Calm Harm

Helping you break the cycle of self-harm behaviour.

Calm Harm is an award-winning free app funded by teenage mental health charity stem4 that helps you manage or resist the urge to self-harm.

The app helps you learn to ride the wave by choosing from the following activities; Comfort, Distract, Express Yourself, Release and Random.

Helping you stay in the moment and be mindful, there is also a breathing exercise on the app to help regulate different emotions and reduce tension.

Zoe Peters is the Senior Communications Coordinator for stem4 and we spoke to Zoe to find out more about this amazing app…

For readers who may not know, can you explain what the Calm Harm app is?

Calm Harm is an award-winning app developed for teenage mental health charity stem4 by Clinical Psychologist Dr. Nihara Krause, in collaboration with young people, to help manage the urge to self-harm. It uses principles from an evidence-based psychological treatment called Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT).

Where did the idea come from to create this app?

A combination of clinical need and requests from young people the charity worked with.

How does your app help people and what has the feedback been like from those who have benefitted from using it?

The Calm Harm app provides some immediate activities and techniques to help break the cycle of self-harm behaviour and explore underlying trigger factors; the app supports in building a ‘safety net’ of helpful thoughts, behaviours, and access to supportive people, as well as providing the

opportunity to journal and self-reflect. The Calm Harm app also signposts to help.

Feedback:

“This app helps me so much. I can’t thank you enough for improving my life.”

“Honestly I would rate this 5 stars. This app really calmed me down when I want to do self-harm. Whenever I’m feeling down or want to do self-harm, I use this app to comfort me. This app has comforted me for a very long time & I love it. I’m grateful I have found this app.”

“I wanna hug the creator of this app; this app makes me really, really comfortable and it helped me very much. I want to thank the creator very much.”

The app is private, anonymous, and safe.

You recently just hit 4 million downloads, how rewarding a feeling is it knowing you are helping so many people through your app?

As a small charity with a mission to support the mental health of young people so they can lead healthy and happy lives, we are honoured to be contributing to supporting people across the world in such a positive way. It has also supported us to develop four other apps that support young people’s mental health, once again, using safe, evidence-based psychological treatment models for a variety of other commonly occurring conditions such as anxiety, low mood, body image and eating related difficulties and for those supporting young people.

Do you have any future visions of further plans you would like to do with the app?

Continue to listen to the feedback from our many users and adapt accordingly. We would like to extend use of the app to many NHS and educational settings.

Essex & Herts Air Ambulance

Your local life-saving charity.

Did you know that your local air ambulance service is a charity, relying on donations?

You might think that the helicopters of Essex & Herts Air Ambulance (EHAAT) often seen flying overhead, are part of the NHS. But this free life-saving service provided 24/7 by helicopters and rapid response vehicles (RRVs) receives limited government funding and no National Lottery grants.

It is thanks to local people and businesses across Essex and Hertfordshire raising funds for EHAAT that the charity can provide its vital medical emergency service.

Last year, their critical care team treated just over 1,900 patients, operating from two airbases in Earls Colne and North Weald.

Each critical care team consists of a pre-hospital care doctor, a critical care paramedic plus a pilot and co-pilot who rush their clinical colleagues to the scene of medical emergencies within minutes, carrying life-saving equipment to

deliver advanced clinical care. Usually, this equipment is only available in the hospital emergency department. Thanks to EHAAT and local people’s generosity, patients have received life-saving transfusions from the blood reserves carried on board the helicopters and RRVs.

Many volunteers lend a helping hand to support the charity, all playing an important part. Jane Morton, EHAAT Volunteer Manager says their time is hugely valued by the charity. She explains: “The core of our operations extends beyond our fleet of helicopters and advanced medical interventions, it’s the spirit of our supporters and volunteers that drive us forward.

“From helping in our charity shops to sorting treasures in our warehouses, picking up collection tins, giving engaging visitor centre tours and supporting events, every hour of volunteering makes a meaningful difference. Yet, it’s more than the tasks at hand – it’s about making connections and lasting friendships. Whether it’s sharing experiences, learning new skills, or stepping in to support community events, our volunteers not only impact our operations as a charity but inspire others and create positive change across our local communities.”

If you’re looking to give your time to help your local life-saving charity in the most meaningful way, please visit ehaat.org/volunteer

Get started with home composting in Essex

Composting is a natural process that turns your food and garden waste into soil improver for your garden.

By composting at home, you can reduce the amount of waste needed to be processed elsewhere. In Essex, food and garden waste makes up 25% of the general waste we throw away.

To help Essex residents get started with home composting, you can purchase a subsidised compost bin for your garden. You can also try the Love Essex free online course – find out all about the benefits of composting at home and how to get started.

Great

reasons to compost at home

After purchasing a compost bin, there is no other expense. In fact, over time, composting will save you money. Compost your food waste such as fruit and vegetable peelings, with your garden waste. You will create a free soil improver that you can use on your garden. This will also reduce your carbon emissions, as there is no need to transport and process this waste. It doesn’t even take long to see the results. Your soil improver should be ready in just 9 to 12 months.

By composting at home, you will be creating a great environment for insects such as worms and beetles. They will work hard digesting your food and garden waste into valuable soil improver. By encouraging insects, you may also encourage other wildlife such as garden birds, hedgehogs and maybe even slow-worms.

Not only is home composting a great activity for your garden, but a great excuse to spend more time outside. It’s fun for the whole family and the perfect introduction for children to learn about nature and wildlife.

Try composting at home

To help Essex residents get started with home composting, Love Essex offer subsidised compost bins.

To purchase a subsidised compost bin:

• You must live in statutory Essex (which doesn’t include Southend and Thurrock)

• Have the compost bin delivered to your Essex address

• Choose between either a 220l or 330l sized compost bin

• You can purchase two of the same size compost bins and get a further 50% off the price of the second bin

The compost bins are made from recycled plastic and require no set-up. All you need to do is head to www.getcomposting.com, enter your Essex postcode and your discount will be automatically applied.

However, if a compost bin is not for you, you can always build your own compost heap from materials that you have lying around.

Dementia Action Week was the 13th to 19th May

Rotary Club of Ingatestone used an empty shop (La Pomme) to highlight Dementia Action Week.

Ingatestone Rotary were delighted when Brownbread [previously La Pomme] agreed to our displaying information in their windows during “Dementia Action Week”. As a ‘Dementia Friendly’ Accredited group, in common with IFJS & IFPC, the club were pleased to promote Dementia Awareness.

The highlight was the window of artwork provided by the pupils from Ingatestone & Fryerning C of E Junior School (IFJS). Under the guidance of teacher Catherine Malby, around 30 posters were displayed - many were extremely artistic and thoughtful.

There were also posters highlighting the work of local support groups - Fundangles and Forget-Me-Not Activity Club. There was also a PC monitor with a slideshow of information from The Alzheimer’s Society. Knitted woollen Forget-me-Nots, provided by Fundangles, were hung in the windows.

Another monitor showed slides of Ingatestone Rotary ‘in action’. The show also appealed for help with local events, as without some new members, the club will not be able to run those fundraising events in support of this community. If you’d like more information about joining us, please check out

Healthwatch Essex is delighted to announce the launch of our latest project, where we will be exploring the experiences of people across the county accessing specialist health services for those with learning disabilities. We would love to hear from anyone who has, or is currently, accessing any of these services, as well as carers and loved ones who also have feedback to share. Full details of the ways you can get involved are on the webpage, including a link to the survey.

When is a phone box not a phone box? When it’s a Little

Library!

Opened in June Ingatestone’s historic phone box has now been taken over by the Parish Council, refurbished and has become the little library. It offers a swapping place for books, DVDs, leaflets etc. Whilst being preserved as a part of Ingatestone’s history.

Already it displays an eclectic range of books, from ‘Guten Tag, Mr Churchill’, ‘The Streets of Laredo’ by Larry McMurty, Maeve Binchy’s ‘Echos’, Charles Dickens, to Robert Graves’s ‘Count Belisarius’ and many more at the time of photographing. Why not bring a book or two that you’ve read and swap it for one of these?

Essex SEND improvements

Essex County Council are making further changes to improve the assessment process for Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCP) in Essex. This will help to reduce the average time

it takes to issue a plan and address the current backlog of assessments. It will also mean the process is more efficient, family-focused and collaborative.

The changes that the council will be making include:

• recruiting more agency Educational Psychologists (EP) to work on the outstanding assessment requests

• sharing EP advice with families and settings as soon as it is available, instead of waiting to share it as part of the draft EHCP

• maximising EP’s time, considering when and how they assess children

• preparing a draft EHCP more quickly, without also needing a needs assessment report

• replacing the outcomes meeting with a Proposed Plan Meeting (PPM) for families to discuss the draft EHCP and suggest changes to the plan

• ensuring all families are offered a Way Forward meeting if the decision is made not to assess a child or young person

• adding information to the Local Offer website to support families attending a PPM

• increasing communication throughout the assessment process so families are aware of progress

Climate action packs support residents and businesses

Essex County Council have created five Climate Action Advice Packs to help you reduce your carbon footprint. Each pack is tailored towards four different groups.

Photos
Norton

& Mountnessing

These are:

• Residents

• Schools

• Businesses

• Early Years and childcare settings

The packs offer cost-effective and achievable ways to help you become more sustainable.

They launched in 2022 and have been updated with new information. This includes funding and volunteering opportunities.

There is also a new look and feel, with the residents’ pack coming in an accessible easy-read version.

Climate Action Advice Packs are part of our Everyone’s Essex commitment. This involves working with communities and businesses over climate action. Download the packs for free online via www.essex.gov.uk/preview-link/ node/1021/a0d2a810-d05f-4a27-829df6bbe5360e2a and find out more about the ambitious Climate Action Plan.

First-of-its-type NHS service to improve bone health and prevent fractures

Residents in mid and south Essex will benefit from a fracture service where hospitals and GPs work together across the whole of mid and south Essex.

The new Fracture Liaison Service (FLS) aims to strengthen bones in those aged over 50, reduce fractures and free up hospital beds. The service identifies eligible residents who have suffered a fracture and offers them checks by nurses in hospital for

osteoporosis (fragile bones). Patients are then treated with bone medication or referred to services such as physiotherapy to reduce their risk of falling again. There are 70,000 residents over the age of 50 with osteoporosis in mid and south Essex, leading to 8-10,000 fractures each year. Across the UK it is estimated that there are 3.5million living with the condition.

Brentwood Borough Council increases electric vehicle charging points

Brentwood Borough Council, in collaboration with Believ, has increased the number of electric vehicle charging points in the borough, marking a significant step in the council’s commitment to enhance accessibility.

The newly added electric vehicle charging stations are located at two key sites: Chatham Way Car Park and King George’s Playing Fields.

The council has introduced 22 additional chargers, Chatham Way Car Park now features 8 chargers, including 4 fast charging points and 4 rapid charging points. King George’s Playing Fields has been equipped with 14 chargers, including 4 fast charge points in the car park adjacent to the entrance from Ingrave Road, 6 rapid charging points, and 4 fast charging points in the central car park. The scheme is part of the council’s climate change pledge and is designed to support residents and visitors and encourage greater take up of electric powered vehicles, as the government’s ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars in 2035 gets closer.

Ingatestone & District Camera Club

We are an active Camera Club based in the village of Ingatestone.

Our core membership is made up of both experienced photographers and those new to photography. We meet in person between September and May on Friday evenings at 8pm at the pavilion at Seymour Field, New Road, Ingatestone, CM4 0HH.

Our meetings are varied with photographic competitions, talks, given by both outside speakers and members, as well as practical evenings. Established members are always pleased to share their skills with others as well as being open to new ideas.

We next meet on Friday 13th September at 8pm at the address above. In the meantime, you can find us in the Parish Council tent at the Summer Show on Seymour Field on Saturday 20th July

between 12:30pm and 5pm. Do come and meet some members, talk photography and see some prints of photographs taken by our members. We look forward to seeing you then.

Do visit our website at www.ingatestonecamera.club. If you have any queries, just fill in the contact form on our website and we will be in touch.

We welcome beginners or more accomplished photographers and invite you to join us for 3 free meetings to get to know us and consider joining our club. Why don’t you just come along to the Summer Show or one of our meetings in September?

Saturday 20th July: Ingatestone and Districts’ summer show!

On Seymour Field, 12:30pm, probably the biggest show this year, so make sure you have it on your calendar!

It combines a traditional Village Fair with a Horticultural event, so there is much to see and much fun to be had.

On the fun side you (or more likely your children) can enjoy small dodgems, inflatable slides, a play centre, bungee trampolines, and other attractions.

Also there are children’s dances & races, you can watch the kids in action, cheer them on and maybe dance along with them! As well as Alpacas and Artisan stalls, meet the makers and find their unique art and handmade items made by local craftsmen (and women!).

There will be a dog show, you can enter your dog on the day or just watch what other people’s dogs get up to.

If you’re feeling lucky try the tombola with great prizes.

Or maybe visit the Horticultural Society’s marquee, check out the flowers, especially the roses, sweet peas and pot plants.

Weather willing there should also be a good showing of fruit and vegetables, plus there are handicraft displays too, from knitting, photography, art, to jams, chutney and pickles. Plus, cakes, ginger cake, Victoria sandwich, marmalade cake, even scones – unfortunately you can’t try any of these as they are needed for judging so that prizes can be allocated.

In the marquee is a children’s section too, ranging from flower arrangements to handwriting, model making and photography. All to be judged of course and prizes awarded later.

In the Parish Council marquee, is a photographic exhibition from Ingatestone & Districts’ Photography Club, exhibits from the Historical Society featuring Ingatestone’s museum and a display about the parish.

Local sports clubs will be demonstrating their range of sports activities for all ages. Whilst we’re talking local there will be a number of local charities present that you can learn about, maybe get first-hand experience (for example lip reading) and

even contribute to the causes that make a difference in our community.

Perhaps all this makes you feel worn out? Don’t worry, sit down and relax with the live choir event and sing-along to classic and modern melodies with the local Sound Collective choir.

If you get hungry there will be Hot-Dogs and a BBQ, cooked by the local Scouts and Explorers. If you need a drink, you can enjoy something refreshing from the bar run by the I&F Cricket Club, if you need to cool down our favourite ice cream van will be on site, with “99”s and more.

And if all those cakes in the marquee made you fancy some homemade cakes and other treats along with tea and coffee will be available from Home Comfort Catering in the Seymour Field Pavilion.

It opens at 12:30pm, prize giving at 4:30pm. Entrance adults £5, children free (but unlimited rides £5).

Signs they are a changing

Well, Bob Dylan said “Times they are a changin”, but have you noticed during the last month signs in Ingatestone have changed?

The sign at side of the Star Pub in Ingatestone High Street has changed, here’s before and after shots taken by Freddy Norton. The new sign is based on a five fingered Maltese cross incorporating the compass star of The Star. But what does it mean? The Maltese Cross symbolises a badge of honour, the compass direction, so maybe “come here we promise good food and drink”?

Meanwhile at Ingatestone Station a sign to let foot passengers know how to find the High Street has appeared, especially helpful when Ingatestone has those Artisan & Christmas Markets. Again, before and afters by Freddy. The sign is the first developed by the Parish Council’s Economic Development Working Group, chaired by Peter Batchelor.

Essex Fire Service encourages riders to sign up to life saving FireBike courses

Essex County Fire and Rescue Services are encouraging riders to sign up to life saving FireBike courses.

In Essex motorcycles make up less than 1% of traffic but were involved in 24% of all road traffic collisions involving death and serious injury. Motorcyclists are the highest road user risk group on Essex roads.

The Service offers three types of FireBike courses and is encouraging anyone who rides a motorbike to sign up.

• Better Biking Course – Key focus areas are observation, hazard perception, road positioning, gear selection and over taking.

• Advanced Machine Skills Course –Covering slow speed handling, positive steering, throttle control, emergency avoidance and breaking techniques.

• First Aid Course - The courses provide essential first aid training, giving riders the knowledge and confidence to help should they come across a motorcycle accident.

FireBike Manager for the Service, Andy Strougler said:

“With the weather getting warmer, jumping on a motorbike and enjoying the nice riding conditions is tempting, so we want to keep all riders safe.

“Our courses are delivered by our FireBike riders, who are qualified to the highest riding award available to the public.

“It doesn’t matter what age you are or how long you’ve been riding, everyone that leaves us always comes away learning something new.

“We’d encourage anyone who rides a motorbike to apply to one of our courses. The more people we upskill the safer our roads in Essex will become.”

Find Your Active June

The focus for June is “Pinch points” and how we can address disengagement from activity.

Pinch points are often thought of as road blocks or hurdles and in terms of physical activity this could mean time restraints, health issues, life events and other life pressures. However, pinch points can lead us down other paths and finding new motivators such as family, friends, goals, events and communities can help reengage with movement.

Maintaining motivation to engage with activity can be tough and everyone’s motivations can be different; moving with friends, achieving a goal, or being inspired by another’s story or journey. The #MoveWithUs campaign understands this and each month highlights a Move Maker who is inspiring other young people to make great strides in their active journey.

A lack of motivation extends to adults also, with the fear of being judged. Sometimes it’s about making small changes, such as getting active in the comfort of your home. The Find Your Active YouTube channel offers a range of videos to follow that are free and don’t take much time out of daily schedules!

Time restraints and busy family life can appear as barriers to activity; however, movement relieves daily pressures. Buggy Active who are part of the Active Mums offer, understand early motherhood is stressful but this shouldn’t discourage activity. Walking, running or stretching with a buggy and being outside removes those pinch points and improves how both mind and body feel.

Wellbeing is improved through movement; it shouldn’t be a cause of stress or worry in regards to costs. Understanding how you can move without spending money can help reengage with activity. Make the most of outside spaces and explore what Essex has to offer. Local and country parks that open their gates to residents offer the perfect place to walk, wheel, scoot and run.

If you need others to motivate you then communities for residents to come together and be active, is one of the best forms of encouragement. The Essex Pedal Power scheme embodies this community spirit and their regular training sessions and events are opportunities for recipients to meet others and learn more about the benefits of cycling. Cycling groups and led rides taking place across Essex, on the bright orange Pedal Power bikes, show how with the right motivation more residents will get active!

Essex residents may utilise the Find Your Active activity finder to explore local groups and clubs. Building these active communities that offer free opportunities with like-minded residents can help maintain involvement in physical activity; www.activeessex.org/activity-finder

Motivation ebbs and flows during our lifetime but engaging in physical activity is a choice that is lifechanging in so many positive ways.
