dune plan form determined The site of the central plaza was in the past, an interdunal area consisting of a freshwater pond and salt slough. The area to the south was primarily dune sand (foredunes) and the towards the bay were sand dunes. These conditons were replaced by artificial fill for faciliting the Exposition and later Crissy Field.

The process and resulting form of the dunes reflect upon their constant shifting action, while their planted finish represents the static condition of fore/grey dunes . The stone water feature abstracts the subsurface movement of water through the substrata, where tectonic forces have created a layered geology. The resulting ‘stream’ running along the pathway into Crissy field, directs focus towards the restoration of dunes taking place along the bay.

Alongside the restored airfield, the plaza abstracts another aspect of the (natural) history of the site to complete the sequence of public spaces built around the movement of stormwater - from the stables to the bay.

The graph chronologically tracks the magnitude of air toxic releases by the four major polluters in the vicinity of the site. It tracks major trends and events from 1993 till 2006 ( period in which comparable records were available)., with conjectural inputs for NSP, demonstrating the magnitude of pollution it might have released if functional; and for Xcel energy in 2007- 08, when it shifted to natural gas for the production of electricity.

Master plan proposals for the Hiawatha corridor and the adjacent neighborhoods were proposed, followed by each team of four designing a stretch of the site, either demonstrative or addressing the specific conditions existing. The proposals involved accounting for growth strategies, and phasing strategies for the projects, and addressing key environmental issues in an area of historically intense industrial activity. project statement site context

To the west, stormwater will flow from Hiawatha Avenue and the LRT line into open concrete channels and under the noise berm. It will empty into a series of first flush ponding areas, where sediment and nutrients will drop out.

Underground catchment will allow for slow infiltration of water into the site and greywater uses.
