INDIA’S FIRST EXPERIENCE WITH AI
The concept of Artificial Intelligence (AI) was first discussed in a workshop at Dartmouth college in 1956 which was guided by John McCarthy and Marvin Minsky. AI entered India through the works of professor H.N. Mahabala in the 1960s. Knowledge-Based Computing Systems (KBCS) created in 1986 by UNDP also paved way for India to focus on AI. It was the USA that was pioneering in the field of AI in the past few decades but India is taking efforts to extend its knowledge and research in AI.

R&D OF AI IN INDIA
India takes major steps to promote AI in India. It funds the R&D projects. The Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (CAIR) and DRDO Laboratory work on various research projects related to AI with funding from the Government of India.
The Digital India initiative of the Indian government has added more fuel to the development of AI technology in India. A special initiative made by the Indian government to support AI was “AI for All” in 2018 by the National Strategy for Artificial Intelligence. This was released in the NITI Aayog report. This shows the interest shown by India in developing AI. The National AI Portal was introduced by the Indian government with the support of MeitY along with other industrial support. These platforms share information about AI developments in India, related resources, future projects, AI educational institutes, and companies in India focusing on AI. India in the future can become the “AI Garage of the World” if the Indian government continues its efforts to develop AI. Along with AI, other technologies that are gaining popularity are the Internet of Things (IoT) and big data.

INFLUENCE OF TECH GIANTS ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF AI IN INDIA

Major technological giants like Google, IBM, and Microsoft have invested heavily to develop India’s AI ecosystem. The AI accelerator in Bengaluru was launched by Google, whereas the AI Digital Labs were launched by Microsoft.

INFLUENCE OF AI ON VARIOUS INDIAN INDUSTRIAL SECTORS
In India, AI adoption can happen in sectors like banking, financial services, and insurance (BFSI), consumer packaged goods (CPG), industrials and automotive, the retail sector, and healthcare. These industries alone contribute about 60% of the total $500 billion. The healthcare sector is showing huge growth in the Indian economy. If AI is correctly applied in the healthcare sector, it can alone generate $ 25 billion by 2025. 65% of Indian organizations define their AI strategies either at the functional level or at the enterprise level. A total of 44% of businesses have a cross-functional or dedicated AI team structure. Other than that, about 25% of businesses concentrate on outsourcing their AI talent.
