Leadership Public Schools (LPS) is a not-for-profit organization founded in 2002 to serve a diverse student body with a network of outstanding public charter high schools. LPS operates four public high schools in Richmond, Oakland, Hayward, and San Jose, serving about 1600 students directly.

OUR MISSION is to prepare traditionally underserved students to succeed in college and become leaders in their communities, and to develop replicable practices that can improve urban education.

She dedicated herself to meeting with students with consistently low grades, attendance issues, and behavioral concerns, making sure to touch base several times each week. Diaz showed them how to check their grades online, figure out what work they were missing, and strategize how to turn it in. She helped students talk with their teachers and mediated when there was conflict.

She even realized students were struggling because of more basic needs, like not eating lunch or not having a place to sleep at night.

Briana Hernandez, one of Ms. Diaz’ students, turned her freshman year around, going from all Ds and Fs to passing every course and an A in English. She was nominated for Student of the Month in the first weeks of her sophomore year. ”I owe it to my ally,” she says, “she is like my second mother, and I am so grateful for her help.”

LPS + RICHMOND LPS prides itself on empowering its staff and students to design and innovate, to experiment, test, and share what works. Last year, LPS received halfmillion-dollar grants from the Schwab and Hewlett Foundations to collaborate with ed-tech non-profit Gooru and support this culture of innovation. Gooru engineers and LPS teachers worked tirelessly to transform Learning Lists, a prototype developed at LPS, into a powerful learning navigator now in use across the country. The LPS-Gooru Learning Navigator empowers students to direct their own learning and supports teachers in tailoring their courses for individual students' needs.

Yamiley Corona was one of Sophia Thomas’ students last year, during the pilot year of Learning Lists.

As a 9th grader, Yamiley was excited about math but shy, quiet, and did not have great academic preparation in middle school. She comments, “Learning Lists taught me to be organized, re-read, and self-pace…I feel more confident as a student now. The skills I learned in Ac Num are ones that I am using now as a 10th grader in other classes, not just math. But math is still my favorite subject!”

LPS + OAKLAND Three years ago, the LPS English departments foresaw big changes on the horizon and embraced a more rigorous curriculum emphasizing critical thinking and analytical writing. They wanted to better prepare students for success in college and equip them with skills the Common Core would emphasize. It wasn't always an easy transition, as Oakland department head Amy McGeorge noted in conversation with her students Angel, Diana, and Karen. But the results are impressive — more than

Her students thrive with these expectations. Says Diana, “It’s so much work, more than I’ve ever done in my life. I feel like I wrote a book in my junior year and now I’m doing even more. But Ms. McGeorge pushes us to do our best. She is strict but she makes us learn. It is really beneficial, and I know I’m going to be ready for college.”

McGeorge adds, “I really like my students. They bring me life. I believe in them, I love them, and I will do anything to help achieve their best.”

LPS + HAYWARD Team NBA stands for Nothing But Academics, the peer-tutoring initiative that motivates LPS Hayward students to hold themselves to high academic standards. Team NBA is different from more traditional after-school tutoring in because it is led entirely by students — by Director Krystina Williamson (a senior at LPS Hayward) and Co-Director Johanna Vangalen (a junior). Kryssi and Johanna oversee a group of peer-tutor coordinators as well as a much larger number of peer-tutors. They estimate that every single student at LPS Hayward has received assistance from the peer-tutoring program.

Founded in 2013, the program grew in the last year to more than 50 tutors and 12 coordinators.

Tutors use their flex, or free, periods to push in to classrooms where students need help or to pull out students to work one-on-one on specific assignments. Kryssi uses the school’s master schedule to coordinate tutoring sessions and match tutors based on availability and expertise, and she and Johanna coordinate weekly tutor trainings based on teacher professional development materials.

This extra work is a labor of love. Kryssi comments, “I am an educator at heart. I want to be a teacher because I think it’s something I’m good at and that I care about. I am good at learning and translating information. Also, something feels wrong with our education system and I want to change that. I want to improve education in our country.”
