GROWTH GCF Community Report Fall 2015
As the Galesburg Community Foundation continues to grow and develop, there is a need for more communication because we have more news to share. At GCF we talk a lot about the three roles of community foundations: growth, grants and leadership. In this fall update we share a few stories about steps we are taking to enhance the differences we are making in Knox and Warren Counties. In this edition we share news about our current Nonprofit Endowment Match Program that will leverage more than $200,000 of new resources for area nonprofits. We also are excited to share news about our new planned giving society, the Bickerdyke Society. The Bickerdyke Society recognizes the act of giving and the caring individuals who are connecting with causes they care about. In this edition you will also learn how our Certificate in Nonprofit Governance course is helping nonprofits and their board members thrive. There’s a lot of growth happening right now at the Galesburg Community Foundation, and we hope you will join us in this great opportunity.

Endowment Match Program Strengthens Nonprofits Nonprofits are critical to the success of our communities. Whether providing programs, events, services, or people, area nonprofits provide resources that make our communities healthier. Helping nonprofits grow to better fulfill their mission and ensuring their long-term financial health are a few of the key reasons why endowment building is important.

The Galesburg Community Foundation’s board and staff were pleased to announce at a special luncheon in May that 20 nonprofit organizations were selected to participate in an Endowment Match Program. Originally the program was created to serve 10 organizations. However, when 20 quality applications were received, the GCF board decided to allocate resources enabling all 20 to participate. GCF Executive Director Joshua Gibb said, “This is an excellent opportunity to help organizations serving our communities grow. Additionally, this provides organizations another way to connect with their donors. This is also an exciting opportunity that allows organizations to think about their future and how endowment will allow them to forever fulfill their mission.” The Endowment Match Program challenges each of the selected organizations to raise $10,000. Once organizations meet their goal, GCF will provide $10,000 in matching funds. Organizations have until June 30, 2016 to establish their endowment fund. In addition to the match dollars, participating organizations also received fundraising education support and $1,000 to assist with marketing their endowment campaign. The fundraising education support consisted of three training sessions led by Nathan Ruby of Ruby and Associates, a Peoriabased firm. The following 20 nonprofit organizations are participating in the match program: Carl Sandburg Historic Site Association

Sixth Cohort COMPLETES CERTIFICATE IN NONPROFIT GOVERNANCE
The sixth cohort of nonprofit organizations successfully completed the Certificate in Nonprofit Governance in August. Participating organizations included Knox County Teen Court, Learning Connections, VNA and Choral Dynamics. The Certificate in Nonprofit Governance provides organizations with the tools they need to be successful in today’s challenging economic environment. The foursession course is for executive directors, staff, and board members interested in learning more about their roles and responsibilities, assessing their existing strategy, identifying board gaps and recruiting and developing new leadership, learning how to execute an effective fund development program, building the organization and much more. To date, more than 200 individuals representing 30 organizations have successfully completed the Certificate in Nonprofit Governance. The Certificate in Nonprofit Governance is made possible in part from the Kleine Family Foundation Fund.

GCF TO LAUNCH BICKERDYKE SOCIET Y The Bickerdyke Society at GCF is comprised of selfless and forwardthinking individuals who have arranged to leave a gift to the Foundation or a fund at GCF in their estate. The Foundation is proud to establish the Bickerdyke Society to honor individuals and families who put others first. Members of the Society, like Mother Bickerdyke, understand the power of philanthropy and that supporting nonprofits is a critical factor in growing healthy communities. Members of the Bickerdyke Society have established a planned gift for GCF or a fund at GCF. The Foundation is grateful for these incredible gifts as they are planting seeds to ensure a healthy future for our communities. While we may not personally experience the fruits of these gifts today, our communities will most certainly benefit from these gifts in the future—for generations to come. To learn more about The Bickerdyke Society and our upcoming October event celebrating the launch of this exciting opportunity, contact GCF at 309.344.8898.
