hree new World Karting Champions were crowned this autumn despite the presence of an always active virus. Let us congratulate the British drivers Freddie Slater (OKJ) and Callum Bradshaw (OK) who have completed the list of winners started by the Frenchman Jeremy Iglesias in KZ. Many other champions have been rewarded in their country or in their region and 2020 will remain marked by unforgettable satisfaction for them and their teams. Like motor sport, karting demonstrated this year that it is capable of adapting quickly to a new context by taking its responsibilities seriously. Most of the competitions in the second half of the season were able to take place without putting their participants at additional risk. This is undoubtedly the positive point to bear in mind at

the end of the year. Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s year could be cited as an example. Crowned FIA Karting European Champion in OK at the age of 14, the young Italian hopeful had to retire at the start of the World Championship Final, his leg fractured in an unavoidable accident. He faced this painful event with courage and equanimity and is working to regain his physical condition to compete in OK next year. He is also thinking about his future career in single-seater racing, full of promise and progress step by step. We take this opportunity to convey our sincere wishes for his recovery. At a time for assessment, perhaps it would be appropriate for once to abstain from it. Everyone is in a position to draw their own conclusions according to their place, their

expectations, their difficulties and their successes. Everyone will agree that the 2020 season was extraordinary, in the original meaning of the word, in that it was not ordinary. Everything has been different and complicated, it’s a fact and we can’t do anything about it. The prospects for 2021 are still shrouded in uncertainty about the health situation, but the horizon is not irredeemably bleak. Yet everyone has a role to play in adversity. It is up to us that next season will be more positive than expected, even if it means showing more adaptation, the primary quality of humanity. Good luck to all and a very happy holiday season!

Ronni Sala made no secret of his joy at welcoming Alessio Piccini to the Birel ART Racing Team: “Alessio will be our new official KZ2 driver for the 2021 season together with others confirmed drivers. THE 2021 RACING CALENDAR The provisional racing calendar for WSK Promotion’s 2021 Karting campaign has been devised. It features 11 events plus the Winter Tests that will take place on January 23-24 in Adria. JAMES WHARTON JOINS ALL ROAD MANAGEMENT

A talented and very promising driver, James Wharton has joined All Road Management’s driver development scheme, allowing him to turn an important corner for the future of his career.

J

ames Wharton is a 14 year old Australian kart driver who has competed internationally this year for his first season in the premier class, OK, as part of the official team of the Parolin Racing Kart factory. “Over the past few years, All Road Management has taken two young drivers

under its wing who have made a name for themselves in karting, Caio Collet and Gabriele Mini,” said Nicolas Todt, founder of All Road Management. “The selection of James Wharton is part of this strategy. We have been able to appreciate his driving qualities and his great competitiveness on many occasions. We believe in his potential for the years to come and we

will do our utmost to enable him to prove himself.” “It is very satisfying for me to join All Road Management, which supports so many prestigious drivers. I would like to thank Nicolas Todt very much for trusting me and believing in me. It motivates me even more for the rest of my career,” says James Wharton. GRAND PRIX ARENA 45 The first edition of the Grand Prix Arena 45 could not take place as planned in 2020 because of the Covid-19 pandemic. Nevertheless, Didier André and his partners remain on course for 2021. Remember the date: the Grand Prix Arena 45 will take place in Valence on 7th and 8th August.

he Grand Prix Arena 45 is a major international competition open to all for the X30 Senior and X30 Junior categories. It is based on the IAME Series France regulations. This is a great opportunity to challenge the best drivers in the world on an exceptional track, the prestigious La Roche de Glun circuit in Valence. In addition to a high-level sporting confrontation, the Grand Prix Arena 45

FFSA 2021 LICENCES The 2020 season is coming to an end and we are already looking forward to the start of the new season. Since Monday 14th December 2021, licensees or future licensees have been able to apply for a FFSA licence for the 2021 season on licence.ffsa.org.

IN THIS CONTEXT, SEVERAL NEW ELEMENTS ARE TO BE TAKEN INTO CONSIDERATION: g Having taken into account the numerous

cancellations of events in 2020 due to the pandemic context, the FFSA has decided to offer the 2021 licence (excluding the AS fee) : to holders of a coaching licence in 2020

(with the exception of the EIPS licence) holders of a competition licence in 2020 who have not participated in an event in 2020 provided that this licence is applied for in the same AS, for the same licence as in 2020

and during the period from 14/12/2020 to 31/03/2021. To benefit from the offer, the licence holder must go through their personal area (licence.ffsa.org) to apply for the licence. Please note that this offer cannot be used for a licence taken out via the club area on behalf of a licence-holder who is a competitor. The other new element concerns the digitisation of training participation certificates via the e-licence site. As with licences, participants will be able to get their training certificates from their personal space on licence.ffsa.org.

MOTOR SPORT COUNCIL OF 16 DECEMBER 2020 The World Motor Sport Council met in Geneva on 16 December 2020. The following decisions concerning karting were adopted:

anta was selected as exclusive supplier of fuel in the 2021 FIA Karting Championships – Europe (except Superkart).

KG s.a.s. was selected as exclusive supplier of a CIK-FIA homologated front fairing mounting kit in the 2021, 2022 and 2023 FIA Karting Championships, Cups and Trophies

(except Superkart). Regarding the exclusive supply of tyres in the 2021 FIA Karting Championships (except Superkart) it was decided to launch a revised invitation to tender to select an exclusive supplier of tyres for season 2021 of all FIA Karting Championships (except Superkart).

EVOLUTION OF THE SODIKART RACING

TEAM IN 2021

From January 2021, Sodi Racing Team will take on a new dimension, in order to pursue its development objectives in the international KZ / KZ2 / OK-J / Mini CIK categories.

In KZ, the two official drivers Sodikart Bas Lammers and Adrien Renaudin will be in charge of the development of the equipment under the direct responsibility of Julien Dexmier.

This new organisation will allow better exchanges between the drivers, their mechanics and the team managers, as well as a pooling of technical and logistical resources, in order to be even more effective.

he KZ and KZ2 categories will from now on be grouped together within the same structure, with the aim of pooling knowledge and sharing skills to increase performance. The Sodi Racing Team will therefore ensure even closer collaboration with the CPB Sport

team. The two Team Managers, Julien Dexmier for Sodi Racing Team and Kevin Petit for CPB Sport, will continue to supervise their respective drivers, while enabling them to exchange information more efficiently.

PAROLIN RELAUNCHES

IN KZ WITH CELENTA

For its return to the gearbox categories, Parolin Racing Kart has chosen to put it’s faith in the talent and experience of Francesco Celenta. The Italian driver has many top results in KZ and KZ2 on his record, notably acquired with Parolin a few years ago.

arco Parolin said: “We are delighted to officially return to the KZ category. In recent years we have worked hard to establish our reputation in other categories, from Mini to OK. Minime by being among the best in his first full national season. A combative driver showing a surprising maturity for

his age, he revealed great potential with impressive perseverance and consistency.


Matthéo started the season with a victory at the Open Kart in Salbris. His good performance at the Trophée Kart Mag in Mirecourt finally allowed him to take the lead in the national Stars of Karting series after the countback. The French Endurance Vice-Champion, Matthéo also took 2nd place in the NSK championship, 2nd place in the IAME Series France ranking as well as at the end of the Stars of Karting and a superb 16th place in the IAME Euro Series in Aunay. In 2021, he will take on a new important challenge by entering the higher category, the Cadets, where he will be one of the youngest. Matthéo Dauvergne insisted on thanking the partners who are supporting him in his journey: Energy France, S2MH, SA VTP, Prévost Fuel and SA DR.

Tom Martinez, viceChampion of France in Endurance, succeeded beyond expectations in his debut in the Minime category with three podiums. Malone Vinot has completed a great achievement considering his eight years of age by finishing 3rd in the IAME Series France in Varennes and mounting the podium five times.

Thibaut Martinet and Alexandre Porcheto, 8th in the overall standings of the IAME Series France, also shone in the colours of Galaxy Compétition while making good progress. The 2021 season is already in the sights of Galaxy Competition with training in sight for the team’s recruits in order to be at the top in the opening competitions next year.

François Sanson, the team manager of Galaxy Compétition, did not hide his satisfaction: “The season has been very positive for a team that is only two years old, but can rely on a great experience of racing. The performances of Matthéo and the other drivers proved that our approach was effective thanks to our engine partner FF Engines. We also work closely with Energy Corse and Tony Kart France for the development of the equipment. Matthéo has helped us well during numerous test sessions. “Galaxy Compétition invests a lot in the training of young drivers by adapting to each personality and by valuing the qualities of each driver. Only a relationship based on trust with the youngsters and their families allows us to put in place all the elements for success. For me, coaching is a priority in parallel with a long-term vision. I have no problem with the fact that Matthéo was not rewarded with a big

KARTING CALENDAR Due to the latest developments in the health situation in France and taking into account its economic consequences, the CNK and the FFSA’s karting department have presented the new calendar for the coming season.

hile waiting for the ambitious action plan carried out by the Federation and its karting service concerning the return of the FFSA Grand Prix and the introduction

of the new FFSA OK category to 2022, the calendar of the French Sprint Championships has been modified by the National Karting Commission, while keeping the dates and tracks already

chosen. Five events have therefore been scheduled to ensure two meetings per category, except for Handikart, Women and Junior.

FELIPE MASSA PRESIDENT OF CIK-FIA

Very involved in his role as President of the FIA International Karting Commission, Felipe Massa was determined to meet the different players in the 2020 FIA Karting Competitions, first during the European Championship - OK & Junior in July, then in Italy at the World Championship - KZ. Despite the tight schedule between August and November, the Brazilian was pleased with the success of the current racing season. This season, almost all FIA Karting Competitions were maintained. What do you think of the way the CIK-FIA has dealt with the problems related to the Covid-19 pandemic? - During these last months, which have been marked by an unprecedented pandemic and a lockdown of several weeks, the CIK-FIA has taken the right decisions so that the FIA Karting Championships can resume and take place in the optimum conditions. In collaboration with the various organisers, the changes in dates

have been judicious. I think that all the people involved in our Competitions were very happy to see that the four European Championships, the World Championship - KZ, the International Super Cup - KZ2 and the entire Academy Trophy could be organised with the success we have seen. The racing was excellent. Of course, we regretted the absences of some Drivers. This was most often the consequence of the difficulties encountered by several of them in moving from one country to another. In spite of this, the CIK-FIA was delighted to have welcomed, for example, 75 Junior Drivers at the European Championship

in Germany and even 99 Drivers in KZ2 at Lonato. I salute the efforts of all these participants from dozens of different nationalities, who made a point of taking the start of these Competitions. Today I am looking forward to the FIA Karting World Championship - OK & OK-Junior in Portimao.

What feedback did you receive after the release of the 2021 calendar, which was announced as early as last June? - For the organisers and ASNs, it is important to find out quickly whether their bid has been successful, so that they can prepare as well as possible to host an FIA Karting Championship. Even if the situation of Covid-19 is unfortunately not yet stabilised, we must work for the future. The drivers want to continue racing, the factories and the teams want to be able to work and have a future.

Enthusiasm for karting remains strong. Of course, it is difficult to predict the evolution of the pandemic and we can only hope for a rapid improvement in the situation. I am thinking in particular of the FIA World Championship Karting OK & Junior in Brazil in October 2021. For the Europeans, it is a long trip that needs to be planned in advance.

Are you satisfied with the work carried out by the promoter RGMMC? - James Geidel and his team are working hard to ensure the success of the FIA Karting Championships. We all regret not being able to welcome spectators, but RGMMC makes every effort to ensure quality video streaming. As I wanted, we are also improving the karting audience through social networks. The world of communication is changing and we have to adapt. In addition, our promoter and the CIK-FIA have spent a lot of energy to enforce the strict infection control protocol we have put in place. As soon as the FIA Karting Championships resumed, everyone’s health was a constant concern for us. It is our duty to ensure the safety of those present on the circuits.

You wanted to make some changes to the regulations. Have they achieved their goal? - Thanks to the discussions I had with factory and team managers, as well as with Drivers, it seemed important to me to make the Competition fairer. Ensuring the greatest possible sporting fairness is an aspect that is dear to me in this sport. In addition to my role as President of the CIK-FIA, I am also a competitor. I feel very strongly about the remarks expressed by those who

experience the competition on a daily basis. At the end of 2019, we changed the management and the quota of tyres used during the meeting. Recently, we have rethought the Qualifying Practice classification, taking into account the differences in time between the groups. These changes have been very well accepted. Among the decisions taken, I also recall the postponement of chassis homologations to 1st January, 2022, to take the Coronavirus crisis into account.

The World Championship - KZ brought together a wide range of drivers: young talents, Drivers who come to enjoy themselves like Antonio Fuoco and the four-time World Champion Davide Foré... How does this inspire you? - It proves that karting is a fantastic sport, which can be practised at almost any age, whether as a leisure activity or at the highest level. Some drivers have not had the opportunity to switch to cars or have simply wished to stay in karting. In the 125cc gearbox categories, they have a great opportunity to express their talent. Several young karting hopefuls will become professional drivers in cars, but others have managed to achieve this status in karting. This is also very rewarding. The KZ Final was also very intense thanks to these experienced drivers.

Finally, you witnessed a scene that should not exist on a karting circuit. What was your reaction? What happened in Lonato was serious. A World Championship should give a positive image of karting. This kind

of event is contrary to the spirit of our sport. It is not an example for young people. I immediately wanted the FIA to communicate on this subject and launch an investigation into these incidents. In Italy, ACI Sport has already taken the first sanctions. The CIK-FIA will also be responsive to these facts. In the end, I think it is important to congratulate the Drivers who have been crowned in Italy in 2020 and to remember their names: Frenchman Jérémy Iglesias (KZ), Italian Simone Cunati (KZ2) and American Connor Zilisch (Academy), without forgetting Israeli Ariel Elkin, winner of the last round of the Academy Trophy.

UGOCHUKWU DOMINATES THE FINALS

rando Badoer (KR/Iame) was the fastest in Qualifying ahead of Arvid Lindblad (KR/Iame) and Ugo Ugochukwu (KR/Iame). The trio was then reversed as Lindblad took over the lead in the heats, with Badoer 2nd and Ugochukwu 3rd. The situation changed in favour of Ugochukwu in the Prefinal, which he won against Rashid Al Dhaheri (Parolin/TM) and Tymoteusz Kucharczyk (RK/ TM). After a short battle with Lindblad at the beginning of the Final, Ugochukwu took off and won with a lead of more than 3.5�. The battle was intense between the chasers. Al Dhaheri took 2nd place after a fine battle with Christian Ho (KR/Iame). Rintaro Sato (Kosmic/Vortex) and Freddie Slater (Kosmic/Vortex) completed the top five.

SUPERB WINNING FINAL FOR AMAND

A

ndrea Kimi Antonelli (KR/Iame) was one of the favourites after his pole position in the Qualifying session and his domination in the heats. Lorenzo Travisanutto (Parolin/TM) was back in 2nd position, followed by Rafael Camara (Exprit/TM) and James Wharton (Parolin/TM). The surprise came from Nikita Bedrin (Tony Kart/Vortex) in the Prefinal. The Russian driver regained no less than 13 places to take the victory against Luigi Coluccio (Kosmic/Vortex) and Camara. The tyre management changed the situation in the Final. Camara led for five laps until Marcus Amand (KR/Iame) took over the lead after an impressive 12-place comeback. The Frenchman was in front of Camara, but William Siverholm (Exprit/TM) came back strongly at the end of the race. Amand took the victory in front of Siverholm, Camara finished 3rd by a second, Josep Marti Sobrepera (KR/Iame) was 4th in front of Callum Bradshaw (Tony Kart/Vortex).

JAMES WHARTON AMONG THE BEST AT PORTIMAO! Between the two events of the 2020 Champions of the Future series held three months apart, James Wharton’s progress has been spectacular. In the south of Portugal, the Australian hopeful showed he was capable of competing with the best in the difficult OK category. Despite an obvious lack of success in the final phase, the driver from the Parolin Racing Kart team was reassured about his level of performance a few days before the World Championship.

J

ames Wharton, who is competing in the OK class this season, is getting ready to take part in the most important competition of the season: the World Championship. Once again, the World Championship promises to be very difficult and challenging, with a large number of competitors. 77 drivers are expected to take part at the Portimao circuit from the 5th to the 8th November. “It is important to prepare as well as possible for this event,” says the young Rookie, just out of the Junior class. “The second and final round of the Champions of the Future series was an ideal opportunity to check the competitiveness of the equipment and to test myself against the competition, as it took place on the same track in the south of Portugal.”

MAGNIFICENT PERFORMANCES IN THE HEATS In Timed Practice, James Wharton confirmed his speed by setting the 3rd fastest time of his group, which put him in 8th position overall. After that, his progress in the Qualifying Heats proved to be remarkable, with a clear round during these four races. “The Parolin chassis, our technical team, the TM Racing factory as well as our engine tuner did a very good job and it was great to fight at the front in all of the heats. I even won one of them with an excellent start, but unfortunately I fell back three places due to a penalty for a bad position of the front fairing.” James Wharton found himself in an excellent 4th place after the heats.

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP IN THE LINE OF FIRE At the beginning of the Prefinal, James quickly managed to get ahead of his team-mate Lorenzo Travisanutto, a reference in the OK category with his two World Championships and a European Championship. Unfortunately, a few laps later, he retired, the consequence of a crash in the middle of the leading group. He had started the Final with the firm intention to move back up, but this time, he had a mechanical problem, forcing him to retire with many regrets. “In this race, the possibility of getting on the podium really existed. This incident in the Prefinal really frustrated me, because I had saved my second set of new tyres for the Final. But we have to stay positive. Both Lorenzo and myself proved that the Parolin team was working in the right direction in Portimao. The equipment we have developed together in the last few weeks is performing well and this makes me optimistic for the World Championship. We will have to be determined and ambitious, but without making mistakes.”

The Champions of the Future series held at Portimao was the perfect time to hold a final rehearsal in optimal conditions before the FIA Karting World Championship in the OK and OK-Junior categories. This was on the minds of all the drivers, who gathered a lot of information in preparation for the biggest event of the season. In terms of results, Polish driver Timoteusz Kucharczyk proved to be the top representative of the official Birel ART Racing team.

our weeks after a memorable world meeting at Lonato, which ended with a double victory in KZ2 and the title of Vice-Champion in KZ, the Birel Art team attacked this second and last event of the Champions of the Future series with the same determination. “Whether they are young, capable of aiming for a top ten or looking for experience, our objective is

to support our drivers to the maximum and provide them with high-performance equipment. Another of our roles is to assist the different teams that use the chassis brands manufactured by our factory,” said Luca Filini, team manager at Birel ART.

OK-JUNIOR: MAGNIFICENT PROGRESS FOR KUCHARCZYK In Portimao, Poland’s Timoteusz Kucharczyk wore the colours of the RK chassis dear to his compatriot Robert Kubica brilliantly. Three times 2nd and once 1st in the Qualifying Heats, the Pole finished 3rd in the Prefinal and was firmly in this position in the Final, when jostling in the pack pushed him back into 8th position. He regained two places in the Final and finished 6th, as well as a brilliant 5th in the overall classification of the Champions of the Future series in OKJunior. Unlucky in Timed Practice, Karol Pasiewicz wasn’t able to express himself as he would have liked, whereas Aurelia and Ethan Nobels discovered the high international level with interest.

OK: 17-PLACE CLIMB FOR BERTUCA In the extreme south of Portugal, the Birel ART brand was particularly well represented, with 10 chassis entered in the OK category. Numerous clashes during the heats often hindered the progress of the team’s drivers. The Italian Cristian Bertuca did best with a remarkable comeback to 7th position, after starting 17th. The technical and strategic choices made by his team have been judicious. On the other hand, success wasn’t often there in Portimao for Enzo Trulli, who hasn’t raced much in 2020, or Thanapongpan Sutumno, Maya Weug and Matheus Morgatto. The latter was nevertheless able to reach the top four in the Qualifying Heats, but had too many problems to get a good result.

STRONG PERFORMANCES IN OK AND A PODIUM IN JUNIOR BEFORE THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS A week before the World Championship, the second event in the Champions of the Future series was set to be a dress rehearsal on the Kartodromo do Algarve in Portimao. The Parolin Racing Kart team confirmed a high level of performance in both categories with Travisanutto’s return to the forefront in OK and a well-deserved podium for Al Dhaheri in OK-Junior. The best drivers in the world were among the 164 entered and the confrontation between the contenders was fierce.

t has been an excellent opportunity from RGMMC to be able to take part in a preparation race just before the World Championship”, said Marco Parolin. “We can be very satisfied with the performance of our equipment. The work has paid off. In OK, Travisanutto found his feet and Wharton was very competitive. They were both in a position to fight for victory. Al Dhaheri made superb progress in Junior with a very nice 2nd place in the Final as a well deserved reward. Rinicella also had a strong card to play, whereas Dodds’ problem in Qualifying prevented him from shining. That said, we are aware that there are still some things that need to be improved and we will work hard on them before the start of the world meeting.”

Everybody was happy to see Lorenzo Travisanutto back to his best for the first time this year. His collaboration with Parolin was very effective during the whole competition. After setting the 6th fastest time, he came back to 2nd position after the heats. It is a pity that he was penalised for his start in the Prefinal. 4th on the finish line, he was ranked 23rd. His comeback of 15 places in the Final proved that he was able to aim for victory. James Wharton did a great job during the heats by taking 4th place out of the 75 participants. Unfortunately, he was forced to retire twice in the Final stages. Miguel Silva started too far back to qualify, but his last two heats revealed interesting potential.

Rashid Al Dhaheri took an important step in OK-Junior. INTENSE BATTLES BEFORE VICTORY FOR SLATER

rando Badoer (KR/Iame) had taken pole position on Friday on a dry track, but then he was a protagonist in the heats like Christian Ho (KR/Iame), Evan Giltaire (Sodi/TM), Ugo Ugochukwu (KR/Iame) and Tymoteusz Kucharczyk (RK/TM). As the rain came back on Sunday morning, Ho was in the lead of the heats in front of Ugo Ugochukwu and Freddie Slater (Kosmic/Vortex). The “slow” procedure slowed down the Final because of a massive incident immediately after the start. Slater had already taken the lead and broke away, but Arvid Lindblad (KR/ Iame) made up the gap and attacked him, followed closely by Ho. Lindblad took the advantage at the end of the race, but Slater fought until the end and won at the last corner. After a spoiler penalty for Lindblad, Tuukka Taponen (Tony Kart/Vortex) was 2nd with a gain of seven places. Still in the leading group, Harry Burgoyne (KR/Iame) took 3rd place on the podium, ahead of Ho and Lindblad. At only 12 years old, Freddie Slater was crowned World Champion, a new success to the credit of the Ricky Flynn Motorsport team.

BRADSHAW ON TOP IN THE RAIN OF THE FINAL

M

atheus Morgatto (Birel ART/TM) set the fastest time in Qualifying, but it was Taylor Barnard (KR/ Iame) who dominated the heats, while Callum Bradshaw (Tony Kart/Vortex) already showed his advantage in the rain on Sunday morning. Defending champion Lorenzo Travisanutto (Parolin/TM) was in 3rd position, ahead of Pedro Hiltbrand (Tony Kart/Vortex) and Markus Kajak (Tony Kart/ Vortex). From the beginning of the very wet Final, Bradshaw seemed to fly ahead of the race in slow motion. A form of resistance was organised by his team-mates of the Tony Kart Racing Team, first by Hiltbrand, then Joe Turney (Tony Kart/ Vortex). The other competitors couldn’t fight back and many of them sank down the rankings. Bradshaw crossed the finish line with more than 8.5’’ advantage on Turney, Hiltbrand finished 3rd 2’’ further back to offer an incredible triple win in the rain to the greens. Morgan Porter (KR/Iame) was 4th in front of Barnard who could do no better than 5th.

At the end of a tough weekend in Portugal, success rewarded the efforts of the Ricky Flynn Motorsport team with the title of FIA Karting World Champion – Junior which crowned the talent and determination of young British driver Freddie Slater. The joy of a new world victory softened the harshness of a competition held in demanding weather conditions that were not favourable to all the RFM drivers.

T

he 2020 season, interrupted for four months by the pandemic, didn’t allow the British team to prepare its young drivers as it usually does. The technical mastery of the Kosmic chassis and the competitiveness of the Vortex engines prepared by One Engines were still very present, but the lack of driving throughout the year may have been a problem. In this less favourable context, the world title of Freddie Slater is all the more appreciated after the title won by Thomas Ten Brinke last year. The climate in Portimao was very changeable at the beginning of November, with sunny days alternating with long periods of rain. The rain, itself very variable in intensity, caused grip conditions that were often difficult to understand, both for the drivers and for the technicians. The peak was reached on Sunday for the last Qualifying Heats and the Final, where drivers had to face a wet track. More than ever, the selection was made through race incidents: penalties, crashes or retirements. As early as the Qualifying Heats, which were held in light rain, four of the eight RFM drivers distinguished themselves. Dion Gowda took 6th place, Coskun Irfan was 11th, Freddie Slater 17th and Rintaro Sato 23rd among the 89 participants. The

sun quickly dried the track on Saturday and the Qualifying Heats were hectic with many contacts.

SLATER WINS A SECOND WORLD TITLE IN A ROW FOR RFM

just qualified and was eliminated at the beginning, caught in a massive crash on the first lap that led to the “slow” procedure. It was a disappointment for Rintaro Sato who had performed so well the week before on the same circuit during the Champions of the Future series. The Japanese driver managed to win a race while setting the fastest time, but a series of retirements prevented him from reaching the Final. Morgan Carson, Edgar Anpilogov, Tobias Clausen and Lucas Fluxa Cross had started too far back after Qualifying to be able to reduce their gap in the heats.

After just missing the pole position, Freddie Slater started an exceptional course, each time climbing into the top four without making any mistakes. He finished on Sunday morning with a 2nd place and took 3rd place in the classification of the heats with a gain of fourteen positions. He was then able to fight for the victory from the second row of the grid. With his usual determination, he made a very good start in the lead and broke away quickly. But he was caught at the end of the race and had to fight a heroic battle to keep the advantage on the finish line. The battle was won decisively, Freddie Slater was crowned World Champion, a year after the victory of Thomas Ten Brinke. Coskun Irfan had some solid heats before fighting bravely in the pack of the Final. By avoiding the traps, he managed to regain some ground and was close to the top 10 at the finish, which is a very strong result considering the conditions. Dion Gowda had only

Only 11 years old, Maxens Verbrugge was one of the three youngest of the 89 drivers in the World Junior Championship at the beginning of November in Portimao. At the wheel of his KR/Iame from the VDK Racing team, Maxens put in a first-rate performance that made up for the disappointment of having had to retire at the start of the Final after a multikart collision.

I

n only a few days, Maxens was able to learn the lessons from the preparatory race that he had contested in Portugal before the World Championship. However, the Champions of the Future series hadn’t been very successful for the young Frenchman. It was a much faster driver who started the World Championship Qualifying as he set the 3rd fastest time of his group and finished in the overall top 10 on a very wet track. This is a great achievement for a first participation in a World Championship at such a young age.

and qualified among the 36 finalists of his first World Championship. “Overall I am very happy with my performance during this World Championship in Portugal. I showed that I was fast both on the dry and on the wet track. The track in Portimao made the first lap difficult to negotiate, but I managed to avoid taking penalties

by avoiding contact with my opponents. It’s a pity that I lost ground in two of my heats, because I had the potential to qualify in a better position. The incident that took place in front of me on the first lap of the Final eliminated eight drivers in one go and I couldn’t do anything to avoid it.” However, Maxens’ world performance is still very positive as a conclusion to his first international season in OK-Junior. His progress has been constant during this year that has been disrupted by the pandemic. High hopes are in place for the future of the career of this very young driver who is already able to compete with the best.

In the sunny weather on Saturday, Maxens was able to keep up the rhythm during three of his four heats and even finished the day with a remarkable 2nd position. The starts were complicated in Portimao and incidents often occurred on the first lap of each race. For example, Maxens was dropped from 4th to 27th place at the start of his third heat before being able to move up to 21st place. Although the rain made a strong comeback on Sunday morning, Maxens experienced an amazing episode on the formation lap of his last heat. He had started with a spin in the deluge, but he came back to the pits before bravely taking the start in last position. In spite of this worry, which he could have done without, Maxens reached his first goal

JAMES WHARTON A CONVINCING COMEBACK AT THE END OF THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

At the highest international level of karting, James Wharton has just competed in the biggest event of the season’s calendar: the OK World Championship. Arriving at the Portuguese circuit in Portimao with great ambitions, the Australian rookie confirmed his place among the top 20 drivers in the world. After a difficult Qualifying session due to the constantly changing weather conditions, James Wharton was forced to start in 29th position, before moving up to 17th under the chequered flag.

n the World Championship, James Wharton once again demonstrated his speed and fighting spirit. His stay at the magnificent Portimao motorsports complex will remain a very positive one, full of lessons and experience. “As I expected, the standard was very high. 74 drivers were entered in OK, including the best in the world. It is a constant challenge to fight against many drivers who are not in their first year in this category, unlike me. I am only 14 years old and I was still in the Junior class in 2019. Despite everything, I was very fast in all conditions, on a dry track as well as in the rain. The Parolin Racing Kart

team did a great job, as did the engine manufacturer TM Racing.”

UPS AND DOWNS... Very confident after Free Practice on Thursday, James had to face the rain the next day. He confirmed his ease by finishing 2nd then 1st in the two sessions before the Qualifying Practice. Unfortunately, he was the victim of a technical problem at this crucial moment of the meeting. “I found myself in 25th position and this obviously complicated my position in this competition. In the Qualifying Heats,

various incidents disrupted my progress and this caused me to fall to 29th after the four heats. It’s a pity, because my 6th position in the last heat showed that I had a place in the leading group.” On Sunday, the rain was back. James’ group was not one of those to participate in the last Qualifying Heats. “This gave them a small advantage, they were able to do a last rehearsal before the Final with the rain tyres and fine-tune their final settings. In addition, an accident at the beginning of the Final led to a restart. Although the first start allowed me to gain some places, I found myself at the back of the pack after the second start due to a crash. Coming back to 17th place at the finish, knowing that I was 33rd on the second lap, really was the best I could do in these difficult conditions.” For the young Australian hopeful, the 2020 season is coming to an end soon, with some new reflections to prepare for next season in the best circumstances.

BRADSHAW CONCLUDES A SUCCESSFUL SEASON FOR LECONT The quality of the LeCont tyres again played a major role in the perfect running of the OK World Championship in Portimao, despite the particularly difficult and changeable weather conditions in southern Portugal. In both wet and dry conditions, the Italian manufacturer’s tyres enabled all the drivers to perform at an equal level, with performances worthy of the high standard of this world competition. On a sporting level, the Tony Kart Racing Team triumphed with Callum Bradshaw, Joe Turney and Pedro Hiltbrand.

lick tyres on Thursday and Saturday, rain tyres on Friday and Sunday! In Portimao, the vagaries of the Portuguese skies played with the nerves of the drivers and teams, who fortunately were able to count on the constant efficiency of the LeCont tyres. This was confirmed by the manufacturer’s support structure... “We successfully met several technical challenges during this OK World Championship,” says Paolo Bombara, marketing manager at LeCont. “On the one hand, the Portimao circuit

has a fairly abrasive surface, the track is fast with corners that put the slick tyres to the test, with the average lap time being close to 100 km/h. On the other hand, it rained for two days. In both cases, the tyres have shown themselves to be efficient, consistent and identical from one set to the other. As far as the rain tyres are concerned, I would like to underline that we have really taken an important step forward compared to the previous homologation, regardless of the amount of water on the track.”

LECONT CONGRATULATES NEW WORLD CHAMPION CALLUM BRADSHAW On the whole, the favourites were at the forefront of this Championship and the vast majority of the teams had the opportunity to shine at various points of the meeting. The talent of the drivers and small technical adjustments to the conditions made all the difference. At the end of the Final, which was held entirely on a wet track, the Tony Kart Racing Team took the entire podium, with an impressive Callum Bradshaw in the lead. The Briton became World Champion ahead of his compatriot Joe Turney and Spaniard Pedro Hiltbrand. LeCont also wishes all the best to the 2020 European Champion Andrea Kimi Antonelli, who had an accident at the beginning of the Final.

SATISFACTORY 2020 RESULTS FOR LECONT “Everyone will remember this unique year because of the Covid-19 pandemic. It is important to remember that the

World Championship was originally planned to be held in Brazil! When we look at the health situation in the world, we have to admit that the FIA Karting took a wise decision by scheduling this event in Portugal. Obviously, without this crisis, our Rovereto factory would

have produced more tyres, knowing that we were engaged on different fronts at the international level: WSK Euro Series, Winter Cup, Champions of the Future and of course FIA Karting with the OK and OKJunior European Championships, as well as the OK World Championship..


Some events had to be cancelled and many drivers were forced to withdraw from the event due to difficulties in moving from one country to another. However, it is to be welcomed that the season was able to run as smoothly as possible in this context. The protocols put in place proved

to be effective and the events contested were of a very high standard. For our part, we responded professionally and we are pleased to see that our CIK-FIA approved tyres proved their effectiveness.� Although the Covid-19 pandemic naturally

suggests a certain caution, LeCont - with its knowledge and experience - will not fail to participate in the next calls for tenders launched by the FIA and the various ASNs, while remaining ready to respond to the requests of the various private series organisers.

Macéo Capietto has just completed a very good performance in Portugal during a particularly difficult World Junior Championship. He has avoided the pitfalls of the changing weather to reach the 6th position in the Final among the 89 best drivers in the world.

O

n the fast and very technical track of the Kartódromo Internacional do Algarve de Portimão, the FIA Karting World Championship - OK & Junior confronted the participants with complex conditions to manage. After Free Practice started in the dry, the rain came on during the Qualifying Practice. The Qualifying Heats started in the sunshine before ending on a wet track on Sunday, as a prelude to the wet Finals. There were quite a lot of incidents, especially at the start, because of the configuration of the Portuguese circuit and many drivers left their hopes at the edge of the track. 15 French drivers were racing across both categories, a significant number in these times of pandemic. Only four of them managed to reach the Finals and among these finalists, the FFSA Espoir Karting Team France driver Macéo Capietto took the victory as best tricolour representative, entering the Junior world top six.

CAPIETTO, 6TH JUNIOR Well integrated in his new team, the Kosmic Racing Department, Macéo Capietto drove a Kosmic/Vortex kart very similar to the Exprit/Vortex which enabled him to finish on the podium of the FIA Karting Academy Trophy. Fast and combative, he made the most of his 9th fastest Qualifying time to take four good heats in the top four, including one victory. In the deluge of the Final, he fought until the end to regain five places and reach a very rewarding 6th position at the finish line at the conclusion of a very positive season. Two other young French drivers qualified for the Final. Evan Giltaire (Sodi/TM) was at the forefront of the category, starting with his 2nd fastest time, followed by two victories in the heats. Delayed in the last one, he started hopefully in 11th position in the Final, but he was caught in a big crash at the start and came out last after the

first lap. Maxens Verbrugge (KR/Iame) also started well with the 10th fastest time. He managed to qualify despite two problems in the heats, but he had to retire in the same incident as Giltaire at the beginning of the Final.

ROUSSEAU-RICCI QUALIFIES FOR THE FINAL IN OK

Florian Rousseau-Ricci (KR/Iame) was the only one of the five French drivers who took part to qualify among the 36 finalists of the OK World Championship. To do so, he had to gain 10 places during the heats, a great performance for this young driver who is not used to this kind of international competition. Unfortunately, he had to retire very early in the Final.

“This World Championship has been very complicated, partly due to the weather”, commented Christophe Lollier, the National Technical Director. “However, we can be delighted that 15 Frenchmen took part in this high-level event. After a difficult beginning of the season, Macéo Capietto overcame every obstacle which allowed him to show his speed. We are proud of his progress within the French FFSA Espoir Karting Team during this complex year.”

HUGE FRUSTRATION IN PORTIMAO DESPITE HIGH PERFORMANCE Just as the colours of the sky kept changing during the weekend in the south of Portugal, the Birel ART Racing team went through all kinds of emotions during the highly anticipated World Championship in the OK and OK-Junior categories. Whether with the Brazilian Matheus Morgatto in OK or the Pole Tymoteusz Kucharczyk in OK-Junior, the podium was a strong possibility considering the performances displayed during the Qualifying phases. The Finals, which were held in difficult rainy conditions, were unfortunately a real disappointment for every member of the Italian team. See you in 2021...

020 will remain more than ever a unique season because of the pandemic situation. Nevertheless, many competitions were held and the Birel ART factory managed to achieve many successes: two European Championships, a victory in the International KZ2 Super Cup and a 2nd place in the KZ World Championship. In Portugal, the Italian brand was also keen to demonstrate the competitiveness of its chassis in the direct drive categories. “There was no lack of work to prepare for this World Championship”, confirms Luca Filini, the team manager of the Birel ART Racing team. “Thursday’s tests proved that we were on the right track to allow

our drivers to highlight themselves. Then the rain came on Friday, the sun came back on Saturday, and finally the weather deteriorated sharply on Sunday. From then on, the incidents multiplied and the young drivers constantly had to deal with tricky situations. Of course, we are not happy with the final result, because Birel ART is a team that is focused on victory and has all the assets to win the biggest races. In 2020, we will remember our successes in Genk or Lonato more than ever. We will come back even stronger next year to take our revenge in OK and OK-Junior.”

OK: A BLACK SUNDAY FOR THE POLEMAN MORGATTO Matheus Morgatto was a great protagonist in the World Championship. The Brazilian was the fastest of the 74 drivers entered in the OK category during the Timed Practice session. He certainly had a role to play in Portimao, when an incident with another driver caused him to miss his final Qualifying Heat. Forced to start in 15th position, he had a difficult start to the race and was not able to move up beyond 12th place. After flirting with the top 10, his team-mate Cristian Bertuca finished just behind him in 13th position. For his first participation in an FIA Karting event with the Birel ART team, Enzo

Trulli made a remarkable comeback from 35th to 18th place. “We were also hoping for a better result in the Final with Maya Weug,” continued Luca Filini. “The drivers of the Charles Leclerc by Lennox Racing team also had a lot of problems, while Thanapongpan Sutumno just missed his presence in the Final, proof of his progress”.

OK-JUNIOR: KUCHARCZYK IMPRESSES 15th in the Final was certainly not the result that Tymoteusz Kucharczyk was aiming for on Saturday evening. “Saturday was a fantastic day,” said the Polish driver. “In the heats, I finished 2nd three

times and 3rd once. I was in a position to start on the front row in the Final and to fight for the World Championship, when a mechanical problem forced me to retire in the last heat. I had to start the Final in the middle of the pack, where there was a lot of water. The conditions were Dantesque and I did my best.” A member of the Charles Leclerc by Lennox Racing team and brilliant in the heats, Norwegian Martinius Stenshorne finished just behind him. For their first experience at this level, Aurélia and Ethan Nobels learned a lot in the Birel ART team. As for Karol Pasiewicz, he experienced a week to forget, whereas his talent would have deserved a much better result!

At the beginning of November the FIA Karting OK and Junior World Championship concluded a 2020 season disrupted by serious health problems on a global scale. Everyone worked hard to try to make up for the time lost away from the circuits. Well prepared, the Parolin Racing Team approached the major world meeting with serenity, but the Portuguese weather conditions upset its plans. Tranvisanutto held his place among the best in OK, whereas Wharton ensured a nice comeback in the Final. Al Dhaheri made magnificent progress by finishing on the track in 8th position in the OKJunior category.

“W

e are not fully satisfied with the outcome of this World Championship,” said Marco Parolin. “After the great performances of the previous weekend in the Champions of the Future series, we were ready to confirm our strong potential in both categories, but we had to face totally different weather conditions that forced us to fight harder than expected. In the end we managed to place two drivers in the top 10 after

the chequered flag in OKJ and OK, but I can’t deny that we were hoping for a better result in this competition. After bittersweet races like this one, the only thing we want is to get back on the track as soon as possible to work on the next event.”

TRAVISANUTTO AT THE FOREFRONT IN OK Ranked 7th in Qualifying, Lorenzo Travisanutto completed three good races on Saturday, including one victory, and he was able to secure 3rd place at the start of the Final. The wet track wasn’t really favourable for him, but he nevertheless ensured a solid performance in the leading group by finishing in 6th position. James Wharton wasn’t able to defend his chances as he would have liked during the Qualifying Practice and he had to settle down afterwards with a place in the middle of the pack. He didn’t have many chances in the heats, but he managed two good races, including a convincing 6th place in the last one, in the rain. He was in last place on the second lap of the Final and he started a superb comeback on slippery ground and regained 16 places in 15 laps to finish 17th. Portuguese driver Miguel Silva didn’t have an easy task after his 53rd Qualifying time and he couldn’t join the 36 finalists at the end of the heats.

AL DHAHERI CONFIRMS HIS ASCENT IN OKJUNIOR In continuity with the previous weekend, Rashid Al Dhaheri has achieved good results during this World Championship. Only 44th in the Timed Practice sessions, the Emirati driver completed five strong Qualifying Heats, even setting a fastest lap, and he made a spectacular gain of 26 places to qualify 18th. He built his Final on the same pattern. He made a very good start in the rain and was in 10th position from the first lap. He attacked again as soon as the slow procedure was over and kept fighting for 8th position. Unfortunately, a mispositioned spoiler dropped him back to 13th after the finish. Maxwell Dodds showed his usual determination to regain no less than 21 places during the heats and narrowly qualified in 33rd position. The British driver came back even stronger in the Final race, reaching 11th place with four laps to go, a gain of 22 places in 11 laps of the race. He then dropped back down before being heavily sanctioned. The other drivers of the team had different fortunes in the heats and didn’t manage to join the list of finalists. Valerio Rinicella had nevertheless set the second fastest time in his third race, taking 11 places. Giovanni Trentin was consistent, but was penalised in the rain. Guillaume Bouzar still regained 16 places, Maksim Orlov 15 and Jesse Carrasquedo 10.

PB Sport driver Senna Van Walstijn (Sodi/TM) was unbeatable in Castelletto. Fastest in Qualifying in front of Giacomo Pollini (Formula K/TM) and Fabian Federer (Maranello/TM), he won both heats as well as the Prefinal against Federer. Federer managed to take the lead in the Final before

retiring due to a technical problem. Luca Bosco (Birel ART/TM) took over the lead, but Van Walstijn managed to come back to 1st position at the very end of the race, followed by Filippo Berto (Birel ART/TM). Bosco finished 3rd ahead of Aleesandro Buran (Birel ART/Vortex) and Vyacheslav Putyatin (Sodi/TM).

POWELL DOMINATES THE FINAL PHASES

F

lavio Olivieri (Praga/Vortex) was the fastest in Qualifying, but a penalty delayed him in the heats and it was Yuanpu Cui (KR/Iame) who took the lead ahead of Alex Powell (KR/Iame) and Giovanni Trentin (Parolin/TM). Powell took the victory over Rashid Al Dhaheri (Parolin/TM) in the Prefinal. The Jamaican driver imposed his rhythm during the Final and won the race 2” in front of Cui and 6” in front of Trentino. Al Dhaheri finished 4th and Nicola Lacorte 5th.

LAMMERS AT THE FINISH

erasim Skulanov (IPK/TM) took the pole position and led the Qualifying Heats ahead of RenĂŠ Lammers (Parolin/Iame) and Enzo Tarnvanichkul (Energy/TM). The places changed in the leading trio in the Prefinal with victory for Tarnvanichkul ahead of Skulanov and Lammers. After some changes of leaders, Lammers took the lead in the Final and won against Kimi Tani (Intrepid/ TM) and Maciej Gladysz (Parolin/TM). Skulanov finished 4th ahead of Emanuele Olivieri (IPK/TM).

fter having been one of the main protagonists along with Andy Ratel (Exprit), Riccardo Leone Cirelli (Tony Kart) and Andrea Barbieri (TB Kart), ClĂŠment Outran (KR) won the Prefinal and then the Final. In the Final, Oleksandr Bondarev (Tony Kart) took the lead, but Outran overtook in the last three laps to take the victory against Bondarev and Manuel Scognamiglio (Tony Kart). Francesco Marenghi (KR) and Barbieri completed the top five.

he excellent Edoardo Villa (TB Kar), again among the fastest drivers of the weekend, has won for the second time in a row. In the heats, Danny Carenini (Tony Kart) was in the lead, whereas Villa fell down to 9th position due to a penalty. The Prefinal gave Villa the opportunity to come back to 1st place,


ahead of Alessandro Cenedese (KR) and Carenini. The beginning of the Final, however, put Carenini out of contention and he lost a dozen places, whereas Villa quickly took the lead to take the victory, with Valentino Baracco (Kali Kart) in 2nd

place and Brando Pozzi (Top Kart) in 3rd after having taken pole position in Qualifying. 4th position went to Cenedese (Team Driver/KR-Iame) in front of Gianluigi Palego (Tony Kart).

iziano Monza (KR/Iame) took the lead in the Final, Maciej Gladysz (Parolin/TM) took over the lead before Gerasim Skulanov (IPK/TM) led until the finish line. After a penalty he dropped down to 10th position and Gladysz was declared winner ahead of René Lammers (Parolin/Iame) and Monza.

Przyrowsky finished 2nd ahead of Aleksandar Bogunovic (Tony Kart/TM) and Lammers. The 5th place from Gladysz was enough for him to win the classification.

fter the pole position of Rintaro Sato (Kosmic/ Vortex), Arvid Lindblad (KR/Iame) took the lead. But it was the Polish drivers Karol Pasiewicz (Birel ART/TM) and Tymoteusz Kucharczyk (RK/TM) who won the Prefinals. The Final was very hard fought. Lindblad had taken over the lead from Freddie Slater (Kosmic/Vortex), but he protected his position too early and it was Slater who took the victory ahead of Kucharczyk and Pasiewicz.

In 5th, World Champion Slater nevertheless won the WSK Open Cup.

SLATER ENDS THE SEASON WITH ANOTHER SUCCESS IN ADRIA In the last international competition of the strange 2020 season, Ricky Flynn Motorsport continued its harvest of victories by again enabling Freddie Slater to win, when the brand new Junior World Champion took victory in the WSK Open Cup on the Adria Karting Raceway. During a whole week of racing, the double Italian meeting saw the RFM team achieve the two OK-Junior pole positions, with Slater winning a Prefinal and a Final before adding another title to his record.

3 drivers took part in Rounds 1 and 2 of the WSK Open Cup on the last weekend of November. The cold weather at the beginning of the week finally improved and the decisive races on Sunday took place in

the sun, with pleasant temperatures for the season despite a persistent wind. Equipped with Vega tyres this time, the Kosmic/Vortex karts of the RFM team were strong despite the cool ambient temperature, as shown by a double

pole position and the fastest lap of the first race.

A SECOND CROWN FOR KING SLATER Freddie Slater wasn’t the fastest in Qualifying, but he managed to come back to the front every time. Dominant in the heats of Round 1, the young Briton came back to 2nd position in the heats and in Prefinal A before winning a very lively Final. He had to retire in the heats of the second round, but he gained back eight places and won Prefinal A. The second Final proved to be more complicated, but Slater still came back in the top five to secure his WSK Open Cup title by a comfortable margin.


POLE POSITIONS FOR SATO AND CLAUSEN The Dane Tobias Clausen was very consistent in Round 1 and was very close to the top 10 in the Final. He took pole position in Qualifying for Round 2 and won a heat, but he lost some ground in the Prefinal and missed his qualification after a spoiler penalty. The Japanese driver Rintaro Sato confirmed his top speed with the fastest time in Qualifying for round 1 with a time that was to remain the fastest

of the whole competition. Able to race in the top three of the heats, he didn’t entirely succeed in the race situation and finished 16th and 17th in the Finals. After a complicated first round, the British driver Coskun Irfan made up for it in Round 2 and reached 12th position overall. A newcomer to the team, the German Maxim Rehm progressed throughout Round 1, but retired in the Final. Although he was penalised twice for his spoiler in the second round, he finished 21st in the Final. Finally, the double meeting

in Adria wasn’t very successful for the Singaporean Dion Gowda. Apart from a 2nd place in the heat and a comeback of 11 places to 13th in the Final of Round 1, he encountered too many hazards to get a good ranking.

GLADYSZ THE WSK OPEN CUP CHAMPION IN MINI The last international competition of the season, the WSK Open Cup took place as a double meeting from 24th to 29th November on the Adria Karting Raceway. Very solid at the front of the Mini category, Maciej Gladysz won the series classification with a good lead over his opponents. Kai Sorensen did a great job in OK-Junior, and Rashid Al Dhaheri showed good performances.

“T

h ese end-of-season competitions allow us to take some good reference points for the year to come for both the equipment and the drivers,” explained Marco Parolin. “We worked well with Lorenzo Travisanutto in OK before taking a two-month break from racing, which will be put to good use at the factory. On a personal level, the first race for the young Kai Sorensen in OKJunior was extremely positive. Maciej Gladysz finished the year on a high note by winning the Championship in the Mini category. The outcome of this WSK Open Cup is therefore completely satisfactory for us!”

GLADYSZ CLOSES THE SEASON WITH A TITLE IN MINI Already 3rd in the WSK Super Master series, and recently ranked 3rd in the Andrea Margutti Trophy, the young Polish driver Maciej Gladysz obtained his first big international success in Adria by winning the WSK Open Cup. He first won his Prefinal and the Final of the first round after setting the fastest lap in the race, then he took pole position in the second round before finishing 2nd

in the Prefinal and securing a top five Final that guaranteed him the victory in the Championship, in front of 60 international participants. Colombian Matias Orjuela showed serious potential when he returned to Europe at the end of the season. 7th in the Andrea Margutti Trophy, he took 13th place in the Final of round 1 in Adria and finished 16th in the Championship. The Frenchman Hugo Martiniello discovered the category in Adria and managed to qualify for the Final of Round 2.

PROMISING START IN JUNIOR FOR SORENSEN

After a promising season in Mini, culminating in 5th position in the WSK Euro Series with the Parolin Racing Team, American Kai Sorensen discovered OKJunior in the WSK Open Cup. Very fast, he drove some good Prefinals and even took a top five in the Final of Round 1, which brought him close to the top 10 in the classification of the series.


BADLY REWARDED PERFORMANCES FOR AL DHAHERI As usual, Rashid Al Dhaheri was competitive in OK-Junior throughout the week. He showed all his talent in the top five of the two Prefinals. Unfortunately,

a penalty for overtaking under a yellow flag and a dropped spoiler didn’t allow him to get the results he was expecting in the Finals and he finished 14th in the series, although the top 10 has been well within his reach. Valerio Rinicella was one of Parolin’s assets in Adria. He registered a

progression of 10 places to 15th place in the first Final, but a clumsy move in Round 2 didn’t allow him to continue until the end. Running in the top 10 of Round 1, Giovanni Trentin performed less well in Round 2. Finally, Jesse Carrasquedo could be satisfied with his two Final qualifications which led him to the edge of the first half of the fie

ian Shields (KR-Sport) took the lead among the 63 drivers, followed by Alejandro Lahoz (Kart Republic Spain) and Clayton Ravenscroft (KRSport). In the Qualifying Heats, the drivers had a very close battle. Lewis Gilbert (Strawberry Racing) finally took the lead over Oli Pylka (Dan Holland Racing) and then Ravenscroft. The Prefinal, which was held on dry tarmac, was won by Mark Kimber (Strawberry Racing) in front of Connor Jupp (Fusion Motorsport), Alessandro Ceronetti (Strawberry Racing) and Mathilda Olsson (Strawberry Racing). Kimber kept the advantage in the Final in front of Ceronetti, Louie Westover (Dan Holland Racing) and Morgan Porter (Kart Republic Spain). Kimber then increased the gap in the lead, followed by Porter and Jupp, with Westover losing ground. At mid-race, Porter briefly took the lead, but Kimber took back the 1st place, relayed by Jupp and Westover. The end of the race was a spectacular duel between Westover and Jupp. The latter made his attack in the penultimate lap and crossed the line as winner. Westover had to settle for 2nd place in front of Kimber, Gilbert and Porter.

X30 JUNIOR

WALKER IN THE RAIN

W

illiam Macintyre (KR-Sport) set the fastest time of the 51 drivers, followed by Oliver Greenall (Fusion Motorsport) and Alessandro Giusti (Victory Lane Karting). Greenall led after the heats with two victories, against Macintyre and Sonny Smith (KR-Sport). Greenall maintained his lead in the Prefinal in difficult track conditions to take the pole position in the Final ahead of Macintyre and Freddie Spindlow (KR-Sport). The track was still slippery in some places for the Final. On lap 4, the race was upset when leaders Greenall, Aaron Walker (Strawberry Racing) and Spindlow left the door open for Smith who passed for the lead and pulled away. The chase was on: Walker and Spindlow caught up with the leader in a nice three-way fight. The rain started to pour down on lap 12, making the race very difficult on slicks. Walker managed to make the most of it by taking the lead until the race was interrupted by the officials. Walker was declared winner ahead of Spindlow and Lorens Lecertua (LLK Belgium), Smith was 4th and Kanato Le (Fusion Motorsport) completed the top five.

ROBINSON WINS NARROWLY

S

acha Van’t Pad Bosch (Fusion Motorsport) took pole position ahead of his team-mates Leo Robinson and Cathal Clark. Starting in 9th position, Ethan Jeff-Hall (Strawberry Racing) was the revelation of the heats where he was in front of Nathan Tye (Oliver Rowland Motorsport) and Van’t Pad Bosch. Jeff-Hall maintained his rhythm during a rainy Prefinal, with Clark and Tye taking 2nd and 3rd places. The Final was able to take place on a nearly dry track. A double battle for the lead began quickly between JeffHall and Tye, closely followed by Zachary Knight (Oliver Rowland Motorsport) and Van’t Pad Bosch. Van’t Pad Bosch was then involved in the fight against Tye and JeffHall, whose defensive driving also allowed other drivers to get closer. No less than six contenders battled it out for the victory and there were several changes of leaders in the last laps. Robinson had the last word, by a narrow margin, on Van’t Pad Bosch and Tye! Jeff-Hall had to settle for 4th place in front of Knight.

hristopher Feghali (LBN - KR - DHR) had a perfect competition in Micro. The Final victory confirmed his talent, expressed without fail from his pole position in the Qualifying. Three times winner in the heats, victorious in the Prefinal, he took the victory in the Final after a spectacular battle. But the competition was tough with Jacob Ashcroft (GBR - KR - Dan Holland Racing), Mees Houben (NLD - Exprit - GKS Lemmens Power) and Max Sadurski (NLD - Energy) who were tough opponents.

SKJELTEN OF LATVIA AT THE FINISH LINE

H

arry Hannam (AER - MS Kart - DHR), the leader of the Qualifying Heats, Ethan Jeff-Hall (GBR - Tony Kart - Strawberry Racing) winner of the Prefinal, and also Thomas Strauven (BEL - Tony Kart - Strawberry Racing) and Alexander Skjelten (LVA - Birel ART - National) often occupied the front positions. Jeff-Hall and Skjelten battled it out for victory in the Final on a nearly dry track, and it was Skjelten who took the victory over Hannam and Strauven.

BRITISH DRIVER GUINCHARD WINS BEFORE THE RAIN

W

illiam Macintyre (GBR - Kosmic - KR Sport) took the lead in Timed Practice and then in the heats against Aaron Walker (GBR - Tony Kart - Strawberry Racing) and Freddie Spindlow (GBR - Kosmic - KR Sport). A crazy wind was blowing in the Prefinal and Patriks Locmelis (LVA - Kosmic - KSB Racing Team) won the race ahead of Evan Giltaire (FRA - Sodi - Sodi Vitesse) and Spindlow. The Final was exciting. Spindlow led the early part of the race until Daniel Guinchard (GBR - KR - Argenti Motorsport) took the lead on lap 4. Rain disturbed the end of the race and the red flag was waved on lap 12. Guinchard won the race with a gain of six places, Walker was able to take advantage of his incredible comeback from 22nd to 2nd position, whereas Macintyre regained nine places in 3rd position in front of Spindlow and Leon Zelenko (SVN - Kosmic - SSC-Sportstil). he poleman Louie Westover (ESP - Tony Kart DHR) stayed in the lead, but finished in a tie with Morgan Porter (GBR - KR - Argenti Motorsport) who took the Prefinal win ahead of Clayton Ravenscroft (GBR - Kosmic) and Mark Kimber (GBR - Tony Kart - Strawberry Racing). The track was still drying out for the Final after a short rain shower. Some drivers tried to use rain tyres, but without success. The race was very lively with six leaders in succession. The hierarchy only settled down on the last lap. Porter managed to gain 4 tenths ahead of Sean Butcher (GBR - Kosmic - KR Sport), while Kimber took 3rd place, with Ravenscroft and Lachlan Robinson (ARE - Kosmic - KR Sport) completing the top five.

n the last moments of the Qualifying session on rain tyres in the drizzle, Enzo Peugeot took the lead over Elliott Vayron with a lap of 57’’994, whereas Gaspard Simon took 3rd place in front of William Nicouleau and Alessandro Giusti. Alexandra Hervé was 2nd for a long time on this difficult circuit and finally took 6th place.

Nicouleau thus took victory for the second time in Aunay after his win in 2018. Elliott Vayron moved up to 3rd position in front of Yoan Gay-Bardiaux, while Antonio Leite entered the top five. Alessandro Giusti wasn’t very comfortable on the wet track and had to settle for 14th place.

Since the beginning of the season, Owen Tangavelou has been waiting impatiently for his first major result to confirm the speed that he has consistently shown in 2020 at the wheel of his F4 single-seater, even though he is only competing in his first season in the French Championship with the FFSA Academy. This first top five finish came in the sixth of the seven events, held on the Paul Ricard circuit, which was hosting the FIA F4 for the second time this year.

Race 1 was to be very satisfying for him. “The start was a key moment of the race, because some drivers tried to overtake me, but I resisted and I was able to keep my original position at the end of the first lap. After that, I kept a very good pace and was able to avoid any race incidents, which allowed me to gain two places. I managed to cross the finish line in 5th position, not far from the driver who was 2nd in the Championship! As well as getting my best result of the season, I

IVAN PEKLIN UNFAILING MOTIVATION

For the second time of the season, the Paul Ricard circuit hosted an event of the FIA French F4 Championship, the sixth and penultimate of the year, on November 13th-15th! Ivan Peklin arrived in the South of France with his usual determination, but a first setback occurred during the qualifying session. “I found myself involved in an incident with another driver and the stewards decided to penalise me,” said the Ukrainian regretfully.

Ivan Peklin was forced to start at the back of the pack and his performance in Race 1 was remarkable. With a strong attack, he gained three positions to finish 9th. “I absolutely wanted to get into the top 10, in order to start at the front in Race 2, as the starting grid is defined by the reverse order of the top 10.” Right from the beginning of the race, Ivan managed to get the better of the poleman and took the lead on the first lap.

Unfortunately, the situation deteriorated quickly. “We have the possibility to use two more new tyres during the season and several drivers chose to mount them for Race 2. For my part, I had already had to use them because of punctures in previous races. So I had to fight against faster rivals. I started to lose a few places, then I dropped to 9th after a contact. This was quite disappointing.” In Race 3, his handling didn’t really improve... “The tyre

NOAH ANDY MORE POINTS FOR NOAH ANDY AT SPA

The driver from Reunion Island has just achieved his best result since his debut in the FIA French F4 Championship. The in-depth work carried out with the FFSA Academy this season continues to show its effects. In addition to his 7th place taken on one of the most difficult circuits of the season, that of Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium, it is above all the excellent lap times achieved by Noah Andy that are seriously encouraging.

owever, this fifth race of the season started with a particularly difficult Qualifying session. “This one took place early on Saturday morning, with very low temperatures and a cold track lacking grip. I didn’t manage to reach the limits of the car on this fast track. Fortunately, things started to improve from Race 1.” Noah Andy managed to gain one place after the start and then another one on lap seven. Unfortunately, the gap to the chasing pack was too big and he had to be satisfied with 11th place. The next morning, the Reunionese

hopeful managed to gain a few places after a perfectly controlled first lap. “Quickly, the safety car came back on the track after a crash. On the restart, my opponents took advantage of the slipstream and I dropped back down to 11th position.” Noah was able to keep an excellent rhythm and he took advantage of the end of the race to come back up and took the chequered flag in 7th position. “This is my best result of the season, I scored two more points, which is encouraging for the rest of the event.” In Race 3, the young academician was

ISACK HADJAR LOOKS AHEAD TO 2021 AFTER AN EXCITING END TO THE SEASON!

Isack Hadjar’s second season in the French F4 Championship proved to be more complicated than he had imagined. However, the young Parisian driver surpassed himself facing unexpected difficulties and revealed a potential that was noted in the field. His progress towards the higher categories is under excellent auspices thanks to his achievements this year.

y goal was to aim for the French Championship,” explains Isack. “But nothing went as planned. Faced with the competitiveness of the two Japanese drivers, I had to develop new strategies to counter their initial domination, all the more so as technical problems were frequent. In the end, this year was much more successful than I could have envisaged at the start. I am now well equipped to move up to the next level and there are interesting possibilities for next year.” The best French hopeful in the French F4

Championship, Isack managed to finish 3rd in a particularly difficult season. His sense of attack has been prominent during the races thanks to unfailing determination reinforced by a growing maturity. He made himself noticed with several breathtaking climbs in a category where all the protagonists compete on equal terms. Magnificent overtaking from the outside confirmed the emergence of an indisputable talent. Isack won three resounding victories in the last two races on the Paul Ricard circuit in addition to a superb pole position. Over the whole season, he has been on the podium 11 times and has

set the fastest lap in the race six times. These superb performances are to be appreciated in the face of very tough competition and the various setbacks that slowed down his progression in the Championship. More than any other competitor, Isack has suffered from mechanical and racing problems, depriving him of precious points in the final classification. His biggest rivals were the Japanese drivers Ayumu Iwasa and Ren Sato, aged 19 and trained according to the principles of the Japanese school on the same pattern that led their compatriot Yuki Tsunoda to the gates of F1. Thanks to a very solid mental state, Isack’s perseverance enabled him to turn things around and finish his season in a very positive way, notably beating the future Champion Iwasa five times in six races at Paul Ricard.

A debut season of single-seater racing rich in lessons has just finished on the Paul Ricard circuit for Owen Tangavelou. “The pandemic disrupted the calendar and we have contested the seventh and last race in Le Castellet again, but this time in its 3.8 km configuration,” said Owen. “Personally, I prefer the 5.8 km layout used by Formula 1, but I was determined to do my best throughout the weekend.”

fter an excellent 2nd fastest time in Free Practice by the young hopeful, the Qualifying session was marked by extremely narrow gaps between the drivers. Barely three tenths separated 5th from 12th, leaving Owen Tangavelou in 10th and 7th place on the starting grid for Races 1 and 3 respectively: “Two short tenths faster would have allowed me to enter the top five!” In Race 1, Owen was to be in a compact pack, without much opportunity to overtake. His 10th place at the finish put him in pole position for Race 2. The first few laps were very busy, but they were not good for him. “During a duel, I found myself outside in the dirty part of the track and several drivers took the opportunity to pass. It’s a pity, because I had a level of performance that could have allowed me to do better than 9th.” However, Owen Tangavelou will make it a point of honour to finish his year with a more flattering result. “The tyres were really weak, I had to deal with some understeer, but I wanted to keep my 7th place after some tough battles in the pack.” 12th in the FFSA Academy F4 classification, Owen Tangavelou finally moved up to 10th place in the FIA-badged French Championship. “All in all, it was a really positive season. The decision to start in singleseaters in 2020 was taken rather late and I didn’t have the opportunity to prepare myself as well as most of my rivals. I lacked race skills. In addition, some of them had much more karting experience than I did. I had so much to learn about overtaking, race management, starts, circuits, data acquisition, working with the engineers... But as the races went on, I made a lot of progress at all levels. I was much more comfortable in the car and in the pack. At the end of the season, I was fighting with drivers who finished in the top five of the Championship! Moreover, the 5th place I obtained on November 13th at Paul Ricard in Race 1 clearly demonstrated my potential and what I was capable of doing. I really hope to be able to take part in another season in F4 in 2021 and start to take podiums.”

IVAN PEKLIN PLACE CONFIRMED IN THE FIA F4 TOP TEN

Following the cancellation of the Le Mans and Lédenon meetings due to the pandemic, the French F4 Championship had to organise its last two events on the Paul Ricard circuit. After the 5.8 km F1 track, the 3.8 km version was used for the last round of the 2020 season, on 20th-22nd November. Thanks to this updated schedule, the seven meetings initially planned were able to run normally. But for Ivan Peklin, these calendar changes were not really beneficial for him...

t’s true that despite all my efforts, the Paul Ricard circuit at Le Castellet didn’t allow me to increase my points total as I would have liked,” regretted the Ukrainian. “It all came down to the qualifying session where the balance of the car didn’t suit me perfectly and the tyres didn’t give their optimum performance. Starting from 12th position, I knew that it would be a difficult weekend.”

In addition, contact at the start of Race 1 pushed him to the back of the pack. The Ukrainian hopeful was only able to gain two places and come back to 12th, which was to be his place on the grid for Race 2. Race 2 saw a scenario identical to Race 1, with the same position at the finish. And in Race 3, Ivan Peklin remained in 12th place. “This season will remain very instructive for me. I have learned a lot and gained a

lot of experience. I have driven on famous circuits such as Spa-Francorchamps, Zandvoort, Magny-Cours, Nogaro and Paul Ricard. I will especially remember from 2020 the podium I achieved during my first race in this Championship and the victory in the following event. In the end, I managed to take 10th position in the FFSA Academy ranking and even 9th in the FIA F4 ranking.” “I would like to thank all the people who have supported me throughout the season: my family, sponsors, coach, manager, physical trainer, psychologist, engineer and mechanics. Now it is time to think about the future and to continue to take a new step in motor sport.”

ENCOURAGING END TO THE MEETING AT PAUL RICARD The Formula 4 year is coming to an end and Noah Andy continues to gain experience in the French Championship, which will finally reach its end despite the pandemic and the upheavals in the calendar. The FFSA Academy has thus settled on the Paul Ricard circuit for the last two meetings of the season. From 12th to 15th November, it was once again the 5.8 km track that was used for this sixth and penultimate 2020 event.

«I

t’s a circuit that all the drivers knew, since we have already competed in a race at Paul Ricard at the beginning of October,” commented the top sportsman. “However, I had experienced some difficulties in exploiting my single-seater perfectly and this was unfortunately the case again. In Free Practice we drove with the tyres from the previous race and when we switched to new tyres for the Qualifying session I couldn’t get the best out of them.” Forced to start from 11th place in Race 1, he crossed the finish line in the same position 25 minutes later. “We were on slicks because the track was dry, but there were still several damp patches in the first sector. It was dangerous to take risks to move back up, the cars were sliding a lot. I pushed to try to get into the top 10, to take advantage of the inverted grid and start on the front row in Race 2, but it wasn’t enough.” Held up at the start of Race 2, Noah was downgraded to 12th position, before being blocked by a driver throughout the race. “He was closing the doors where I was faster, it was a bit frustrating not to be able to overtake him,” he said. But Noah Andy isn’t the kind of driver to give up and he gave his all in Race 3 to get into the top 10. “My tyres were starting to be seriously damaged, but that didn’t prevent me from getting a good start and gaining a few places. This time, I had to defend my 10th position until the finish line, with success and a lot of consistency”. The driver from Reunion Island therefore scored another point in the overall classification. Noah will try to do even better in the last race. This time it will be the 3.8 km Paul Ricard track that will be used from 20th to 22nd November.

EXTRÊME LIMITE

xtrême Limite is a racing school run by Patrice Roussel, which has been recognised and appreciated for many years. Based on the LoireAtlantique circuit, near Nantes, Extrême Limite is aimed in particular at karting drivers who want to discover single-seater racing in the best conditions, as well as F4 drivers looking for better performance. Thanks to its fleet of five FIA Tatuus F4s and the varied 3.3 km long Fay-deBretagne track, Extrême Limite has all the necessary infrastructure to offer tailor-made training courses adapted to everyone’s needs. Its skills in the F4 domain have attracted many drivers, and not slow ones... Training for a championship or an F4 scholarship increases the chances of success tenfold in relation to the reasonable investment that goes with it. The off-season is the ideal time to prepare and Extrême Limite is pleased to be able

to continue working despite the Covid-19. Indeed, being a recognised training centre, it is able to welcome trainees and provide them with an official exemption allowing them to travel legally without a distance limit. Activity is therefore in full swing on the Loire-Atlantique circuit. Extrême Limite offers different driving options and personalised coaching.
