A LETTER FROM CURT COLUMBUS,

DEAR FRIENDS,

Ever since a small but mighty group of Rhode Islanders transformed a small church on Broad Street into the first home of what would become the State Theater of Rhode Island, Trinity Rep has been about community. We are truly a homegrown theater — built by local artists and supporters, and sustained by local audiences and donors.

We create art that is visceral. Challenging. Poignant. Entertaining. You come to experience that art and to feel the connection that only live theater can offer with your fellow community members. In a state as small as Rhode Island, that connection is compounded: just ask any of our resident artistic company members who’ve been stopped at the store because someone remembered them from a show they were in years ago!

Granted, we’ve grown over the past 61 years from a scrappy upstart to a Tony Award-winning institution. Yet we still embody that same spirit through our educational programs, engagement events, and opportunities for everyone. One way to experience this rich community is as a Trinity Rep subscriber.

So why subscribe? Aside from deeply discounted tickets (more than 30%) to some of the most unforgettable theater in New England, you become part of something greater. Experience a curated arc of five productions: chosen, developed, and made live onstage in Providence, Rhode Island, at this specific moment just for you and your neighbors. Laugh at the rowdiest, most-relevant farce; hold back tears through the drama; and reflect on real-world stories before you onstage. Share the season with others, and feel the impact of art with your community.

Whether you choose to join us for the full season or a single show, we cannot wait to see you at the theater.

Best,

A farcical break from the inevitable political chaos

Many of us are dreading the 2024 election, regardless of political beliefs. Why not look your fears dead in the eye and laugh at them with POTUS? When a presidential PR nightmare evolves into a global catastrophe, it’s up to seven women in the commander-in-chief’s inner circle to do damage control. That is, if they don’t drive each other off the rails first through a chaotic cocktail of increasingly absurd antics. Delightfully raunchy and uproariously funny, POTUS is a naughty political farce that’ll have you rolling in the aisles!

Celebrating the holidays together

Everyone’s favorite curmudgeon, Ebenezer Scrooge, is back! The humbug’s wrenching, covetous, and cares more for money than all else. When the clock strikes midnight one fateful Christmas Eve, the ghost of Scrooge’s old pal Marley pays a much overdue visit. Through a supernatural journey, Scrooge must confront the past, acknowledge the present, and define the future for the good of the community – and Scrooge's very soul. A timeless holiday tale of redemption and joy, Trinity Rep’s reimagined production of A Christmas Carol has been a beloved New England family tradition for over 45 years.

November 23 – December 29, 2024

Trinity Rep is thrilled to partner with our neighbors at the Providence Performing Arts Center (PPAC), for this season’s production of A Christmas Carol. Our Chace Theater will be under much-needed construction for a full renovation and restoration. Our friends down the street welcomed us to their stage. It will be the story you know and love, in a space that will bring new magic and joy for the holidays.

Reflecting on the ripples of conflict

In 2006, Trinity Rep told the true, poignant stories of Rhode Islanders deployed in Iraq with the play Boots on the Ground. Nearly 20 years later, how does this legacy live on ... and what have we forgotten? Someone Will Remember Us interlaces the real-life testimonies of U.S. military veterans, Gold Star families, Iraqi civilians, and refugees living in Rhode Island. As military conflict wages on multiple fronts across the world, this production paints a moving portrait of the innumerable tolls of war and imperialism, and how we find connection through it all.

Decolonizing Shakespeare’s “brave new world”

Shakespeare’s familiar story of magic, betrayal, comedy, and love is told through a compelling mix of The Bard’s classic English, translated Spanish dialogue, and projected subtitles so you can understand it all. La Tempestad — The Tempest purposefully weaves two languages to deconstruct the colonialist narratives, all while retaining the shipwreck, romance, magic, and fantasy that make Shakespeare’s final play so beloved. Originally presented in 2018 as a touring Teatro en El Verano production, La Tempestad is the first to transfer to Trinity Rep’s main stage!

THEATER FOR ALL

• For patrons who are blind or visually impaired, Audio Descriptions of performances are available by request for certain performances with six weeks advance notice

• For Deaf or Hard of Hearing guests, try our in-house Assisted Listening Devices, or our Open-Captioned Performances, where supertitles are displayed during the show. American Sign Language interpretation is also available by request for certain performances with six weeks advance notice

• Sensory-Friendly Performances are excellent for those with sensitivities to light or sound, including audiences who are neurodivergent, with sensory processing disorders, PTSD, or epilepsy. Audiences receive early notice of a production’s loud sounds, intense lighting cues, and other possibly upsetting content. We do this through both a written Sensory-Friendly guide and real-time warning lantern before certain moments

• For A Christmas Carol, Sensory-Friendly performances are different. Instead of warnings for potentially triggering effects, the entire show is adapted to accommodate anyone with sensory needs, we call it Sensory-Friendly Plus!

• Trinity Rep Active Imagination Network (TRAIN) involves biannual theater productions showcasing students of all ages with cognitive disabilities. TRAIN empowers student actors, and the performances are open to the public!
