeced Columbias with substance and bone, and Columbias that could withstand the rigors of the western range. More importantly, the Wright and Wehri families were described as hardworking, good people who were dedicated to Columbia sheep, and always honest and trustworthy with consistently good sheep.

Like many sheep producers, sheep came to the Wright Ranch as bum lambs in 1975. The first Columbia ewes arrived in 1979 from the Troy Freeburg flock. In the 1980s, Mom (Kay) hauled children to county and state fairs with success coming quickly in the highly competitive Wyoming Columbia scene.

They have an impressive resume:

• 6 NSS Champion or Reserve Champion Pair of Ewes

• 5 NSS Champion or Reserve Champion Ewes

• 3 NSS Champion or Reserve Champion Rams

• Sold a $6,000 Junior ram lamb at the NSS

• 2002 – Won both the National Champion Ram and Ewe

• Hosted two National Shows and Sales in Douglas, Wyoming

• Kay was elected as the first female president of the CSBA in 1998

• Recognized as the 1999 Columbia Sheep Family of the Year

• A 20-year Consignor at the Newell Ram Sale

A & K Columbias always enjoyed attending any sheep show, especially the National. Kay and Ann often said, “Columbias are more fun when you share with others.” That is, certainly, their trademark as CSBA members.

CHAMPION PAIR OF EWES - 1990 NATIONAL COLUMBIA SALE 43 Vol. 67 - No. 2

Member of the WESTON BORCHER Year

Weston Borcher from Powell, Wyoming was presented with the Member of the Year Award at the 2023 National Show & Sale. Pictured from left to right: CSBA Ambassador Alyston Gull, Weston Borcher, Alison Crane, Presenter Dan Westlake

The Borcher family farm was located initially in Deaver, Wyoming, just down the road from the Borcher’s current home in Powell. Lynn Borcher, Weston’s uncle, ran the Borcher Hampshire flock. In 1966, Kenny, Weston’s uncle, acquired the family’s first Columbia sheep through a Sears Foundation Starter Flock program. Gene, Weston’s father, took over the Hampshires and Columbias when Kenny and Lynn. Gene was drafted during the Vietnam conflict and his parents took care of the sheep. The sheep stayed in Deaver until the 1990s when Weston’s grandparents retired from the farm in Deaver. The sheep transitioned to the ranch in Powell with Weston’s family.

Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, Gene and Ronda’s four children; Jeff, Danelle, Ashley, and Weston; managed and showed the Hampshire and Columbia breeds. However, it was Weston who had a passion for the sheep business. Weston learned how to shear and fit sheep at a young age. Today, Weston is recognized as an outstanding fitter and shears professionally throughout the year. Weston began a very successful showing career at a young age. He has produced multiple National Champions in the Columbia breed. Today, Borcher genetics are prominent on many pedigrees. Weston showed the 2018 National Reserve Champion Ewe and Reserve Champion Fleece. During the Covid year, a Borcher ewe was the highest-selling ewe on the National Columbia Online Sale. In 2011, Borcher Columbias repeated with the National Reserve Champion Ram. At the state level, Weston has exhibited numerous supreme and breed champions at the Wyoming State Fair.

Weston also served on the Columbia Board from 2013-2017. Recently, Weston dispersed his Columbia flock and will focus on his other breeds and commercial ewes. He has agreed to manage Brandt Columbia’s, Weston and Ron (Brandt) are developing an elite group of ewes produced from ELSA, a Louisville class-winning ewe, and several other exciting ewes the Brandt family acquired from Weston over the years.

Weston’s passion for breeding and creating high-quality sheep, and for the sheep business in general, is at the core of his success in the sheep industry. Whether breeding high-quality terminal range sires, Columbias, Rambouillets, Natural Coloreds, or commercial production ewes, Weston Borcher is uniquely adept in his approach and understanding of the genetic potential of a sheep. Today, that skill is rare in the sheep world.

Personally, Weston enjoys fly fishing, and fly tying. He is engaged to Alison Crane, Executive Director of the Wyoming Wool Growers Association. Together, they will continue to expand the Hampshire, Rambouillet, and commercial ewe flocks at Borcher Sheep Company.

COLUMBIA STARTER FLOCK PROGRAM ENTERS FIFTH YEAR

The Columbia Sheep Breeders awarded their seventh eighth flocks to beginning Columbia breeders at their an nual National Show and Sale held in Spencer, Iowa at the Clay County Fairgrounds. This program was adopted by the members six years ago and has been up and running successfully for five years.

The 2023 flocks were awarded to Sam Gullion from Somerville, Arkansas and Rachel Embree from Long Valley, South Dakota. Sam was gifted three females from Geerts Family, Gene va Hills and Henkel Family. The Henkels were the 2021 Starter Flock Recipients and donated back to the program. Sam selected a Leland Thiesen & Sons fall ram as his herd sire.

Rachel will start her Columbia flock with ewes from Fred and Kay Eagleson, Geneva Hills and Bredahl Columbias. She used her ram voucher to purchase a ram from Triple C Columbias.

This program has been very successful because of the members of the CSBA. Thank you to those who have donated females and advice to the new Columbia Breeders.

The Starter Flock Program is open to anyone over 18 years who has not been a Columbia sheep senior or junior member in the past. Applications are due March 1st. The Board of Directors will select a recipient by April 1st to be announced in the sale issue of Speaking of Columbias magazine. The recipient will receive one (1) ewe lamb, one (1) yearling ewe and one (1) brood ewe. The ewes will be donated by current CSBA members. The ewes will be registered in the Columbia Sheep Breeders Association and will have at least a QR status. The CSBA will assign a mentor who will be available to answer questions and provide advice to the recipient. The mentor will be a current (paid) CSBA member. The winner must be present at the National Show and Sale to receive the flock. At that time, the winner will be awarded the ewes and receive a $500 voucher to use toward the purchase of a ram at the National Show and Sale. In the second year, the CSBA will provide a $250 voucher for the purchase of any Columbia sheep at the following National Sale. In year five (5), the recipient must support the program with the donation of a female from their flock of any age or provide a monetary donation of $500 which would be used for the purchase of a female for the starter flock program out of the National Sale that year. The recipient must maintain their CSBA membership and registrations for five years. In the first five years if the recipient finds it necessary to liquidate their Columbia flock or cannot maintain them, he/she must notify the Association.

For an application or more details, please visit our website at https://columbiasheep.org/starter-flock-2/

If you would like to donate females or money to the Starter Flock Program, please email David Brown at genevahillsfarm@gmail or Charlie Worm at charliew@extendedag.com

Russell Bell was only a kid when neighbor Charles Archibald (Pine Tree Ranch) gifted the nine-year-old with a three-legged ewe that had clashed with a coyote. Russell chose the name “Sue” after Charles’ wife. A brief time later, Russell’s neighbor to the north dropped off a bummer Rambouillet to share a four-acre patch with Sue-the-ewe. In 1966, Russell added five Columbia ewes from the National Columbia Sale. Fast forward several decades and that kid has become a stalwart in the Columbia breed. Today Russell and Kathy Bell run a flock of 160 Columbia, 70 Targhee, 70 Rambouillet, and one hundred commercial ewes near Gillette, Wyoming.

Russell can tell story after story about his relationships and experiences in the Columbia breed and range business over the past seven decades. Russell recalls, “Heck, there were one hundred thousand sheep within a 50-mile radius of my place, once upon a time.” Russell says, “I remember a time when there were 30 yearling rams in a class at the Wyoming State Fair and National.” Russell still appreciates the days when Columbia sheep were inspected, and the blood system was used to define fleece type. He says he and Kathy have won too many awards in the Wyoming State Fair show ring and in fleece competitions to remember them all!

Russell has very fond memories of Earl Boller and the “Duke of Earl.” The “Duke of Earl” was the 1986 National Champion Columbia Ram (pictured to the left). Russell was sixteen years old at the time and went to see “Duke” before the NSS. He wanted that ram in the worst way, but he was unable to get to Great Falls to attend the National. Instead, his uncle went, along with instructions to bid on that special ram. Unfortunately, the ram sold for more than Russell’s budget would allow. It was a tremendous surprise when Russell learned his uncle kicked in the balance! The “Duke of Earl” came to the Bell Columbias for the price of $8,000! Russell took out a loan to reimburse his

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT 46 SPEAKING OF COLUMBIAS

uncle. When asked, Russell will tell you, “The “Duke” is the cheapest ram I ever bought!” He will also tell you that Earl Boller was instrumental, as a mentor and friend. “The Duke” sired the Bell’s Reserve National Champion Ram shown in 1988.

Over the years, Russell and Kathy have evolved in the type of sheep they raise. Since they have a strong range ram business, they raise rams that prove their productivity for other ranchers. For this reason, they have their own grading system that rates feet and legs, fleeces, wool covering on the head and face, and percentage of docked lambs, among other factors. They cull ewes heavily. They only select replacements with genetics to breed within 15 to 16 days, lamb without assistance, and raise offspring that come off of grass at close to 120 pounds. Russell and Kathy select a sizable number of replacement ewes each year to maintain these standards. The results are obvious in the number of range rams sold by the Bells each year.

Russell is particularly proud of his work with the county 4-H wool judging program. It began with showing kids how to evaluate wool on the sheep. Soon Russell was the full-time coach for the Converse and Campbell 4-H Wool Judging team. Coach Bell’s teams have been almost untouchable in terms of Championships. His teams have won more Wyoming State Championships than any other county. His teams have the Wyoming record for winning five state championships in a row.

The Bells are equally proud of their five daughters. Kimberly is the lead 4-H Agent in their home county. Billie is a certification specialist in an oil drilling operation. Christina is the regional supervisor for Walmart. Jackie and her family own and operate a tire retailer. Lisa works as a dental assistant. Kimberly, Billie, and Christina make up Rocking Star Columbias and are active on the ranch. The Bells have six grandchildren—four boys and two girls.

Russell is a true advocate for Columbia sheep. He says other breeds have been temporarily popular in range territory. However, the viability and the mothering traits of Columbia sheep still make the breed relevant. He believes this is the right time for the CSBA to regain a foothold in the commercial industry.
