CDC President’s Message Rachael Gately
The 125th anniversary of the Continental Dorset Club is here. As one of the premier breeding sheep groups in the United States, we have a lot to be proud of. As breeders, we have come together to showcase our breed in all its diverse forms. Our Horned Dorsets, Polled Dorsets and Dorset Advantages are well-made, functional sheep, and there is a place for all of them, no matter how we choose to present our flocks. The Dorset is a powerhouse, multipurpose breed, known for yearround breeding, great mothering and high efficiency production. Together, we are putting these characteristics to work, whether our flock is several hundred head in commercial production or two ewes in a young 4H-member’s starter flock at home.

As our group heads into this special year in a world filled with controversy, let’s stick together and continue to shine. We shall continue to set strong examples for the young breeders. Diversity within a group is a positive; it makes us stronger. Breeding and registering sheep with honesty and integrity is the right thing to do. Enjoying what you’re doing while you’re doing it drives longevity. I hope the Continental Dorset Club and the variety of Dorsets it represents has a long and bright future. Let’s continue to work together to keep us at the front of the pack. See you all in Ohio in March and Sedalia in June!

Of the total 208 ewe lambs nominated 94 (45%) were purchased by junior buyers and were eligible for futurity participation. The futurity had a number of 6 group nominators. Deb also wanted to remind breeders with online sales to get the filled out Online Futurity Sales Nomination forms into the CDC office before the sale dates as online sales have contributed greatly to the program by offering over half of the ewe lambs nominated.
Breed Standard Education & Promotion: Jeremy Crouch moved to accept Jared Whitcomb onto the certified judges list. Glenn Stunkel seconded. Motion carried. Deb Hopkins reported that the CDC did not pay out on the Dorset Wether Incentive program. Deb reported DA breeders in Ohio and Pennsylvania have contacted the office about the showing of DA if a separate division is not offered for the as it the recommendation that they show in the AOB division since they are registered animals and do have a breed scorecard for them to be evaluated by. The board directed Deb to write letter to Ohio State Fair, Keystone International and Farm Show on the policy.
Newsletter/Webpage: Deb Hopkins reported that the 2021 Fall Edition was completed as an online edition. It was posted on the CDC website and there was no advertising support. Deb Hopkins presented a proposal from Katherine Kuykendall to become the editor of the Dorset Connection. All-American Junior Show: Deb Hopkins reported that the 2023 All American will be at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison, WI from June 29-July 2. The Wisconsin committee is working hard and getting organized to host a great event. Deb will put together the CDC class sponsorship list and publicize next spring. We will also need to get a couple of ewe lambs do-
nated to sell with proceeds going to the show or two large $500 donations. The CDC does gave an overflow of $960 from last year so there is a good start to raising this years breed commitment of $3550. Deb will also once again send out AAJS raffle tickets in breeder’s first registration work of the year and will appreciate folks retuning the sold tickets to support the show. The AAJS will once again be doing the Ram Semen Benefit Online auction in the spring and we need some lots of Dorset semen offered to help support the ever growing All American.

It will be March 2022 on Show Circuit Online Sales. Allison is looking for animals, semen, or anything sheep related for the sale. Consignors can donate all or a percentage of their sales. Last year the sale generated almost $4000 for the association so they could carry out their scholarship, ewe purchase grant programming for the youth and All American programming. The NJDA voted in the following board of directors: Breanna Knittel, IL; Madelyn Syme, CT; Emma Oberholtzer, PA; Kylie Schakel, IN, Megan Smith, MT, Braxton Young, KS and Owen Torrance, IL. Dorset Hall of Fame: Deb Hopkins reported that the CDC is in need of more Hall of Fame nominations so inductee(s) can be recognized at upcoming CDC Annual Meetings. Deb will also put a plea out on the CDC Facebook page.
OLD BUSINESS:

Deb noted that Sedalia is shortening up by one day but it doesn’t have a great effect on the Dorsets except the wether sires and dams will be shown on Thursday and sold on Saturday. Fitted Dorsets will be shown on Wednesday and sold on Friday, and will be housed in the Sheep Barn. The CDC Annual Membership Meeting and Hall of Fame Induction will be at the Ohio Dorset Sale on Friday, March 17 soon after the sale show. Deb is getting a special anniversary logo developed to be used on awards, banners and promotional items next year. Deb will contact the Ohio Dorset breeders to see if we can do something a bit more elaborate for the social hour/party with the CDC sponsoring. It was also suggested to come up some special promotional items for the consignors and buyers at the National Sales, both Ohio and Sedalia.
NAILE National Dorset Shows: Directors in attendance reported on the 2023 shows at NAILE. The show numbers were very steady from last year. Deb reported that all banners, rosettes and mint julep cups were presented and the help in the show rings was back up to normal. Secretary’s Travel: The board requested that the executive secretary personally attend the 2023 National Sale at the Ohio Dorset Sale, May Ohio Showcase Sale if possible, All American Junior Show in Wisconsin and NAILE. Deb will make arrangements to get the class winning photos from Sedalia posted to the CDC Facebook page and will promote sale from afar on the Facebook page. Rachael Gately or Katherine Kuykendall possibilities for getting pictures posted.

Respectively submitted, Debra Hopkins, CDC Secretary/Treasurer

CDC CELEBRATING ITS 125TH YEAR IN 2023
2023 will bring the Continental Dorset Club’s 125th birthday! The CDC developed a special 125th Anniversary logo that will appear on all of the CDC sponsored awards for the year and we will also be celebrating with some special promotional items sporting the special anniversary logo. Thank you to Katherine Kuykendall for designing it for us! The Annual Membership Meeting at the 2023 Ohio Dorset Sale will be where the 125th celebration will primarily take place and kick off. Stay tuned on the CDC Facebook page for details. Promotional items are being ordered with the 125th logo and they will be first available at the Annual Meeting in Ohio and then later in the year at major events or by contacting the CDC office.

The CDC has worked hard promoting the Dorset breed and its influence in the US Sheep industry for the past 125 years, inside and outside of the show ring. The major focus being on meeting all Dorset breeder needs no matter what type of Dorset they raise to satisfy their breeding program goals. The CDC registers and supports Polled Dorsets, Horned Dorsets and Dorset Advantages whether they are frame, production, or wether type oriented. Programs have been done over the past 25 years to encourage the Dorset breed characteristics to remain a major focus of the breed and to keep its ease of out of season breeding an important part of the breed along with its proficient lambing, excellent mothering and milking abilities in the barn and field. Them providing these maternal traits along with great carcass qualities to boot makes the Dorset breed an important piece in the commercial sheep industry.
The CDC remains focused on promoting the Dorset breed among junior folks as they have developed an ever expanding
Dorset futurity program, the National Junior Dorset Association, the hugely popular Ewes For Youth Grant program, the Annual Tracy Repasky Scholarship Award, supports six regional Junior Shows every year plus the All American Junior Show and National Junior Dorset Shows at the North American Livestock Exposition. Junior involvement in the Dorset breed is also important for breed growth. The CDC also started the Dorset Advantage registry to promote and identify the purebred Dorset genetics in the crossbred scenarios of wether type show sheep. Juniors love to buy these animals with all of their varying color patterns and the program has introduced many new young breeders into the Dorset breed.

The CDC office has modernized in the past 25 years and has much more to do. Making the office as efficient as possible and to communicate on a regular basis with its membership has been a priority. Providing quick turnaround registration service to breeders has always been the top priority. Times have changed, and the CDC deals with many new breeders and owners that have come into the breed, as much more time is spent educating new folks to the Dorset breed and it’s registry process. Ease of getting registration applications into the office has become more digital over the years but breeder integrity is still of utmost importance in the registry process. The CDC maintains that integrity on their end and expects the same of its membership and breeders.
The Dorset breed continues to play an important part in the US Sheep industry and the main reason for that is the breed attributes themselves. It is actually a pretty easy job to talk to interested future sheep raisers on the breed attributes and what Dorsets can contribute to a sheep operation: commercial, farm flock or junior project. The CDC will continue to promote and support the Dorset breed to ensure its future in the US for the next 125 years!

EASTERN & NORTH CENTRAL DIRECTOR ELECTIONS
Just a reminder to all CDC lifetime members in the North Central & Eastern Regions that you will be receiving voting ballots in early February for your area’s director. PLEASE make sure that you fill out these ballots and return to the CDC by the voting deadline. Thank-you in advance for your attention to this matter.
The Eastern region is electing a new director to replace Glenn Stunkel, Jr. who will be retiring off the board after his six years of service. Thank you Glenn for your service and dedication to the Dorset breed!
2023 ALL AMERICAN JUNIOR SHOW DORSET BREED SPONSORSHIP
The CDC will once again be campaigning for the 2023 All American Junior Show Breed Sponsorship. In February a special class sponsorship list will be posted on social media and we need to find approximately 60 class sponsors of $40 each to cover the cost of our class winning awards. We did come up a bit short last year on the class sponsorships so looking forward to getting all of those classes supported! We certainly appreciate the support of the Dorset kids, no matter what type of Dorset they raise.
We have yet to receive any additional donation of ewe lambs to be sold at public auction to benefit the show directly. If you are interest in supporting this special show that will take place in Wisconsin this year, please contact the CDC office. All of this funding will go directly towards the Dorset breed sponsorship. The All American also has general fundraising activities to help offset the other incurred costs of putting on the show. The CDC will be sending out AAJS raffle tickets with your first return of registration work for the year. Please be supportive and return paid stubs. Last year Dorset breeders bought well over $600 worth of raffle tickets and that was very much appreciated!
The AAJS will be hosting their Benefit Online Semen Auction once again on May 15, 2023 at the Integrity Online Sale Site. Please contact Mike Crowder directly at www.integritylivestocksales.com or cell: (765) 366-3135 with your Dorset semen donations. Last year we did not have many semen lots from the Dorset breed so, if you have some valued semen available and would like to donate a couple of straws to this worthy cause, that would be great. Love it when the Dorset breed represents! Thank you in advance of your support of this special junior Dorset event.
GUIDELINES FOR REGISTERING HORNED DORSETS: Pure Horned VS Normal Horned
The Horned Dorsets are gaining popularity among the new influx of young exhibitors in the junior shows across the country. The rules for what makes up a “Pure Horned Dorset” have been in place with the Continental Dorset Club since back in the 1950’s when the Polled Dorset mutation first appeared in the Dorset breed. While many of the established Horned breeders know these rules and regulations for registry, many of the new folks do not and it is becoming an issue of animals that should be registered as “Normal Horned” are showing up entering shows that are for “Pure Horned Dorsets”.
The Rules Guide for the Continental Dorset Club reads as follows:
All applications for sheep having polled breeding must indicate the degree of polledness for each animal. The code letters for this are: P Polled, S - Scurred, NH Normal Horned. Pure Horned Dorsets, those with NO polled breeding, have no prefix code letters. No scur or horn can be cut back for the purpose of misrepresenting the true condition of the animal. However, we do recommend that scurs be trimmed to avoid the possibility of their growing into the head of the animal. Trimming of scurs is acceptable; but it is not recommended to attempt to “de horn” the animal. The Certificate of any sheep registered, as Polled that subsequently develops scars or horns should be returned to the office for correction.
The Pure Horned Dorset have no pre fix assigned to them and their pedigree needs to have only Pure Horned Dorset blood in them. These animals’ registration papers are printed on green (rams) and tan (ewes) parchment paper, and reads “Pure Horned Dorset” in the upper right hand corner in big bold print. All of the animals in their pedigree are of pure Horned Dorset blood, there are no–prefixes in front of their ancestors’ registration numbers. This registry is kept separate from the Polled registry.
As soon as a as a breeder introduces a purebred Dorset that has Polled blood in it, it disqualifies the animal resulting from that mating from the Pure Horned Dorset Registry. However,

the animal is still a purebred Dorset and is eligible to be registered but it now goes into the Polled Dorset Registry. If it has a normal set of horns (full curl) they will be registered with the NH (normal horn) designation, if they have a Scur they will carry the S prefix and if they have no horn growth at all then they will carry the P prefix. The horn growth needs to be designated on the registration application form under column # 3. Corrections can be made to these horn growth designations if they change as an animal matures. The original paper needs to be mailed into the CDC office for the correction to be made.
The confusion comes in when folks who have Dorsets registered with NH (normal horn) prefixes enters into the Horned Dorset division at shows and sales. At shows and sales that require registration papers and offer Horned Dorset classes, then only the Pure Horned Dorsets are allowed to participate in those classes. The NH registered Dorsets are still very much eligible to show but they need to be shown in the Polled Dorset classes because they carry Polled Dorset blood in them. There are shows out there that offer “Horned Dorset Classes” but do not require registration papers and go by a classification system only, in those cases yes, a Dorset that classifies as a Horned Dorset based on it breed characteristics and normal horn growth can show in that show’s Horned Dorset class. But that is the only scenario where it is allowed and the Continental Dorset Club does not support shows that offer Dorset breed type classes with no registration papers required. It creates a lot of confusion on the part of the owners and really does a dis-service to the Pure Horned Dorset as an established breed. If you still have any questions just contact the CDC office at 401-647-4676.

2023 DORSET YOUTH GRANT PROGRAM WINNERS ANNOUNCED
The 2023 winners of the Dorset Youth Ewe Purchase Grants are Senior Division: Denali Bosco, OR; Intermediate Division: Zoey Jacob, NC and Ellie Ann Johnson, AR; and Junior Division: Jayci White, KY and Chloe Knepper, IA.
All recipients will receive $500 towards the purchase of a registered, purebred Dorset ewe. The CDC received 89 applications from well deserving youth, hence additional grants were added for the Junior and Intermediate age group which had a large number of applicants. The applicants range from youth just starting out with their sheep projects to those looking to improve the quality of their Dorsets or looking for another breed to
get involved in. It was nice to award five grants this year to help get out funding to young Dorset breeders to assist them in getting their Dorset breeding programs established. It is inspiring to see all of the sheep industry’s youth from across the country interested in getting more established in the Dorset breed. The ewe grant program awards at least one grant to the following three age divisions: Junior 8 to 10 years of age; Intermediate 11 to 14 years of age; Seniors 15-18 years. Additional questions have been added to the application and a scoring rubric has been developed for the selection committee. Don’t miss out on applying for these grants next year. December 1st deadline. Applications are available on the CDC website: www.continentaldorsetclub.com

Prevent Health Issues Through Biosecurity and Good Management Practices
By Melanie Barkley, PSU Extension EducatorWith the antibiotic label changes set to go into effect in June 2023, now would be a great time for producers to analyze areas in their operation where they can prevent health issues. A common practice that all producers should utilize involves developing a biosecurity plan to prevent disease organisms from being introduced to sheep on your farm.
Basic biosecurity measures generally involve three main aspects:
• Quarantine of new animals or animals that return to the farm
• Protocols for visitor or equipment traffic to the farm
• Standard operating procedures for sanitation on the farm

Any new animals arriving at a farm, or those returning to the farm from shows, should be housed in a quarantine area for a minimum of three to four weeks. This quarantine area could be a separate barn, or it may be an area in the main barn where these sheep do not have nose to nose contact with other farm animals. These quarantined animals should be fed last and should also be monitored for any disease issues, particularly for any foot related problems.
The second biosecurity measure establishes protocols to prevent spreading diseases to your farm. Producers should develop a protocol for any visitors or equipment that come to their farm. Visitors may be asked to sanitize their footwear by scrubbing with a disinfectant solution or walking across a special mat that contains a disinfectant solution. Equipment, such as feed trucks or trucks and trailers picking up sheep, can also be disinfected by driving across special disinfectant mats. It is particularly important to disinfect equipment if it enters areas where sheep have access. But the best option would be to not allow these vehicles to enter barnyards or pastures. Another aspect of traffic control involves farm family members that visited a location where they had contact with livestock. Family members should be sure to change shoes and clothing before they have any contact with your livestock or livestock facilities. Family members should also wash their hands prior to having any contact with your livestock.
The last biosecurity measure involves sanitation and husband-
ry practices that keep sheep housing and handling facilities sanitary. Clean feeders and watering systems on a regular basis to prevent fecal contamination. Don’t forget to clean up any spilled feed, including hay, that could attract rodents. Producers who travel to shows should be sure to disinfect feeding and fitting equipment when they return home.
Good husbandry practices also include ensuring good quality air and ventilation in barns, feeding high quality feed free from molds and mycotoxins, and providing clean fresh water for animals to drink. Keeping pens well bedded will also promote good health.
American Sheep Industry has developed a guide to direct producers in developing a more advanced biosecurity plan for their farm. This Guide to the Secure Sheep and Wool Supply Plan covers additional aspects such as how a farm will continue business if a foreign animal disease outbreak restricts animal movements in your area. In order to restart animal movements, producers will need to meet certain requirements to obtain a special permit from regulatory officials. More information about this plan can be found at securesheepwool.org or by contacting a sheep Extension specialist or agent in your state.
In addition to biosecurity, producers can follow good nutrition practices to prevent health issues. Research has shown that good nutrition boosts immune system function. Good immune system function helps protect animals from disease and helps sheep have better resilience to internal parasite infections. When considering nutrition, producers often overlook the importance of access to fresh clean water. Poor quality water will limit feed intake, which impacts nutrition. In addition to feed and water, sheep should have access to a high-quality salt and mineral mix formulated for sheep. These minerals and vitamins can greatly impact the health status plus animal performance. For pregnant females, good mineral nutrition will help to prevent health issues such as milk fever, retained placentas, and pregnancy toxemia. Good ewe nutrition can also carry over to newborn lambs by promoting lamb health and vigor at birth as well and promoting production of good quality and quantity of colostrum. When it comes to vaccinations, good nutrition can result in a better immune response to vaccines.
When considering any aspects associated with health, be sure to work with your local veterinarian to develop health management protocols for your farm. This veterinary client patient relationship, also known as a VCPR, will not only help prevent health issues on your farm. It will be particularly important if animals require antibiotic treatments.
