DEAR FRIENDS, Every year, we sit down to reflect on the successes we, as a community, have achieved through our united efforts. The last few years, the economic challenges we have faced have tended to overshadow those successes. Yet, Pierce County has shown that even in times such as these, we are making progress.

We at United Way of Pierce County are working hard to not only help those currently in crisis but to get people on the right track before they find themselves in poverty, homelessness or poor health. We have joined forces with other likeminded partners in both human services and government as well as the corporate environment to make a bigger, more collective impact. Even though many of those partners have been struggling during the last several years, like so many of us, we continue to make strides in our community. We know that working together, united, we can do more to be socially responsible and create a healthy and thriving Pierce County.

Thanks to thousands of donors, volunteers, advocates and partners, our community is serving the most vulnerable and making a difference in Pierce County. Thanks to you, united was able to provide funding to 117 local programs at 70 agencies, helping to create a safety net of services for those in need. Thanks to you, 166,385 hours of volunteer service were brokered through our Volunteer Center last year, helping local agencies do more. Thanks to you, our state leaders were educated on key initiatives, insuring measures that provided housing for local families passed. Thanks to you, key providers and experts have joined together to make vital changes in Education, Housing, Income and Health, developing a system that will help people be more successful.

While many of the achievements in this report are related to efforts or programs administered by United Way, we know that nothing we celebrate here could have been accomplished without you and others in the community. UNITED WAY OF PIERCE COUNTY RECOGNIZES THAT A PERSON IN NEED TYPICALLY HAS MORE THAN ONE NEED. We support 117 individual programs each with their own expertise in a focused area spanning the issues of Education, Income and Housing, Health and Emergency Services. Our system-wide view helps to create a healthier community. The United Way Community Impact Teams look at the places of intersection and work to identify gaps so the whole system is stronger.

The long-term, systemic initiatives are more challenging to address, but worth the effort.

EDUCATION EARLY LEARNING: Help more kids start school with the skills to succeed In 2011, United Way of Pierce County continued to broaden our focus in Education from early learning to include other challenges children face during their school career. One of those areas is literacy and the affects falling behind can have on a child’s continued success. Additionally, we are working with others to develop a road map for educational success that will help close the achievement gap currently being seen in many schools.

United Way continues to partner with key agencies in early learning to help more children be ready to succeed when starting school. With partners First 5 FUNdamentals, the Children’s Museum and Promoting First Relationships, nearly 9,200 parents are learning to be their child’s first teachers.

They are developing better relationships, being educated on kindergarten readiness and incorporating learning into play.

Additionally, United Way provided funding to 15 programs geared toward helping our kids be better prepared socially and emotionally for school.

Max is just one of those kids. When he started care at Community Montessori, he was unable to sit still, follow directions and was very shy. His social behavior quickly got in the way of his ability to learn. The team worked with Max and his parents to help him overcome these challenges and focus more on the cognitive skills he will need as he enters school.

From helping them overcome learning barriers to teaching them to thrive in a classroom setting, thanks to your gifts, we are preparing more kids to be successful.

GRADUATION:

Improve on-time high school graduation rates

Success in the classroom culminates with graduation. As more students are struggling to graduate on time, United Way of Pierce County sought opportunities and aligned funding strategies to develop a plan to improve those numbers. United Way continues to work with Tacoma 360 to improve student success by strengthening and aligning school and community services. Tacoma 360 increases awareness about the conditions affecting Tacoma students and works to advance academic achievement while addressing those challenges.

In addition, United Way provided funding to 22 youth programs aimed at helping teens improve their academic performance and graduate from high school.

Communities In Schools’ Project Grad program is one of those. The program works with students who have fallen behind and helps them not only get caught up but graduate on time. The program focuses on issues that affect their ability to learn both in and outside the classroom and seeks to resolve those issues.

INCOME HOUSING: Help families become more stable by increasing the number of affordable homes Over the last several years, United Way of Pierce County has partnered with the County and the City of Tacoma to offer the local Housing Trust Fund Demonstration Project. This local fund is leveraged by developers’ projects to attract other capital for affordable housing. Since its inception, the fund has leveraged over $1 million to help invest in 433 units of housing. The fund’s latest project, Habitat for Humanity’s The Woods at Golden Given, is potentially expected to add 30 new units. In addition, United Way is strategizing to help homeless youth and teens “aging out” of the foster care system. Funding was also provided to nine housing stability programs in Pierce County.

One of those programs is Helping Hand House. United Way of Pierce County supports a Helping Hand House program 7

that not only provides transitional housing for families in need but also strives to help those families remain in permanent housing through financial education and employment assistance.

United Way of Pierce County also continues to partner with Pierce County’s annual Project Homeless Connect event. In 2011 over 1,500 individuals received muchneeded immediate services. These included housing, filing of income tax returns and employment and education resources people also were connected to services designed to move them toward transitional housing and economic stability.

FINANCIAL SELF-SUFFICIENCY:

Help struggling families and individuals thrive through economic self-sufficiency

In 2011, United Way of Pierce County and its partners in financial self-sufficiency launched CAPPCO, an effort aimed at Creating a Prosperous Pierce County. Thanks to support from the Boeing Company and eight other Pierce County organizations, the consortium in new ways is working to help families get on their feet. United Way also worked with partners on foreclosure prevention and education and explored how service partners can help families overcome the challenges transportation can have

HEALTH HEALTH ACCESS: Make health care services more available to those who need them United Way of Pierce County continues to work toward increasing access to vital health care. In 2011, we provided funding to support 15 programs providing access to medical and dental care. Many of those without access to care often put off treatment until their condition becomes an emergency.

Gillian is a diabetic who was successfully managing her condition until she lost her job and medical coverage. Without insurance, she discontinued her medication and regular doctor’s visits. She visited Neighborhood Clinic, an agency receiving funding from United Way of Pierce County, when 11

she knew her condition was approaching dangerous levels.

Her glucose was so high Gillian had to be admitted to the Emergency Room for care. After becoming stable, Gillian returned to Neighborhood Clinic for a follow-up visit and was provided the medical supplies and medication she needed to maintain her diabetes. After regaining employment and insurance, she was transferred to Community Health Care, another agency partnering with United Way, to establish a medical home and more consistent treatment plan.

EDUCATION AND PREVENTION:

Teach children and adults to be healthier and prevent health issues

In 2011, United Way of Pierce County joined Multicare and partners from the ACHIEVE coalition in an initiative to promote healthy lifestyle choices for children and families called Ready, Set, Go! 5-2-1-0. The county-wide program seeks to increase recreational activity and healthy eating while challenging kids to cut out screen time and sugary drinks. United Way provided funding to help the program with community outreach and will engage local schools as well as families in the effort to reverse the trend of childhood obesity.

In addition, United Way provided funding to 15 local programs focused on education and disease prevention.

One of those programs is Diabetes Association’s summer day camp. The camp helps young patients with diabetes understand their condition and develop habits that teach them how to manage it.

EMERGENCY SERVICES

BASIC NEEDS: Help people in crisis by providing the services they need most United Way of Pierce County has been supporting local human services programs since 1921. Those programs make up a safety net of services that help those in need.

From shelter to food to utility assistance, the help provided for Emergency Services is often the boost a person needs to get on the right track. In 2011, United Way provided funding to 34 programs in Emergency Services. These programs helped nearly 500,000 people recover from homelessness, layoffs, house fires, domestic violence and other crisis situations.

United Way also formed a learning team around the issue of Emergency Services, seeking to evaluate the system and address service gaps. They are focused on areas such as infant care items at food banks and transportation.

A gift of just $10 a week provides 44 backpacks of food for the weekend for school children through Families Unlimited Network’s Food Bank. It can also pay for heat for a home in the winter from Eatonville Family Agency or provide 13 nights of shelter through the Rescue Mission.

United Way’s Gifts In Kind program collects donations of material goods, both new and gently-used and redistributes them to people in need through partner agencies. Individuals and businesses donate household goods, furniture, excess merchandise, office equipment and more to help local agencies serve their clients and meet the needs of many in our community.

Men’s Wearhouse’s annual suit drive resulted in the donation of $192,230 in clothing. United Way received 566 suits, 531 sport jackets, 620 slacks and 690 dress shirts as well as 1,600 new ties and 250 new dress shirts. The suits are redistributed to several agencies including Catholic Community Services’ Suited for Success program. The program provides dress clothes to men re-entering the workforce after bouts of homelessness and unemployment. Thanks to those donations, more men are equipped for job interviews that will help them gain employment and establish financial stability.

ADVOCATE ADVOCACY Each year, United Way of Pierce County sets their sights on key measures at the state and local level that could negatively impact the human service issues affecting Pierce County citizens most. In 2011, the advocacy team sought to maintain support for low-income child care and home visiting programs as well as investing funds to continue the development of Bethel School District’s Skills Center. In addition, they targeted funding and grants for affordable housing as well as healthcare coverage for low-income children.

The work of United Way’s volunteer advocacy team has been instrumental in funding South Sound 2-1-1 and similar services throughout the state. South Sound 2-1-1 provides resource referrals to callers in need of shelter, food, transportation, utility assistance, legal advice, child care and more. In 2011, South Sound 2-1-1 received 68,413 calls.

A 2-1-1 SUCCESS STORY South Sound 2-1-1 is a free service that connects people with essential health and human resources.

In 2011, more than 68,000 calls came into South Sound 2-1-1 for assistance with counseling, health care, shelter and much more. Information and referral specialists offer compassion, understanding and advocacy to callers from Pierce, Thurston and Lewis counties. United Way of Pierce County administers South Sound 2-1-1 at the lowest cost, with the highest satisfaction rate and quickest response time in the Northwest.

A case manager from the Health Department called South Sound 2-1-1 for help for a family struggling to get on their feet. The father had just started back to work and they were transitioning with their infant into their own home with no furnishings except for some baby items. Through the referrals provided by 2-1-1, the family was able to obtain some living room furniture and a bed along with household items to set up their new home.

VOLUNTEER VARSITY LETTER IN COMMUNITY SERVICE A trend among school districts and youth is the incorporation of community service into their high school career. No where is that more evident than in Youth United’s Varsity Letter in Community Service program.

Youth United, a program of United Way of Pierce County, honored a record number of Pierce County high school students with varsity letters in community service in 2011. Varsity letters were awarded to 554 students who volunteered a combined total of more than 133,000 hours of service in the last year. The Varsity Letter in Community Service program recognizes students in grades 9 through 12 who volunteered 145 hours or more of community service between April 1 and the following March 31. To qualify, students were required to volunteer with at least one school33

related project and one community-related project. The average number of hours for this year’s group was 241 hours, with the top number of hours by a single student at 3,000.

The value of this volunteer time as determined by national standards set by Independent Sector is over $2.9 million.

Of the varsity letter winners, 12 seniors also earned a Willie Stewart Community Service Scholarship for excellence in volunteer work.

Pierce County is the first county in the nation to offer such a program where students receive a varsity letter for service just like those given to athletes and musicians. United Way of Pierce County is now working with communities across the country to incorporate similar programs, using Youth United’s effort as a model.

Throughout Pierce County, there are hundreds of agencies and organizations that need help. United Way of Pierce County’s Volunteer Center connects people with those opportunities to serve, creating a way for them to share their time and talents with others. We offer volunteer opportunities for individuals, families, youth, seniors, and large or small groups from businesses, schools, churches, service clubs and any other groups with a desire to serve our community.

United Way of Pierce County’s Youth United program offers a variety of ways to connect youth with meaningful volunteer opportunities. By volunteering time and services, they discover and develop skills, apply academic knowledge through service and learning activities, receive recognition for their efforts and have fun helping others.

RSVP

Project:U engages people in their 20s and 30s looking to develop, support and serve the Pierce County community. The volunteerled group holds social events that benefit the community through United Way, schedule volunteer projects throughout the area and educate their peers about the conditions affecting our community. In 2011, Project:U held the first annual Get Involved Gala - The GIG. The glamorous night of dancing and food gave young professionals an opportunity to connect people, build their network and learn about a community cause.

RSVP engages individuals 55 years and over in quality volunteer experiences that enrich the lives of both the volunteers and those they serve. RSVP volunteers are people with the experience, energy and passion to make a difference in Pierce County.

Success Achieved Engaged 741 volunteers in 155,233 hours of service Recruited 89 new volunteers Volunteers served at 56 sites in nonprofits throughout Pierce County

Success Achieved Held 11 volunteer events totaling 234 volunteer hours and seven social events/fundraisers raised over $2,925 Held several food and diaper drives totaling 225 pounds of food and 682 diapers Created an educational celebration to reach out to new members.

The Get Involved Gala (The GIG) raised $14,278, in addition to bringing 304 young professionals to the event.
