Nestled near the Congaree River and the outskirts of Columbia the town of Cayce, South Carolina, is looking toward the future. Their 35,000 sqft civic center will house a black box theater, gallery space, cafe, and multipurpose art spaces. PROJECT CONCEPT An architectural study of human behavior where health and wellness are seamlessly integrated with productivity and creativity. To accomplish this, we are designing a workplace that blurs the distinctions between work and leisure, erasing boundaries and supporting fluidity. By designing a dynamic facade system with inhabitable spaces, distant views of the city, and stairs for mobility. The occupants’ mental and physical health will be engaged through this expression of stairs, mezzanines, bridges, and inhabitable walls.

ROOTED IN COMMUNITY

The town of Cayce is rooted in community creating spaces and structures that prioritize the collective well-being and needs of the towns people in all they do. By analyzing what is currently present allowed me to have a puzzle that I could make the final price to. The design strives to enhance quality of life and foster a sense of belonging. The space must demand engagement of the pedestrians and locals so that the community can take ownership and inspire the next generation to create.

THE CROWN : Field House Amidst the serene waters of Clemson, is a sanctuary where winds whisper their tales and a culture supports an environment of gathering. The existing structures, weathered by time, no longer cradle the aspirations oft the sailing club. Crafting a new field house was akin to sculpting a haven, where the art of sailing can flourish, and camaraderie can unfurl its sails,. The design of The Crown gives attention to an area of campus that is being sculpted for the next generation of Clemson Athletics. Thus further supporting the experience of the students and addressing their needs across campus.

GATHER The roof design was heavily influenced by the wind on the site and how it could mirror the reaction of a sail to the wind. Providing shelter and interest to the gathering space. With the main focus being a goal to create a gathering space for the sailing team I decided a circular floor plan would help encourage and motivate gathering to take place.

The model making helped me interpret how to address a sites topography for the first time.

While I was building I realized an observation deck could be added and additional space could be developed to promote the projects major goal of creating a space to gather. If I were to further develop this model I would add acrylic in place of water to make a distinction of where the land and lake meet. I would also include scaled figures to give a frame of reference for the model.

Shower Design

The beginning of the project we were given a president and our section was tasked with using a detail from the precedent in the design of a shower/changing room. I was given Girsberger’s Netherlands house. When designing a wall detail from that I became more interested in the interlocking of the wood panels which I transformed to make the floor of my shower.

Also in the same manor of my president design I wanted the idea of blending in with nature to influence the style. Wood panels are used on the interior and exterior to provide privacy.

ENIGMATIC COMPRESSION Arch 2510, Sophomore Year Professor Janelle Schmidt Partner: Chloe Craig Project one of 2nd year, first semester, was called Clueless and Glue-less. Our studio was given the task to explore materiality and new ways to model and design. Our foundation for our section was to pick a song that we were interested in and to use that as a force for our design. My partner and I chose Speak Now by Taylor Swift and analyzed intervals of the song as well as it’s overall message to drive our design. We found that when the message of the song was at it’s most tense , the tempo would subsequently climb until all instruments were cut and the main verse of the song was spoken. We used that pattern to create nodes of compression on top of our topography.

Between each node were pathways to illustrate the whimsy of the rest of the song and the aimless wondering the songwriter displayed through the subject of the song as she debated speaking up at a wedding. The use of an acoustic guitar helped us develop what we want the pathways to feel like, airy but also directed to the next node.

Our work was developed in three major stages. The first being topography made from chipboard, “sticks” made of balsa wood, and 3d printed elements made with PLA filament. Our topography was created by using a mix of our finger prints and warped rings from a tree trunk. The different layers were put together with the idea of creating a base line path at 0’ so that we could start to think about a entry and exit point. In our top views we wanted to show how we intentionally spaced the sticks to become more abundant at the nodes to contribute to the compressed feeling. In our renders we wanted to show what the view in the nodes could be (top) and what the path would feel like (bottom).

I personally found the section cuts and model making to be the most help for me to really understand how we could make every part relate back to our song reasoning. The model at first is a lot to look at, it’s abrasive but as you take it in chunks it become easier to see how one could navigate the area. In a realistic application this could become a park going in step with the constant popularity Taylor Swift has in our pop culture. When we took the section cut it reminded me of sound waves which we used to justify the differing heights of our compression nodes.

The design of our 3d printed “Skylights” changed and developed to what we believed addresses our project goals most.

When it came time to print for the first timing using the 3d printers we opted to go with our original masses due to failed prints with our tilted ones. To adjust for this we designed to vary the heights of the covers. Our justification was to have each one become subsequently more compressive to go along with the impact the chorus has as it builds each time.

When my partner and I reflected on this project we both agreed we wanted to make the stick elements more dynamic and would continue to challenge ourselves creatively to what they could become. Overall we were encouraged by how it turned out because it was the first time we’d designed by writing our own project goal and using that to red line our own work. That process really helped us to stand firm in our design decisions and continue to work towards our deadlines.

That was one of the more challenging models I had made by hand at that point and really wanted to focus on craft while using materials completely new to us.

THROUGH THE GRAPEVINE

In Arch 1510 we studied movement of an object and through the semester turned it into a functional wall that could go in the Lee-Lowery courtyard on Clemson’s campus. My object was a wine bottle opener that had a handle that as it was moved up and down , moved on a track of “teeth” that caused that cork screw to twist in the same vertical motion. We explored what it meant to really see space in everything from the object we chose to the voids within the object.

Module 1

Module one focused on the movement of the wine opener. Our final part of the module was an hand drawing exercise that called for us to develop space out of the geometries from the movement diagrams. I decided to chose the orientation that would first go onto a bottle before the rest of the motion to complete the action is in affect.

Module 2 Solid and void space was anaylized during this module to find space in the object. The geometries that came from where the wine opener intersected with the vertical and horizontal planes helped to create complex extrusions that later got developed into the first iteration of the plaza “wall”.

Module 3 The wall was designed to be interactive. With the focus on creating a space that could relax students from the pressure of everyday life and provide a fun way to get to class. As the model progression (above) shows there was an intent for it to move similarly to how wine is made through pressing motions that start the process.

As the project developed the motion was limited to awnings that could extend to allow for outdoor study spaces. Similarly to the way the wine opener moved on gear teeth the stairs retract in a similar way to allow for a more mobile and flexible space.

The plan in site aimed to blend functionality and artistry seamlessly, elevating a currently empty space. The kinetic elements mimic the elegance and precision of a corkscrew’s spiral motion, allowing it to open and close in response to the changing daylight and seasons. Comprised of intricately designed metal segments, the wall gracefully unfolds like the unfurling of a corkscrew, casting enchanting shadows and filtering natural light into the courtyard throughout the day. The semester project was a testament to how everyday objects can inspire extraordinary architecture, turning the mundane into an aesthetic spectacle.
