Lagan Weir Footbridge triumphs
T
he new Lagan Weir Footbridge is a brilliant example of the changing face of Belfast, providing a link from the historic Cathedral Quarter to the new ambitious waterfront development area. Designed around the principle of elegant simplicity, the Lagan Weir Footbridge, which connects Donegall Quay and Queen’s Quay, provides safe and sustainable access into Belfast for cyclists as well as pedestrians. Contributing to the ongoing transformation of the city, it replaces a 2m-wide footbridge
that was too narrow to accommodate rising numbers. Now the new 120m-long bridge connects Belfast’s centre to Titanic Quarter, Europe’s largest urban waterfront regeneration project, providing a place to linger and take in stunning views of the weir and of the city. The new bridge, which is approximately eight metres across at its widest point, was completed in time for the Tall Ships 2015 event. With the continuing development of the City Quays project – which also won a RICS NI Award – and the recent opening of the Waterfront Conference and Exhibition Centre, this new bridge will continue to play an important role. In addition, the Lagan Weir Footbridge is seen as an essential aspect of the Queen’s Quay Masterplan, which sets out an exciting vision of the development potential of this area, as it will improve the links between the city Gary McCausland, Trevor Leaker and Julian Netherton from AECOM with RICS Director, Ben Collins, celebrate their success in centre and Queen’s Quay, as well as winning the Infrastructure category. the Titanic Quarter.
