KARINA KANE

FOURTH YEAR BARCH

Karina Kane started by assembling grills at a summer job with a toolbox but is now developing a toolbox of her own in the architectural world. She is proficient in relevant software, drawing, and fabrication. With her tools, she'll use design to form a narrative, discovered by the human sense, to create an experience of lasting impact.

ORGANIC ADAPTATION

2024 W MAGGIE YAMBERT | PROF CATTY ZHANG

_The intent behind this project is to create a space that functions independently. The three main themes are subnature protection, domestic revolution, and adaptation.

_Subnature refers to elements like gas, smoke, and exhaust, which this structure is designed to combat. The exterior is crafted from a clay mixed with titanium dioxide, enabling it to repel external emissions from vehicles and buildings. Additionally, this clay does not produce any gaseous toxins, thereby safeguarding the interior environment.

_The concept of domestic revolution challenges reliance on mechanical systems, instead harnessing solar energy while providing protection from the wind. The separate compartments introduce a new system of plant purifiers to enhance indoor air quality. This approach fundamentally critiques the notion that fire offers a lasting comfort, pointing out that it requires various materials to ignite and often leaves behind a lingering smoke that makes one feel unclean. By utilizing existing biological conditions, such as plants, we can achieve both comfort and cleanliness without resorting to human manufacturing processes.

_Lastly, adaptation emphasizes that this building is designed to be a self-sufficient habitat for humans, capable of existing without external intervention.

_Throughout this project, we conducted an in-depth investigation of smoke behavior and created an interactive model that interacts with this invisible force. By using Houdini, we created diagrams that clearly represent the dynamics of smoke movement, with this software we produced animation frames of the observed phenomena.

2023 | PROF MARLEEN DAVIS

_Upon entering, one is surrounded in comfort and a feeling of closeness within a grand space, where the surprise of this illusion greets them, fostering a deep attachment to what they call home. The program is both standard and essential: a high-rise residential tower that extends an invitation to the community, where the lack of predictability inspires exploration. As they venture vertically throughtout the space, the mountains emerge as loyal companions, greeting them each day and offering a source of rejuvenation.

_The studio focused on urban planning, situated along N Broadway in Knoxville, TN. The expansive site was completely vacant, providing a blank canvas for our collaborative efforts to reimagine its potential. Each zone was assigned a different program, and my zone specifically involved the design of a high-rise residential tower.

_The design process continued beyond the final deadline, as revisions proved both beneficial and essential for the project's success. A theme of scenic views remained central to the design. The orientation of the tower is rotated to face both the mountains to the southeast and Sharp's Ridge to the west. The rooms extend outward, enabling the curtain wall to become the most prominent feature of the space and maximizing the views. The exterior form resembles a blade, and only during exploration around the building does its appearance transform—vanishing and then reappearing. The south-facing curtain wall features sun shades arranged in a seemingly random yet intentionally organized pattern, creating a distinctive facade.

_All images were produced on trace paper, with the exception of the section perspective, interior artificial intelligence renders, and photographs of the physical model.

ANCESTORY LIGHT SANCTUARY

2023 | PROF LAUREN BUNTEMEYER

_THE STORY: Theia, the goddess of light in Greek mythology, serves as an inspiration for this project. Though not often mentioned in detail, her name is frequently tied to her children, emphasizing the importance of family. Among her three children is Selene, the embodiment of the moon and stars. As someone who is adopted, I often find myself wondering about my biological family, particularly my biological mother. Gazing up at the moon and stars, I feel a comforting connection to my ancestors and her, pondering that they too may be looking down on me. My vision is to create a space where the sky, stars, and moon are in full view, intertwined with the concept of a family tree. By transforming the essence of ancestry websites like ancestry.com into a tangible experience, this project seeks to connect people around the world through a shared mission, both physically and spiritually, while honoring the sacred sky and reducing light pollution. The elevated "pods" I envision will offer a futuristic yet inviting environment, creating a new reality with billions of physical archives for research, and using technologies yet to be developed to construct these tangible family trees. This experience promises a unique emotional connection, where the creation of family trees and the beauty of the visible sky unite in a remarkable way.

_The architecture spans the landscape, emphasizing the themes of light pollution and its absence. Within this concept are diagrams nested within a larger diagram, structured like a family tree that illustrates the timeline of the information presented. The design begins by shielding urban areas, such as Mongkok and the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, from light pollution. It then transitions to adapting to a remote setting, such as the Sahara Desert, to first establish this protective shield, to only then foster the development of new architectural elements within the space.

ARTIST NOOK

2022 | PROF MICAH

_An artist nook at the Quarry in Knoxville, TN is inspired by the symphony of sounds in the area. The abstract shapes of the structure capture the essence of this auditory experience, directing attention both in 2D and 3D toward the vibrancy of the birds and the serene humming of the water. The design process involved immersing myself in the site, closing my eyes, and allowing the sounds to guide my mind to create a vision.
