Time. Time only exists to mankind. If you could ask a dog, cow, horse or a tree what time it is, they would say the time is right now. They live in the NOW. We can all learn something from this.
After two years of drought our cows have proven their genetics correct. With less grass than ever, they made the most of their environment. Weaning weights were up and the cows did not lose condition. They were not supplemented but rotationally grazed and worked for everything they ate. Conception rates remained the same as good grass years. If you want to buy bulls from a cowherd that works for a living you are in the right place!
We cull deeply for udder and foot quality, and especially disposition.
After weaning, the calves are on a high roughage diet during the winter and spring. Come summer they head out to native Sandhills pasture. We rotationally graze them through the fall with the only supplement being a good salt and mineral program. Starting three months before sale day we supplement them with six pounds of a corn/distillers blend and protein to get ready for the sale. What you see is what they really are. They will hold condition during breeding and last longer, breeding more cows over the years. The testimonials speak for themselves.
Each year the bulls get more consistent. Every bull we brought to town is for sale. We will not be bidding against you. Guarantee:
All bulls have passed a breeding soundness exam in November 2022 and sell as guaranteed breeders. In the event of infertility, a replacement will be made available or a future sale credit will be offered in the amount of the purchase price minus salvage value. To protect your bull from a broken tool, leg, or death it is recommended to purchase livestock insurance. The total cost of the insurance is 11% of the purchase price for bulls under $10,000 and 12.5% of the purchase price for bulls over $10,000. Orton Ranch Red Angus will pay half of the percentage while the customer pays the other half. If customer chooses to decline the policy, Orton Ranch has no obligation to cover any losses due to injury or death.
All heifers are guaranteed to be bred on the day of the sale as they will have been checked on Friday, January 13, 2023. They were ultrasound in September 2022 by Dr. Finney. They were all poured with dectomax and vaccinated with Vira-shield 6+VL5.

Philosophy
We are developing a program that emphasizes slow, natural development and focuses on maternal, moderate, and easy fleshing traits. Replacement heifers are chosen based on how they breed up in their cycles, size, fleshing ability, and overall visual confirmation. In our environment, harder doing cows naturally fall out of the herd.
Bull Development
“A
Different Kind of Test”
Our coming two year old bulls are grown slowly and naturally so they maintain condition during breeding season and won’t fall apart on you. They will also breed more cows over their lifetime. These bulls develop through a different kind of “test” or selection process. As yearlings they spend the summer on native Sandhills grass. Three months before the sale they receive 6 pounds of a corn distillers mix alongside pasture and free choice native grass hay. All bulls in the sale have passed breeding soundness tests and are easy fleshing.
Females
We are very proud of our mother cows for all we expect and require of them during the year. We run our cattle in thick, steep canyon pastures, so structural correctness and good feet are a must. Mother is expected to make the most of her environment traveling the canyons while maintaining her condition, raising a good calf, and breeding back. These cows are efficient, deep bodied and there’s not a mean one in the bunch!
Our cows are bred to be easy fleshing and are managed that way. They go to work everyday without pampering. We run them the same way we ran our commercial herd. If they are open in the fall, raised a bad calf, or are poor doing, they get culled.
OCC, Beckton, 5L, PCC, and Ozark Hills genetics are working very well for us in the Sandhills and also for our customers throughout the country. Not only are they nice to look at and gentle, but they are moderately framed, easy fleshing and stacked with strong maternal qualities.

Mr. Sandman is one of the best 84S sons that we’ve ever seen! He’s truly a Sandhills bull... moderate, easy fleshing, and thick. He’s a true “herd builder” bull that sires smooth deep bodied sons and daughters. We’ve owned him now for 5 years and originally was used on our commercial cows that we owned prior to purchasing the Bruns Red Angus herd. We could see year after year the improvement that he made in our replacement heifers and steers. Docility Matters!
There are different ways to measure disposition throughout the cattle industry but overall it is all about the relative docility and handling ability of animals during processing in a working facility. We take the time to run each bull inbetween us, down the alley in order to assign them a score.
A bull with no issues, that is quiet, will receive a score of 3 stars. Any bull who shows a little nervousness is dropped down to 2.5 stars. Anthing with a little more hesitation will recieve a 2 star score. We care about disposition at Orton Ranch Red Angus and stand by our goal of only offering you easy handling cattle.

1. BIDDING
The Auctioneer in charge will settle any disputes as to bids, and his decision on such matters shall be final.
2. TERMS
Terms of sale are cash unless satisfactory credit arrangements have been made with Sale Management prior to sale.
3. PURCHASER’S RISK
Each animal becomes the risk of the Buyer as soon as sold, but it shall be the obligation of the Seller to see that animals are fed and cared for free of charge to Buyer, until loaded for shipment or until the expiration of 48 hours after the sale, whichever occurs sooner.
4. CERTIFICATE OF REGISTRY
A transferred certificate of registry will be furnished to the Buyer for each animal.
5. HEALTH
All animals are eligible for interstate shipment, except as otherwise announced. Interstate health papers will be furnished for each animal in accordance with prevailing State/Federal Regulations.
6. ANNOUNCEMENTS
Announcements from the auction block shall take precedence over the sale catalog and/or any additional information printed regarding the animal(s) sold.
7. LIABILITY
All persons who attend the sale do so at their own risk. The seller, auction facility, and sale manager assume no liability for any accidents or losses that may occur.
8. CONTRACT
The above terms and conditions of the sale shall constitute a contract between the buyer and seller of each animal and shall be equally binding upon both. Each sale or resale of an animal constitute a separate transaction.

ProS ... Profitability and Sustainability is an all-purpose index that predicts average economic differences in all segments in the beef supply chain. This index is a combination of the breeding objectives modeled in the HerdBuilder and GridMaster selection indexes. In this index, replacement heifers are retained from within the herd and all remaining progeny are fed out to slaughter and sold on a quality-based grid. Traits included in this index include calving ease, growth, HPG, STAY, Mature Weight, Dry Matter Intake and carcass traits. The resulting index is expressed in dollars per head born (Index/High Value).
HB ..... HerdBuilder is a maternal selection index that predicts the economic differences of animals for traits that are important from conception through weaning. Expressed as dollars per head born, HB is calculated based on the scenario that bulls are mated to heifers and cows, replacement heifers are retained and all remaining progeny are marketed at weaning. Traits included in the HB index include Calving Ease Direct, Calving Ease Maternal, Weaning Weight, Milk, Mature Weight, Heifer Pregnancy and Stayability (Index/High Value).

Tribute to Jackie Dee Orton

My dad passed away on Thanksgiving morning which was a special day because it allowed me to contemplate the gratitude that I have for my good parents. It brings great peace knowing that he is no longer in pain and that he has reunited with my mother. And above all my father lived a devoted life to his Father in Heaven and his Savior Jesus Christ. He loved the scriptures and enjoyed teaching from them. Dad lived most of his life in Utah. He always loved coming out to Nebraska to be on the ranch and help brand the calves. I had the opportunity to speak at his funeral and I joked that he and I had consumed more biscuits and gravy together than any two other human beings in the history of the earth. He always enjoyed making a loaf of bread in the kitchen or being outside working on a woodworking project.
He will be greatly missed and I will always be grateful for his example of faith and dedication to things spiritual. We would like to dedicate our 5th bull sale to him.
