Wickford Rotary Club – Fun, Fellowship and Fundraising!
Wickford Rotary Club has been at the heart of Wickford’s life for more than 60 years, bringing together like-minded folk with a focus on supporting the community, both locally and internationally, through social projects and charitable fundraising. What would you like to do for the community?
Rotary is an international organisation which has been around since 1905, and has a world-wide membership of more than 1.4 million people, supporting their local communities and providing service and support to people around the world. Among many achievements on an international scale Rotary is responsible for the eradication of Polio around the world in all but two countries, and we’re still working on it. Here in Wickford, Rotary has since 1958 raised funds for many local charities and provided much needed funds to help them achieve the aims. We were instrumental in funding St Luke’s Hospice in its early days and to this day regularly raise funds for equipment needed by the Hospice. During the COVID pandemic we supported the vaccination program by putting people on the ground to help with logistics at the vaccination Centre.

In addition we support the local food banks, the Essex Air Ambulance, Cancer Research and in the past year have supported humanitarian needs in Pakistan, Turkey, Syria, as well as providing funding to support the people of Ukraine, donating almost £110,00 to a total of more than 30 charities in the past five years.
But it’s not all just about raising money. We aim to create fellowship with a purpose amongst our members by developing the projects to serve society. You’re probably most familiar with our visits to the streets of Wickford at Christmas time with Santa and his sleigh, but you may not know about our collaboration with Hyde Hall for a live music festival in the summer, and our quiz on the first Tuesday of the month which raises some funds and gives people a good time. Does that sound interesting to you?
We meet each week on Wednesday evenings at The Railway Club at which we have interesting speakers, and plan our various activities during the year, and we get together for social activities as varied as sailing, meals out and horseracing!
