Hello readers and welcome to the autumn edition! I hope you’ve all had a brilliant summer. The weather has been a bit mixed as usual, but we’ve still managed to pitch the tent a few times which is great as I really do look forward to spending quality time away from home with my husband Roy and our friends. With the imminent change of season, don’t forget that British Summer Time officially ends on Sunday 25 October and you should put your clocks back by one hour. The nights are darker, the leaves are falling and Halloween and Bonfire night are just around the corner. It’s time for cosy nights on the sofa, where you can relax with a cuppa and have a good look through this edition. For those of you who like to plan ahead for Christmas, now is the time to start. You might just find inspiration for that unusual gift you’re looking for, and if you would like to get your house and garden ready for the festive season, you’ll find all the local people you need to help you within these pages. Please keep your business local where possible, our local shops and trades people always need your support!

Money Matters: Financial Health Check We buy a house. We look after it and keep it in good repair to ensure we’re warm and dry. We hope it stays that way. We can spend £10,000 on a car but we have to maintain it (at least to MOT standards!). Looking after things seems appropriate. We know we should, but do we? We buy a pension or an investment but what do we do with it? Often we receive contact from the public with pensions or investments that were bought many years ago from financial institutions (often high street) that no longer exist, and nobody is looking after them. Up until the last few years, most financial products were advised on a transaction only basis. Effectively, this meant advice was sought and a product solution was provided at the time, and the advising firm was paid accordingly. Financial advice has been traditionally supplied on this basis for over 100 years in the UK. At the start of 2013, the Retail Distribution Review changed how advice was given and paid for. Commission was abolished, replaced by a client agreed fee arrangement and in many cases today advice is paid for by the client both initially and on an agreed ongoing basis. Why the need for ongoing advice? Most investment driven financial products (whether stocks and shares, ISAs, pension funds or investment bonds for example) contain assets that have varying degrees of investment risk. Sometimes the risks of such investment change naturally through migrations in the markets. Or perhaps your own attitudes to investment risk can change. Your timescales for investment perhaps shorten.

10

Fund managers looking after the day-to-day running of the funds can ‘move on’, could be poor performing, or the costs become expensive and poor value. The overall suitability of a financial product can change, as can your personal circumstances. Legislation can change, rendering the product you are left with as being no longer fit for purpose. The recent rule changes to pensions have left many old pension contracts being unable to facilitate the client’s wish at retirement. Some companies merge or sell out, leaving clients in dormant funds and contracts. How would you know if the product you were left with was economical, efficient and still meeting your needs? How does it compare with other contemporary financial solutions? Many banks and building societies are no longer able to provide even the most basic of support to some of their legacy clients. Strict regulation means that firms can only provide financial advice where they are permitted to, and often that means high street investors are left without the help, support and advice they need to ensure their solutions are still fit for purpose. Isn’t it time you gave your finances an ‘MOT’? Seek independent financial advice and have your financial health checked.

Travel Bhutan: Taktsang, the Tiger’s Lair Long ago, they say, a holy man named Guru Rinpoche flew from the East on the back of a tigress to bring Buddhism to Bhutan. He landed high above the Paro valley on a vertiginous ledge where hermits soon followed to meditate in the caves. Taktsang, ‘the Tiger’s Lair’, is the most sacred place in this small Himalayan kingdom, claiming myriad shrines on the slopes and a monastery built on the very ledge where the Guru landed. Damaged by fire in the late 90s, Bhutan’s most iconic landmark was restored by the finest artists and welcomes visitors, pilgrims and monks who might choose to meditate for up to seven years in the most remote building. Glinting in sunlight or draped in shifting mist, Taktsang defies imagination, seemingly inaccessible as it clings precariously to the cliff face, hanging some 800 metres above the valley floor. Yet, it can be reached on a scenic three-hour trek, starting in a riverside meadow garlanded in prayer flags. Soon, the trail enters a forest of blue pines, rhododendrons and oak where wild primula and orchids line the path and lichen hangs from the trees like ghostly cobwebs. Sometimes you come across a makeshift stall with a colourful display of turquoise and coral beads, gleaming among human skulls polished for ritual offerings. A child beckons, a woman smiles but all is quiet except for birdsong and the occasional tinkling of bells as ponies carry the less able to the halfway point. Up there, by a log cabin framed in marigolds, Taktsang appears even more out of reach across a fathomless ravine, but there are great views of the valley with its golden paddies, meandering river and traditional houses festooned in auspicious signs and beautifully

20 20

carved eaves. At nearly 3000 metres, the air is fresh and Buddhist flags flutter in the breeze to send prayers in all directions. Beyond the cabin, the path climbs relentlessly above the tree line, past holy rocks and glistening shrines, mysterious footprints, gurgling springs and rows of tiny urns containing ashes of the dead, placed here to ensure a peaceful after-life. Just like the altitude, the scenery takes your breath away, from the mountain tops drifting in and out of the mist to the forest tumbling down to the valley in every shade of green. One final bend and you are faced by hundreds of steps staggering down to a wooden bridge to cross a sacred waterfall, then it’s up on the other side to the entrance gate, at last. Now, vertigo might strike at any moment for there is little room on the ledge where white walls and red and gold pagoda roofs jostle for space right against the rock, on the very edge of the precipice. Narrow rickety bridges, steps and mini-terraces lead from one temple to the next, with yet more dizzying views of the Paro valley. Inside every temple are murals of gurus and gods, gilded statues and offerings of fruit, flowers and colourful butter sculptures. Pilgrims prostrate and peep into the Guru’s cave, open only once a year, and now and then the chanting of monks echoes in the semi-darkness, punctuated by cymbals and gongs. Oil lamps flicker and the fragrance of incense rises all around. It’s eerie, inspiring and worth every challenging step along the way. By Solange Hando

Anyone who hasn’t already found it should pay a visit, to find out what they’re missing! From stunning costume jewellery, to eye catching tops and dresses, and the most comfortable layering knits or throw-on cover ups; the shop may be small but you’ll be amazed at their fantastic range. The boutique has been in Belper for almost two years now, but its new owner, Nicky, took over in April this year. “I’ve always loved the shop, so when I heard Lynda was moving on I called her and said ‘Where am I going to shop now?’...and that was that! Within 12 hours I was taking it on! It was a whirlwind decision but one of the best ones I’ve ever made. I absolutely love the boutique and the customers are so lovely.

I’ve made a few changes and put my own stamp on the place, without losing the essence of the shop. Whilst many of the lines remain the same, I’ve introduced some new ranges, which are very popular.”

Nicky Glynn, owner of The White Island Boutique

Most of the clothing comes from Spanish, French or Italian designers, and the European influence is evident in the beautiful fabrics, colours and styles. “I only buy one or two of each garment to make sure they remain individual; you don’t have to worry about bumping into other people wearing the same thing!” says Nicky. The autumn/winter range is coming into stock, with great gift ideas, must-have transitional pieces and warm winter garments including leather gloves, coats, fabulous faux fur gilets, cashmere scarves and a few show-stopping party outfits. So, give yourself, and your wardrobe, a treat and visit The White Island Boutique, 8a The Courtyard, Market Place, Belper, open on Tuesdays, and Thursday to Saturday, from 10am – 4.30pm. For a taste of what the boutique has to offer visit www.whiteislandboutique.co.uk (where a small selection of their range is available to buy online) or like ‘White Island Boutique’ on facebook.

Days out with Dennis Go by Bus? Why Not??

Barton’s Red Arrow to Derby and The Sixes to Belper.

Normally pronounced ‘Suthell’, Southwell is a small town to the north-east of Nottingham which has the magnificent Southwell Minster as its centrepiece; if you visit Southwell try and find time to visit it.

The return to Belper from Mansfield Bus Station is from Bay J on Trent Barton’s The Nines, on the hour and at 15, 30, and 45 minutes past the hour which will get you to Ripley in about an hour and a quarter.

Getting there!

Trent Barton’s The Sixes from Belper Bus Station (at 00, 15, 30 and 45 minutes past the hour) is your first bus. Change in Derby Bus Station, bay 5, to Trent Barton’s Red Arrow which will take you to Nottingham’s Victoria Bus Station. There is a bus every 10 minutes. Walk through and out of the Victoria Centre onto Lower Parliament Street and turn immediately left to the bus stops, where you want stop V4. Nottingham City Transport’s Service 100 to Southwell departs at 13 and 43 minutes past the hour... then 50 minutes later you are there! The bus does a circuit of the village before reaching the Minster where it stops. The Minster stands on a site where a church has stood going back to 627AD; however the present church was completed in 1150 AD. Should you choose to, you can come back to Nottingham from the same stop at 17 and 47 minutes past the hour, then on Trent

Alternatively, Stagecoach Service 28 to Mansfield leaves from the same stop at 45 minutes past the hour, taking just under an hour.

Leave that bus at Peacocks in Ripley town centre, cross the road, and there Trent Barton’s The Sixes will again take you back to Belper at 3 and 33 minutes past the hour.

Tickets

Bus Pass holders as usual travel free. All Trent Barton services (The Sixes, Red Arrow and The Nines) are covered by Trent Barton’s Zig Zag ticket. The Nottingham City Transport and Stagecoach services will require separate tickets. People who might be interested in the buses used are invited to try my transport ‘blog’ on http://railsroadsrunways.blogspot.co.uk.

Nostalgia Time Travel Made Simple There’s no need to spend valuable time and effort constructing fancy time machines to transport people back to the past. A hunt round the back of cupboards, up in lofts or out in garages will result in various things that can transport you back in time with ease, enabling you to nostalgically relive memories. The word nostalgia stems from both ‘homecoming’ and ‘pain’ or ‘ache’. This suggests it could be both positive and negative. In the past, it was considered to be a negative thing. The term was coined by a Swiss doctor, Johannes Hoffer in 1688 to describe a neurological disease. Nowadays, we more commonly use it to refer to a wistful fondness for the past. In the epic poem, The Iliad, Homer wrote: “Everything is more beautiful because we’re doomed. You will never be lovelier than you are now. We will never be here again.” This shows that nostalgia can have the benefit of improving our mood in the present. It connects our current self with the feelings of happiness we felt during times in the past. It also reminds us that, although those times are gone, we can be happy that we are who we are now. In this sense, nostalgia can exist simultaneously as both positive and negative. It can be considered as a longing for the past; perhaps even an idealised past that we think we remember accurately because of those rose tinted glasses. There seems to be a collective past that many of us share, where the weather was hotter, summers were endless and people were much happier than they are now. It is easy to spot reminiscences of this mythical past when the phrase “the good old days” crops up in people’s sentences.

There are various routes to travel back in time to these “good old days”. The sense of smell is generally considered to be what most often evokes memories of the past. I experienced this when I opened a pot of Play Doh for the first time in years. This feeling of nostalgia was exploited by Play Doh manufacturers when they released a Play Doh perfume. They suggested it was aimed at “highly-creative people, who seek a whimsical scent reminiscent of their childhood.” Although I agree the scent does have this effect, I’m not convinced wearing it as a perfume is the best idea. Food is another means to evoke feelings of nostalgia. Everyone has a particular comfort food from their childhood that can make them feel instantly better when they eat it. I can still feel the happiness of time spent with family at mealtimes when I remember a Viennetta dessert. This sense of home and comfort is tinged with frustration, however. My Grandad would place the delicious dessert on the table then insist we wait five minutes “like it says on the advert”. We never did convince him to let us eat it sooner. Maybe it’s time for me to root around in the loft and re-discover all my long lost toys from my childhood. Sadly I won’t find a Big Yellow Teapot up there – an iconic toy from the 80s that I never did get my hands on. But I know the box of toys I did save will take me back to happy times I spent playing games with my sister. My rose tinted glasses will naturally erase the trauma we experienced upon realising that a doll’s hair really doesn’t grow back… However, if I start to feel a longing for days of yore, where my fondness turns to sadness for the loss of what once was, I will remember the witticism of Peter De Vries: “Nostalgia isn’t what it used to be.”

Pauline Latham OBE MP I hope you have all enjoyed a lovely summer. As you read this, we will be fast approaching the darker, winter months. It has been a lovely summer, with time spent with family and friends and I am always pleased to be able to return home during recess and spend time in the constituency. It allows me the opportunity to get out and about in the local area and attend events that are taking place in the various villages and towns in MidDerbyshire. We are very lucky to have such an active Belper Food Festival local community with so much going on. The Belper Food Festival was fantastic once again this year. I thoroughly enjoyed joining thousands of others along the High Street sampling the food and drink on offer and meeting all the exhibitors – there was something for everyone. The Belper Games too continues to go from strength-to-strength and this year was bigger than ever. The tragic story of how the games came about will be known to many in Belper: following the death of his wife Penny to Systemic Scleroderma and Pulmonary Fibrosis, Nick Wheeler and his team have put on three fantastic Belper Games raising funds for these charities and also for Ataxia. More importantly, the event has raised awareness of these three little-known illnesses. A date for next year’s Games has already been announced, Saturday 16th July 2016; a tremendous day out for a great cause.

Visit by the Minister for Community and Social Care to Whitemoor to meet with GPs

The summer recess was also an excellent opportunity to host a visit from the Minister for Community and Social Care, the Rt Hon. Alistair Burt MP. The visit was arranged after I invited him to come to

Mid-Derbyshire to meet local GP surgeries looking to expand their services. Representatives from practices from Allestree, Oakwood, Spondon, Duffield, Borrowash and Belper attended the meeting. The meeting was held at the Whitemoor Medical Centre in Belper and after a brief tour from Dr H Kinsella, Senior Partner at Whitemoor, the Minister met with local GPs and health representatives from across Mid-Derbyshire to discuss the various issues that they experienced as health practitioners. The Minister responded by confirming that there would be a significant marketing campaign to recruit an additional 5,000 GPs by 2020. There would also be a need to increase community care as the older population increases in addition to encouraging a healthier lifestyle so that illnesses are prevented in the first place. I am sure that the Minister appreciated hearing the views and experiences of GPs and will have some key points to take back to the Secretary of State for Health for consideration. Before recess, I was delighted to be able to celebrate National Care Homes Open Day and I visited a number of care homes on the day in my constituency, including Springwood House Residential Home in Duffield. To celebrate the day, guests were invited to visit the Home to enjoy a cream tea and to listen to music. It was good to Visit to Springwood House have the opportunity to Residential Home talk to residents and meet with staff. The forthcoming months are going to be busy in the run up to Christmas with more events planned. Keep an eye on my website www.paulinelatham.co.uk for details regarding a further Pensions Workshop, Arts meeting and a Community Clear Up Day.

Just a Thought... I Can’t Believe It’s Not Better!

programmed now to berate ourselves over anything and everything. I’ve often heard people blame the media, celebrity culture, the pace of modern life and many more ideas for our constant analysis of our own self-failings.

Hello and welcome to another edition of ‘That’s Not Good Enough’, the game show where raising the bar impossibly high and ultimately losing is the only way to go. . . Hang on. . . That sounds like a fairly rubbish advertising campaign to me. Why would anyone want to enter into that? Good question!

Perhaps though, it is us as individuals who keep this ludicrous cycle of goal setting, bar raising and falling short on its eternal loop? So what if you aren’t earning as much as Dan next door, or aren’t as slim as Sandra from Spinning, and who really cares if your house isn’t front cover worthy or your Spaghetti Bolognese organically sourced? I’m getting fed up of competing with some unfounded and frankly unachievable standard, it’s BORING! So, I suggest next time you consider any form of bar setting, it should be the kind that serves a good house white with a live band playing – and cheers to us!

When you say it out loud it sounds preposterous but step back for a second and you’ll notice it’s actually a fairly familiar concept. It’s embedded in our everyday lives, maybe so deeply that we aren’t even aware of it. Truly though, who amongst us has not recently felt that they should have done better at something, that they let someone down, that they dropped the metaphorical ball whilst trying to keep the proverbial plates spinning? The Better Life No Ifs or Butts There are two things you can say with confidence, where we live. Firstly, that it rains - a lot. Secondly, if you don’t like the weather, just give it half an hour and then there might be something along that’s more to your taste. If, like us, you’re keen on becoming more ‘green’, having a water butt is a must. Otherwise, you’re literally tipping a valuable resource down the drain. Our problem has always been the layout of the garden. Well, that and my feebleness at lugging watering cans around. But Anne, who uses the Internet for research rather than Twitter, found a solution. “This water butt,” she declared, pointing at the screen, “will fill other water butts for us – and wherever we want to place them.” I must have made a ‘wow’ face because Anne immediately nodded sagely in my direction. Our Rainwater Hub arrived a few days later in the post. (Anne had, of course, ordered it before showing me, to save time.) After I’d prowled around it a couple of times, we agreed to let our neighbour put it up, so that it was done properly. To be fair, the instructions were easy-peasy, only I’m known to be drilly-silly. The neighbour popped over in the week, looked over the paperwork and scratched his head. “Are you sure it goes up on the wall?” “Of course,” I replied with my rehearsed answer, “it’s a gravity fed system.” Now it was his turn to make a ‘wow’ face and he didn’t disappoint. I left him to it and went off to make some kindling – because every man likes to feel useful. Half an hour later, the Rainwater Hub was installed and connected by a hose to water butt number two. The next day it absolutely poured down and, after a little trial and error (the error being that I hadn’t read the butt connection instructions properly – too busy sniggering), I checked the online video and soon everything was in place. The hub and our three water butts were duly named John, Paul, George and Ringo. Collectively: The Buttles. The whole system is, in effect, one giant water butt, only it’s spaced out around the garden. Now for the first time, we can also use rainwater, from the hub’s second tap, for the indoor plants in the conservatory; great news for us, the sweet peppers

and the chillies, as we’re on a water meter. The cat was curious about all the garden hoses, but soon went back to stalking the frog that Anne discovered in the damp ground behind the montbretia. Being able to harvest this much rain also means we can wash the car for free, should I ever get round to it. It’s on my list, along with growing kale beside the perpetual chard and trying a small lemon tree in the conservatory. Our handyman neighbour has already been back to see the hub in action, and to see the storage capacity of the system. He dropped hints about us renaming John in his honour. However, as he’s not named George (as in Martin), Pete (as in Best), or Stuart (as in Sutcliffe), that’s pretty unlikely. Mind you, there’s always the possibility of adding another Buttle to the band! By Derek Thompson

Potato Tortilla with Marinated Olives This Spanish baked omelette is great served warm as a speedy supper or is just as tasty served cold – perfectly complemented with a bowl of garlicky marinated olives. Serves 4 Ready in 45 minutes, plus marinating time Ingredients: For the marinated olives: 100ml olive oil ½ red chilli pepper, deseeded and very finely chopped 2 garlic cloves, peeled and finely chopped 1 tbsp fresh chopped parsley 1 tsp lemon zest 150g Kalamata olives 150g large green olives For the tortilla: 450g potatoes, peeled and thickly sliced 6 large eggs 1 garlic clove, peeled and crushed 10ml (2tsp) dried Italian mixed herbs 50g mature Cheddar cheese, grated Rocket leaves, to serve Method: To marinate the olives, heat the oil, chilli and garlic in a small pan until just warmed through. Stir in the parsley, lemon zest and olives and season with freshly ground black pepper. Transfer to a heatproof bowl, cover and leave to marinate in a cool place for a few hours or overnight. To make the tortilla, preheat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas Mark 4. Grease a 19cm x 23cm shallow cake tin.

30

Cook the potatoes in a large pan of boiling salted water for 3-4 minutes until almost tender. Drain well and arrange in 2-3 layers in the cake tin. Beat together the eggs and garlic in a bowl then add the dried mixed herbs and two thirds of the grated cheese. Season well with salt and freshly ground black pepper and pour the mixture over the layered potatoes. Sprinkle over the rest of the cheese. Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown and firm to the touch. Cool for 10 minutes then cut into wedges. Serve warm with rocket leaves and the marinated olives.

If serving the tortilla cold, allow to cool completely then cut into squares and wrap in greaseproof paper. It will keep in the fridge for 24 hours.

Humour: Being an Expert at Something Totally Useless I can do a few things. I have the odd skill. I can play the piano, cook a decent chilli and touch my nose with my tongue. I taught myself to snowboard, can juggle a bit, and when I was fourteen I was really quite good in goal. However, the one thing that I am best at in the whole world – the single skill I am yet to find anyone to beat me on – is spelling. I can spell like an absolute beast. I can spell pretty much any word on instinct, and I’ve been able to do this since I was a kid. I am the Ryan Gosling of spelling. All of which would be great if, in the modern world, spelling hadn’t become as outdated a skill as minstreling. I’ve been robbed of my own magnificence here. My greatest intellectual asset is being able to do something which even the simplest of computers can carry out in micro-seconds, with minimum effort. In short, I am lucky enough to have found a skill at which I am uselessly brilliant. You see, being able to spell almost any word is pretty much the lamest superhero skill in the box. No one’s ever going to spell the human race from the brink of destruction, are they? When extra-terrestrials commandeer the White House and threaten to eradicate all our major cities, President Obama isn’t going to call me up and beg that I hotfoot it to Washington to vanquish our alien oppressors with a perfect rendition of the word ‘ambidextrous’. I can’t spell people into finding me charming and sophisticated. I can’t aim to one day snag the Nobel Peace Prize for services to humanity. At best I could go to America, enter a spelling bee (why are these called ‘bees’, by the way?) and probably do rather well in one of those – but that’s the height of achievement possible in my special skill sector. Whoop-de-doo. Here’s the issue. Technology has rendered the ability to spell all but obsolete. It’s not just that computers can smooth out your mistakes, it’s that they now

34

do it without you even noticing. A friend of mine pointed out the other day that he has never been quite sure how to correctly spell ‘definitely’ – probably never will – and yet he writes it flawlessly in e-mails and text messages every single week, because auto-correct has the courtesy to do his dirty work before he’s even noticed the error. The drummer in my band is of the belief that the entire English language should be re-written phonetically, as in Italian. Rates of dyslexia, he says, are lower in Italy for this very reason. And while I can’t help but see the sense in this proposal, wouldn’t it butcher our beautiful, complex language, leaving behind a bland and functional shell? Or, maybe, I’m just clinging onto an archaic discipline simply because I happen to be quite good at it. Either way, at the end of the day, there remains only this to be said: if you ever need me, if you’re ever in trouble, shine the ‘i before e except after c’ call-sign into the night’s sky, and I’ll come running. Because, as sure as the sun doth rise, society will always need its superheroes. [Disclaimer: Any spelling mistakes in this article are to be attributed to the editer. Music Scene: WhiteMoor: Pause and Effect Pause and Effect is the brand new album from local Derby-based band, WhiteMoor. WhiteMoor were formed in 2010 by Barrington Mole (Guitars, Backing Vocals), who enlisted the services of Benny Ryan (Lead Vocals). Luke Inglis (Bass), Tom Scribbins (Drums) and Louise Tomlinson (Keys, Backing Vocals) completed the line-up in 2012. Pause and Effect is the third instalment from the band and takes them into uncharted territory, with a heavier, more guitar-driven, darker sound; whilst still maintaining the catchy hooks, delicate harmonies and soaring vocals that fans of the band have come to expect.

For a taste of ‘Pause and Effect’ listen to the trailer at www.whitemoor.co.uk. If you like what you hear, you can also download or order a hard copy of the album online. Keep up with the latest news and find out where you can catch the band locally at twitter.com/whitemoor or www.facebook.com/WhiteMoor, where you can also listen to some of the band’s recent interviews, including their interview with Dean Jackson on BBC Radio Nottingham.

Their sound has been met with critical acclaim, with Music-News.com saying: “Stadium synths, epic vocals and massive drums. WhiteMoor are bringing their stadium sound into the 21st century.” BBC Radio’s Dean Jackson, BBC Introducing and Mercury Prize judge, has been glowing in his praise for the band: “WhiteMoor are one of the finest bands around. What I love about them is they do the pop thing so well, but at the same time the guitars are used so creatively. They simply have everything and manage to do things that very few other people manage to achieve.” The album release in July was celebrated with a gig at The Victoria Inn, Derby.

Short Story The Test of a Good Raspberry “Did you grow these raspberries yourself Mrs Miles?” Richard asked, running low on small talk. Before they’d arrived, his girlfriend Ruby had hinted it was critical he make a good first impression on her grandmother. Then she’d abandoned him in the kitchen while she went out to fetch in the washing. She was taking her time. “Oh yes”, Ruby’s grandmother showed no signs of being put out to have a strange young man sat at her kitchen table, “and call me Betty”. It was clear that Betty liked feeding her guests. The more he ate, the more she seemed to warm to him. So far he’d put away three scones, two cups of tea and a fat wedge of pork pie. All he had to do now was eat this bowlful of raspberries to secure that vital seal of approval. He picked up his spoon and looked down at the fruit. Beneath the thick layer of sugar Betty had sprinkled over them, the raspberries appeared to be moving. He looked closer. Amongst the fruit, hundreds of greenfly staggered drunkenly, unable to decide whether this was the best, or the worst day of their lives. “These look delicious”, Richard said. His spoon hovered above the bowl. “They’re organic”. Betty smiled, “No nasty pesticides or anything like that”. “No need to even wash them then”, Richard said, hoping to jog Betty’s memory about the obviously overlooked stage of food preparation. “The test of a good raspberry is that it doesn’t need washing”, Betty whispered confidentially, “spoils the flavour”.

fate. It was the least he could do. “These things never go out of date do they?” Betty reappeared with a small rusty tin of evaporated milk. “It doesn’t even have a sell by date on it, which is a good sign”. Richard thought this was the worst possible sign. How could he tell Ruby that her grandmother was losing her mind? Betty rooted around in the cutlery drawer. “That tin opener’s gone walkabout again”, she sighed. Richard had to think fast before the tin opener was found. “Don’t open that big tin just for me”, he said cheerfully. Then, taking a deep breath, he closed his eyes and spooned the raspberries into his mouth. It was an unpleasant mixture of flavours and textures, sweet and bitter, soft and crunchy. He swallowed after the minimum of chewing, meanwhile scooping up the next mouthful, until the bowl was finally empty. It may have only taken a minute, but it seemed to last an eternity. “Delicious, Betty”, Richard said with one final gulp. “Really lovely, thank you”. “I expect you’ll want another cup of tea now?” Betty said.

“Quite right”, Richard coughed.

“Perfect”, Richard said, glad to have something to wash it all down.

Richard looked miserably at the contents of his bowl, unable to bring himself to offend poor Betty.

“And well done Ducky, you’ve passed the test”. Betty poured a cup of thick brown tea.

“Something wrong?” Betty said. “Can I tempt you to a drop of evaporated milk with them?”

“Thank you”, Richard said in surprise, “but what test?”

Before he could refuse she’d disappeared into the dark cave of the pantry. Richard grabbed the opportunity to save a couple of the bewildered greenfly from their grizzly

She picked up his empty bowl and winked, “a bit of protein never did anyone any harm”. By Jackie Brewster

Word on Wine Over the years of tasting wines from around the world, one undervalued white grape variety keeps reappearing – the Riesling grape. Riesling is one of Germany’s greatest grape varieties, grown since the 1460s. Due to its hardy survival in winter it has become a popular variety around the world and can now be found in the portfolio of virtually every wine producing country, from its country of origin, Germany, to New Zealand, Chile, USA and South Africa. Wherever it is grown, the Riesling grape has the ability to create a wine that is distinctive to that country without losing its own aromatic style. It can also make the full range of white wines, with the high levels of residual sugar found in the grapes producing a wine that is either fully dry in taste or a sweet dessert wine. Back in the 60s and 70s the name of Riesling became tarnished, due to some over-zealous producers who thought they could add inferior wines and some illegal ingredients to increase their profits. However, winemakers have now brought back wines made from Riesling grapes, producing some world-class wines. The Riesling wine I would like to introduce to you is ‘The Lodge Hill’ Dry Riesling 2014, made by Jim Barry in the Clare Valley of South Australia. Jim and Nancy Barry bought the vineyard in 1977 as he was sure that it would ‘produce some of the best Riesling in Clare’. They purchased their first vineyard in Clare Valley back in 1959, making this their 55th vintage. Jim sadly passed away in 2004 but Nancy, along with her son Peter, has an active role in the current running of the business. Theirs is the highest vineyard in Clare Valley, being 480 metres above sea level and on the eastern range of hills outside the town. This vintage was picked in early February 2014, as temperatures topped 40°C. The vineyard imparts its own characteristics to the grapes, delivering fruit with a beautiful natural acidity and citrus notes that ripen early because of the small crop produced. Extra care is taken with the grapes, with a small amount of free running juice taken from the crushed grapes before being sent for full pressing. This maintains the wine’s fresh and vibrant character, keeping it at the sharp end of the lime / citrus spectrum. It has achieved a bronze medal at both the Decanter Awards and the International Wine Challenge in 2015. Grapes: 100% Riesling grapes Appearance: Clean – pale straw in colour Nose / Aroma: Aromas of lifted spice, orange

Motoring

Motoring BMW i8 It looks like something from the set of Star Wars, drives like a supercar and costs £100,000. James Baggott finds out if the i8 is the car we’ve all been waiting for… What is it?

It’s rare a genuine landmark car arrives on the scene, but BMW have pulled it off with the simply staggering i8. Not only does it look like something from a science fiction movie, it has the technology from one too – but the good news here is this car is very real indeed. This is the German firm’s stake in the ground in the electric car market and proves supercars don’t necessarily need V8s to stir the emotions. Apparently.

What’s under the bonnet?

Ok, concentrate now, because this is a little bit more complicated than usual. The i8 features a turbocharged 1.5-litre three-pot engine that’s hidden behind the rear seats. Doesn’t sound very exciting, we agree, but there’s also a 129bhp electric motor which combines for an overall power output of 357bhp and 570Nm. That’s plenty of punch, enough to help it crack 60mph in 4.4 seconds and reach a top speed of 155mph. But the really interesting thing is it does all that while returning an incredible 134.5mpg and emitting just 49g/km.

What does the press think?

Auto Express praised it for its ‘stunning looks, low running costs and strong performance’, however they said the seats were cramped and the boot was small. Autocar added: ‘BMW would have you believe that the new i8 is the sports car of the future – and it’s a believable claim.’

What’s it like to drive?

It’s like driving the future. From the moment you squeeze yourself through those funky doors across the wide carbon fibre sills to the minute you notice it glows blue inside at night, you feel like you’re starring in your very own ‘Back to the Future’ movie. It makes an incredible noise as you power on, much of which is piped into the cabin via the speakers, but it’s still exciting nonetheless. It feels quick too. You sit low in the cabin, and with a rapid six-speed automatic gearbox that changes so fast you feel like it’s constantly accelerating, the sensations are heightened even more.

Our verdict

If you’re looking for something that will stand out from the crowd and is packed with clever technology, the BMW i8 really is the supercar for you. It’s great to drive, turns heads like few other machines on the road and offers amazing eco credentials to boot. But at £100,000 it’s not cheap and we can’t help thinking a BMW M4 would offer just as many thrills in the driving department. But that’s not the point of the i8 – this car is about showcasing new technology and highlighting BMW’s electric car range and it does that job very well indeed. And, if we’re honest, we’re very glad it’s here.

The Knowledge A combination of a three cylinder 1.5-litre engine and electric motor offer startling performance. It sounds great too.

What’s the spec like?

Well, first up it’s worth noting this is a 2+2 so if you’ve got kids, or small adult friends, you can slot them in the back and take them along for the ride. There are also those awesome dihedral gullwing doors to marvel at every time you get in and out. Specification includes all the usual niceties you’d expect – such as Sat Nav, DAB radio, Bluetooth, heated seats and leather. Lovely.

Model: BMW i8 Engine: 1.5-litre, three-cylinder, turbocharged plus electric motor Power: 357bhp, 570Nm Max speed: 155mph 0-62mph: 4.4 seconds MPG: 134.5mpg (combined) Emissions: 49g/km CO2 By James Baggott

Footnotes As we say goodbye to summer, I know that over the next month or so people will begin to contact me once again about their painful corns. During the summer when warmer weather has allowed the freedom of sandals (or wellies!), corns have been less of a problem; but, when the climate dictates we start wearing more enclosed shoes, the problems seem to recur. Corns are always caused by either pressure or friction or often a combination of the two. When the foot is exposed to pressure for long periods of time the skin at that point goes into overdrive and produces extra thick skin or callus to protect itself. The problem is that this just increases the pressure on the area and a vicious circle ensues; more pressure, more skin, more pressure, more skin and so on until there is so much pressure that the blood supply is lost to a tiny patch of skin and it dies. This becomes painful which makes the foot produce even more callus. A very painful process, as many of you will know. The treatment for this condition is to remove the callus and remove, or enucleate, the dead part of the skin. We also give advice about styles of shoe to avoid or ways of reducing the problem using cushioning often in the case of silicon pads or orthoses. Whilst it is rarely possible to totally prevent the problem, routine maintenance can reduce the discomfort to a very great extent.

Hair and Beauty Matters Well summer is over (what little we had), and we have once again dug out our winter woollies. Dare I say it, we are all starting to think about the party season and lots of festive fun! Perhaps, before the Christmas season gets into full flow, we should think about the men in our lives. It is very modern-day for them to look after their skin too! Most salons now do facials for men, manicures, pedicures and back massages... even spray tans. I have certainly noticed an increase this year in the number of men who visit the salon, which is really refreshing and something I’d definitely encourage men to do!

Skincare for Men We all get concerned about aging skin, men too, but there are things we can do to help. Men should use a good moisturiser and eye cream to help their skin combat dryness and prolong the signs of aging. Men’s eyebrows can also benefit from maintenance – a professional tidy every now and then can make a huge difference to the face, as you can see on the photographs. Men can also suffer from back acne, as well as us ladies, often caused by follicles being blocked by oils, dead skin cells and some body products. So, how can you help? Well, firstly make sure you check the ingredients in shower gels, body creams etc. Look for artificial colourings and pure lanolin as these are comedogenic (acne causing) culprits. Opt for fragrance-free soap or antibacterial cleansers containing tea tree or citrus extracts. Ask about a ‘back facial’ at your local salon, or look for salons that offer specialist ‘high frequency’ facials for acne, which help to dry up excess oils and kill bacteria in the spots. These treatments can not only improve the skin’s condition, but they are also very relaxing and a

great way to de-stress. Why not unwind together with a joint treatment in a double treatment room? Enjoy the experience!

Hair Back to the ladies...and it’s time for a quick hairstyle! If you need a quick and easy, but effective, hairstyle, why not try this great plait idea? 1. Put your hair into a side parting. 2. Part hair at the back into two sections, then do a side plait to the heavier side. 3. Take some pretty grips, and get them ready. 4. Take the smaller, un-plaited hair section and twist loosely then wrap it around the plait, not tightly, and don’t worry if bits fall out. Then, secure into the band at the bottom of plait. 5. Next, take the grips and place into where the hair is loose or has fallen out, securing it into the plait (see pictures above).

Alex Robinson Choosing a Personal Trainer

Whatever your fitness goals may be – from weight loss, to toning, or a new personal best in your next marathon – you need a knowledgeable trainer who can help you to reach them. But with many trainers and gyms out there, how do you go about choosing one? Well, looking at their qualifications and experience is a good place to start. Personal trainers can hold qualifications at levels 2, 3 or 4: Level 2 trainers can work unsupervised in a gym environment and write basic programmes for healthy exercises with no specific workout requirements; Level 3 trainers can work with a wider range of clients, usually one-to-one. They can work with clients suffering from less serious medical conditions as well as those with weight management or fitness related goals. They can also offer nutritional advice; Level 4 is currently the highest level of qualification and,

in addition to the above, level 4 trainers can work with clients with serious medical conditions, in post-operative rehab and alongside medical professionals in exercise referral schemes. By applying the same hard work and dedication as she does to her training, Alex Robinson is proud to have achieved level 4 qualifications. With a well-equipped private studio in Marehay, Alex trains clients in one-to-one or group sessions, helping with body conditioning and sculpting, nutrition and weight management, pre- and post-natal or post-operative exercise, boxing and pad work, fitness testing or sport-specific training. It is clear that this is more than just a job to Alex; it’s her passion: “I have been in the fitness industry for many years, competing at a national level in cross training, and completing many road races and triathlons. However, being a personal trainer is more rewarding than any competition I have ever done! To see the elation on a client’s face when they achieve their goals keeps me motivated. There are no limitations on what we can achieve; my clients have a vast range of different goals but, through fun and hard work, together we will make it happen.” You can view Alex’s profile on the National Register of Personal Trainers (www.nrpt.co.uk) and the Register of Exercise Professionals (www.exerciseregister.org). Derbyshire Walking: Shardlow Supplied by Rob Bradford www.derbyshirewalking.co.uk

Walk Area: Shardlow Distance: 3.5 miles Start Point: Wilne Lane Car Park OS Map: Explorer OL24 White Peak Area 1:25000 Map Ref: SK 446 300 Parking: Pay and Display Refreshment: Tearoom (weekends) and pubs in Shardlow Duration: 1 Hour 45 Minutes

The Malt Shovel

A circular walk along the waterways surrounding Shardlow, then back across farmland into Shardlow itself, and finally along the towpath of the Trent and Mersey Canal to Wilne Lane – the start of the walk. Being based around water for a large proportion of the route, this walk is quite flat throughout its length – the steepest part being the ten steps from the road to the canal side at the start/ end of the walk. A couple of words of caution regarding this walk: firstly the crossing of the canal via the lock gates at Derwent Mouth Lock requires great care, plus the ability to avoid the grease of the lock mechanisms. Secondly, the curious cows near to Shardlow Hall tend to get rather close!

56 56

Getting There: Shardlow is on the A6 between Derby and the M1 junction 24A. The entrance to Wilne Lane from the A6 is between the Navigation Inn and a large bow fronted house. Parking for this walk is a free long stay car park off Wilne Lane to the right, before the canal bridge. This car park has capacity for twenty to thirty vehicles depending on how people park. The tearoom on this walk is towards the end of the route at Hoskins Wharf in the Old Salt Warehouse. An entrance is available from the canal towpath – note that the tearoom currently opens only at weekends from 11am. Several pubs are also available in and around Shardlow. Regular buses from Derby, Loughborough and Leicester are available via the Skylink service, ask the driver for the Navigation Inn stop at Shardlow. The Walk: From the car park, turn right and walk towards the canal bridge. Before reaching the bridge, cross the road and descend to the towpath via a set of stone steps. At the canal side turn right to pass under the road bridge then follow the towpath for just over half a mile to Derwent Mouth Lock. At Derwent Mouth Lock carefully cross the canal using whichever of the lock gates is closed (take care as these are working gates and acting as a bridge is not their primary function. Also be aware of grease on the lock mechanisms).

Derwent Mouth Lock

Having crossed the canal and reached the start of the 55 mile long Derwent Valley Heritage Way, cross the footbridge over the

Health, Beauty & Fitness canal overspill sluice. Follow the path through a somewhat overgrown area of willow then over a stile and a two-plank footbridge to pass between two ponds. Follow the path to the left around the top of the pond then towards the hedge. Before reaching the hedge, the path meets another more well-worn path; turn right with the hedge to your left and walk towards the river. When nearing the river, look for a stile in the hedgerow marked with a yellow waymarker arrow. Pass over this stile and a second stile, then under the branches of a weeping tree and out into the next field. This field nearly always contains livestock, so if you have a dog with you on this walk please take this into account. Follow the path beside the river and pass into the next field through a large gap in the hedge. As the river begins to sweep to the right, look to the far left corner of the field for a new section of fence. This new fence is the exit point. Beyond the fence is a wide drainage dyke and the only crossing is at this point. The new fence has no stile (this has been reported), but is very sturdy and is easily clambered over. Having traversed both the fence and the dyke, turn left and follow the wide track to a metal stile and gate. Cross the metal stile beside the gate and walk down the lane into Great Wilne. Follow the lane around a right-hand bend, then as the lane turns left, continue directly ahead through a wooden gate into a small corral. Exit the corral by the gate to the left and follow the field boundary towards the rear of the houses on the opposite side of the field. Here the path continues between the garden walls and a hedge line; the best I can say about this section of the route is that it is somewhat overgrown! The path soon exits into a field over a stile with a rather unusual warning: “Chickens loose in field”. Keeping the hedgerow to the right, pass through this and two further fields. Ignore the stile to the right on entering the second field. The exit from the third field brings the route out into a large field with flood control banks. Walk along the top of the flood control bank ahead and slightly to the left. As you reach the end of the embankment take note of the sign: “Do not run in the field with cows”.

Cow ambush!

This is good advice – somewhere in the next three fields you will meet the cows! This herd of cattle tends to get rather close, so walk steadily and quietly, keeping dogs and children under control and all will be well. The exit from the second field is a metal three-step stile. In this case the cows decided to use it to ambush me (see photograph)! Once over the metal barrier, the path travels a short distance before reaching a more traditional wooden stile. Pass over this and onto a farm access road. Walk along the road towards the buildings ahead; the road soon splits with a well-worn track to the right and a large barn with a faded blue door. Walk to this barn then pass to the right between the barn and a wall; cross the last stile of the walk and emerge onto the main A6 near the Dog & Duck public house. Turn left and walk along the A6 for half a mile to the Old Clock Warehouse and Heritage Centre. Here, drop down to the canal side once again and walk north along the towpath for a quarter of a mile. Climb the ten stone steps that were descended at the start of the walk and bear right to return to the car park. We have taken reasonable steps to ensure that this walk is safe and achievable by walkers of a realistic level of fitness. The publisher accepts no responsibility for any injuries caused to readers whilst following the walk. Always wear appropriate clothing and footwear. Walk details correct at time of going to print.

Homes & Gardens

Gardening: Lovely Lawns Almost every garden has a lawn, and there is a lot you can do to keep it in good condition. Don’t wait until spring but get to work now with some autumn lawn care to keep your lawn looking healthy and green. Large weeds in small lawns are best removed by hand, perhaps using a sturdy old kitchen knife – perfect for removing dandelions, small clumps of daisies and other weeds missed by the mower. You should also take a look at the level of moss in the lawn: when green and luxuriant it can look quite attractive, but once it dies out the lawn will look really awful. On the whole, moss in lawns is encouraged by compaction, poor drainage of the soil and lawn surface and by excessive shading, perhaps by nearby trees or herbaceous plants in adjacent borders. It is worth doing anything you can to alleviate these problems, and for shading you should prune back shrubs which overhang the lawn or have trees professionally crown thinned or lifted, so that more light gets through to the lawn. Herbaceous plants are easily dealt with by using bamboo canes and string to ease them up and away from the grass. Compaction is relatively easy to deal with, and in small areas where the problem is not too bad, you can use a normal garden fork. Drive this into the lawn every 10-15 cm (4-6 inches) and ease it back and forth slightly to enlarge the holes created by the tines of the fork. This creates some drainage channels, which will also improve aeration. On very heavy sites or where compaction is bad, use a hollow tine aerator. These can be bought as attachments for some lawnmowers, or you can buy or hire a dedicated machine or piece of equipment. A hollow tine aerator removes cylinders of turf and the soil beneath, thus producing a better effect than using a garden fork. Once aerated, brush a sandy top dressing mixture into all the holes, using a mixture of sieved garden soil and horticultural sand, perhaps mixed with a small quantity of sieved leaf mould. The top dressing ensures that the holes are kept open to allow better drainage and aeration over a longer period.

Use a proprietary moss killer if moss is really out of control, applied exactly according to the manufacturer’s instructions; you should make sure that the moss is killed off completely before you attempt to rake it out. Raking out can be combined with scarifying, where you use a spring tined rake to aggressively rake the surface of the lawn, so that dead moss, thatch (the accumulated bits of dead grass and other lawn debris) and any other surface debris are removed. Once done, you will find that the lawn looks a lot worse than it did when you started, as it will look thinner and more moth-eaten. However, scarifying helps to ensure that the grasses receive plenty of air and allows for better re-growth; have faith, the situation will improve. If you still have bare areas once you have improved the texture of the soil and fixed drainage problems, then re-seed or overseed using a suitable grass-seed mixture. To improve germination and speed of growth, pin a piece of horticultural fleece or Enviromesh over the newly sown area. This will help keep it warmer and prevent birds from stealing the grass seed. DP Paving If you’re looking to improve the exterior of your home, from patios and driveways, to turfing and fencing, Kilburn-based DP Paving offers a service you can trust from an experienced and knowledgeable team. DP Paving’s extensive portfolio of local work shows the quality of their workmanship, as well as the total transformations that can be achieved. Much of their work comes through recommendation from their many happy customers. Jobs can involve anything from a refresh using bonded aggregate to improve the surface and increase kerb-appeal, to creating a brand new parking area or patio. Recently, they completed a new driveway and convenient off-street parking for 2 to 3 cars at a home in Kilburn, which involved the removal of over 100 tonnes of ground from the front of the property, the construction of retaining walls, re-routing of service pipes and new drainage. Owner Dean Pearson explains “We’re experienced in groundworks and service pipe installation and renewal, as well as being a council recommended drop-kerb

contractor – so we can provide a full service, no matter what the job demands.” They use quality suppliers to offer a range of materials, including tarmac, block paving, or resin-bonded aggregate to provide a variety of looks and finishes, with all working carrying a full 5-year quality guarantee. The team of four has been working together for the last 14 years, both for local residential customers and larger commercial clients. They all have road and street works qualifications and, for peace of mind, DP Paving has £5 million public liability insurance. DP Paving is offering All Things Local readers a 15% discount on bookings for 2016, so if you’ve been thinking about renewing your driveway or patio – or creating a whole new one – there’s no better time to contact Dean for a free, no-obligation written quotation. Book Reviews: Back to School Now that the summer is well and truly over and we’re back into a new school term, it’s really time to knuckle down and get on with your reading. We’ve picked out a selection of the best books about school, which will conjure up that ‘back to school’ feeling, whatever your age. You’ll be straight back into the classroom before the bell has rung. The Catcher in the Rye J.D. Salinger Holden Caulfield is cheesed off. The original personification of teenage angst, he narrates a couple of days in his life after being expelled from his stuffy prep school, and generations of adults take him into their still-adolescent hearts. The fact that, to this day, it remains on banned book lists should give you some indication of the power of this anti-establishment novel. Teenagers tend to either revere Caulfield, or absolutely detest him and can’t see what his problem is. Either way, it makes for controversial reading, and a great escape from the ‘olds’ who’ll just get on your case. The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie Muriel Spark Most people would say that they have one teacher who really sticks in their mind and who had a significant impact on their future. Unconventional and unorthodox schoolmistress Miss Brodie nurtures the high-achieving ‘Brodie set’ and has a great influence over her girls, through her charm and her guile. She fills her lessons with personal accounts of her love life, her politics and her unique slant on life and the future of the Brodie set. Miss Jean Brodie has become an iconic literary figure and has been brought to life both on the stage and in film, by Dame Maggie Smith no less. It’s a back to school must. Looking for Alaska John Green Fitting in at a new school is never easy, but Miles Halter’s life is transformed the day he starts at Culver Creek Boarding School and meets the eponymous Alaska Young. She’s beautiful and smart and funny and incredibly sexy, thinks Miles. He’s a smitten kitten but she is more than just a little bit complicated and confused. First comes love and then comes tragedy – and we’d expect nothing

94 94

less from the author of the blockbusting ‘The Fault in Our Stars’, John Green. How will Miles cope with life on a rollercoaster ride? It’s a really funny book and like your first love, will stay in your heart for a long time. Stargirl Jerry Spinelli Another unusual and left-of-centre teenage girl now, in the form of ‘Stargirl Caraway’. She arrives like a little sprinkling of sunshine at Mica High, strumming her ukulele and taking care of her pet rat. Leo Borlock falls head over heels for her and for a while it looks as though everyone at the school has a soft spot for Stargirl. But, teenagers are fickle, and as soon as you’re up they’ll bring you crashing back down to earth again. The one thing that might save Stargirl is the one thing that could also destroy her: Leo thinks she needs to blend in. Can you make someone be ‘normal’? Can you pretend to be something you’re not? This enchanting book celebrates our quirks and eccentricities and should be read by everyone – whether their ‘freak flag’ is flying, or it’s hidden. I’d Tell You I Love You, but Then I’d Have to Kill You Ally Carter The Gallagher Academy sets itself apart as being for ‘exceptional women’ and the high achievers among us. It’s actually a school for future spies. Here the young ladies learn combat and martial arts, code-deciphering and even have the odd bit of tuition in chemical warfare. Cammie is one such highly-intelligent student who’s being primed for a life in espionage. However, she can’t escape the fact that she’s also just a girl who’s got a bit of a crush on a boy. How does she go about concealing her identity from the one person she might be falling in love with? It could be a case of mission: impossible. Goodbye, Mr Chips James Hilton As the students move through the years and eventually leave school, there are some masters and mistresses who live out their days in the same establishment; the school becoming as much a part of their lives as their own family. Mr Chipping or ‘Mr Chips’ teaches classics at Brookfield School and is something of an institution. The kids think classics and Latin are antiquated subjects, and that their master has perhaps ‘had his chips’, but he perseveres as a staunch believer in discipline and education. Time does move Mr Chips on though, as he falls in love with the young and challenging Katherine and worries about the world that lies beyond Brookfield as times change and life continues.

Children & Education

The Diary of a Local Mum Language Barrier Most parents will remember that precious moment when their son or daughter uttered their first word. Whether it was ‘Mama’, ‘Dada’, the family pet, or something a little more ‘out there’ (my son’s first word was ‘Peppa’, as in pig – I’m not sure what that says about my parenting...); whatever it was, it marks the beginning of an exciting phase as your baby begins to interact and communicate with the world. In my son’s case, within just a few short months of his first utterance he was chattering away in full sentences, and I don’t think he’s paused for breath since. They constantly amaze you with the speed at which they acquire new vocabulary and use it, more often than not, in the right context. Your heart swells with pride as you hear them correctly naming everyday objects or using descriptions that give you an amazing insight into the way their little minds work. Then, the reality of this new situation strikes you. Your little person can not only now understand everything you’re saying, but is likely to repeat it at any given moment. All of a sudden, you have to be very careful about what you say when they’re around. Much biting of tongues ensues. Adult conversations have to become just that – chats that occur only when no little ears are present. There’s no chance of having a secret joke with your husband about Aunt Betty’s unfortunate hair growth, because next time you see Aunt Betty you know your little one will announce ‘hairy ears’ to anyone who’s listening. Your kids will also ask the most difficult or inappropriate of questions at inopportune moments, like when you’re stuck in a queue and they innocently ask (very loudly) “Is that a man or a lady?” Every single ear in the queue pricks up as the rest of the adults smirk, waiting to see how you’re going to delicately handle this situation whilst ensuring you don’t get a punch in the mouth before you reach the front of the queue (which suddenly looks miles away).

Sometimes, while you think that your child has mastered the language, it becomes apparent that no-one else knows what the heck they’re on about (the above situation being an exception, of course; they choose that moment to perfectly enunciate every word). You become used to their pronunciations and personal vocabulary, but when you encourage them to communicate with others, people give you pleading looks, as if to say “please interpret, I haven’t a clue what this child is saying to me!”. They can also come up with their own words for things that are sometimes so fitting that they become part of your family lexicon. A microwave will forever be a ‘sheema’ in our house (presumably derived from ‘machine’), while tracksuit bottoms are ‘twisties’ (because they have a tendency to twist round while you’re wearing them). At some point I’ll have to tell my children that these aren’t the real names for these items, but for now they’re so appropriate that they’ve stuck. As children get older, their vocabulary grows and pronunciation improves but the language barrier remains – it just shifts a little. Their utterances still require some interpretation but this is because they’re using words you’ve either never heard of, or never heard used in that particular context. Being ‘sick’ is suddenly a good thing, and ‘epic’ can be used to describe anything from a sandwich to a holiday. The secret is, although you’re expected to understand these words, you must never, ever use them. Whilst their vocabulary expands exponentially as they approach teenage years, the proportion that they use shrinks drastically. Instead of interpreting their mispronounced utterances, you’re required to interpret the various meanings of a single word based on inflection alone. ‘How was your day?’ can be answered with ‘ok’, which can mean “Great, I had the best day ever!”, or “Not too bad but I’m tired and I’d like some time alone,” or “Terrible, I really need a hug.” Misinterpret at your peril.

Local History: A Fire at Waterloo

On February 22nd, 1900, there was a disastrous fire at Burton’s shop, Waterloo House in Market Head, Belper. Severe disruption was caused to the town, which prompted the following letter to Belper Urban District Council from local tradespeople: Gentlemen, At a meeting of the undersigned Tradesmen of Belper held on Monday night last it was unanimously decided to bring before your notice several suggestions that were then made for the improvement of the town, and the better working of its affairs. Firstly: We believe the opportunity has now arisen to widen the thoroughfare at the entrance to the Market Place from High Street and Church Street. As you are aware the junction at the point named is very narrow and the road space is quite inadequate for present traffic. The fire at Mr Burton’s has obviously created an opportune time for alterations, and we hope the Council will use their best endeavours to widen and improve the thoroughfare. Secondly: The faulty state of the Fire Brigade and the inefficient and obsolete method by which the firemen are summoned compel us to pray the Council to at once adopt some remedial measures to place the Brigade in a better and more efficient state which would, without any considerable increase in the cost of the Brigade, give greater security to the town. We suggest that the Council provide: A) a hand-cart with three lengths of hose pipe, one stand pipe to fit each pattern of hydrant and a stand pipe with requisite implements to be kept at Turncock Varney’s house for use in case of emergency in any part of the town. B) That additional boxes with the necessary hose and pipes be provided for different districts in the town. Thirdly: We suggest that the Council should point out to the Gas Company the advisability of having stop taps attached to the gas mains in various parts of the town, so that in the event of a repetition of the disaster of February 22nd, only a small number of people would be inconvenienced by the disruption of the gas supply. The risk of explosions would be much reduced by the adoption of such methods. To the above suggestions we hope the Council will give the same attention and deal with the matters in the same

progressive spirit that has marked the Council’s labours during the past three years. We are, Gentlemen, Yours faithfully, etc. Much discussion ensued at the next Council meeting concerning the points raised. Mr Southern said that stand pipes at various centres would facilitate the quicker extinguishing of a fire. He thought also that some quicker means of calling the firemen ought to be in vogue. Mr Southern next referred to the wisdom of having stop cocks attached to the gas mains and instanced the late fire when all the gas was turned off at the gasworks, causing inconvenience the next morning. Mr E. Smedley commented that many other works had to stop after the fire due to lack of light. With reference to the widening of the street opposite, all present agreed that the proposed alteration would be of considerable advantage. Regarding the Fire Brigade, the Chairman reported that the Fire Brigade Committee had already taken the matter up and there was no doubt there would be a reformation. Belper Historical Society has a programme of talks at the Heritage Centre on the first Wednesday of the month from 7.30 pm. The October meeting will be the AGM and social evening, and on November 4th Mary Smedley will talk about the history of Brettle’s and hosiery manufacture in Belper. All are welcome, and the charge to visitors is £3. Members also attend St. John’s Heritage Centre on the last Saturday of the month from 9.30 am to 12.00 noon, and are available to help visitors with queries about Belper’s history. The Roll of Honour recording the fallen in the First World War will be turned to the next page at this time.

From the 9th onwards, relationship and partnership issues become important; this is a good time to make any necessary changes as your self-confidence is at an all-time high. November: Stern Saturn is now at the highest point in your chart, keeping you focused and attentive to any new prospects that may further your career. The new moon in Scorpio on the 11th opens your mind to new horizons; opportunities for earning extra cash could provide a big break.

Community

Friendship Blooms Show your appreciation for a fellow member of the community; it may be a friend, a family member or maybe someone you’ve come Sue Hopkins, into contact with who The Flower Shop provides a wonderful service or who works hard to make a difference. Let All Things Local surprise them with a fresh bouquet of flowers. All Things Local has joined forces with Sue Hopkins (pictured) from The Flower Shop in Horsley Woodhouse, to offer readers the chance to show their appreciation for a fellow member of the community. The recipient of this issue’s bouquet is Annabel Froggatt of Horsley Woodhouse, nominated by her mother, Judith Froggatt of Morley. Here’s what Judith wrote:

Annabel Froggatt (right) receives the bouquet from her mum, Judith Froggatt.

Derbyshire DE56 0NA or e-mail your nomination to karyn@allthingslocal.co.uk putting ‘Friendship Blooms’ as the subject. Please include your full name, address and daytime telephone number on your nomination. Closing date for nominations for the next issue is Wednesday 28 October 2015.

“I would like to nominate my daughter Annabel Froggatt. She has raised money for Cancer Research since her nanna died. Initially through “Race for Life”. Her uncle and a very dear friend have also died from this disease. She has increased her efforts and has just completed her 3rd successful major garden party where she involved the help of local businesses for prizes for her raffle. The most recent party has taken since April to organise but her enthusiasm has never faltered for this cause which is so close to her heart. To date she has raised £10,000.” Judith Froggatt.

Bereavement Matters There is no doubt that the recent funeral for Cilla Black was one of the biggest public events of the year, but from a professional point of view, it represented a perfect send-off. Not only was it respectful and smooth-running, it encompassed everything that Cilla stood for, while also offering some light relief along the way. If there is such a thing as a “good” funeral, it needs a mixture of sadness and humour, because funerals have become as much about celebrating someone’s life as mourning their passing and humour is very much a part of life. This was certainly the case for Cilla, as evidenced by Paul O’Grady’s witty eulogy, which made the congregation laugh out loud. At one time, laughter at a funeral would have been unthinkable, but funerals are rarely completely straightlaced now. I have attended funerals where the eulogies have been full of extremely amusing anecdotes, although they have stopped short of being completely off-the-wall – at least until the wake. In many other respects, Cilla’s funeral was very traditional. Her coffin was polished wood, the celebrity mourners wore black and she was given a Catholic requiem Mass, albeit without the historic solemnity of a traditional Catholic funeral. But there was a sign of the times in the way in which the crowds outside openly displayed their emotion and also

echoed the funeral for Diana, Princess of Wales by throwing flowers onto the bonnet of the hearse. It was also striking how, as Cilla’s coffin was lowered into the ground, around 2,000 onlookers started clapping. This is a very new phenomenon but was extremely appropriate. “There, in that moment, was the measure of the love that is felt for Cilla,” was how actor Christopher Biggins later described it. “It was perfect – her final applause.” That sense of perfection is what every family who comes into our funeral home is looking for. They feel it is their duty to give someone the send-off they deserve, telling the mourners what it is that made the deceased special and giving them the opportunity to pay their own respects. Our job is to help them achieve that, which is why we recognise only too well how Cilla’s funeral arrangements created the ultimate send-off to a much-loved mother, friend and star.
