The spare change that changed America In the winter of 1784, Spain lost a shipload of spare change that would have saved their colonial North American empire. The El Cazador was a brigantine of war, loaded with coins from the Mexico City mint, bound for the port of New Orleans. The precious cargo was desperately needed by the Spanish to help stabilize the money system in their Louisiana territory. When it disappeared, Spain was left no choice but to sell to the French. The rest, as they say, is 5th-grade history. In 1803, Napoleon sold Louisiana to the United States, instantly doubling the size of the country.

Play it again Sami Walk the streets of Casablanca on a cool Moroccan evening and you can’t help but whistle “the tune.” Few songs fit the city more perfectly than “As Time Goes By.” The old hotels and nightclubs still cut the same skyline as they did in the 1940s and palm trees still tower over the Boulevard de la Corniche. I must have conjured the ghosts of Bogart and Bergman right before I hailed the little red cab, because I slid into the back seat singing, “you must remember this.”

One watch had seen better days, but wore its scuffs and scratches like badges of honour. It was a classic WWII timepiece that probably took some knocks during the North Africa campaign. The watch itself was a goner, but the sharp design deserved a second chance.

We’ve recreated it as the Stauer Casablanca Watch, a vintage-styled automatic framed with a coin-edged case. The antique ivory dial features bold silver numerals, blued hands and three eyes to mark military time, day and date. This watch only looks 100 years old

There are only a handful of truly pivotal events in the history of watch making. In 1656, the pendulum clock was invented. The world’s first tourbillon appeared in 1795. The mechanical stopwatch was patented in 1930. And in 2012, Stauer created the Opus Timepiece. This watch deserves a place in the legacy of timekeeping legends because it was directly inspired by them. After years of searching auctions and private sales, I dreamed of the ideal vintage watch. World’s most valuable timepiece disappears Back in 1933, the single most important watch ever built was engineered for a quiet millionaire collector named Henry Graves. It took over three years and the most advanced horological technique to create the multifunction masterpiece. One day, he was strolling the bombed-out streets of Palermo in dusty olive drab. Months later, he’s headed uptown in a grey flannel suit. He missed the comfort of his rifle and felt absolutely naked without his stripes.

His friends set him straight. They reminded him that here in the big city, you don’t have to worry about rank.

The watch he wore could be considered the great grandfather of our Stauer Madison Automatic. It was a big-bodied, broad-faced rose gold beauty that he’d picked up overseas.
