DIRECTOR’S EXHIBITIONS MESSAGE
W
hat an exciting time at the KIA! Travel the world with us through three exhibitions of contemporary art featuring innovative works by artists from China, Korea, and Japan. Journey with us to an imaginative and intellectual space where words and images merge in Second Sight/Insight II, a presentation of art and poetry together. Experience the energy and enthusiasm of our youngest artists as their work adorns the galleries in the Young Artists and High School Area Show exhibitions this spring. And explore the legacy of African Americans and women in the arts through new programs for Black History Month in February and Women’s History Month in March. This season, we aim to deepen your appreciation for diversity in American art and broaden exposure to world cultures with an exhilarating series of exhibitions, programs, and classes. Join us March 6 for a rededication ceremony in the Kirk Newman Art School, with the artist himself in attendance. We are proud to honor and
continue Mr. Newman’s legacy of providing quality arts education to the community. We will announce a major gift to the school, which will help expand our scholarship and outreach programs to serve more youth, families, and public school teachers. Last fall, we hosted our first-ever faculty day, welcoming 55 arts faculty from colleges and universities throughout West Michigan. We shared meaningful conversation about how both the museum and the art school can collaborate with them to propel area students toward greater success in the arts. We had a marvelous partnership with the K-Wings Hockey Team for “ Kids Paint the Ice” in early January. Families and kids associated with both organizations came out to create a big, frosty work of art that the team played hockey on the following weekend. We are one, the museum and school, as the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts. We are one with the community, united in enriching the lives of others and creating more arts learning opportunities in West Michigan.

Local Artists Complete “Touch Art” Sculptures
We added two sculptures by area artists to our collection in December. Designed for the experience of blind and visually impaired patrons, they were funded by a grant from the Michigan Braille Transcribing Fund and crafted by artists Paul Ponchillia and Steve Curl. The KIA has offered a special tour program for visually impaired guests since 2011, developed with members of Kalamazoo ‘s visually impaired community. More than 150 visitors have participated in the program.

Spotlight: Jerre James
A devoted student of the KIA art classes since the early 1960s, Jerre James trained as a ballet dancer, performed on big city stages, and opened a Kalamazoo dance school. Perhaps her love of the arts is in her DNA, since her uncle, Robert Paul Locke, was the first president of the KIA, “back when it was in a house.” We are grateful to Jerre for a generous $50,000 gift to support museum education, which is very close to her heart. A docent for 20 years, her passion continues for the work. “It’s about helping guests understand how to engage with art. ‘What do you see?’ ‘What do you feel?’”

“I’ll never forget a high school student, after guiding a Chihuly tour years ago,” she recalls. “I overheard him in the hallway, and he said, ‘That was the most wonderful thing! I had no idea what art was about or what you could do with glass.’ He had been totally sober going in, but he was so excited afterwards. That kind of thing makes you feel like you’ve accomplished what you set out to do.”

Young Artists of Kalamazoo County

Our annual exhibition by the community’s youngest artists is one we are always delighted to host. For a few weeks, our galleries are filled with the most creative, colorful, whimsical, and endearing art by K-8 students in public and private county schools. Submissions are selected by the students’ art teachers. Sponsors:
High School Area Show and 6th District Congressional Art Competition April 25 – May 24
This annual juried exhibition is open to artists age 18 and younger in grades 9-12 from Allegan, Barry, Berrien, Branch, Calhoun, Cass, Kalamazoo, St. Joseph, and Van Buren counties. This year’s juror is Greg Waskowsky, recently retired after a 40-year career as curator at the KIA. Last year, students were awarded nearly $300,000 in scholarships, with top awards going to seniors La Quint Robinson of Benton Harbor, Skylar Sparks of Comstock, Nicole Rielley of Kalamazoo, Nathan Stevens of Portage, and Sarah Nielsen-Hanichen of Vicksburg. Cash prizes are selected by the juror and scholarships are awarded by the Kirk Newman Art School, Cleveland Institute of Art, Kendall College of Art and Design, and Western Michigan University’s Frostic School of Art. The winner of the 6th District Congressional Art Competition will receive a trip to Washington, DC, to see his or her art on view in the U.S. Capitol. Chinese Folk Pottery: The Art of the Everyday March 14 – June 21
As China continues its headlong rush into modernization, the traditional techniques and practice of crafting folk pottery are in danger. The curators of Chinese Folk Pottery traveled to China to collect regional examples of decorative or utilitarian folk ware. They discovered that while some qualities and techniques are widespread across China, others are localized to specific ethnic communities or regions. The collection includes ceramics by Tibetan, Dai, Miao, Bai, and Han potters, which provide a rare glimpse of the diversity and rich tradition in Chinese folk pottery. This exhibition was organized and curated by Marie Woo, Susanne Stephenson, and John Stephenson. Sponsor: Joy

Bruce Smith The Art of Industry February 11, 10 am Mr. Smith will speak on design as response to human need, building to learn, and making ideas tangible. He is Director of Design for Steelcase Inc., the global leader in the office furniture industry. He has served in numerous capacities with the firm for nearly 30 years, including as manager of design for systems furniture and senior industrial designer. Debra Force In Praise of American Art April 8, 7 pm Antiques Roadshow appraiser Debra Force is a former Senior Vice President at Christie’s in New York. Collection Highlights In honor of Black History Month (February) and Women’s History Month (March), we offer works by Renée Stout. Some artists create imaginary portraits that correspond to their personal impression of a person. Such works often emphasize the subject’s symbolic significance. Famous for her beauty and occult powers, Marie Laveau was a Voodoo priestess who captivated New Orleans in the 1800s. Renée Stout evokes Laveau’s mesmerizing presence through such details as the snake mysteriously emerging from her hair. Black History Month Programs

George N’Namdi, founder and director, N’Namdi Center for Contemporary Art, Detroit Art dealer and educator George N’Namdi began collecting art in 1968 and now holds one of the finest private collections of African American art in the world, spanning more than a century of art in every genre. In 1981, N’Namdi opened his first art gallery, and today, the N’Namdi Center for Contemporary Art is a nonprofit organization dedicated to using art to build community and create a sense of place, promoting and preserving the work of recognized and local artists and inspiring people through art. The final firing will be a large pit fire where materials we have collected over the term will bring life to our work. Non-member registration begins February 16. We encourage students to sign up early, as some classes fill up quickly and others may be cancelled due to lack of enrollment (resulting in a full refund). Registration may be done in person, by mail, fax, online, or over the phone. Payment in full is required, and we accept cash, check, Visa, MasterCard, and Discover. Scholarships We offer 200 scholarships annually based on financial need, plus three merit awards sponsored by the Kalamazoo Art League. Application forms are available at kiarts.org/school, or at the school office. Scholarship deadline for Summer 2015 classes is May 5. Refunds A $30 registration fee is withheld from all refunds. An additional $30 is withheld after the first class. No refunds are given the day of second class. Refunds for classes meeting eight weeks or less will only be given the day of the first class meeting. No refunds for art camps after the first day of camp. Refund requests for one- or two-day workshops and visiting-artist workshops may be made up to one week before the workshop begins or as stated. An additional workshop registration fee may be withheld if noted in the class schedule. A $30 returned check fee will be charged by the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts. These policies are strictly enforced.
Lockers are available for rental. Cancellations: In the event of dangerous weather, students should visit kiarts.org, the KIA on Facebook or Twitter, local broadcast media WWMT and WKZO, or phone the KIA at (269) 349-7775. When possible, classes will be rescheduled. School Dismissal Policy If a student’s or visitor’s behavior is deemed to be rude, disruptive or inappropriate, the instructor maintains the right to dismiss the person from the class with a warning. Students suspected of any form of substance abuse, including but not limited to drugs or alcohol, will be removed from the premises, given a warning and not be allowed to return prior to an interview and approval by the Director of the School. In the event of subsequent behavior problems or suspicion of substance abuse, they will be dismissed from the KIA without benefit of class refund or access to further programming. Students found removing KIA property from the bulding will be dismissed. Photography: The KIA reserves the right to photograph activities that occur on its premises for promotional purposes. Policy changes: The KIA reserves the right to withdraw or change classes, instructors, or schedules; to revise tuition and fee structures; and/or to amend its policies as necessary for the smooth and efficient operation of the institution.
