It is hard to believe that it has already been six years since I first had the opportunity to serve on the Board of Directors of the Continental Dorset Club. The CDC is an icon and a fixture, and one of the strengths of our club is its stability. However, in these last few years, I have seen our organization change to fit the times and to advance itself. We have had a record number of youth grant applicants and we have updated our bylaws. We have met challenges to our integrity, championed changes in our national sale sites, and celebrated our 125th anniversary. We have honored our iconic secretary Debra Hopkins as she transitions out of service to our club, and we have welcomed our bright new Executive Secretary, Michelle Torrance, into the CDC.
Despite (or maybe because of) the diversity of our breed, I have watched our club grow stronger. Whether our sheep are horned or polled, fitted or slicked, pure or influenced by, Dorset breeders promote excellence across all divisions. I have faith that our breed will continue to be functional and prolific, without sacrificing breed character. I look forward to watching our organization serve as an example of efficiency, ethics, professionalism, and reliability. I am looking forward to watching our excellence as the Continental Dorset Club continue to develop, and as a Dorset breeder myself, I am filled with pride as I sign off and welcome a new president into this role.
I wish you the best of luck as you finish up lambing season and prepare for the sale season to begin. Take care!
Rachael Gately CDC PresidentI saw a meme the other day that said something to the effect of ‘No, my ducks are most definitely not in a row; some of them are missing and I’m pretty sure some of them are pigeons.’ I cannot think of a better way to describe the time that has passed since Debra’s retirement and my starting. It seems like anything that could happen did happen in trying to move the office from Rhode Island to Illinois. It is still a work in progress, so please be patient with us while we get everything finalized and moved.
I won’t make a habit of writing my two cents down, but when there is information that may affect the members and communicating with me, I will make a point to keep you informed. First and foremost – the day-to-day business has transitioned to Illinois. Please make note of the new contact information as the mail forwarding has ended and the old cdcdorset email address no longer comes into the office:

Secondly, we are slowly working our way through the website and making updates and changes as we go. We are currently working on making changes to the Registration Forms, so they should be updated soon. We are also just beginning to work on setting up an online process for New Registrations that would also include an online payment option. Check back on our Facebook page or website for an announcement when this is up and running! Please note: Transfers of sheep already registered will NOT be made available online. You will still need to mail in the original registration paper with the Transfer information filled out and signed to make a Transfer official.
An organization cannot go through more of a change than losing its leader. I think I speak for everyone in saying that Debra has been a tremendous leader and advocate for the Dorset breed. I am in awe of her knowledge of random things that she doesn’t give a second thought to. I cannot express enough appreciation to her for her patience and guidance with my daily barrage of questions. Hopefully she won’t block my calls or emails anytime soon!
Until next time, don’t forget to shut the gate.

CDC Lifetime members in the New England and Great Lakes Regions will be receiving voting ballots in early February for your Region’s Director. PLEASE make sure that you fill out these ballots and return them to the CDC by the voting deadline. Thank you in advance for your attention to this matter.
New England Region will be electing a new Director to replace Rachael Gately who will be retiring from the Board after her six years of service. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Rachael for her service and dedication to the Dorset breed!
All Active CDC Lifetime members will be receiving notification of proposed changes to the Continental Dorset Club’s By-Laws. These changes will be voted on at the 2024 Annual Meeting in Greenville, OH, so please make sure you carefully read what changes the Board is proposing before you cast your vote in March. This notification will also be posted on our website for viewing.
Green parchment is no longer being produced for printing and the printer was also not able to get the same tan parchment any longer. So going forward, if you register a Horned Dorset RAM – your Registration paper will be the color they call “aged”, and a Horned Dorset EWE Registration paper will be “ivory”. These colors are similar to Polled Dorset papers, so if you raise both, please make sure you file them correctly.
The CDC will once again be asking for 2024 All American Junior Show Breed Sponsorships. In February, a special class sponsorship list will be posted on social media listing approximately 60 class sponsor opportunities. The cost per sponsorship will be $40 each to cover the cost of our class winning awards. We had a great response last year, so we are looking forward to getting all the class sponsorship spots filled this year! These sponsorships are greatly appreciated by all the Dorset exhibitors.
Fundraising efforts will be kicking off soon for the AAJS show itself as well. The CDC will be sending out AAJS raffle tickets with your first return of registration work for the year. Please be supportive and return paid stubs. The AAJS will also be hosting their Benefit Online Semen Auction once again. As of publication of this newsletter, we could not confirm the date (usually mid-May) but keep checking Integrity Online Sales at www.integritylivestocksales.com, our Facebook page and the AAJS page and website for more information. If you have some semen available and would like to donate a few straws to a worthy cause, it would be much appreciated!
Since we are in the process of updating the Registration papers, we thought it would be a good idea to pull an article from the archives to help our newer members in filling out Registration papers.
1. Be proactive on your registrations and allow a minimum of 4-6 weeks before your first event when you will need registration papers. We all know that snail mail can take a very, very long time to get from point A to point B. Breed associations vary greatly in their time of turn around on paperwork. Also, paperwork sent in with issues will take a lot longer to get processed.
2. Make sure you are the owner listed on all of your DAM’s registration certificates.
3. Get all of the paperwork gathered before you sit down to fill out the forms.
A. Registration Form
B. Membership forms if you are a first-time registerer – adult or youth.
C. Schedule of Rates so you can make sure you are sending in the proper amount of money. Papers will not be sent out until payment has been received.
D. Certificate of Ram Services - if you do not own the SIRE of the lambs being registered
E. Any special paperwork to register A.I. or E.T. lambs.
4. Fill out the application form and make sure you put only one owner per Registration Form
A. Flock Name - This is the name/prefix you want to use to ID sheep coming from your flock and will be printed on the official Registration paper.
B. Private Flock Tag No – this is the number you choose to individually identify the animal being registered. The animal must have this number as a tag in their ear.
C. Sex – Ram (R), Ewe (E), Wether (W)
D. Birth Date – the date the lamb was born. If you have multiples born on each side of midnight – choose one side or the other.
E. Type of Birth – Single (S), Twin (TW), Triplet (TR), Quad (Q)

Grazing management and genetic selection can help your flock minimize the impact of parasites.
By Melanie Barkley, PSU Extension EducatorParasites continue to plague many sheep and goat producers throughout the grazing season. Internal parasites decrease growth rates and in high levels can even cause death. However, sheep and goat producers can follow several practices to minimize the impacts to their flock or herd. These practices center on grazing management, but can also include genetic selection principles.
Livestock pass internal parasite eggs in their manure. These eggs then hatch and go through several larval stages until they reach an infective stage. This can take as little as six days to go from egg to infective stage. Therefore, producers can use grazing rotations to stay ahead of this cycle. A key is to subdivide fields so that the animals have enough to eat for four to five days. Fields can be subdivided using temporary fencing such as poly-wire or electric net fence. These smaller areas allow sheep or goats to graze the forages present in the field more evenly. Rotate animals into a new field within five days in order to stay ahead of the parasite life cycle. In other words, the parasite larva reach the infective stage after the sheep or goats have moved out of that field.
Larva can survive for long periods, even as long as 120 days, when weather conditions are cool and moist. However, when the weather is hot and dry, those parasites can die very quickly. Therefore, the challenge comes when producers balance between these weather patterns to ensure that infective parasite larva are no longer present in the pastures. This can be much easier to write about than accomplish because the goal is to keep fields lush and growing, which creates a more ideal environment for the parasites. Harvesting fields for hay is one way to open up those areas to heat and sunlight in order to kill parasite larva. Another option is to have long rest periods so that the parasites die before the sheep return to that field to graze.
Parasites can also go into a hypobiotic or dormant state inside sheep or goats. Parasites can remain in this state until environmental conditions improve. Sheep and goat producers often see problems when this occurs during the summer. Animals graze pastures short during extended hot and dry weather conditions. Then, when weather conditions improve following a rain, a sudden parasite “bloom” occurs. Parasites that remained inside animals as well as parasites that remained in the egg stage develop very quickly to an infective state. This leads to very large numbers of infective parasites. Therefore, adequate rest periods of 65 days or more between grazings can be critical during the summer!
Multi-species grazing also contributes to breaking the parasite life cycle. While sheep and goats share many of the same parasites, cattle and horses do not. Cattle and horses grazed with sheep and goats help to break parasite life cycles because the sheep and goat parasites cannot survive in those other species. Sheep and goats can graze fields at the same time as cattle or horses, or they can graze in a leader-follower system. The leader-follower system allows one species to graze and then after an adequate rest period and forage regrowth, the other species grazes the field.
Another option to prevent parasite infections is to leave at least four inches of forage in the fields when animals move to the next field. Some producers will rotate sheep or goats at taller heights. Most parasite larva are found in the first two inches of forage growth, so the goal is to move the sheep and goats out of a field before they graze down to levels where parasite larva will be ingested.
A final option is to consider the genetics of the sheep and goats. Producers should keep records that identify when they treat animals for parasites. This information should include who was treated, date treated, and product used. Producers should also track withdrawal dates to ensure that no medication residues are present when sheep or goats go to market. Producers should cull animals that they consistently treat more often than most animals in the flock or herd. This allows producers to develop genetics that are more resistant to parasite infections. The parasites will still be present, but the animal’s immune system can better withstand the infection.
The National Sheep Improvement Program (NSIP) can take this selection practice a step further by identifying parasite resistant sheep and meat goats through Estimated Breeding Values. Producers develop these breeding values through fecal egg counts from each lamb or kid in the flock. Those individuals with higher resistance produce lower fecal egg counts. Producers enrolled in the program enter fecal egg count data along with other performance data and submit to NSIP. For more information on NSIP, check out their website or call their office at 515-708-8850.
Good pasture management as well as good selection practices can both lead to fewer parasite problems in sheep and goats.
