The President's Letter When are we going to get there?

I remember as a kid tormenting my parents with the question “When are we going to get there?” many, many times on road trips to visit my grandparents and to the beach for vacation. That tormenting was visited on me by my children on road trips I took them on while they were young. Such is the passage of time with kids always wanting to know “When are we going to get there?” from parents driving the family somewhere.

As I read through the results of our annual employee survey and reviewed the comments (by the way, thank you for taking the time to write these) so many of you offered, I picked up on some of that “when are we going to get there?” in your comments and responses. Please don’t get me wrong, I don’t take this as “childlike” behavior. In fact, I would characterize your comments and responses as very far from childlike. The question I picked up was quite legitimate and seemed to be triggered by a very understandable wonder about the pace of change. It’s clear there is a lot of change going on at CTE—Salesforce, ServiceMax, ServiceLink, new facilities, 6S, plus some other challenges and changes our customers and manufacturer partners are asking of us.

It’s no wonder someone might ask, “when will all this end, when will we get there and get to stop?”

One of the other themes that I picked up in the Employee Opinion Survey was the desire for more communication and collaboration at CTE. I think these dual requests are probably linked to all this change going on. While we will review our employee opinion survey at the workgroup level to agree on and initiate plans to improve things in your work group, I want to make it a corporate aim that we get much better at change management practices at CTE. Good change management requires managers and leaders engage, involve and explain the change to those being affected. It involves “telling the why”—giving those affected the reasons and a clear understanding of “why” the change is needed and necessary and how making the change work will improve things at CTE. I don’t think I’m as good at this as you need me to be. I don’t think as a company, CTE is as good at this as you need us to be.

So, you can expect as we move forward that I (and we) will get better at change management. We have to!! After all, I don’t think the need for change management is going to change in the future. In fact, it’s likely to accelerate with technology, competitive pressures, and customers expecting more for less. For us to be effective and work as a team, we must get better at change management.

Beginning this fall as part of strategic planning, we are going to train and improve how we do change management and involve all managers and leaders in getting better. I want to make sure we can boil down our communication so it is straightforward and clear.

I can promise you this though: I (and we) won’t always do a good job with the messaging and communication. Even using our best efforts, I (and we) will fail to be thorough or clear about “why are we changing and why are be asking for people to change how and what they are doing.”

That is why I want to ask something of you. When I fail (or your boss fails) to be clear about a change going on, please ask. I know this is hard as nobody wants to appear as if they don’t understand or get it.

However, the courage to ASK is important as I can assure you if you are confused some others are too and you would be doing everyone a favor.

After all, with incomplete communication, we cannot work as a team.

More importantly, we might let the customer down.

OK, I know asking for clarity is hard. But please do it. Ask yourself this, “does my boss want me to fail?” The answer would be unequivocally “no.” If you are unclear about a change, you probably are thinking my boss “doesn’t get if and wants me to fail.” If you think this, please ask for more explanation. It will help all of us. So, that’s my ask.

It’s important we treat change management as a dialogue. Because when we hear from you and you are not clear or have an objection, then it means our plan can probably get better and you are helping us figure this out. After all, one of the things we all benefit from is listening, which is also a key skill we plan to work on while getting better at explaining the change.

Thank you again for all you are doing to help us make our business better. It is really paying dividends and I am ever so appreciative.

By the way, when your kids ask “when are we going to get there?” this summer while you are driving to the beach or mountains or to visit family, just tell then what your parents told you: “Almost there!”

6S Person of the Month

The 6S Person of the Month award is reserved for that person that has shown outstanding efforts and results in its branch’s quest for a solid 6S program; a person that has set themselves apart from the others. For the month of June, this honor is awarded to Michelle Watkins of LiftOne Tuscaloosa and Justin Sheppard - Power Products and Solutions (PPS)!

The Tuscaloosa branch was a site that needed a little help when we first kicked off the 6S program. The yard was in disarray and the shop needed some organization and clean up. Along with her teammates, Stan Woods and Courtney Ashcraft, Michelle helped fix that situation.

Michelle has fully embraced the 6S program, recognizing the benefits and wanting the Tuscaloosa branch to “shine” in the 6S program. Michele has been active with 6S activities over the past 12 months and her efforts have made a difference in improving their score from 67 to 89. Besides being very pleasant and professional to work with, Michelle always completes the 6S Inspection on time.

6S - Most Improved Branch in the Quarter The 6S Most Improved Branch of the Quarter award is reserved for that branch that has shown outstanding effort and results in its quest for improvement in its 6S program. For the second such award of 2017, the award goes to two branches; LiftOne Greensboro and PPS, Power Systems.

Congratulations!

LiftOne Greensboro has improved in the last 90 days, working on shop and yard projects that have drastically improved the appearance of the branch. It has increased its 6S score from 44 in January; 67 in March, to 87 in June. Along the way, it has transformed its shop and yard from what was a very cluttered, dirty, unsafe environment to an organized, clean and safe workplace.

6S - Most Improved Branch in the Quarter (cont.)

Power Products and Solutions realized a 37-point improvement in their 6S monthly assessment scores in the second quarter, raising their score from 56 points to 93 out of a possible 100 points. Excellent Progress!

This achievement represents the highest score in the Power Systems Division at the end of the quarter and stands as the fourth best score to-date across all CTE sites.

Well done, and congratulations to the PPS team!

6S Person of the Month (cont.)

Justin is recognized for his outstanding engagement and determination as a 6S champion in rallying the PPS team to achieve a 19-point improvement in their 6S score to 93 out of 100 possible points.

The major contributors to this gain was in posting signage, displaying 6S areas of responsibility (AOR), defining, assigning and posting daily, weekly and monthly routines, as well as completing the PPS 6S communication board.

CTE was invaded by the Blackhawk Ninja Braves Tribe!

On June 25, the "Blackhawk Ninja Braves" tribe of Charlotte YMCA's Y-Guides program visited CTE. The YMCA Y-Guides is a program that focuses on strengthening the father-child relationship through oneon-one activities to create memories that last a lifetime.

Jim Mackinson, VP of Pinnacle Cranes, his wife Leslie Mackinson, and Geoff Blair (CE Parts Service Manager) hosted the Blackhawk Ninja Braves. The tribe was given an overview of CTE, and was taken out back for a closer look at the 90-ton rough terrain link-belt crane and several other pieces of equipment (e.g., mini excavator, skid steer). While walking through the construction shop and yard, the guides were educated about each piece of equipment that is currently under repair. “The tribe had a great time bonding and connecting with our community,” said Seth McKinney, Tribe Leader. He expressed his thanks to Jim, Leslie, and Geoff for their hospitality. The tour ended in peace and friendship, and the Tribe was treated to special Panther Blue CAT hats and Pinnacle Crane key chains.

Networking and a Cookout - The Perfect Lunch Break!

The dog days of summer are here and it is the perfect opportunity to get out and thank our customers. On June 8, our Truck PSSR’s hosted a cookout for Parton Lumber. Andy Cairo, Truck Product Support Manager and “Grill Master,” and his team cooked hamburgers and hot dogs for about 50 guests. “The cookout is a new approach to network with our customers and help maintain long lasting relationships. Our intentions are to create a friendship with our customers and gain more insight into their daily operations, in a relaxed and informal setting,” said Andy. “The cookout was well-attended and a great time was had by all. We plan to do several more customer cookouts. I can’t give enough thanks to Bryan Thomas, Mike Conner, and Todd Birch for all their help with the event!”

Power Generation Completes Biogas Project for Monogram Foods Carolina CAT’s Power Generation team recently wrapped up a biogas project for Monogram Foods, maker of beef jerky and pickled products. The company is located in Martinsville, Virginia, where spreading liquid waste from animal bioproducts is prohibited. Monogram Foods has leftover oils and fats that are boiled off in their manufacturing process. The local waste water treatment plants have a steady stream of waste, with a delicate balance of needing certain number of bacteria, etc. It takes a long time to adjust levels. The wastewater plants could no longer allow Monogram to dump the bioproducts, even though Monogram paid to do so. To tackle this issue, Monogram hired CHS Engineers. CHS designed a system that takes the waste, processes it through an anaerobic digester, which has their own bacteria that breaks everything down, and then biogas is produced, which powers the generator.

We installed one 400kW generator set, a CG132-08 model, which produces 400kW of continuous power. The engine was packaged by Caterpillar in Germany at CG plant, across the river from Mannheim. With the CG132 product, the selling dealer is always responsible for the product support, unless the local dealer is certified as well as willing to accept the service. Carter CAT is not certified, and Monogram Foods is too far for Carter to get to (Martinsville is located near the North Carolina border), so Carolina CAT will also be the servicing dealer for this equipment.

This project is just under $1,000,000. The CG132 engine is the smallest unit we sell for Combined Heat and Power (400kW). The system adds back that amount in electricity, which feeds Monogram Foods, but Monogram uses a lot more than 400kW. If the power goes out from the utility, we have to shut down as well, as we don’t provide enough power to cover the building. This would be equivalent to power 520 homes on average. The greater the methane number, the less fuel we require to reach 400 kW.

LiftOne Teamwork in Action!

Dalton Branch Manager, Ricky Nelson, recently expressed his thanks to Montgomery’s Rachel Mitchell for helping them with their 6S Project: “…When I participated in the LiftOne Wounded Warriors Ride in Montgomery, Rachel and I were talking and she offered her help. Paul was gracious and allowed her to leave Montgomery and come help us.

Rachel came in and just did an awesome job. She worked extremely hard every day in both manual labor as well as training Levi, whom I feel now has a much better grasp of the 6S idea and direction we want to go in. It was amazing to see how much stuff had been collected over the years and put on shelves, racks, and in the mezzanine - they filled up a 30-yard open top container with junk and we have at least another 30-yard container to fill up. I can’t thank Paul enough for allowing Rachel to come help us. This is what being a complete team is all about. Rachel is a star in my book and a huge asset to Montgomery and LiftOne. I can’t thank her enough for what she did for us. This is what sets LiftOne aside from any other company out there. We are all brothers and sisters in the same work family working to meet a goal together all as one. Thanks, everyone from the bottom of my heart.”

Team C229 – Full of Heart and Hustle!

Laura Walker (Albany Branch Supervisor) recently shared that her daughter, Emily, a rising junior at Sherwood Christian Academy, traveled to Orlando with her team to play in the largest volleyball tournament in the world.

Emily is part of a local club out of Leesburg, Georgia, team C229. Emily wears number 2 and she is the libero (specialized defense player) for the team, which is why she wears a different color jersey. Emily earned her own money to attend the tournament through various fund raisers; mostly by baking and selling homemade cookies. Several LiftOne Albany employees also helped Emily obtain her dream of attending the tournament.

One of the team’s coaches, Lisa O’Connor, was diagnosed with breast cancer and the team dedicated their trip to her. C229 is a small club; however, because of their competitiveness, they placed 61 out of 82. The local media picked up the story and featured the team’s trip.

Fortunately, Coach O’Conner is now well and cancer-free.

June Safe Drivers Each month, CTE recognizes the top 20 drivers who have driven the most miles while not recording one single GPS incident (speeding or seat belt violation).

In addition, to qualify for the driving award a driver must also maintain clean auto accident status for the previous 12 months.

These monthly safe drivers will receive 500 impact award points.
