Trey Shannon completed 939 laps, setting a new record of 312.4 miles for a 24 hour solo run

John-Hunter Nemechek, and Cody McMahan being a few that were in attendance. The young guns set the stage for the event, with Gray Gaulding and John-Hunter Nemechek each laying down a blistering lap in Friday night qualifying to put themselves on pole for Saturday’s two heat races. Australian Brad Cox and UARA-Stars racer Devin Jones were victorious in the heats and would make up the front row for the 15 lap main event. Jones shot out of a cannon at the start and quickly pulled out to a 10 kart length lead early. Cox maintained second off the start and began hunting down his fellow front row starter. Unfortunately for Cox, 15 laps wasn’t enough. He managed to pull to Jones’ rear bumper coming to the finish, but was

he United States is now home to another world record thanks to the efforts of Virginia’s Trey Shannon. The Racing for Tourettes 24 Hour Challenge Guinness World Record attempt for driving a kart solo for 24 hours on an indoor circuit took place over the weekend at The Pit Indoor Kart Racing in Mooresville, NC. Circulating around a 0.3327-mile course, Shannon completed a total of 939 laps, setting a new record of 312.4 miles. More importantly, Shannon was able to raise money and awareness for Tourette Syndrome Association (TSA). “With no record in the Guinness World Record book for the indoor 24 hour solo run, we were able to set a completely new benchmark,” Shannon told EKN after completing the task. “Two records in the span of about 15 months feels awesome.” The oddesy began just before 10:45 am Friday morning as Trey set off aboard The Pit’s Sodi RX7 machine. Shannon started off strong, laying down some fairly aggressive lap times during the first 6 hours. During each stop he’d work with his physiotherapist and close friend Mat Harrell to keep his muscles loose, his body warm, and his hand eye coordination sharp. With the absence of mechanical gremlins to worry about, the team kept focused on logging laps and steadily building up Trey’s mileage count. After a few adjustments to his pace and driving line, Trey settled into a solid pace for the overnight hours. The major challenge, aside from driving a kart for 24 hours, arrived around the 19th hour. By 6:00am the temperature inside the building had dropped to an unexpected 24 degrees, and was

beginning to cause problems. When Trey came in for a scheduled stop just after 7:30, his body temperature had dropped and hypothermia was starting to set in. The team did what they could to get him warmed up, and after an extended break, sent him back out for the closing laps of the 24 hours. “I expected it to be cold at night, but not 8 degrees below freezing,” continued Shannon. “The weather forecast showed it would be 34 degrees, and we prepared for that. The folks at The Pit had never been in the facility for an entire night before, so there was no way to anticipate such a big difference between the temperature in the building and the outside ambient.” Followed by a spectacular two row formation of the 16 drivers in attendance for the Pro Challenge All Star Kart Race, Trey crossed the line at 10:43am Saturday to complete his 939th lap, establishing a new Guinness World Record of 312.4 miles. “I’ve put so much time not only into training for these attempts, but into planning them as well, so for both of them to turn out as successful as they have is very rewarding. What feels even better is the support I’ve picked up along the way, and all the great friends I’ve made in the process. I think now I’ll take some time to relax and then figure out what I’m going to do next!” In addition to Shannon’s Guinness World Record attempt, Racing for Tourettes also hosted the Pro Challenge All Star Kart Race as part of the weekend’s festivities. Racing for Tourettes and Raceland Indy Motorsports Development Group put together a great line up, with drivers like Jonathan Summerton, Mike Skeen,

unable to make a move, with Jones crossing the stripe first for the win. The standout of the show was 15 year old Legends racer Trey Jarrell. Starting deep in the field after a disappointing heat race, Jarrell put on a passing clinic to put himself in the fight for a podium spot late in the race, battling hard with factory BMW driver Jonathan Summerton. Summerton put the youngster’s skills to the test, making his kart very wide down the stretch. Jarrell, however, was not to be denied, orchestrating a brilliant pass on the final lap with only a handful of turns left to put himself on the podium in third place. Summerton would hold on for fourth, while CJ Faison recovered nicely from a late spin to round out the top 5. It is also not too late to donate to the cause. Racing for Tourettes is leaving their Racers Raffle open until 11:59PM December 19. Tickets are available at http://www.treyshannon.com for $25 each, 3 for $50, or 5 for $75. Prizes include a 2-Day driving course at Bondurant, GoPro HERO3 camera, Bell GP2 Helmet, set of MG Yellows courtesy of DRT Racing, a Big Foot kart stand, MyChron4 steering wheel, Raceceiver transponder pack, and Hero Card package from Raceboost.com. Winners will be announced December 20 on http://www.treyshannon.com as well. All proceeds from the raffle will go toward Racing for Tourettes’ efforts to raise awareness for Tourette Syndrome, and support the national Tourette Syndrome in funding TS research.

R

acing is always about speed and endurance - and like the 24 Hours of Daytona, the 12 Hours of Sebring, or the 24 Hours of Le Mans - both are needed to reach the finish line. The only event that can reach that can test man and equipment in United States karting is the RoboPong 200. The ninth running of the event will took place the weekend of October 12-14 at the popular New Castle Motorsports Park, just 45 minutes east of Indianapolis, Indiana. Roughly 50 teams of 2 to 4 drivers from across the country battled for 200 laps around the challenging 1-mile circuit aboard TaG powered karts, all fighting for a piece of the record $22,000 purse and to etch their names into the side of the Dan Wheldon Cup. Mark Dismore - owner of the New Castle Motorsports Park and promoter of the RoboPong 200 - is a former 24 Hours of Daytona winner and a karting legend. When the facility was built in 2003, he had always hoped to host an endurance-type event. The opening event was a three-hour fixed timed event, held in October 2004. From there, the event continued to grow, welcoming a number of IndyCar, NASCAR and other professional motorsports drivers over the years. This year’s event has reached a record mark for the purse to be awarded, as Dismore will hand out $22,000 in cash along with numerous prizes throughout the weekend. Along with the RoboPong 200 main event, Dismore has added two Yamaha support races to the weekend. Yamaha Junior and Yamaha Sportsman racers will compete in a Qualifying, Prefinal, Final format at extended lap counts compared to normal karting events (15-lap Prefinal, 30-lap Final). Another $20,000 in cash will be awarded to the Yamaha categories with $5,000 handed out to the winner of each class. Aside from the cash and prizes on the weekend, the RoboPong 200 competitors will be racing for a piece of history, to place their name on the coveted Dan Wheldon Cup. The British driver lost his life in a horrific crash at the IZOD IndyCar Series World Championships in Las Vegas on October 16, 2011. Weldon was a favorite in the karting community, getting his start in racing through karting and continued to race in the sport just a few weeks prior to his death. He was often quoted as saying that ‘karting is the purest

form of motorsports’. Wheldon was a competitor at the RoboPong 200 since 2005, winning the event that year and always a fan favorite each year he returned. A very close friend to the Dismore family, there was no greater way to remember Dan’s life then renaming the event trophy in his honor. The 2012 edition of the RoboPong 200 ended as quite possibly the most challenging race in the nine year history. The competition level was intense, and the changing weather conditions kept every team on its toes throughout the 200-mile race around the New Castle Motorsports Park in central Indiana. For the first time in event history, rain hit the area during the course of the event, throwing in a change-up from the typical race strategy formulated year after year. In the end, it was the young guns of Sam Beasley and Jacob Donald who took the checkered flag, scoring the $10,000 pay put up by NCMP and Mark Dismore, adding their names to the Dan Wheldon Cup. Donald ran consistent laps, avoiding trouble throughout the final 45 laps of his stint. The gap back to Simpson would decrease and increase as the laps went on, eventually keeping around the 20-second mark. When the checkered flag waved, Donald raise his hand in celebration crossing the stripe for the 200th time, earning the 2012 RoboPong 200 victory. He and Beasley, along with the efforts of the entire KartSport North America squad, took home the $10,000 paycheck. It was the fourth win for the Arrow brand and just the second for Rotax. Simpson and Seward, regulars of the event, each earned another podium finish and $3,800 aboard their DRT Racing DR Kart. The 000 Top Kart suffered a brake issue on lap 168, and was forced to retire. Third place came down to the wire with Dunne/Harrington entry working around the Owen/Dignan with 12 laps to go to secure the position and $2,800, improving on their fourth place finish from a year ago. Both Owen and Dignan made their RoboPong debut on the weekend, placing a respectable fourth and putting a second KartSport North America entry on the podium for a second straight year. Their take home was $2,400. Rounding out the top-five was Russell Karting with Jim Russell Jr. and Joel Jens (Parolin/Leopard). Jens completed most of the laps for the team and running a similar pace to the field.

Page 14

The Trackside Motorsports (Merlin/Leopard) entry drove to a solid sixth place finish, losing out on fifth in the final few laps, coming from 21st on the grid. The Hard Charger of the race was Ed Carpenter Racing entry (Arrow/Leopard), featuring 2009 winners Ed Carpenter and Nathan O’Rourke. Coming from 31st on the grid after handling issues in qualifying hurt their pace, they avoided any major issues and drove up to seventh. The FKS MCR Racing (Merlin/Leopard) improved as well, going from 20th to eighth with Jamie Sieracki and Colton Ramsey behind the wheel. Team Goodyear (Birel/Leopard) ran to ninth with Michael Goodyear and Sam Cate while Chastain Motorsports (Kosmic/Leopard) - Sam Chastain, Jake Craig and Andrick Zeen completed the top10. Sixth through tenth received $200 in cash back along with a complete set of Bridgestone tires. The Yamaha categories kicked off the racing Sunday in support roles. The Junior class was up first and put on a great show for the 30-lap event. Camden Speth (Arrow) and Joel Jens (Tony Kart) broke away from the field early thanks to their front row starting spots. They took turns at the point, enjoying some space on the field until about the halfway point when a train of karts closed in, making the lead pack seven drivers. Shuffling took place and Derek Dignan (Arrow) found his way to the point, and at the same time the group dropped to six as Kyle Kalish (Merlin) retired with an engine-related issue. Jens eventually put himself in second and helped push Dignan away from the field. He took over the lead on lap 23 and was able to distance himself from Dignan quickly, who came under fire from Mike McAndrews (Birel) and Emerson Reed (Merlin). Lap 24, the duo worked past Dignan for position, and set their sites on Jens who enjoyed an eight tenths lead. With the draft, they cut the lead by two-tenths, despite all three running their fast lap of the race. As they tried to cut it even further, Reed lost the bumper of McAndrews and the draft advantage went away. Jens was able to hold strong and reach the checkered flag first. The win gave him $5,000, making his weekend total $7k with his RoboPong winnings. Reed executed a solid final corner pass for the second position, putting McAndrews third. Sam Cate (Tony Kart) advanced to fourth with Dignan back to fifth over Speth. The Sportsman event was a one-man show as Brandon Lemke (Merlin) dominated the 30-lap event. He and Anthony Gangi Jr. (Tony Kart) broke away from the field early on, running nose to tail. Lemke however was able to drop Gangi off from the draft and stretched out to a five-second advantage at the checkered flag for the $5,000 check. Gangi held on to second with Neil Verhagen (Haase) a close third. Michael d’Orlando (Kosmic) edge out Zach Holden (Arrow) for the fourth spot. Well over $45,000 in cash and prizes were awarded on the weekend, thanks to Mark Dismore, the entire NCMP staff, and all the event sponsors and supporters. At 50 teams along with the 20+ drivers for the both Yamaha categories, this year’s was one of the more exciting events and most competitive fields of the season. It will continue to be a must-attend event as the years go on, as the intrigue of testing man and machine around the New Castle Motorsports Park brings an excitement you can’t find anywhere else in North American karting.

On November 22nd, many of America’s top karting drivers assembled in Miami International Airport to embark on a journey to Portugal where they would compete in the Rotax MAX Challenge Grand Finals. This event would crown four world champions in the Rotax MAX categories, and Team USA looked to have it’s strongest team ever. heir journey would last 11 days and the anticipation for what was to come could be felt throughout the entire team. Through the generous contribution of Ocala Gran Prix’s Jorge Arellano, many additional family members and supporters were able to make the trip with the team by taking advantage of a reduced travel rate. Having a big cheering section for Team USA made the event, informally known as “the olympics of karting”, even more special. 2012 marked Team USA’s 12th trip to the Grand Finals, having made their first appearance in Malaysia in January of 2002. During their history, the team has had some very impressive finishes, highlighted by Curtis Cooksey’s second in DD2 Masters in 2008 (Italy) and a second for the team in the Nation’s Cup in 2009 (Egypt). For 2012, Team USA consisted of 19 drivers; five Junior MAX, six DD2 Masters, and four each in the Senior MAX and DD2 categories. These drivers qualified for the Grand Finals during the

season through their results at the U.S. Rotax MAX Nationals and the three North American international events, the Florida Winter Tour, The Rotax Challenge of the Americas, and the Rotax Pan-American Challenge.

Junior MAX The 2012 Junior MAX squad consisted of Florida Winter Tour champion Oliver Askew, Pan-American Challenge champion Ashley Rogero, and Juan Manuel Correa. For Oliver and Ashley, this would mark their second trips to the Grand Finals Oliver Askew became the first official member of Team USA this year when he won the Florida Winter Tour Junior MAX title. Oliver has had a strong year in 2012 and, drawing off his experience from the 2011 Grand Finals, arrived in Portugal more focused than ever. Unable to get in a clean lap in qualifying, Oliver would have to start the heat races from the 9th row. However, for

Page 20

Carlton and a Speed on your kart, Nice!

a natural racer like Oliver, this was more of an inconvenience than a setback. During the heat races, he comfortably scored enough points to go straight to the finals in 16th. As series of passes and contact with other drivers saw him moving up and down the leaderboard. However, in the end he finished right where he started, in 16th place. The fastest of all Team USA’s Junior MAX drivers in qualifying was Florida’s Juan Manuel Correa. JMC and his tuner Bryn Nuttall worked closely together all week and good results in the heat races had them going straight to the finals. Juan would start the pre-final 21st and work his way up to 14th. In the final, an incident in the tight turn three knocked Juan way back. However, he kept his head down and fought back to a 22nd place finish in the end. Considering the level of talent at the Grand Finals, and the fact that this is only his first year in Junior MAX, Juan’s performance in Portugal ranks him very high on the “who to watch” list for 2013. Ashley Rogero was another qualifier from an international event when she won the Rotax Pan-American Challenge held in Colorado. Ashley’s week started well but progress was difficult to find. As improvements were made in some areas, others suffered and as a result, she would find herself fighting to make the finals through the Last Chance Qualifying race after being classified 52nd in points after the three heat races. After a 24th place start in the LCQ, Ashley was able to move up to a 19th place finish. Unfortunately this would keep her from the finals on Saturday.

DD2 Masters The largest group within Team USA this year was the DD2 Masters contingent which had six competitors. This group included Florida Winter Tour and U.S. National Champion Alan Rudolph, Pan-American Challenge Champion Mike Jones, and U.S. MAX Masters National Champion Johnny Blair. Also on the team were Rene Martinelli, Bill Lester and John Crow who qualified through strong performances at the U.S. Nationals in South Bend, IN. With the combined experience within this group, good things were expected. The week started off well with most of the DD2 Masters in the hunt. As expected, Alan Rudolph was consistently in the top five with the others not too far behind. Mike Jones struggled through the first couple days with some mechanical issues that hampered his qualifying time. However, once the problem was fixed, he was flying around the Kartodromo Internacional do Algarve. John Crow entered the week with just one goal in mind, make

the final. Both he and his tuner Brian Robson stayed focused on that single goal. When the set of heat races had been run, Alan, Mike and John had all secured enough points to go straight to the finals. Rene Martinelli and Bill Lester were also working hard to find the right balance with their setups. Both drivers fought the tricky conditions like true champions and put their years of racing experience to work. Unfortunately, issues throughout the heat races placed both Floridians in the Last Chance Qualifier to try to make the finals. Misfortune for Rene in the LCQ kept him on the grid, denying him a chance at making the finals. Bill had a great run in the LCQ, making it all the way to tenth from his 22nd-place starting position. But, with only the top 6 transferring to the finals, both competitors were out for the week. Johnny Blair went into the week with very little experience in a DD2. In fact, until the Team USA test at Ocala Gran Prix in October, he had never even driven a DD2. Like the champion he is, he worked diligently on his setup, improving each and every time

Louie Pagano brought his #254 home 29th in Rotax Senior on the race track. Unfortunately for Blair, a disqualification in his first heat race for being underweight set him back to a position he was unable to recover from. Thus, Johnny did not make the finals, but was upbeat as ever and vowed to make next year’s race in New Orleans. In the final, Alan, John and Mike made great starts. By lap 10, both Alan Rudolph and Mike Jones were inside the top 10 and on the move while John was fighting back after a messy off-course excursion. Around midway, both Alan and Mike got shuffled back through the pack as well which led to 18th and 20th place finished respectively. With John classified as 29th, these weren’t the results some were expecting. But, they underscored the competitiveness of the DD2 Masters class at the Grand Finals. Taking the win in the class was South Africa’s Cristiano Morgado who made history by being the first driver to claim three Grand Finals world championships.

Senior MAX Senior MAX was another class where Team USA was looking to do well. With Challenge of the America’s Champion Phil DeLaO, U.S. National Champion Danny Formal, and Grand Finals veterans Andrew Palmer, Sam Beasley and Louie Pagano making up the squad, there was no lack of driving talent. On Sunday, the chassis raffle went very smooth and all five drivers and crew were done and back at their hotels for an early dinner. As practice got underway, all Team USA Senior MAX competitors were looking quick and hopes were high going into qualify-

ing. During qualifying, it was Phil DeLaO who put in the best performance to qualify tenth. This would see him starting on the third row in all three of his heat races. Others didn’t fare as well, but with their ability to race, we knew they could come through the pack in the heat races. The heat races were a mixed bag for most. Phil DeLaO used good starting spots to move up early. But, eventually he would get shuffled back or knocked off track completely. Phil would line up for the LCQ 11th, but another off course event forced him to miss the finals. Similarly, Andrew Palmer had a week that was very uncharacteristic for him. After not getting the best from his setup in qualifying, Andrew was forced to come from the back in all of his heat races in a kart that didn’t perform like the one he had tested with just a month prior. By the end of the heat races, Andrew didn’t have enough points to make it into the LCQ. As an example of just how tough the fields are at the Grand Finals, one needs to look no further than Andrew’s experience for confirmation of this. Louie Pagano had a few rough spots throughout the heat races. As such he wasn’t able to transfer directly to the finals. For that, he would have to transfer directly through the LCQ, which he did with a fantastic second place. In the pre-final, Louie moved up from 30th to 23rd and looked to capitalize on that form in the final. Unfortunately, the final didn’t go as planned as he lost ground on the long straight, eventually falling back to a 26th place finish. For Sam Beasley and Danny Formal, good performances in

Every year, thousands of teams and drivers choose the Birel chassis in order to run their agonistic activity in National and International classes, contributing with their successes to make this brand one of the most winning and prestigious in the world. Juan Manuel Correa was the fastest Team USA driver in qualifying and finished 22nd the heat races allowed them to head straight to the finals. For Sam, making the finals was a relief. In his past two Grand Finals appearances, he’s been fast enough to run up front, but circumstances kept him out of the finals. This year, ironically, although he never showed as much outright pace as he had in years past, he leaves Portugal with his best result ever after claiming 22nd in the finals. Danny Formal came to the Grand Finals on a high after dominating the U.S. Nationals at JET karting in South Bend, IN. After solid qualifying and heat race performances, Danny would start and finish the pre-final in the 16th spot. In the final, he made his way into the top ten early. Then, as was the case with most of Team USA this year, the kart started to go away and he ended up getting shuffled back. In the end he put on a gritty performance to hold onto 15th position. This would end up being the highest place finish in the finals for any Team USA driver in 2012.

DD2 Team USA’s DD2 contingent boasted a very impressive resume. The lone rookie on the squad was the Rotax Challenge of the America’s champion Fritz Leesmann. The drivers who had qualified through the U.S. Nationals, U.S. National Champion Joey Wimsett, Cody Hodgson and Kristina Vorndran, the 2011 U.S. National Champion, would all be bringing a lot of experience to Portimao for this year’s Grand Finals. After fighting her way onto the podium in South Bend, Kristina Vorndran was really excited to be making her second trip to the

Grand Finals. Anyone who knows Kristina will tell you that nobody takes on a challenge with more enthusiasm than she does. As such, it was disheartening to see the struggles she had to cope with during the week. In the end, a DNF in the second heat put her too far back in the points to make the LCQ and her week ended on Friday. Even through her disappointment, she still managed to find a smile and was back at the track on Saturday to cheer on her teammates. Fritz Leesmann was one of the first members to qualify for Team USA by winning the DD2 championship in the Rotax Challenge of the Americas. Fritz had a difficult start to his week in Portugal as engine problems hampered his performance. On Tuesday, a seized piston caused him to lose valuable track time. After motor problems were sorted out, he was able to get on with the program. He gathered enough points to make the LCQ where he transfered to the finals by taking the last spot. In the finals, he started in the rear but kept working his way forward to an eventual 19th place finish. The remaining two DD2 contenders, Joey Wimsett and Cody Hodgson were in the hunt all week. Joey qualified 11th over all and put in solid heat race drives to start the pre-final in 8th. A strong start to the pre-final saw him move up a few places, but eventually he had difficulties getting the kart to come of the corner as he would have liked and he eventually fell back to 11th. In the final, Joey made a good start but got knocked off the track in turn three. He quickly got back on track but was only able to fight his way back to 16th at the end. It was a tough break for a

Cody Hodgson ran in the DD2 top five until contact with a lap to go dropped him to 29th

GENUINE SPARE PARTS

Alan Rudolph was well inside the DD2 Masters top ten but a curb issue sent him to 17th talented young driver. Cody Hodgson was one to watch all week. His name was at or near the top of the timing screens throughout practice. He used a good setup to qualify sixth overall and consistently ran in the top three except for one session where his axle slid a bit and caused the brake to drag. With strong finished Cody would start the pre-final seventh alongside his teammate Wimsett. Cody attacked the pre-final with disciplined aggression and smartly moved himself up to third at the end. Going into the final, hopes

were high that Cody could win, or at least repeat his podium performance from Egypt in 2009. As the race wore on, Cody was in the top five and firmly in the hunt. Unfortunately, with a lap and a half to go, he was involved in some contact with another driver and the off-course detour knocked him down to a 29th place finish. Although he deserved better, he could be very pleased with his performance and, with a little better luck, Cody could be on the top step of the podium next year in New Orleans. Building Champions from the ground up. Mike Jones ran solidly in DD2 Masters but he too didn’t get a result equal to his speed (19th) Canada’s Ben Cooper. Like Cristiano Morgado had done an hour earlier, Ben won his third Grand Final after also achieving wins in 2008 (Italy) and last year at Al Ain Raceway in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. Ben qualified for the Grand Finals through the Florida Winter Tour and he’ll be headed back that way in January to begin the the defense of his title. At the event after party, it was announced that the 2013 Grand Finals would be hosted at NOLA Motorsports Park in New Orleans, Louisiana. This marks the first time the Grand Finals has come to America and the enthusiasm from Team USA to have the event on home soil was matched by the desire of those from around the world to come to our shores. Another event that had Team USA cheering was the Mojo World Tire Changing Championship

What a weekend for Eddy Tinini. The Italian driver is not used to such a high level, and despite a very strong pace and super driving, he has to come to terms with fitness in the second part of the races. Fourth fastest time in Q2 and 8th in Race 2 are his best results in Macau, but he’s always in the mix helping out his team mates.

Art Grand Prix’ standard bearer Ben Hanley concentrating before race start. The experienced Brit was always among the fastest drivers, leading in several occasions and also grabbing a podium in Race 3. Shame he had a tough ride in Q1 and Q2...

Above, Felice Tiene smiles on the podium with Tom Joyner, but his weekend could have been different... below, the Italian leads on title contender Daiki Sasaki (4), not in his best shape in Macau. The Kosmic driver was at his second kart race of the season (he moved up to Formula racing) reason why he probably lost some sharpness.

posing proper standards to our sport, and also to legendary karting voice Ken Walker for the commentary. Let’s just hope is not the last…

The Race

Coming to Macau, the standings saw Flavio Camponeschi leading the Championship with 75 points, Daiki Sasaki sitting in 2nd (60), Felice Tiene in 3rd (49) and Davide Forè in 4th (47). Inevitably, all eyes were on these four, but the weekend would provide us with the underdog, by the name of Tom Joyner. The British driver had an ace up his sleeve, which no one was aware of. In fact, despite the very good performance in the World Cup for KF2 in Zuera where Tom ended up 4th from 11th on starting grid, his equipment never proved outstanding, until Macau that is! The LH driver opted for a 28mm chassis that turned out to be the perfect choice with the Spec tyres over the distance. Because even in the free practice or qualifying, Joyner’s advantage was not evident.

Going back to racing, not much happened on Thursday and Friday, with both days dedicate exclusively to free practice. Lap times did not tell pretty much anything interesting, but two things were certain: the track surface was not what drivers are used to (the grip level was quite low, and the track layout though seemingly straightforward with several straights and hairpins was made more difficult by few bumps and surface elevation changes); the Special Bridgestone tyres had a toll on some drivers (it’s only the second time in the season the Special tyres are the rubber of choice).

DAY 1 - Joyner Doubles, Camponeschi makes up

Early morning warm-up was followed by qualifying, which saw Max Verstappen stopping the fastest time with 45”599, and Camponeschi and Tiene clocking at one and a half and two tenths off pole respectively.

The first final of the World Championship decisive round started with drama, as Flavio Camponeschi failed to start the engine due to ignition problems. The Italian was nowhere to be seen on starting grid. He was soon searched and found by the TV cameras sitting powerless in his kart while the mechanics tried (unsuccessfully) every last minute trick to have the engine start. Following the pre-race drama, the championship suddenly looked wide open, and at the green lights with clear road ahead Verstappen and Tiene led the pack. In the early stages the Italian looked struggling a little and lost few positions, while Art Grand Prix’ Ben Hanley, Tom Joyner and Spaniard Pedro Hiltbrand were all in the mix fighting for the lead. In the meantime, main title contender Daiki Sasaki had dropped to 10th from 4th on starting grid. Comes lap 4 with Verstappen able to make a slight gap on the followers, and disaster struck for Tiene and a charging Forè in P5 and 6 respectively. The 4-time World

Drama at prefinal start of The first World Championship decisive round. Flavio Camponeschi’s engine fails to start. Champion tried to make his move on turn 8, but Tiene closed the door resulting in a contact which forced Forè to retire and Tiene to carry on with a damaged kart (a bent chassis for the rest of the weekend) three positions down. Verstappen seemed set to grab an easy win, as the fighting behind was full on, but Joyner, Hanley and Hiltbrand didn’t let him go. Particularly the LH driver, who tailed the Dutch for few laps and overtook him on lap 8 pulling away almost effortlessly. Verstappen had to settle for 2nd defending from a charg-

ing Hanley, who had his share of blocking and shutting doors to prevent the Hiltbrand from gaining the position on the last lap. Good performance also by LennoxLamb, 5th after starting 10th, and by his teammate Eddy Tinini who fought hard with Tiene in the early stages ending 8th right ahead of a very impressive Cian Fothergill from Australia, at his first outing abroad with the aggravation of being the first time on Special Bridgestones tyres. Championship standings number 2 Sasaki was not particularly

brilliant finishing only 7th behind his fellow countryman Takashi Kasai, the latter moving up to 5th following 10” penalty inflicted to Hanley for pushing Hiltbrand (the Spaniard did pretty much the same but was not punished by the Stewards). In Race 2, Joyner picked up where he left off hitting a superb double win. The LH driver kept the lead at the start shadowed by Verstappen with Hiltbrand, Hanley and Sasaki also on the look out. Max Verstappen (36) gave a big helping hand to his teammates, claiming pole for Race 1 and fighting always at the top. Left, U18 World Championship paddock style in Macau... very warm and welcoming, but not so comfy for the teams

ing lap. After leading for 2 laps, Joyner got passed by Tiene, soon followed by Hanley, with Lennox and Camponeschi keeping within distance. Few laps later, and a revived Karol Basz joined the mix starting to lap like the fastest drivers after a difficult weekend. The Birel driver spent most of the event trying to find the right set up, and he obviously had it sorted out in the final race by using a lower tyre pressure. By halfway through the race the Polish driver was up to 5th and looking strong, putting pressure on Camponeschi who had too much at stake to risk a scrap with the Pole, the latter moving past on lap 14 for 4th place. With Tiene still within half a second from leader Joyner, and Hanley starting to lose ground, Basz

was through for a well deserved podium place, and two laps later the Art GP driver had to give in also to the new World Champion. Joyner proved once again unbeatable, as Tiene had nothing left and settled for 2nd ahead of Basz, Camponeschi, Hanley, local hero Chang and Davide Forè up from 28th grid start. Camponeschi, protagonist of a very mature performance, was at last crowned World Karting Champion with 119 points. Joyner’s outstanding weekend brought him and LH Racing team a superb vice-Championship title with 103 points, and Felice Tiene saved the day with two positive results on Sunday finals grabbing 3rd in the Championship with 95 points.

Camponeschi, protagonist of a brilliant performance, he is at last crowned as World Karting Champion with 119 points.

lavio Camponeschi dominates in Japan, without winning confirms to be at the top of the event in Macao, with winning pearl Race 2 that explicates all its talent. His story is full of important points for lots of young twenty-year-olds of our time, drivers and non. He has lived and suffered and then got over financial, family and personal problems. Not only sports wise, not only in karting. Today, he is a great man who is living with an awareness of the importance of those around him and those who believe in him so he will be able to go on winning in the future.

Everyone probably would not think about their Boss after such a win. But Roberto Robazzi has done much more then necessary for me, he has changed me. When I arrived in Tony Kart I was a fast driver. But I couldn’t see myself as an “official” driver just yet. He has been the one to give me the right input, point me in the right direction. Whenever you talk to him, whenever you discuss things with him he always

Over these last years I have been racing with the best and I saw that the official drivers were respected on the track, they have a long term vision of the race, they reason out speed and they adapt to each phase of the race. In 2012 I entered for KF2 at WSK and at the Cik European championship and in KF1 I have raced in the World Championship. After my difficulties in the early part of the season, Robazzi pointed out that this year I was out of the games, I raced elsewhere. I maintained the same style as in KF1, but instead I had to compete with the “young drivers” in KF2. I had to change drive style. I had to go back to fighting turn after turn, I had to adapt. The passage to a higher class isn’t just a case of regulations and engine. There is much more thought to it.

In KF1 lots of thing change among the drivers. The respect you give returns to you, everyone is aware of their own potentiality that moment, and if you are the fast-

ers and non. He has lived and suffered and then got over financial, family and personal problems.

And if he does it, you accept it because you know he wants to spur you on, let you do something that he himself has seen that you can do before you realize it yourself. KF2 is a disaster from this point on: they want to stand out at all costs, but often they go about it in the wrong way because there is no overall vision , there is no management of the race. Talking about racing, my mind goes back to the 2011 World Championship in Genk and De Vries’ daring overtaking manoeuvre.

At that moment he was evidently faster, but being in a hurry to overtake he ran into

In times of crises and simulators, do you manage to optimise the necessary working process required for top level racing? Is this sort of work really efficient during a race? It didn’t take me long to see that working in the factory would have been very important

It didn’t take me long to see that working in the factory would have been very important for me. It is not by chance that Marco Ardigò is often with me to work on the KZ. This work not only enables you to be on the ball to deal with the engine, but it also helps you to make decisions... You work on set up and try to optimize it during the season, but if the base is good it remains more or less the same. What changes is the way you adapt to the different tracks and the specific racing conditions that you find at weekends. Today, I am much more aware of what material to use and the effect they have. For a driver this is very important, it is another story.

Intrepid, who was no longer capable of assisting us at high level racing. Morsicani looked to FA chassis, Alonso’s. You were entering the Tony Kart orbit, were you aware of your aims?

I wanted to race, and I was supported by a good team, Morsicani. So we talked to Robazzi too. About the chances of an agreement: material to use, technical support, economical involvement and class to race in. Then Robazzi himself spoke to me giving me reassurance and giving me the impression that he believed in me. This was very important.

Having the right opportunity is also a matter of being the right person, in the right place at the right moment. Has it been easy for a lad from Rome like you, to stand out away from the biggest tracks and factories?

There are more chances in the north of being spotted at the early stages of your career, when it isn’t really you who is deciding. The important tracks are far away and the best teams rarely come down to Rome to practice, imagine if the factories would. However, at first you don’t realise, or at least you don’t know it. After the 60 cc, I raced in the Junior class with Armando Polini, who had a PCR team in Macerata. He taught me a lot and together we got good results that soon after took me to winning the Italian Championship, with Italcorse and Achille Parilla there.

Can such a win change your career?

It has changed mine. It was a very important step for several reasons: from a sports point, we won in 2005 with an Italsistem engine, when back then more modern engines dominated the scene, so everyone realised that we were good. From a personal point, the budget had ended. I had no more money, so the only thing to do was try to do well. My brother Giorgio, who hasn’t been as lucky as me, stopped racing after that race. It would have been good to be with Tony Kart together... In 2006 the International circuit started with an important team, Morsicani Racing.

After the Italian win, we were looking for a team that would allow us to race. At that time Morsicani was looking for a leading driver, to bring back the image of Intrepid. Luckily we met, and we did it, second place at the Open Championship. In the meantime, the team was looking for a new technical partner to take over from

Once again Robazzi, he was already an important figure in your career. Like a chess board, his moves determined yours, even if not directly yet.

Yes, as far as I was concerned, I had to do my best with Morsicani and FA Karting, and in 2007 we managed to get third place at the KF2 World Cup. So, in Ugento, during the last round of the Open Championship round, I took second place, our relationship had made another step forward when he told me that he wanted me in the Tony Kart Junior Team.

any better: chassis, setup, engine and team. I was strongly motivated. Everything worked wonderfully well and in 2008 we won the KF2 European Championship and the WSK. A fantastic year. And at the end of the season, another meeting with Robazzi, and here we have a TonyKart official driver.

At times it doesn’t seem true that I am at Tony Kart, in Prevalle, far from Rome. If the sports change over has changed after having won the Italian championship, I saw that personal experience predominate on the racing component. The year 2009 was an important year because we took the KF2 World Championship, but a year to be forgotten because of being disqualified. In 2010 while I was still under shock for the loss of my father. He had taught me everything. What I am now is thanks to my father and I am proud of what I have achieved. With him, an amateur driver, my brother and I started driving and managed to do quite well. Obviously, I miss him very much. But these have been two blows that have taught me that the psychological aspect is very important in a race. As a person, you have to learn from your mistakes, and then grow and gain in confidence. Today, I try to bear in mind all my positive and negative experiences, and it is thanks to Mr Robazzi that I have changed both on the track and off the track. Today, I want to go on winning; I certainly won’t stop with this World Championship. I have a better prospective and I am more mature mentally and this helps me to aim for the best.

Camponeschi, the driver, knows that he has won on the track. The man, Camponeschi, will soon be aware of what he has achieved in life. And if wounds still hurt a bit, soon he himself will be talking about it with pride. Aware that he can be a great example.

You wouldn’t be working directly with Robazzi, but you were a breath away. And yet, it was another challenge to face, the Junior Team is the English team managed by Paul Spencer. How did you get on with the language difficulties?

It was difficult at first to communicate, but Paul helped me. At the start of the season I wasn’t very fast, then we sort of clicked and in April I was determined to do well in the most important races, so in the end things just couldn’t have gone
