New Meadowlands: Productive City + Regional Park, red. MIT CAU + ZUS
ABSTRACT
In the last decades, many European cities have experienced a real period of renewal and regeneration of their degraded areas, where revitalization processes were carried out or new housing districts were built. In general, common trend and politics indicate the need to shape the city integrated with mixed functions. The beginnings of mixeduse are not new and applied in medieval cities. However, should the development of buildings in accordance with the existing rules be really the goal of our times and is it tantamount to the multifunctionality of a given area? Do these solutions work or do they rather leave some social or economic disproportions? This master’s thesis is an attempt to answer these questions and its aim is to popularize the idea of a productive city. The entire work was presented as a simulation during the planning and investment process between the city - as the local law legislator and influencing the shaping of future investment areas, and the investor - the designer and builder of the future place of residence. The theoretical part of the work is an attempt to define the contemporary productive city from a local perspective, analyzing its development and implementation possibilities at various urban scales. On its basis, the guide "Productive cities in local terms" was created, which easily explains and promotes the idea of a productive city, specifying the possible types of implementation. The guide can be used by local governments and other entities affecting the nature of the urban space. The second part of the master's thesis is a comprehensive urban and architectural concept in the area of the former Rolling Stock Repair Works in Przeróbka, Gdansk. The concept was created on the basis of the theoretical part of the work and is an original image of a new spatial and social structure functioning around the idea of a productive city. The project shows how new, large-scale urban projects should be shaped, creating the first district based on the idea of a productive city in Gdansk.
