Wickford Rotary Club – Fun, Fellowship and Fundraising!

Wickford Rotary Club has been at the heart of Wickford’s life for more than 60 years, bringing together like-minded folk with a focus on supporting the community, both locally and internationally, through social projects and charitable fundraising. What would you like to do for the community?

Rotary is an international organisation which has been around since 1905, and has a world-wide membership of more than 1.4 million people, supporting their local communities and providing service and support to people around the world. Among many achievements on an international scale Rotary is responsible for the eradication of Polio around the world in all but two countries, and we’re still working on it. Here in Wickford, Rotary has since 1958 raised funds for many local charities and provided much needed funds to help them achieve the aims. We were instrumental in funding St Luke’s Hospice in its early days and to this day regularly raise funds for equipment needed by the Hospice. During the COVID pandemic we supported the vaccination program by putting people on the ground to help with logistics at the vaccination Centre.

Wickford

In addition we support the local food banks, the Essex Air Ambulance, Cancer Research and in the past year have supported humanitarian needs in Pakistan, Turkey, Syria, as well as providing funding to support the people of Ukraine, donating almost £110,00 to a total of more than 30 charities in the past five years.

But it’s not all just about raising money. We aim to create fellowship with a purpose amongst our members by developing the projects to serve society. You’re probably most familiar with our visits to the streets of Wickford at Christmas time with Santa and his sleigh, but you may not know about our collaboration with Hyde Hall for a live music festival in the summer, and our quiz on the first Tuesday of the month which raises some funds and gives people a good time. Does that sound interesting to you?

We meet each week on Wednesday evenings at The Railway Club at which we have interesting speakers, and plan our various activities during the year, and we get together for social activities as varied as sailing, meals out and horseracing!

Hospital helps EastEnders legend raise skin cancer awareness with The One Show film

On 31st July, BBC’s The One Show (BBC One, weekdays, 7pm) featured actress Michelle Collins visiting dermatologists at Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust to see how they are helping spot skin cancer more quickly by using teledermatology.

Staff use a specialist magnification camera, used with a smart phone or tablet, to help diagnose patients and get them to the right care pathways sooner.

Filming as part of the piece for BBC One’s The One Show, the film focussed on sun safety and spotting the signs of skin cancer, with Michelle visiting staff at the dermatology unit at Basildon Hospital.

She saw for herself how tele-dermatology is being rolled out into the community and means moles, marks, or lumps can be checked for cancer, with results interpreted faster.

Anika Khan, a Consultant Dermatologist at the Trust who appears in the film, said:

“These devices can confirm or help us rule out cancer in just 48 hours, speeding up patient care, giving peace of mind to many who seek help for their moles or marks. It also allows us to see others, who may have cancer, much quicker, allowing them to start their cancer pathway and treatment sooner.

“It was lovely meeting Michelle, who took a genuine interest in the department, our staff, and what this device can do. Hopefully this film can help put what we do and how we can help people on the map, if it just encourages one viewer to get checked out then it has been worth it.”

Awareness raising about skin cancer, which is on the rise in the UK, is close to Michelle’s heart as the Cindy Beale actress’ mum sadly died from terminal skin cancer two years ago.

Michelle said: “Prevention is better than cure and learning more about the amazing work dermatology staff at Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust do has been fascinating. Hopefully this film can help reiterate and educate people about the dangers of harmful UV rays.”

The short film saw Collins speaking to a dermatologist about the dangers of not covering up or not wearing sun protection.

Expressions of interest open for £7.5m public health grant programme

Expressions of interest are now open for our new £7.5 million public health grant programme.

The Public Health Accelerator Bids (PHAB) programme offers funding across two grant streams. These are:

• small grants under £15,000

• major grants over £15,000

Expressions of interest for the major grants opened Tuesday 1st August. The deadline for the first round of expressions of interest is 5pm on Friday 25th August. If their expression of interest is successful, bidders can submit an application form.

We have also launched a new website for the programme. The website brings together information on the programme. It includes the full guidance and expression of interest forms. We will continue to update it with further details as they become available.

The PHAB programme will support the new Essex Wellbeing, Public Health and Communities Business Plan. Grants are

available to voluntary organisations, charities, NHS bodies, schools, councils and more.

Councillor John Spence, Essex County Council Cabinet Member for Health, Adult Social Care and ICS Integration, said:

“This ambitious programme will fund a range of innovative public health projects across Essex, supporting our aim to address the wider determinants of health in the communities where this is needed most.

“We’re excited to see the benefits projects will bring to residents and I would urge organisations to take a look at the website where they can learn more about the funding criteria and the process of submitting a bid.

“Applications for the small grants and first round of the major grant will open on Monday 4th September. At the beginning of November we will award the first grants. They can fund projects for up to two years.”

Popular market finds new home in Wickford

Wickford Market has relocated to a secure location on Woodlands Road, following remedial works organised by Basildon Council.

Despite the council supporting a permanent High Street closure for the market on Saturdays for some time, objections by the bus companies have meant the temporary Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) cannot be made permanent. Recognising the importance of the market to traders and residents in Wickford, the council identified a new location on Woodlands Road to allow the market to continue to operate.

The site required some maintenance to make it more accessible for customers and traders. Site clearance has been carried out by the council and ground works have been carried out to level and resurface the site. Existing hoarding has been removed and new fencing has been installed to properly frame and secure the site for the market.

Anti-social behaviour falls by more than 30%

Incidents of anti-social behaviour (ASB) in Essex have dropped by 31.3% in the past year, with 8,562 fewer offences recorded.

Community policing teams across the county have been working closely with councils and local partners to combat issues including nuisance vehicles, street drinking, disruptive and intimidating behaviour, and the reckless riding of bikes and e-scooters.

There were 18,771 ASB offences recorded in the year to the end of May 2023. This compares to 27,333 ASB offences over the same period 12 months earlier.

In the same timeframe in 2017-18, there were 49,444 ASB incidents recorded. The most recent figures represent a 62% drop from this level.

Deputy Chief Constable Andy Prophet, who is also the NPCC lead for anti-social behaviour, said:

Wickford Market operated from the refreshed Woodlands Road site on 29th July and will continue to operate there while a more permanent solution is identified.

Councillor Craig Rimmer, Cabinet Member for Economic Stimulus and Tourism, welcomed the news: “We are absolutely committed to ensuring Wickford Market continues to operate. It’s a huge part of the town’s history and I am really grateful to Wickford residents and the market traders for their patience while works were being completed on the Woodlands Road site.

“Teams have done a fantastic job clearing, resurfacing and securing the site to make it accessible for traders and shoppers. I encourage everyone to visit the market in its new home this weekend.”

Wickford Market operates Fridays and Saturdays from 8am to 4pm.

“From high streets to seafronts, transport hubs to parks and local housing estates –ASB is not something we should see as ‘low level’ or acceptable. It is not, it ruins lives and blights communities.

“The significant reduction in anti-social behaviour offences across Essex shows the work we are doing alongside our partners is having an impact.

“People have a right to live free from intimidation and harassment in their own communities. ASB is not a low-level offence and can have a great impact on someone’s quality of life.

“The public should continue reporting incidents to us. Policing is one part of the solution but where it is not a policing matter, we will work with local authorities and other agencies to effectively combat ASB and the underlying causes.”

NHS launches

new

programme to help residents to lose weight and stay healthy

Local residents are set to benefit from the launch of a new 12-week self-referral programme that is free and easy to access and is designed to help them manage their weight and improve their health.

The Mid and South Essex Integrated Care Board (MSE ICB) has prioritised tackling obesity as a key factor in looking to improve the long-term health conditions of local people.

65% of adults in mid and south Essex have obesity or excess weight, which is higher than that of both East of England and England. The 12 week programme is launching initially in Thurrock where rates of adult obesity are the highest in mid and south Essex at 69.4%.

“We know that some groups and communities are more likely to be facing higher risks of ill health due to obesity, particularly younger adults in our black, Asian and ethnic communities.

“This new programme will offer a range of benefits, such as dietary advice, physical activity guidance and support to help them achieve a healthier lifestyle.

“As part of this work we hope to better understand the barriers to accessing existing support so that we can tailor future care and support.”

Dr Peter Scolding, Assistant Medical Director at Mid and South Essex Integrated Care System.

To access the programme, participants must meet the following criteria:

• Age 18 or over.

• A BMI (Body Mass Index) greater than 30. The BMI threshold will be lowered to 27.5 for people from black, Asian, and ethnic minority backgrounds, who are at an increased risk of conditions such as Type 2 diabetes at a lower BMI.

It is easy for residents who meet the criteria to sign up, via public.wmp.nhs.uk

Have your say on cycling and walking networks

LCWIPs help create coherent cycling and walking networks. They will support us to achieve the vision of a safer, greener, and healthier county.

The consultation explores routes in Braintree, Brentwood, Chelmsford and Colchester. It will run for eight weeks until Friday 29th September.

Councillor Lee Scott, Essex County Council Cabinet Member for Highways Maintenance and Sustainable Transport, said:

“One of the aims of our Safer Greener Healthier campaign is to encourage local residents to rethink the way they travel where possible, especially for shorter journeys.

LCWIPs are a significant step towards achieving this. By developing these cycling and walking networks, we can prioritise how to invest in our streets so that they become healthier places, are more accessible and have better air quality. They will also become safer for those who choose to walk or cycle leading to everyone having more travel independence.

“Braintree, Brentwood, Chelmsford and Colchester are all experiencing significant growth pressures and therefore prioritising the development of good and safe walking and cycling networks is paramount.” Take part in the consultation and find out more at consultations.essex.gov.uk/ sustainable-travel-planning-team/localcycling-and-walking-infrastructure-planslcw

Consultations for other parts of Essex will follow in the autumn and new year.

Residents are being invited to take part in a survey on walking and cycling networks. It asks residents their views on the development of Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plans (LCWIPs). The routes will guide and inform the future direction of our active travel strategy.

Unlike traditional mortgages or personal loans, equity release plans typically do not require monthly repayments. Instead, the loan, including any interest accrued, is repaid when the homeowner passes away or moves into long-term care. This can alleviate financial stress and provide peace of mind, knowing that you can enjoy your retirement without the burden of ongoing repayments.

Flexibility to Choose:

Equity release plans offer flexibility in tailoring the release of funds to suit your specific needs. You have the freedom to take a lump sum, regular payments, or a combination of both, depending on your financial goals.

Staying in Your Home:

Equity release allows you to remain in your cherished home while unlocking its potential. You continue to live rent-free, enjoying the familiar surroundings and cherished memories you’ve built over the years; making the most of your property’s value without the need to downsize or sell.

Inheritance Protection:

Many equity release plans offer an inheritance protection feature, enabling you to ringfence a portion of your property’s value as an inheritance for your loved ones. This means you can still leave behind an inheritance while accessing the funds you need to enjoy your retirement. It’s a win-win situation that provides financial security for both you and your family.

Expert Guidance and Regulation:

To ensure the safety and well-being of homeowners, equity release is regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). This regulatory oversight provides consumer protection, ensuring that equity release providers adhere to strict guidelines and operate with transparency and fairness. These products are not suitable for all house owners. Moreover, different products can offer very different benefits and costs. It is very important, therefore, that you obtain advice from an experienced product advisor and a specialist solicitor. Disclaimer:

Baby Safety Month

September is Baby Safety Month, and we know that parents and caregivers play a vital role in protecting their babies from any harm, big or small.

Most injuries can be prevented with the proper care and attention before the accident happens.

This event, which is sponsored by the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association (JMPA), started in 1983 and has been helping parents protect their children every year since.

The focus of this year’s Baby Safety Month, as well as the normal tips and tricks, is on increasing consumer awareness of safety issues and the safe selection and use of baby products.

Baby proofing, where do you start?

• Start where all babies start, crawling. Spend some time on your hands and knees and make your way through your home taking note of anything you bang parts of your body on and anything potentially hazardous sticking out. Remove or move anything that you come in contact with.

• Be aware of open electrical sockets, these can be hidden by cheap plug covers, also, be aware of anything that can be pulled down, e.g. hand towels with items on top.

• Babies are really curious, lifting, opening and closing anything they can get their hands onto. Baby proof cupboards, drawers, lids, anything that could open or close, or potentially catch themselves with. Ensure all loose rugs and carpets are taped down to avoid anyone tripping over them.

• Be careful when using second-hand products as some of these will not meet the safety standards of today so can pose a potential threat to babies and toddlers. The safest option is to use newer products that meet current safety standards.

Watch out for:

• Anything that can be tipped over, such as a TV or furniture, more specifically, lights and anything similar with a wire attached. Anything with a chord or wire could pose a potential choking hazard, so ensure all of these are tied up and away from reach

• Magnets, especially smaller ones, are easily swallowed by children and once inside a child’s body they can connect to each other and cause serious internal damage.

• Button batteries can be just as easily swallowed as magnets and get stuck in the throat and cause choking as well as making it difficult to swallow. Swallowing batteries can cause serious harm so to err on the side of safety, visit an emergency room immediately.

• Washing tablets, there’s a good chance babies and young children will figure out what these are using their senses, touch, smell and eventually taste. Ensure these are kept in a child-proof container and out of reach for kids at all times.

Choosing the right product and using it right the way:

When buying a stroller, ensure the base is wide enough and use the undercarriage rather than hanging shopping bags on the handles. Only use slings and carriers when walking, never running or cycling.

If you’re buying a changing table, ensure you measure the area available before leaving to ensure you choose the right product. When changing your baby, always keep one hand on the baby and use the restraints available.

It is essential that any car seat you use is appropriate for your child’s age, always ensure you remove coats and jackets before putting them in the car seat as this can cause the seatbelt to not be tight enough, if they are cold cover them with a blanket.

If you would like to find out more about Baby Safety Month and how to fully baby-proof your life, not just your home, then go and visit www.jpma.org/page/baby_safety_zone

New firefighters welcomed into fire service

Essex County Fire and Rescue Service has welcomed 17 new firefighters during a passing out ceremony at the Service Training Centre in Witham on 28th July.

The new recruits will be heading to Basildon, Chelmsford, Grays, Harlow, Leigh, Loughton, Orsett and Southend fire stations.

The ceremony was attended by Chief Fire Officer / Chief Executive Rick Hylton and Roger Hirst, Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner for Essex. Proud family, friends and colleagues looked on in the crowd and the ceremony was live streamed for those who couldn’t make it in person.

The Service’s new recruits were welcomed into the Service during a passing out ceremony where they performed two drills to show off their training in dealing with a house fire as well as a road traffic collision and were then welcomed into the Fire Service by Chief Fire Officer / Chief Executive Rick Hylton. He commented on the event: “This is one of my favourite events of the year. A chance to welcome my new colleagues to Essex County Fire and Rescue Service. Congratulations, not only on the exemplary skills you’ve just shown us. But because I know that to be on that line

today has taken hard work, determination and commitment. It’s rightly a very, very proud moment for you.

“You’ve beat off competition from thousands to be here and you’re here because you were chosen. You were chosen because we believe that you’ve got the right skills, the right abilities and the right behaviours to take this service forward to improve it, and to provide the best service that we can to the people of Essex.

“It’s my view that being a member of the fire and rescue service is without a doubt the best job in the world. It’s a job that has served me well for 26 years and it’s a job I can honestly say every day I get out of bed and I look forward to going to work.

“I’m really looking forward to working with you all. You’re part of the team now and we’re really fortunate to have you.”

Roger Hirst, Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner for Essex said:

It’s a privilege to be here to thank you on behalf of the communities of Essex.

“I strongly commend you for stepping forward to serve the public in the way you have done. I wish you every success, lots of safe deployments and that you enjoy your careers with Essex County Fire and Rescue Service.”

The firefighters have been put through their paces over the last 17 weeks as they learned the practical and technical skills needed to meet the demands of a modern-day firefighter.

How animals are changing lives in Essex

Horses, dogs, goats and many other animals are all playing their part in projects to improve and enhance the health and well-being of people in Essex.

Whether it is a wheelchair user feeling freedom through horse riding, a donkey visiting people in hospice care, someone in a care home cuddling a greyhound or a teenager with anxiety building confidence by working with creatures great and small, there is no doubt about the therapeutic power of being with animals.

Spending time with any animal can help reduce feelings of loneliness and stress, overcome trauma and make a positive difference to mental health. Animals provide comfort and distraction to those who may be feeling low and can also be a benefit to anyone with social barriers, including people with learning disabilities or autism.

Essex Community Foundation (ECF), the independent charitable trust which distributes around £4.5 million in grants to local charities each year, has supported a wide range of voluntary organisations with projects that utilise animals to improve the lives of local people.

Ace Hounds, in Uttlesford, was set up and is run by a small and dedicated team. They take retired racing greyhounds into care homes for elderly people and spend time with those who feel lonely or isolated.

The project was temporarily paused during the COVID-19 pandemic but was able to restart thanks to a grant from ECF of £5,000.

Susan Phillips, a volunteer at Ace Hounds, said:

“We help lots of different groups and take the greyhounds to see people who are elderly, have dementia, learning difficulties or mental health challenges. We have also started working in schools, to help young people gain self-confidence.

“The use of animals, especially dogs, has been proven to be therapeutic for people who are lonely or anxious and we’ve had feedback which shows that people leave our sessions feeling happier and more motivated.”

Barrow Farm Riding for the Disabled provides riding and carriage driving to 120 disabled children and adults every week. The charity is a purpose-built riding centre in rural Essex, between Chelmsford and Brentwood, making riding accessible for people who may otherwise be unable to learn.

Anne Mitchell, Trustee, whose family founded the charity, said:

“Spending time with horses and ponies is proven to help improve both mental and physical health and well-being. For many of our participants the time spent at Barrow Farm may be the only exercise, and time spent in a countryside environment that they get. For them, learning a new skill builds confidence and self-esteem and the chance to make new friends. I see the benefits every day from the smiles on their faces and from the pride of their parents watching their riders achieve.”

32

One parent said:

“Riding at Barrow Farm has increased my son’s core strength, his balance and his coordination. It has also helped hugely his social and emotional well-being. It has been a real game changer, not only for him but for our whole family.”

The charity has been able to employ a part-time riding coach, thanks to a grant of £6,000 from ECF.

Wellies-On runs a 40-acre working care farm based in Abberton, near Colchester. For the last 18 years the farm has been a haven for a range of people from different backgrounds and age groups, including those with learning disabilities and mental health needs.

The charity’s therapeutic service enables people to care for the land and the environment and work with animals on their farm.

Ellie Goff, CEO of Wellies-On, said:

“Time spent in a farm environment allows people to grow in self-awareness, resilience and confidence, not just in physical tasks, but also in social interaction and life skills.

“People typically feel better about themselves when they are taking care of others and the same is true when caring for animals. We have goats, chickens, sheep, ducks and pigs to name but a few, and it’s a joy to see people of all ages connect with them.”

Wellies-On received a £10,000 grant from ECF to employ a part-time mental health worker, to give specialist support to children and adults on site at the farm.

St Helena Hospice helps families to make the most of the time they have together in a compassionate and caring environment. One of their patients has always enjoyed visits to the seaside so they brought the beach to them, complete with sand, pie and mash from their favourite shop in Walton, and even a rescue donkey called Sam from Riffhams Donkeys. Sam the donkey then had a wander around the Hospice visiting everyone and lifting spirits.

In 2022, we supported the Hospice to expand the capacity of their free bereavement service supporting people in north east Essex. Research shows that:

• Spending time with animals increases levels of serotonin and dopamine, promoting calm and relaxation

• Owners of pets are less likely to have depression

• Pets improve the quantity and quality of socialisation, providing conversation points

• Hugging and stroking an animal provides almost immediate relief from stress and anxiety

Why should you think about joining the Scouts?

With the summer coming up and the days about to get hotter, it’s a great time to think about joining the Scouts.

The Scouts believe in preparing our young people with the skills for life and provide opportunities you might not find elsewhere. They foster an environment that builds character, employability and practical skills they need in this world to succeed, and also encourage them to learn more and build upon this knowledge.

With a world overrun by social media and the internet, there’s no better time to ensure our kids get outdoors and experience what the world has to offer.

Every week, the Scouts help almost half a million people aged 4-25 develop these skills for life.

From activities, to badges, to nights away there is a constant stream of opportunities to get involved in.

It’s not only children and teenagers who can benefit from joining, with a wide range of volunteering avenues, adults can also gain invaluable experience from the Scouts.

Volunteers give up just a fraction of their own to support young people in their communities but also learn new skills, and gain self-confidence as well as pride and a sense of identity.

Not all volunteers deliver activities to young people, they can also work within the wider scope of Scouts, driving minibuses, cooking at camps, work on the chair or even on the accounts behind the scenes for example.

To find out more about you can get involved and find your local group within the Scouts, visit www.scouts.org.uk

Wickford Wildlife Society – September Meeting

The Wickford Wildlife Society will be visiting the RSPB West Canvey Marshes nature reserve on Sunday 17th September 2023.

The main aim will be to look for autumn migrating birds but most of our summer birds will still be around too, and butterflies plus dragonflies will still be on the wing, so there should be plenty of wildlife to see. We will be meeting in Wickford Central Car Park at 9.00am and there should be plenty of car space if you need a lift. If you are planning to travel direct to the reserve, please email us so we can look out for you when we arrive.

Wickford Wildlife Society – Indoor Meeting – Wednesday 18th October 2023

The next indoor meeting of the Wickford Wildlife Society will take place on Wednesday 18th October 2023 at St Andrew’s Church Hall, 11 London Road, Wickford, Essex, SS12 0AN.

Our guest speaker will be Daniel Bridge, who will be presenting his Wood photography talk. Danel is a full-time photography tutor, and his love of woodland prompted the writing of this talk, based around the plants and animals found within them, but also the wood itself, either in its natural state, or used as a building material.

This is an evening meeting, arrive at 7.45pm for an 8.00pm start. There will be a small entrance charge - £3.00 for non-members and £2.00 for members. There will be a break around 9.00pm when tea and coffee will be available.

A Guide to Litter Picking with Keep Britain Tidy

Thousands of volunteers across the UK are being supported to pick litter thanks to the #LitterHeroes programme delivered by Keep Britain Tidy.

The environmental charity recently launched a new registration scheme to support its national network of volunteer litter-pickers after recording around 6,000 volunteers on one social media group alone, showing the public’s growing appetite for taking action to protect our precious spaces from litter pollution. The environmental programme, made possible thanks to the support of players of People’s Postcode Lottery and its Earth Trust, empowers individuals and groups to keep their communities litter-free. New and existing volunteers can register for the scheme and will receive ongoing support, guidance and benefits when they do.

The charity defines a #LitterHero as “someone who is interested in actively volunteering their time to pick up litter, reduce waste, and improve the environment around them”. As well as blighting our streets, parks and beaches, litter harms wildlife, domestic pets and livestock, and costs us nearly £1 billion a year to clean up. This year alone so far, Keep Britain Tidy’s #LitterHeroes collected more than 400,000 bags of litter during the charity’s annual Great British Spring Clean campaign.

They are supported by 170 volunteer #LitterHeroes Ambassadors who help oversee their activities.

Registered #LitterHeroes benefit from the charity’s dedicated webpage and resources to help them with their litter-picking efforts, organise events and connect with other local #LitterHeroes. Registration gives them exclusive access to campaigns and content from fellow #LitterHeroes, access to the official downloadable Keep Britain Tidy #LitterHeroes logos for

social media, equipment, posters and a new quarterly newsletter. Volunteers who register will also have access to a dedicated staff member to respond to queries and give advice.

Litter-picking is a great opportunity for everyone – families, schools, communities, businesses – to get outside and do something that is good for the planet and good for them too. Taking eco action in the outdoors appears to be critical to the wellbeing of our communities, with significant benefits to people’s mental health. Keep Britain Tidy’s research with volunteers shows that people feel happier and less anxious after as a result of taking part in litter picking. In a survey of people who took part in the charity’s annual campaign, the Great British Spring Clean, 2021, 86% said volunteering helped improve their mood, up from up 79% in 2020. More than half (52%) agreed it helped them meet new people and make friends. And last year, 60% of children and young people told a survey they felt happier when they are doing an ‘eco-action’ like litter-picking outside.

Chief Executive of Keep Britain Tidy, Allison Ogden-Newton OBE, said:

“Our #LitterHeroes movement is a way for us to support - and recognise - all the hard work done by thousands of our volunteers up and down the country who work tirelessly to make their streets, parks and beaches clean and healthy spaces that everyone can enjoy.

“We’re delighted to be able to offer enhanced support and advice through the revamped registration scheme, and we’d be thrilled to welcome even more like-minded people into our #LitterHeroes family to help us continue our fight to keep Britain tidy.”

The Accidental Manager

There’s a layer beneath the surface of the Junior Football experience… Essex parents, authors and ‘accidental managers’ S Compton and M Jones unveil the dark side of the violence, intimidation and corruption on pitches up and down the country…

Written by ‘Accidental Managers’ and parents from Essex, Billericay’s Simon Compton and Wickford’s Mark Jones, the book peels back the veneers of ‘overenthusiastic’ support from the side lines and the systems in place to present a stark and honest look at the environment at leagues up and down the country. It highlights the positives of how rewarding it can be to help children develop and improve, while shining a spotlight on the aspects that many would prefer to ignore.

About The Accidental Manager: The Uncomfortable Truth About Junior Football What really happens at junior football, away from the nice positive messages and sound bites from the clubs and leagues about equality, respect and fair play? What is the

harsh reality of managing a junior football team, and what actually happens each Sunday around the football pitches up and down the country, whilst the children play? This book delves into real-life, first-hand accounts looking into the reality for the parents, the players, the clubs, the leagues and the officials.

The violence, intimidation, cheating, players being tapped up, politics and corruption.

‘“Mate can you do me a favour and come back to mine; he’s following me home.” We are now behind ‘Thug Dad’, but he had not spotted us. We pull up to some lights. Our parent is at the front, Thug Dad is behind him, followed by me. The boot pops open and out gets the dad. He walks to the back of his car where he has a set of golf clubs in the boot; he reaches to grab one of the clubs…’

This is the very uncomfortable truth about Junior Football.

S Compton and M Jones are everyday guys from Essex who fell into managing football teams for their sons (and friends) for many years, from children to young adults. Sharing their own love of football, they wanted to give their children the opportunity to play the beautiful game, and to improve and develop both off and on the pitch.

We have been involved in junior football for many years and have witnessed firsthand, appalling behaviour from adults which would not be allowed anywhere else in society – let alone a place for children,” say Compton and Jones.

“We were both part of the problem; accepted it as the norm as it has always been that way. On reflection we can see how wrong much of it is, and we want to raise awareness of the reality of junior football to the wider public so that changes can be made to protect children’s welfare, ensuring that future generations are able to enjoy the beautiful game. We also wanted to write about the fantastic side of junior football, the great experiences in working with children and helping them develop and improve.”

The Accidental Manager was released on 28th May and is available across all good book stores priced at £9.99.

What clubs can my children join?

With the school year at its end and the buds of new the school year starting to bloom, we thought it would be a great idea to share some clubs your kids might be interested in joining this September.

It’s not only important for kids to get as much exercise as possible, aiding with both their physical and mental health, it’s a great building block for learning important communication skills and building friendships along the way.

Of course you have the much-loved football clubs, rugby clubs, netball clubs and volleyball clubs, but there are also some out there that are not purely sport based, but just as much fun to be involved in.

Have you thought about coding clubs?

Coding Clubs are all about fun and creative computer programming for children. Kids can learn the basics of computer programming from people who are knowledgeable in STEM subjects. From creating animations to working games, learning new skills in the process, it’s a great way to introduce them to valuable knowledge for the future.

How about music and drama clubs?

Chess is one of the oldest games that we still play, dating back to over 1,500 years ago and there’s a reason it’s stuck around. From the countless techniques and skills learnt through the simple game of chess, it’s one of the most enjoyable games to learn; it can also help cognitive skills like memory, planning, and problem-solving.

Sports Clubs

There are a lot of talented musicians, singers and performers out there, and you need the right environment and teachers to thrive. If your child is showing a lot of talent or interest in music or drama, then why not introduce them to local music, singing and drama clubs? A lot of schools have after school lessons and music programmes that will be a huge benefit to their progression in music, from singing, to playing, production techniques and starring in shows.

As mentioned earlier, you have plenty of football, rugby, netball and volleyball clubs to choose from; which are all amazingly fun and a joy to take part in. There are also basketball clubs, hockey clubs, gymnastics clubs, ice-hockey clubs, roller-skating and skateboarding clubs, swimming clubs and cricket clubs to sign up to.

Many schools will have these clubs you can sign up to, but a quick Google or Facebook search will allow you to narrow down your closest and enable you to find out more.

Make the right moves in Chess Club.
