HEALTH ISSUES ARE A CHALLENGE FOR ELECTRICIANS Nearly one in three electricians report that they have suffered injuries over the past year, either inside or outside of work, according to the findings of the third Annual ECIS Healthcheck. In it, ECIS (the employee benefits company for the construction industry), reveals that 31% of electricians have been affected by problems with their back, neck, arm, shoulder, hip, leg or knee in the past year. If not treated promptly they could potentially lead to long-term issues which may affect some electricians’ working ability and, consequently, their future income.. The findings have also been reviewed alongside the latest data from the health assessments of over 1,200 electricians undertaken in 2015. With an average age of 47, the assessments show that some electricians do not always manage

to find the time to exercise and some suffer from weight challenges, and higher than usual cholesterol and blood pressure. Vicki Leslie, Client Relationship Manager, ECIS, said, “It is good that so many electricians took up the opportunity in 2015 to have a health assessment as part of their membership of the JIB, although some aspects of the analysis of the assessments are a potential cause for concern. “In addition, the health issues identified by the health assessments such as lack of exercise and high blood pressure go hand in hand, but can also be remedied with the right support and advice. Regular exercise has a number of benefits in reducing the risk of heart disease, diabetes, or high blood pressure.” W: www.ecins.co.uk

EIR BUSINESS NI HELPS BALLOO HIRE REACH NEW HEIGHTS Balloo Hire, one of Northern Ireland’s leading plant, tool and equipment hire providers, has turned to eir Business NI to deliver a more robust communications platform. Offering a province-wide delivery service across five depots in Belfast, Bangor, Lisburn, Glenavy and Ballyclare, communications is critical to Balloo Hire’s business success. Significant growth in the commercial operations, expansion of its business services and the addition of new hire centres, led it to look for a more advanced network.

The company selected the costeffective and future-proof solution from eir Business NI. APOLLO LAUNCHES NEW MOBILE APP Apollo Fire Detectors has launched a new mobile app for iOS and Android devices to help users to be compliant with BS 5839-1 rules and regulations when installing fire detection and notification devices. In addition to the guide, there is an installation checklist enabling installers to monitor what has been completed. The app, which is available to download from the Apollo website, Google Play Store and Apple’s App Store, also features an XPERT card and DIL switch addressing system. This tool will be valuable for anyone addressing Apollo detectors on a system. The XPERT card can be simply addressed by inputting the address to see which pips to remove, or alternatively by selecting the removed pips to check the address of a preaddressed XPERT card. Similarly, with the DIL switch, the installer can find out how to set the switches to create the address required. This process can also be reversed to discover the address of a pre- addressed unit. STIFFER PENALTIES FOR ELECTRICITY AT WORK VIOLATIONS Since tougher sentencing guidelines were introduced for health and safety offences in February, many firms have been helping to drive compliance and reduce the number of accidents in the work place. The guidelines are directly applicable to electricity related accidents and cases where employees are put at risk due to failure to properly comply with the Electricity at Work Regulations. The emphasis has now changed so that fines apply

to putting employees at risk, not just accidents, and imprisonment is now more likely for directors, managers and employees, with higher fines of up to £10million for large companies who display a high level of culpability. To help get the message across, Martindale Electric has added some useful safety advice onto its website, including a video on how to implement safe isolation procedures and ensure compliance. W: www.martindale-electric.co.uk

Gewiss UK, the leading manufacturer of electrical and lighting solutions, has appointed Gino Stocchetti as its new General Manager. Gino joins Gewiss UK from Eaton, where he was UK Sales Manager, and will focus on business development and national contractor accounts. He has held a number of management roles within the electrical and lighting manufacturing sector. “GEWISS provides high-quality solutions and I am looking forward to increasing awareness of the offering within the market and continuing to develop strong relationships with our customers,” said Gino. ENERGY AWARENESS DAY AT LOUTH COUNTY COUNCIL

JCD GROUP TO BUILD TECHNOLOGY CAMPUS IN CORK An investment of over €200 million is to be made into the development of a number of data centres on the outskirts of Cork city by JCD Group, an Irish commercial property company. The data centres will be built as part of the redevelopment of the former Mitsui Denman site in Little Island, Cork. Planning permission is due in a number of weeks to transform the 32-acre site into a technology campus with over 275,000sqft of state-of-the-art data centre accommodation. It’s expected that the development will create 150 new jobs in Cork and will also lead to hundreds of additional

construction jobs during the build phase. The developers have access to a 60MW electrical grid connection to the adjoining substation in Little Island which will provide enough power to support the data centres while maintaining additional capacity to support future expansion. Last year, Cork was boosted from a connectivity perspective as a result of Hibernia Network’s landing its newest transatlantic cable in the county, meaning Cork now offers the lowest latency in the EU to the east coast of the US. SEAI APPOINTS NEW CEO

Jim Gannon.

The Board of SEAI has announced the appointment of Jim Gannon as CEO of the authority. He will lead the development and delivery of the authority’s new-five year strategy. Jim said, “The new White Paper and recent commitments made at COP21 in Paris provide Ireland with both challenges and significant opportunities over the coming period. As a result, Ireland is likely to experience change at an infrastructural scale, in addition to a technology-led democratisation of the energy system across electricity, transport and heat. I look forward to leading SEAI as it plays a central role in our transition to a more economically, socially and environmentally sustainable energy future.” W: www.seai.ie

Held recently at the Town Hall in Dundalk, Louth County Council’s Energy Awareness Day was deemed a huge success. Members of the public, staff and councillors dropped by and took part in the ‘Watt Challenge’ to see how they could generate electricity by pedal power. While there, they visited the ‘Watts it all About?’ interactive stand which allows you to see first-hand how much energy everyday appliances consume and how savings can be achieved. The local authority now has a dedicated European and Sustainable Energy Department which hosted this event and are always happy to deal with any queries. According to Louth County Council, it is well placed to achieve the Government’s National Energy Efficiency Action Plan, whereby a target of 33% energy efficiency improvement is to be achieved by all Irish public bodies by 2020. Just recently, the local authority’s Facilities Management and Sustainable Energy Office fitted new LED street lamps at County Hall, Dundalk. The new 35-Watt LED lamps replace the original 100-Watt SON lamps, reducing energy usage by 65% or over 8,300kWh, while also reducing carbon emissions by 4,300kgCO2 per annum. W: www.louthcoco.ie

ENERGY APPS ON THE UP According to a leading market research company, the market for utility apps has grown in recent years as customers become more aware of the data surrounding consumption. A report from Navigant Research stated that over 1.2 million energy-focused apps are downloaded each year and that it is relatively easy for a utility to deploy an app or a set of apps. Those that are designed well make it easy for customers to control their energy consumption. W: www.navigantresearch.com

EPA DIRECTOR GENERAL WINS DISTINGUISHED GRADUATE AWARD

SALE OF 4,900 ACRES TO FUEL DEBATE ABOUT DUBLIN WIND ENERGY The debate on the potential for a wind farm in the Dublin mountains looks set to be reopened with the pending sale of 4,900 acres (1,983 hectares) along the Dublin-Wicklow border. The land sale will be handled by agents, CBRE, on behalf of Nama, which is selling the land as part of the distressed assets held by the late Liam Maye, one of the developers of Dundrum Town Centre.

The asking price is expected to be in the region of €2.5million for the holding which mainly straddles the Dublin-Wicklow border within 15km of Dublin city centre and 3km south of Tallaght. Any attempt to put a wind farm on the site is likely to be resisted by conservation groups, trekkers and residents of the city and county. W: www.nama.ie

Branch Manager (and proud father), Austin Long and his wife accompanied Amy to the Shard hotel in London for the EDA lunch and formal presentation, where she was the only female product knowledge award winner amongst the rest of the award-winning high achievers from other companies. “Amy joined CEF Bangor three years ago when we lost a member of staff at short notice and needed someone to help out part-time,” said Austin. “Since then she’s

become an established full-time member of staff and is a highly regarded employee among her colleagues and customers alike.” Already holding the distinction of being the first female sales assistant employed by CEF in Ireland, Amy is undaunted by being a female in a male dominated industry and has set her sights high, with ambitions to progress through the company ranks to become CEF’s first female group manager. “She had two job promotion offers in her first year, as a sales representative for the company’s manufacturing facilities, but turned them down as she felt she needed to build up more experience and industry knowledge first,” said Austin. “She enjoys working in the Bangor branch, expanding her knowledge, and has built up an excellent relationship with our customers.” Amy’s main responsibilities include serving and advising at the trade counter,

telephone sales and quotes. Her formal training comprises sales training with Pinnacle Solutions, EDA Level 2 City & Guilds, fundamentals of electricity, and EDA Level 2 City and Guilds, lighting, both of which she passed with distinction. She also recently passed her fork lift test to help expand her skills. “I genuinely love my job,” said Amy. “There are different challenges every day, and I like building up relationships and mixing with the general public. Every day is different. Going to the Shard for the awards lunch and presentation was an amazing experience, it’s a very impressive building.”

STARS OF TOMORROW The day after the EDA’s Annual Awards Dinner in London, Amy was among 12 award-winning learners who took the highspeed lift to the 34th floor of the Shard to attend the 2016 EDA Education & Training Awards lunch. The 70 guests included EDA board members and ambassadors, the EDA’s training partners, and various branch managers who work with the winners. EDA President, Tom Jones congratulated the learners on their commitment to selfimprovement, urging them to continue their hard work and develop themselves through life-long learning. “It’s important to upskill, and the learners here today in this great building are to be justly rewarded,” he said. “Lifelong learning will be a crucial part of their career progression. Reach for the highest pinnacle you can,” he told them, “you are the stars of tomorrow.” T: 02891 456 880 E: sales.bangorni@cef.co.uk W: www.cef.co.uk/branches/bangorni

B

elfast-based Crown Industries has seen a lot of change over recent times as the organisation evolves and grows its service offering right across the geographical reach of the UK, Ireland and even the USA. Like many businesses, Crown was forced by the recession to look at its operating model in order to seek out competitive advantage and set its specialist nature a step above that of the competition. The company has used challenging trading conditions to re-align and re-focus its business strategy in line with a total IP services offering. This is now starting to bear fruit as customers demand

a greater level of IP convergence and specialism across varying communications disciplines. With a strong footing in both the blown fibre and data centre development sectors, the organisation has moved in recent times to embrace a full portfolio of IP security systems, converged DAS and Wi-Fi architecture, and fibre-to-the-desktop (FTTD) technology. Commenting on the journey, Strategic Development Director, Simon Murray, stated, “I think those across the industry in Northern Ireland have faced their own challenges over the course of the past few years, which has

“The organisation has moved in recent times to embrace a full portfolio of IP security systems, converged DAS and Wi-Fi architecture, and fibre-to-the-desktop (FTTD) technology.” forced a re-think at management level as to future strategic direction. “Our FOIS business was well established as one of the primary providers of IP cabling infrastructure in the province. However, our customers, and indeed the market, dictated that a more holistic approach to its service offering was required. As a leader, you adapt, you react, and you change in line with what your customers demand of you. “I’m not saying that it was all plain sailing. Some very difficult decisions needed to be taken to ensure that we were well positioned for the future, but that’s part and parcel of strategic planning. If you stand still and rest on your laurels, simply waiting for things to get better, you wake up some day and find that someone has

stolen the competitive impetus. “By re-shaping not only our core management team, but also our service offering at new geographical locations, we have positioned the business to properly compete post-recession, ensuring a stable and successful future. Like many contractors at home, GB has been a major area of concentrated focus over recent months and we have secured some excellent schemes in this region alone. “Our GB office has provided a platform to properly service this growth market whilst opportunities at home remain stagnant and unlikely to improve considerably in the immediate future. It’s important not only to diversify, as outlined, but also to spread your business risk.”

rown’s new model has certainly borne some fruit of late, with the company picking up some major commercial projects both in Northern Ireland and the wider GB market as customers seek out cross-functional IP specialisms under their single business entity. One customer has even taken the company stateside to West Virginia for its first pilot scheme in the US, with several more planned in the future. Data centres and associated cooling architecture have been a major area of growth for the Crown business as, locally, the province tries to play catch-up with the wider GB market and Republic of Ireland in offering secure hosting services for a growing portfolio of clients. Managing Director, Richard Finlay, commented, “We recognised the need to be more than a cabling company, as that came with its own limitations. Offering a limited portfolio in a market saturated with smaller competition was not a pathway to growth, which is why we are often considered the champion of the larger infrastructure schemes, not only because of their cross-functional IP nature and the necessary in-house specialisms, but also because of our size and financial clout to take such schemes on board. “Our data centre success did not come as such a surprise as we knew internally that we had the talent and capability to make it work. But, word of mouth, based on a few initial schemes, and the delivery success associated with such, have led to a growing portfolio in this specific sector with in-house specialisms on cooling, efficient power management, high-density network architecture and a supporting maintenance base. “If we continue to focus on this diversification with a greater geographical reach, I am confident that we will remain at the forefront of our industry in the future.”

CASE STUDY - CARTRAWLER

ALL SERVICES COMPLETES ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL CONTRACT, WITH CO-ORDINATION AND CO-OPERATION THE KEYSTONE TO SUCCESS…

CarTrawler canteen turns heads

A

ll Services has completed the electrical package for CarTrawler’s modern new staff canteen. A leading international travel-technology company which connects customers and travel companies to ground-based transport solutions, CarTrawler employs over 450 people in its Dublin, Boston and London offices. Dublin company, The Building Consultancy carried out the design and project management of the new 3,200sqft staff canteen for the CarTrawler offices in Dundrum, County Dublin, continuing the relationship between the two companies that has developed over the years. According to the company, the new canteen perfectly reflects CarTrawler’s innovative culture and communicates its people-focused philosophy. Hosting up to 150 people at a time, the canteen can be used throughout the day for different purposes, from lunch and tea breaks to informal meetings. The Building Consultancy made use of the exposed concrete ceiling and created a compelling urban space – the final result is a combination of striking geometric accents with a fresh palette and natural elements.

26 | ELECTRICAL MAGAZINE

The fit-out contractor on the project was All Systems Commercial Fitouts. M&E consultant on the project was Cormac Regan of LRH Engineering, while All Services, headed up by both Shane O’Kelly, and Robert Davitt, delivered the project’s entire electrical package. This consisted of lighting, emergency lighting, access control, fire alarm, general services, a new sub main distribution board and sub mains cable. The load to the restaurant proved too large, making a new sub main distribution board and sub mains cable necessary, and a large part of All Services’ work on the project. Mechanical services were carried out by Alpha Mechanical and consisted of Daikin VRV air con serving the seating area and a new Daikin heat recovery system supplying fresh air and including extract from the kitchen and general extract, along with hot and cold water services to the kitchen.

INNOVATIVE DESIGN Although not a substantial project in terms of size (All Services has worked on a variety of residential and commercial projects of different budgets and sizes), the design of the new canteen at CarTrawler made it

an interesting job for Shane and his team. “From the design end of things, this was a very funky looking canteen and so was perhaps an out-of-the-ordinary job for us. The light fittings that were installed, which included pendant style lights, Thorn Mini High Bays and linear fittings, were very modern and innovative, while the overall industrial aesthetic of exposed concrete slabs added to the overall urban feel of the project.” The kitchen features standard recessed modular fittings complete with an IP rated screen. Suspended linear light fittings were Infinitas Direct 50W 3K LED white C/W 3X5M Suspensions by Lidacel. Cage pendants were from National Lighting, bought through Edmundsons Glasnevin, as were the Thorn Glazier pendants. All the emergency lighting, emergency LED spots and emergency exits were manufactured by ROBUS LED and also supplied by Edmundsons, while the new main distribution board was purchased from Parkmore Electrical.

TEAM EFFORT Shane says that the level of co-ordination that existed between the various teams on the project contributed to the overall excellent working relationship on site and ensured that the project was completed to deadline. “Co-ordination was also essential with the fit-out contractor in respect to the Ecophon panels that were suspended from

the ceiling,” he stated. “Ecophon panels are ideal for a space like this one; they add value where acoustics are concerned, they conform to building standards and visually, they integrate well with the new design. “All the trades, along with the designers and fit-out contractor, worked extremely well together and ensured co-ordination was key. This made for a smooth, hasslefree build and allowed us to tackle the challenges presented to us head-on.” These challenges included upgrading the electrical supply to the kitchen due to the unprecedented load that was required from the kitchen. “The existing load from the switchroom wasn’t big enough so we had to install a very big cable from the switchroom up to the unit,” said Shane. “That was a fairly substantial part of our overall task on the project. It required time and, again, co-ordination from all teams.” A substantial amount of mechanical plant also went in, with an entire plant room in the basement dedicated to the kitchen. The completed canteen has gone down a storm with employees and serves as another jewel in the crown for both All Services and The Building Consultancy. “At the moment we’re lucky to be extremely busy, with jobs ongoing in both the commercial and residential sector. We’re delighted to have been a part of this particular project and would attribute the job’s success to the excellent relationships on site between all teams,” said Shane.

The level of co-ordination that existed between the various teams on the project contributed to the overall excellent working relationship on site.

CONTROLS

HELP CUSTOMERS ACHIEVE ENERGY SAVINGS BY PROVIDING CONTROLS THAT ARE EASY TO USE, SO THEY CAN REAP MAXIMUM BENEFIT, SAYS ANDY DOUGLAS, MANAGING DIRECTOR, TIMEGUARD…

Time control is still the bottom line of energy saving

T

ime control is at the heart of the Timeguard range – the clue is clearly in the name – and we have continued to invest in the new products that give installers new opportunities. For instance, our engineers have added timing functions to the ubiquitous FCU and Weathersafe outdoor sockets. Add our easy installation and guaranteed reliability, and you’re on to a winner. Outdoors: Our Vision outdoor power sockets have been a great success and, over the last few years, the many thousands that are in use have proved our claim that the full-size polycarbonate windows will stay clear and the patented neoprene seals will keep these units weather-safe. As people spend more and more time al fresco, it has made sense to cater for all their needs, and we offer models that combine sockets with RCDs and timers. • Heating: Combining our edge in time control within our heating range, both plug-in and hard-wired made perfect sense. The result is a fully comprehensive range including wireless options. • Safety: Our next design coup was to add timing functions to the ubiquitous fused connection units. Wherever you need an FCU (fused connection unit), it makes sense to provide the added benefit of energysaving programmable time control with the flexibility of push-button manual over-ride - especially when all the functionality is encased in a

single-gang unit and backed by the Timeguard five-year guarantee. Installers are now routinely choosing these combined units over basic FCUs for water and space heating. Another clever combination combines a 13A fused spur with an electronic boost timer that automatically turns appliances off after a pre-set time and, again, it all fits in a single-gang back box. Users simply press one button as many times as needed to choose how long they want the power for: 15 minutes, 30 minutes, one hour or two hours, and then the device counts down and switches off. There’s no danger of leaving heaters, fans or towel rails switched on for hours on end. • Lighting: Our light switches with integral electronic timers have always been an attractive option. Installation is as simple as changing the light switch and these

complement our already growing range, which includes delay switches, photocells, PIR and pneumatic options. However, there can be issues with these smart two-wire switches, no matter who manufactures them, when they are used to control LED or CFL lighting. The small current they draw to power themselves, while insignificant with incandescent lighting, can be enough to cause flicker with LEDs. Our design engineers in the UK have been first to crack the problem with our patented ZV900 Automatic Switch Load Controller. It’s a compact device, fitted just one per lighting circuit and will work with any make of smart wall switch, although we hope you’ll be choosing ours! CHARLOTTE BAMBER, SYSTEMS & COMPLIANCE DIRECTOR AT SPARKSAFE, DISCUSSES THE REQUIREMENTS OF LICENCE TO PRACTICE AUDITS…

Licence to Practice audits get underway

How to ensure LtP compliance?

NS TIO EC NN O

Responses by the main contractor and the electrical contractor to the audit process have been positive throughout. However, a number of common weaknesses have emerged. These include the following: • Late and incomplete workforce connections via the system. In some cases, work commenced prior to the workers being declared and connected to the project. • In a number of cases, the requirement for the main contractor to carry out random spot checks was not fully met.

T

he first in a rolling programme of site-based Licence to Practice audits got underway during June. SparkSafe audit staff have met with a number of main contractor and electrical contractor representatives, with the aim of determining and reporting on the compliance requirements of the Electrical Licence to Practice PGN 01/16 (copies are available to download at www. sparksafeltp.co.uk). The requirements of the PGN document became effective from February 1, 2016. Prior to this, a number of selected projects became the subject of a successful pilot programme.

I YS HL T N 2. MO

• The obligation to include the regular examination of the electrical contractors’ workforce composition was overlooked at monthly site meetings.

AUDIT BENEFITS The audit system is primarily designed to inform, educate and persuade stakeholders on the merits of employing an electrical workforce with the skills and qualifications that are matched to the technical and programme requirements of specific projects. Client organisations and main contractors will become better informed, and more discerning, about the skills and qualifications of individual workers. Those electrical contractors who invest in quality, safety and skills will gain opportunities over those who do not. Other emerging electrical contractors will be encouraged to progressively improve their standards through accredited training and qualifications, to meet the requirements of the client.

Should site audit reports reveal significant or recurring non-compliance with the requirements of the PGN, then poor performance measures are likely to be initiated by the client. In certain circumstances, the absence of compliance may be linked to future prequalification and contract award opportunities. From June, the settling in period for the Electrical Licence to Practice system will be replaced by a more formal obligation to be compliant with the requirements, as set out in the PGN.

AUDIT ACTIONS Preparation, awareness and monitoring are the main watchwords for main and electrical contractors. SparkSafe advises employers interested in winning public sector contracts to download and share the PGN01/16 document with contracts managers and those who are responsible for tendering within their organisations. Ignorance is not bliss. The Central Procurement Directorate and Centres of Procurement Expertise organisations are very keen to ensure that the construction industry supply chain is sufficiently aware, and complianceready, going forward. No one wants to miss out on future tendering opportunities or become hampered with the consequences of negative outcomes, arising from audits. Now is a good time to assess your readiness and compliance with the requirements of the electrical Licence to Practice system. TRAINING

SOME COMPANIES AREN’T RELYING ON THE GOVERNMENT TO SORT OUT THE SKILLS SHORTAGE IN THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY. WE SPOKE WITH MERCURY ENGINEERING ABOUT THE VARIOUS INITIATIVES THAT HAVE BEEN PUT IN PLACE TO ENCOURAGE TAKE-UP OF APPRENTICES AND GRADUATES...

The future is bright at Mercury

I

t seems that the training issue within the construction sector is finally being tackled. The CIF is being proactive by engaging with SOLAS (the further education and training authority in Ireland) on several innovative approaches to upskill people and get them on sites as quickly and safely as possible. The ‘Shared Apprenticeship Scheme’, which has been rolled out in Wexford, lets apprentices work with a number of companies whilst developing essential skills. A new website - www.apprentices. ie - that aims to match employers and job seekers to suitable apprenticeships across the country has also been launched. SOLAS is aiming to replicate the success of the

apprenticeship model in Switzerland, where 70% of all 15-19-year-olds participate in an apprenticeship. Whether SOLAS is entirely successful or not with its plan to replicate the Swiss apprentice model, construction firms at home are forging ahead with their own schemes to ensure that they have enough apprentices to carry out work. Mercury Engineering runs a number of schemes and scholarships that are intended to develop careers within the firm and create the foremen and project managers of the future that will continue to drive the company and ensure it remains at the top of its game. “One such scheme is a recognition award

system,” said Joanne Cluxton, Human Resources Manager at Mercury Engineering. “It’s a programme that’s been running for the past five years. At the end of each year, a nomination form, made up of seven categories, is sent out to all foremen who have the opportunity to nominate an apprentice of their choice. Categories include overall electrical apprentice, overall mechanical apprentice, safety quality performance, productivity, most improved apprentice, newcomer in the past year who’s made the greatest impact and, finally, apprentice who fully endorses Mercury’s values. Nomination forms are assessed by a

committee in head office and winners are chosen once exam results from SOLAS and other criteria, such as attitude and attendance, are taken into consideration. “We hold an awards ceremony every December where winners are presented with a certificate by CEO Eoin Vaughan along with a One4all voucher,” said Joanne. “It’s a really worthwhile scheme and we’ve found that our apprentices really engage with it.”

TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES Mercury also runs an apprentice scholarship scheme, whereby the successful applicant will continue their apprenticeship while doing a parttime course in the evenings or weekends in their chosen field. “At the end of their apprenticeship they won’t be just a qualified tradesperson, they’ll also have a higher certificate in their chosen area. At the end of their course, we guarantee to offer the apprentice a contract in their chosen area as a junior,” explained Joanne. Mercury has just started to recruit electrical apprentices for the first time in two years. “We don’t take on too many when we know we won’t have the work for them. We take enough apprentices so that we can keep them in employment on an ongoing basis,” said Joanne.

Other initiatives at Mercury include a workshop training scheme for apprentices, currently in planning. This will involve upskilling apprentices who aren’t on a scholarship and ensuring they’re rotated across several different sites and sectors. Mercury’s two-year graduate programme has been running since 2009. This year, the firm is looking to take on 25 third-level graduates. “Selected graduates are given a group project to work on, which is chosen by senior management within Mercury. At the end of six months, they present their project to senior management over three days. Six months later, they come back for another block of training which is all put together through Engineers Ireland,” continued Joanne. “Bringing apprentices through for four years and then finishing with them isn’t the goal at Mercury. We want them to finish their apprenticeship with us and then we can bring them into other roles within the business, whether that’s in an engineering capacity or in a trade capacity. We want to ensure they’re the best in the business and that we retain them after their apprenticeship. In time they’ll become our foremen or project managers and continue to progress within the company.”

Currently in his third year as an electrical apprentice at Mercury, Sean O’Sullivan applied for the scholarship scheme in the planning category. “My application was successful, so I’ll be starting in September,” said Sean. “I’m really delighted - it’s such a good opportunity. I’ve always been interested in the business aspect of things, so I chose the planning category as it involved scheduling and budgeting etc. I’ll be starting a higher certificate in building services in DIT in September on a part-time basis.” Mercury will pay for all of Sean’s college fees and will also offer him a fulltime salaried position in his chosen category, once he passes all his exams. “Mercury is going to invest money, time and training in me. The company doesn’t want to invest this money and have me walk off when I have my degree so it makes sense to offer me a role once I’m fully qualified,” said Sean. Throughout his apprenticeship so far, Sean has had the chance to work on a range of projects across several sectors. He started off on Intel in Kildare and he’s currently working on the new incinerator in Ringsend. “I’ve never been on temporary lay-off, Mercury has seen me through my whole apprenticeship with solid work. I’ve never had any reason to worry,” he added.

COMPANY PROFILE

Irwin’s new mechanical division will provide the complete M&E service

MECHNICAL, ELECTRICAL AND INTEGRATED FM SERVICES NOW AVAILABILE FROM IRWIN… Irwin Electrical has marked the company’s 20th anniversary by expanding into the mechanical sector and now offering a complete M&E service. Now known as Irwin M&E Limited, the company has officially launched a mechanical division that will build on its growing success in this area. Richard Megarity, Operations Director at Irwin M&E, explained, “This was a logical next step for us and we are now offering mechanical services alongside our established expertise in the electrical and integrated FM sectors. Both in terms of new build and maintenance contracts, the industry is now moving towards a more integrated approach with regards to M&E, so it is important that we are now able to react to this demand. “We have already completed a number of mechanical contracts, including the Cadogan Place Apartments in London, the awardwinning 5G Innovation Centre for the University of Surrey; and 4-5 Park Place, London, while we are two years into the Education Authority Western Region M&E term service contract, so we have a proven track record.” Heading up the new mechanical division at Irwin M&E is Glenn Coburn, Senior Mechanical Contracts Manager, who has been appointed recently alongside a number of new mechanical personnel.

“I am really looking forward to the new challenge at Irwin M&E,” said Glenn. “The company’s past success in the mechanical sector has provided us with a solid foundation to build on and we are already very busy, which is a great sign.” The mechanical division will enhance an already impressive service from Irwin M&E, which now includes mechanical and electrical installations for new build and restoration/refurbishment projects alongside maintenance and compliance testing services. Irwin M&E Limited has also integrated BIM into its services and has combined this with the latest 3D software and CAD technology. The company prides itself on building strong relationships with clients and, according to Managing Director, Keith Stewart, that will continue. “In the electrical sector we are known for going the extra mile and that will continue with our mechanical services,” he said. “It is that personal touch sets us aside. We are competitive on price and we provide high quality services, but we also think long-term to ensure we are in a prime position to look ahead confidently.” T: (NI) 028 028 3839 7990 or (RoI) 048 3839 7990 www.irwinm-e.com

CABLES

SLIMFLEX CATEGORY 6A PATCH CABLE OFFERS DOUBLE BENEFITS OF FLEXIBILITY AND SPACE SAVING IN HIGH DENSITY PATCHING AREAS…

Draka launches Slimflex space-saving Cat6a copper patch cables

C

ables and systems specialist Draka, part of the Prysmian Group, has launched a small diameter Category 6a patch cable. The cable’s reduced diameter gives it flexibility and saves space in high density patching areas. Called Slimflex, the 30AWG (American wire gauge) stranded copper cable occupies just 60% of the space required by standard 24AWG patch cords, which makes for easier system changes and additions. The cable’s smaller 4.5mm diameter saves space in racks and cabinets when compared to standard 6mm diameter patch cables. Slimflex’s tighter bend radius also makes for easier cable routing and simplified cable management, and it can improve airflow to help maintain equipment performance and reliability. The Slimflex patch cables have a white outer sheath and are available in lengths of 1m, 1.5m, 2m, 3m, 4m and 5m to suit the majority of patch applications. and comply with IEC 60332-1. The cables are fitted with RJ45 connectors which feature Draka’s unique tangle-free boot design and 1.27micron gold plated phosphor bronze plug pins to ensure the best connection over multiple mating cycles. Slimflex is suitable for a variety of applications, including 10GBase-T Ethernet, data centre input/output consolidation and server virtualization, backbone aggregation, high-density greenfield network racks, and brownfield cable managers running out of space. Lee Stokes, Product Manager for UC Connect, said, “Draka’s Slimflex, small diameter UC Connect patch cables deliver Category 6a performance, with a significantly tighter bend radius, for easier routing and enhanced cable management to facilitate moves, adds and changes in tight spaces.” T: (RoI) 042 9331 436 or (NI) 00353 42 9331 436 E: info@precisioncables.ie W: www.precisioncables.ie

CONSUMER UNITS

JASON HALLAM CPN-CUDIS, PROVIDES SOME CLARITY ON BS7671 AMENDMENT 3 REGULATION 421.1.201 METAL CONSUMER UNITS…

Your questions answered

Q

: Can I still fit plastic consumer units in a domestic dwelling even though they are glow wire tested to 960˚C? A: No, if an existing consumer unit within a domestic dwelling needs replacing, then a steel consumer unit conforming to BSEN61439-3 should be used. Industrial and commercial premises can still use plastic-style consumer units. Q: Can I fit a plastic-style consumer unit in a detached garage or shed/out-building? A: Yes, providing a risk assessment is carried out and documented to say that in the event of a fire, flames would not spread to the main dwelling (carrying out a risk assessment is fundamental in this instance). Q: Do I have to use fire-retardant glands and trunking? A: No, providing the IP integrity after the installation is maintained, which is IP4X on the top and horizontal surfaces and IP2XC elsewhere. However, the use of fire-retardant glands and trunking are not precluded. Q: Do I have to use intumescent pads and strips when installing a metal consumer unit? A: No. Unless they are provided with the consumer unit by the manufacturer, the use of them is not precluded. Q: Can I still fit a plastic consumer unit if it is enclosed in a steel enclosure? A: Yes, providing the IP integrity is maintained after the installation and meets the requirement of regulation 132.12 (accessibility of electrical equipment). Q: Do I have to use metal blanks for unused ways within a consumer unit? A: No, there is no provision to use metal blanks. However, if they are supplied by the manufacturer of the consumer unit, then they must be used.

Q: Can I add additional circuits onto an existing plastic-style consumer unit? A: Yes, providing the consumer unit is in good condition. However, do check for the quality of the consumer unit for cracks, or any other sign of damage, such as scorching, as it may need replacing. Q: Can I use a metal consumer unit on a TT system? A: Yes, you have to ensure that the supply tails enter the enclosure through an appropriate means to prevent damage to the insulation around the conductors. It is also important to tighten the tails that go into the incoming device within the consumer unit to the recommended torque settings as set out by the manufacturer. Ensure that the tails are fixed and secured so as to prevent disturbance. CPN-Cudis offers a range of tail glands that are suitable for the TT system supply. Q: What coding do I give to an existing plastic consumer unit that is in good condition, when carrying out an electrical inspection report? A: If a consumer unit is located under a wooden staircase or in a passage or escape route that would be used in the event of a fire, then a coding of C3 would be logged. Q: When installing a metal consumer unit, does the metal lid that covers the protective devices have to drop down? A: No, proving the consumer unit is of allsteel construction and has been tested to BSEN61439-3. The CPN-Cudis version has a lid that drops down; the base, lid and cover should all be metal. Q: Do I have to check all factory-fitted connections? A: Yes, ensure that all connections are tightened to the recommended torque settings and also check that polarity of the internal links is correct.

“Most of the fires documented were mainly caused by loose connections that caused excessive heat, resulting in the plastic-style consumer unit to loose structure.”

Loose Connections U Why the move from plastic

consumer units for domestic dwellings? Most of the fires documented were mainly caused by loose connections that caused excessive heat, resulting in the plastic-style consumer unit to loose structure. These, in most case, are located under staircases where things such as coats and other flammable products are stored. Once structure is lost, hot components are open to the elements and come into contact with flammable items, resulting in a potential fire. For further advice, installers can call the CPN-Cudis technical support line on (NI) 0161 765 3000 or (RoI) 0044 161 765 3000 and speak to one of the company’s qualified electrical engineers, who are always on hand to help. s panel builders drive toward smaller and lighter panels and increasingly look to save space and reduce panel weight, one way is to use more flexible cables, enabling lengths to be cut shorter in order to reduce space, weight and the cost of valuable copper. In response to this demand, Clynder Cables has developed its Superflex range – a selection of highly flexible tri-rated cables to accompany its standard range. The Superflex series comes in sizes from 10mm² up to 240mm², cables, which are so flexible it is possible to tie a knot in the 240mm², one of the

largest sizes. These Superflexes use Class 6 conductors – the diameter is the same as the regular Class 5 conductor used in the standard trirated cables, but the wire strands are smaller and there are a much greater number, improving the bend radius. Both Superflex and regular Trirated cabling are also available as double insulated, for use in instances where some mechanical protection

is required but cable trays are not practical or available. As the market also increasingly looks for cables with a lower fume emission in fire situations, there is also a growing demand for BS7211 compliant cables, such as Clynder’s 2491B cable. Clynder Cables’ products always guarantee the same colour consistency, with bright, deep colour shades which do not fade and do not vary from one batch to the next. POWER DISTRIBUTION SOLUTIONS - RITTAL

RITTAL’S POWER ENCLOSURES OFFER QUICK AND EASY INTERIOR INSTALLATION, WITH PLENTY OF SPACE…

Top tips for configuring enclosures

H

igh packing densities in enclosures and very short project times are just two of the challenges that switchgear manufacturers have to face today. From a commercial point of view, the interior of the enclosure must be fitted out as quickly as possible, while, at the same time, as many components as possible must be fitted into the enclosure. In order to meet these requirements, users need an enclosure system that offers a great deal of space and freedom for interior installation. In any electrical engineering company where enclosures are used, it is understood that once the enclosure has been selected, the next step is installing the necessary components (power distribution systems, switchgear, automation components, clamps etc) and wiring them up. All these components need to be arranged logically to make the switchgear or automation

solution easy to follow. At the same time, the relevant standards and the component manufacturers’ installation instructions have to be taken into account. But the time pressures are considerable; the interior fit-out must be completed as quickly as possible and, for switchgear manufacturers in particular, both time and cost pressures can be very high in many projects.

SPACE ON TWO LEVELS The TS 8 modular enclosure system from Rittal offers many well thought-out solutions that are not available elsewhere. The central element is the frame section of the TS 8 with its uniform 25-mm pitch pattern. Equipment can be installed very flexibly and ‘wasted space’ due to the limitations of the mounting options is practically non-existent. In addition to the frame section, two mounting levels are available that are used for installation. By using

“Equipment can be installed very flexibly and ‘wasted space’ due to the limitations of the mounting options is practically non-existent.”

DISTRIBUTION & SWITCHGEAR

BENEFITS AT A GLANCE: • Two mounting levels lower the use of space by 15%. • Optimum use of space between bayed enclosures by means of mounting plates and cable ducts. • Side panels can be assembled quickly and by just one individual. • The base system can be installed without using any tools. the external mounting level, up to 15% more space is available in the enclosure than with a single-level alternative. The space between the bayed enclosures can also be effectively employed. A mounting plate infill can be inserted between two TS 8-bayed enclosures, creating a continuous mounting plate across both that can be freely populated. Alternatively, the intermediate space can be optimally used for a cable duct. That allows more room for other components on the mounting plate, which solves the problem of increasing packing densities in the enclosure.

SAVE TIME Rapid installation pays off in two ways. Apart from the fact that a system can be completed more quickly, fewer staff are also needed, which therefore lowers costs. Many systems require two people to install them (for example, to mount the side panel of the enclosure). But, with the TS 8, the side panel can first be suspended from the enclosure. It then remains in position without having to be held by a second person before it is screwed tight. Other TS 8 assembly steps (for example, changing the door hinges

from one side to the other) follow the same principle, meaning it can be installed by one individual. Meanwhile, dispensing with tools will also speed up installation. For example, one feature of the TS 8 is the Flex-Block base, the panels of which can be simply clipped on. The entire base has been assembled in less than a minute during installation workshops at Rittal. With such well thought-out solutions, Rittal is supporting enclosure manufacturers in building space-saving switchgear that is quick to assemble.

MANUFACTURER - KANE ENGINEERING

GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT STRATEGY ENSURES KANE ENGINEERING LTD LOOKS FORWARD TO THE FUTURE WITH CONFIDENCE…

Investing for growth

2

016 is another milestone for Kane Engineering, marking 45 years in the LV switchgear business. However, not being a company to rest on its laurels, the Newtownards-based LV switchgear specialist has been investing heavily for a new phase of growth and development. Company Director, Damien Kane, stated, “Last summer, we made the decision to lease the unit next door and knock through the factory wall, increasing production space by around 6,000sqft. This has proved to be a wise decision as, this year, we have seen some of our biggest ever switchboards in production, including a 24-metre long twin 2MVA package sub-station for a data centre client.” Kane Engineering’s switchgear business now stretches the length and breadth of the UK and Ireland, ranging from prestige local projects such as the new Waterfront Hall Exhibition Centre (completed earlier this year for Harvey Group), to various sites in London, where Kane was the preferred LV switchgear supplier on projects including the National Army Museum (Gilbert Ash/ Stothers M&E), and the refurbishment of UCL Wates House (Gilbert Ash/Vaughan Engineering). Kane’s current investment strategy is under-pinned by a strong forward-order book, and the recognition that customers are demanding a sustained delivery of highquality products, backed up by the highest levels of customer service.

Today we have over 30 employees, with our Engineering Manager leading a team of five electrical project engineers, working on a variety of industrial and commercial projects for customers throughout the UK and Ireland, and our Production Manager leading a team of 18 production operatives in the workshop. “We also have a dedicated site services engineer for the installation and commissioning of our new LV panels, and to

look after ongoing customer requirements for service, alteration or extension to a wide range of existing LV switchboards.”

PRIMARY PARTNER On the product side, Kane Engineering has long been known as one of Schneider Electric’s primary partners in Northern Ireland - having first introduced the ‘Merlin Gerin’ brand here in 1976. In 2016, Kane has added another string to that bow by being appointed as Northern Ireland’s only ‘Smart Panel Partner’ for Schneider’s new range of ‘Smart’ (Internet enabled) LV switchboards and intelligent metering systems. Kane Engineering has recently secured several new contracts which further strengthen the order book right into 2017/18, most recently winning the LV switchgear contract from Mercury Engineering for the new Ulster University Campus in Belfast city centre. TOOLS AND TESTING

KLAUKE LAUNCHES NEW WIDE-RANGE BOOTLACE FERRULE CRIMPING TOOL…

Simple solution from Klauke

W

ith the K 30/6 K, Klauke has introduced a neat solution for crimping insulated and non-insulated bootlace ferrules from 0.08 – 16mm2 onto the market. Normally to cover this range of wire sizes, an installer would typically require at least three different tools. Now with just a single tool, the installer can keep the weight and cost of his tool bag to a minimum. The clever mechanism has a smooth ratchet control which moves six precise jaws, producing a neat hexagonal crimped result. This has the benefit of ensuring the termination remains as round as possible, fitting directly into the equipment without any need for ‘rounding’ square corners. To ensure the ferrule is always located exactly in the middle of the jaws, a clever positioner has been added to keep the ferrules centred. This guide can be relocated on the reverse side for left-handed users. Under the part number K306K, it can handle both single and double-entry ferrules and possesses the quality you would expect from a German-made product. It features non-slip handles and a name tag field inside the handle to identify it’s yours.

The launch of the K 30/6 K is part of a wide range of impressive products developed by the experts at Klauke. The new product is available from all branches of Demesne Electrical Sales. BESPOKE LED LIGHTING SOLUTION PROVIDED FOR NEW HALL AT MAGHERAGALL PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH…

Singing Hilclare Lighting’s praises

T

he lighting needs of a new church hall at Magheragall Presbyterian Church just outside Lisburn have been met by Hilclare Lighting. With different requirements for both the interior and exterior of the impressive new building, Hilclare Lighting worked closely with electrical contractor, Scotts Electrical Services to deliver an effective yet efficient solution. Steven McMurray, Hilclare Lighting Ltd’s Project Engineer for Northern Ireland, explained, “Aside from the

main hall, the project included a lot of meeting rooms, a kitchen and also exterior lighting requirements, so we had to provide a solution for each area that linked into the overall lighting design. “Energy efficiency was also an important element, so we introduced a wide range of LEDs throughout the project that will keep the church’s running costs down. We also designed the lighting controls for the project. These include dimming and daylight sensors, which will again help to reduce costs.”

Hilclare’s Fuente and Bandera combine perfectly to provide effective and efficient LED lighting.

“We enjoy being set a challenge and, even more so, being able to deliver.”

The project demonstrates the strength in depth of the Hilclare Lighting range. The main hall is now lit by the Santona IP54 sport light - a T5 fluorescent high-bay luminaire that is designed with surface, trunking or cable tray mounting options. The other internal Hilclare lighting solutions include the Bandera and the Fuente. The Bandera is a range of narrow, medium and wide beam LED downlight luminaires, while the Fuente is a range of wall-mounted LED luminaires suitable for foyers, meeting rooms, display areas and other commercial applications, such as shops. Externally, the Alicante LED wall light is a contemporary and robust amenity wall light, while the Coruna range of IP65 LED floodlights enhance the building while reducing both light pollution (sky glow) and light trespass. Steven added, “We were delighted to again be teaming up with Scotts Electrical Services on this project and to be able to provide a tailored solution for this excellent project. We enjoy being set a challenge and, even more so, being able to deliver.”

G4S FIRE & SECURITY SYSTEMS (UK) PROVIDES A HIGH-END, MULTI-DISCIPLINE PROTECTION SOLUTION TO ONE OF NORTHERN IRELAND’S LEADING HEALTHCARE FACILITIES…

G4S helps create a safer environment

G

4S Fire & Security Systems (UK) was selected by Harvey Group Plc to deliver a comprehensive range of market-leading fire detection and security systems to Ballymena Health and Care Centre, part of the Northern Health and Social Care Trust. This state-of-the-art centre is the largest to date in Northern Ireland and offers a wide range of services, including rehabilitation and diagnostic services (such as physiotherapy, podiatry and community dental); children’s department; general practitioner practices; GP out-of-hours service; acute outpatient clinics; mental health clinics; and onsite pharmacy. Once again, G4S demonstrated its ability to provide a high-end, multi-discipline protection solution to one of Northern Ireland’s leading healthcare facilities. The overall solution was made up of best inclass-systems which included fire detection and alarm (FDA); public address/voice alarm (PA/VA); disabled persons refuge; IP high

definition (HD) CCTV; access control; and intruder alarm.

WORKING IN PARTNERSHIP With one of the strongest working partnerships in the industry, built over 30 years, G4S and Honeywell collaborated once again to provide FDA to protect the patients and staff of this multi-use healthcare facility. G4S installed an L1 Gent Vigilon FDA system consisting of over 650 field devices and two networked panels, coupled with a Honeywell PA/VA system consisting of over 1,000 speakers. The PA/VA solution has been installed to help the staff communicate with visitors and alert them in an emergency situation. The Honeywell solution was chosen as it offered the capability and flexibility demanded by this unique environment. Robert Abraham, Account Director at G4S, said, “We have worked with Honeywell products for over 30 years and recognise and apply the benefits this specific solution can bring to a very

busy and multi-faceted building.” Conscious of the disruption caused by false alarms to the many functions of this building, Robert continued, “One of the great benefits of the Honeywell system is its ability to detect real fires quickly. The S-Quad devices, installed throughout the building, incorporate the most advanced form of multi-sensor detection, which will overcome the risk of unwanted alarms.”

SEAL OF APPROVAL G4S is an Elite Technology Centre, the highest level of Approved Systems Integrators that form part of the Gent 24 Network. Gent only award the Approved Systems Integrators status to independent fire specialist companies that have been selected, trained and approved, based on their extensive capabilities and considerable experience in the fire industry. G4S successfully managed the challenge of protecting the complex and intricate layout of ceiling voids. William McNally,

Project Manager at G4S, said, “One of the challenges we faced was the difficulty in protecting ceiling voids with a network of air aspirating systems. Multiple compartments were created by the locations of structural beams, and we needed a versatile and reliable solution to provide effective coverage. Facing and overcoming this challenge is testimony to working with industry-leading manufacturers.” In addition to delivering fire protection systems, G4S installed a comprehensive suite of security systems including IP HD CCTV, access control and intruder alarms.

LATEST TECHNOLOGY G4S continues to lead the way in providing customers with the very latest in IP HD CCTV technology in the form of the industryleading brand Avigilon. Fifty IP HD CCTV cameras were installed to provide excellent coverage of key areas in and around the centre. Jonathan McDonald, Systems Sales

“The S-Quad devices, installed throughout the building, incorporate the most advanced form of multi-sensor detection, which will overcome the risk of unwanted alarms.” Consultant at G4S, said, “We are delighted to have been given the opportunity to build on our portfolio of Avigilon projects by installing the very latest IP HD CCTV technology in Ballymena Health and Care Centre. We understand clearly the benefits that IP HD and Avigilon, have over the competition. After all, the primary objective of a CCTV system is to see exactly what is going on. “However, there are far more benefits of IP HD CCTV than having a crisp, clear picture. For example, taking the lobby area in isolation, we installed five 5.0 mega pixel fixed lens cameras that captured an incredible level of detail of persons entering, leaving and circulating in this busy part of the centre. To cover that same space with older, analogue technology, with the same level of

detail, would take upwards of 20 cameras. So now, not only do IP HD CCTV cameras benefit evidence gathering but they have a positive impact on the overall aesthetics of the impressive lobby area in Ballymena Health and Care Centre.” In this application, the Avigilon system demonstrated its great flexibility by facilitating up to 10 concurrent users of the same system spread across the various departments, all having unique log-in credentials and access to specific cameras. Jonathan added, “Another major benefit is ‘lossless playback’. Footage can be reviewed with multiple zoom on playback, with no degradation of the image. This alleviates a common problem with analogue systems, where high levels of compression can often leave the image unreadable.”

ATLAS LAUNCHES NEW WEBSITE AS PART OF MAJOR REBRAND TO REFLECT THE COMPANY’S WIDER AMBITIONS BEYOND FIRE AND SECURITY…

Atlas’s new website makes a world of difference

F

ormerly known mainly for its fire and security offering, Atlas’s recent rebrand has been consolidated by the launch of its new website. Visit www.atlasworld.co.uk and you will learn all about the company’s expansion into offering a complete solution, from initial design through to supply, installation and commissioning, as well as an ongoing monitoring, management and maintenance service. “The old website dealt with only the fire and security side of the operation,” said Sales and Marketing Director, Robert Creagmile. “We also had an Atlas Energy website, which was separate from this. Following the company’s rebrand, we wanted everything under the Atlas umbrella, so

we created one website to satisfy all functions - fire and security, energy, audio visual, and maintenance. “The new website encompasses the fresh new Atlas brand and is packed full of useful information,” continued Robert. “It’s very interactive, crisp and clean, with our recognisable branding throughout. Visitors to the site will find case studies of all our projects across the different areas, and the website generally contains a lot more information on the services that we provide, with clearly defined sections on each area of expertise. We also have a news section to keep everyone up-to-date with our latest developments, services and staff news. “Overall, as well as showcasing

projects, the new website is a better reflection of the company’s professionalism and position as a market leader in what we do.”

GLOBAL VISION

“Following the company’s rebrand, we wanted everything under the Atlas umbrella.”

With over 30 years in the fire and security industry, Atlas Fire & Security (NI) was a highly respected name within this competitive marketplace. However, the company’s ambitions have expanded beyond fire and security, hence the rebranding as Atlas, and its new maxim, ‘A world of difference’. John Nesbitt, Managing Director, explained, “We’ve grown beyond all recognition from our early days, and this rebranding is a better reflection of our overall service offering. While

ESP OFFERS ADVICE ON THE INTERNATIONAL STANDARDS FOR SIGN REGULATIONS...

Safe signage are you up to date?

S

igns are an important part of health and safety in and around the work place. Introduced in 2013, the British Standard relating to safe signage - BS EN ISO 7010 - is still relatively new and there is still some confusion surrounding it. BS EN ISO 7010 is an international standard for consistent safety sign regulation across Europe. It specifies safety signs that use standardised symbols instead of words, and reduces the potential for confusion and accidents by ensuring there is only one sign for each meaning. The date for adoption was January 2013, when it replaced the previous British Standard BS5499-5. The standard applies to all locations where safety issues must

be addressed, including workplaces and other buildings, ships and public areas; as well as signs that appear in manuals, notices, product labelling, and escape and evacuation plans. Currently, there is no legal obligation to change your signs and it is highly unlikely that any such requirement will ever be introduced. For the time being, you can keep your old signs according to the previous BS 5499. However, considering the functionality and practicability of the new signs, you may want to consider upgrading your signs to the new regulations immediately. Before 2013, the traditional emergency sign used above doorways to identify the escape route pictured a DOWN arrow. Under the

standard of BS EN ISO7010 the DOWN arrow should only be used to identify a change of level going down (for example at the top of a staircase). Following the introduction of BS EN ISO7010 the directional arrow above a corridor doorway should be the UP arrow. This is to inform the occupants that they need to carry straight on. We know that there is an issue, as here at ESP we still sell three times as many down arrow products as up ones. The proportion should be the other way around. Make sure you are not caught out. ELECTRICAL CONTRACTOR THE JUNCTION, DUNGANNON

Welcome to The Junction AWARD-WINNING ELECTRICAL CONTRACTOR, GR WHITE LENT THEIR EXPERTISE TO THE JUNCTION IN DUNGANNON TO GREAT EFFECT…

A

mixed-use £3.75million community development built by QMAC Construction Ltd and designed by Hall, Black & Douglas Ltd, The Junction in Dungannon is part of a multi-million European investment project in the town. It sits on the outskirts of the busy town and comprises office space and meeting rooms for three anchor tenants – STEP (South Tyrone Empowerment Programme), Inspire Mental Health and Willowbank. Extra flexible, multi-purpose spaces for community use, including meeting rooms, training facilities and exhibition spaces are also included as part of the overall project. Electrical contractor on the complex project was award winning Fermanaghbased company GR White & Son Ltd who carried out the complete package of electrical installation works on the Junction, including lighting and emergency lighting, fire and security installation, specialist data and ICT installation, PV installation and switchgear installation to deliver a mixed use community facility in the busy Dungannon town centre totalling 2,140sqm. Although no one particular aspect of the project presented any specific challenges to the experienced team at GR White & Son, the lighting and PV had to be designed and installed to the specified BREEAM calculations. To achieve this, the company worked closely with Dynamic Design (electrical consultant on the project) to meet the calculations. Energy-efficient light fittings were supplied by ERCO Lighting. These measures resulted in energy savings for the end users. The company also worked closely with security specialist, Euro Security & Fire to establish a fire and security system which was site specific and relevant to the end user.

INTRICATELY DESIGNED LIGHT FITTINGS Another important aspect of the project that had to be considered was the unique and intricately designed light fittings installed by GR White & Son. These included an Olympic Style Ring fitting which was installed at a 12m height in the central atrium area. The fittings were in keeping

PROJECT PROFILE

“Our team worked together to utilise best practice installation methods which were teamed with efficient procurement to deliver the project on time, to the desired quality and specification.” with the contemporary and spacious interior of this project. Internal lighting specified for the Junction complements the high levels of natural light which manages to infiltrate every aspect of the building. Other considerations that the team had to remain mindful of throughout the project included the strict programme of works that had to be adhered to and the fact that such a labour-intensive project required several different trades on site at any one time. GR White & Son also had to be cognisant of the architectural features, such as acoustic plasterboard, central atrium and exposed brick work at all times and to ensure that they stayed as they were. The team at GR White & Son were more than able to provide the necessary resources to meet the project requirements alongside a first-class team management structure comprising Contracts Manager, Jeffrey Bryans and Site Foreman, Stuart Hall. Commenting on the project, Jeffrey Bryans, said, “Our team worked together to utilise best practice installation methods which were teamed with efficient procurement to deliver the project on time, to the desired quality and specification.”

Community rights-based organisation STEP, the organisation that owns the building, has a very clear vision for the Junction – to provide a shared space and hub that will allow everyone in the Dungannon community to enjoy a whole host of activities, from workshops and meetings to training and events. Rodney White, Managing Director at GR White & Son, has praised the excellent relationships between the various teams on-site that ensured the project ran smoothly and was completed to deadline. “We are delighted to have completed this prestigious project alongside QMAC Construction. I congratulate Jeffrey and Stuart and the site team for fulfilling the project requirements and delivering this project to the specified requirements,” he said. The Junction is just one example of the high standards consistently delivered by GR White & Son. Operating for over 40 years, the company traditionally maintains a strong presence within the healthcare sector. That’s not however, the only area that the company excels in; education, utility and public projects are all sectors GR White & Son has become synonymous with. Projects also aren’t confined to Northern Ireland, with jobs ongoing in the

Republic of Ireland, Isle of Man, Scotland and England. The firm recently announced an additional 20 new jobs, a positive move that’s the result of a shift towards developing work within the renewable energy sector. Managing Director, Rodney White said, “We have extensive experience working on a wide range of projects. However, regardless of the project, we still provide the same high quality.”

KCC ARCHITECTURAL PROVIDES A COMPREHENSIVE SERVICE TO THE M&E CONTRACTOR AT THE JUNCTION PROJECT…

Co-ordination is key at The Junction

T

he success of any project comes down to co-ordination, and at The Junction Building, KCC Architectural highlighted how it delivers a complete coordinated solution. From the ironmongery installed on all doors, the door automation and the movable and stacking wall through to the access control and door entry systems throughout the entire building, KCC’s expertise helped make a complex job simple. Tony Campbell, Sales Manager at KCC Architectural, explained, “The brief we received from the design team was to deliver a full package solution for the functional requirements of the doors that met security demands but also allowed staff to move freely between the various sections of the building. Our all-inclusive solution allowed us to provide a fully integrated package that is not only simple for the end user but also proved to be straightforward in terms of the installation process.” This is one of the reasons why KCC is so successful. Main contractors and

M&E contractors can choose to source ironmongery, movable and stacking walls, door automation, access control and door entry from various individual manufacturers and installers or simply opt for the complete solution from KCC. Over the years, the company has created and maintains an excellent reputation for providing a comprehensive service for every type of project, large or small, simple or complex. KCC’s commitment to providing quality products and services results in unequalled levels of support, including a full project management service, from design to manufacturing through to installation and on-going maintenance. The company also prides itself on embracing robust working practices across the entire organisation; this underpins KCC’s dedication to providing a holistic, best practice approach to meet the demands of modern construction. A perfect example of this unrivalled service can be seen through the solution provided by the team at KCC for The Junction,

which managed the complete project from conception to completion. KCC has the proven skills to get the job done to specification, on time and on budget. “That is why our one-system-solution is so popular with architects and contractor as it simplifies the entire process without diluting the level of innovation,” said Tony. “The Junction Building is the perfect illustration of how we can deliver such high standards from the design stage right through to installation and maintenance and servicing.”

LED LIGHTING

DES DUIGNAN, AURORA’S IRELAND SALES DIRECTOR, SUGGESTS A SLEEK LED LIGHTING SOLUTION DESIGNED FOR RESIDENTIAL PROJECTS…

E-fficient and E-asy on the eye!

L

ED downlights can be used to great effect in the home, but achieving a sleek, uniform appearance alongside ambience and lighting efficacy throughout a residential scheme can prove difficult. Aurora’s Enlite E8 and E5 integrated LED fire rated downlights, presented in the Enlite Edition 4 of the ‘Lighting Essentials’ catalogue, have lumen outputs that offer exceptional power and a choice of warm or cool white colour temperatures. When considering kitchen and bathroom lighting, areas where owners usually prefer a large amount of light, we recommend the E8 with an output of 595lm from only 8W. To create a more relaxed ambience in bedrooms and living rooms, the E5 will deliver a softer result using 380lm from 4.5W version. Apprentice recruitment advice for electrical contractors

E

TT is offering an advisory and support service to those employers with possible and planned apprentice recruitment needs. Although the organisation will not be in a position to directly train apprentices going forward, it is, nevertheless, well placed to liaise with local schools and the NI Careers Service on behalf of the industry. During recent years, many electrical employers have reported difficulties in recruiting and retaining suitable young people for their apprenticeship training requirements. These difficulties arise for a number of different reasons 1 In some cases, the construction industry is poorly perceived by prospective entrants, when compared to other industries. As a result, school leavers and other young people are often drawn towards new and emerging skill training sectors. Tip: If you are offering an excellent apprenticeship experience, why not let prospective applicants know? Consider using social media to get the good news out. 2 Low application levels from talented young people may be linked to the new norm of the minimum apprentice wage

in our sector. Money talks, and many suitably qualified young people will seek opportunities to earn industry pay rates elsewhere. Advice: Industry pay rates for a new apprentice start at £4.27/hr. The minimum wage rate is £3.30/hr. Who would you choose to work for? 3 Some electrical employers leave recruitment towards the end of the annual recruitment cycle. As a result, the best, and perhaps most suited, of the school leaving population are pre-recruited, or recruited by other sectors during the early part of the summer months. Tip: Advertise your apprenticeship vacancy free on the ETT recruitment page. ETT will make sure that it’s well circulated. 4 High schools and grammar schools seek to retain the best students for ‘A’ level and higher education pathways. The industry sometimes fails to produce a compelling training and employment proposition to counter the position of the schools. Advice: Seek applicants with Maths, English and other STEM subjects at grade A*-C; the higher the grade, the better. 5 Employers who make use of good recruitment and selection practice tend to outperform those who do not, in terms of appointing good apprentices. Only a few employers make appropriate use of structured application forms, interview techniques, and work experience appraisal opportunities. Tip: Take time to follow through with reference checks. Find out what a school is prepared to say about the applicant. Make use of open questions during your enquiries, eg, ‘Please describe the applicant’s attitude towards co-operating with others?’ If you would like any help or advice on recruitment, please call the team now, who will be happy to help. M&E Contractor THRIVING LIFE CHURCH, NEWTOWNARDS

A YOUNG COMPANY WITH A MATURE APPROACH, CORE M&E SERVICES PUTS COMMUNICATION AT THE HEART OF THRIVING LIFE CHURCH PROJECT…

Core M&E Services help put life back into church building

T

hriving Life Church in Newtownards has been singing the praises of Core M&E Services after it successfully completed the mechanical and electrical installations during Phase 2 of the construction project, which resulted in the building opening to the community in June after a 12-month build. A young company with a mature approach, Core M&E Services was established by John Funston, Stephen Hollinger and Philip Miley. John McCorry came on board to set up the mechanical division and is now the company’s Operations Director. “Our primary trading areas are Northern Ireland, England, Scotland and the Republic of Ireland, but we have the capability to carry out international contracts too and recently completed an 18-month £3million project in Sri Lanka for the refurbishment of the British High Commission,” said John. “We do everything from large scale commercial projects to retail, new-build and fit-out, offering a range of contracts, from specification and drawings to design and build.” John Funston added, “What makes Core M&E Services unique is the level and scope of experience we can bring to any job. We have the practical skills, industry knowledge and professionalism to deliver the highest quality end product. Many of our team developed their skills as tradesmen so we can offer an unparalleled understanding of our clients’ aims and objectives.” John continued, “We are dedicated to seeing that all our clients’ needs are met. From the moment we receive a job to the hour of handover, we review the process along the way, and our packages are tailored to suit expectations. As a result, Core M&E Services is getting an increasing amount of repeat custom from satisfied clients, and new clients from word of mouth recommendation. “So that we can have continued company development, feedback is very important to us. We always strive for quality and want to know what we can do better so that, if we are fortunate enough to work with a

PROJECT PROFILE

client again, we can do an even better job for them.” Having already completed Phase 1 of the Thriving Life Church build project - when the existing building was stripped back and Core carried out a full M&E design and build installation in partnership with Par Works Solutions, the team once again won the tender for the Phase 2 building situated beside it on the Crawfordsburn Road. “Phase 2 was procured under a specification and drawings contract, but there was also design development with client consultation,” explained John. “Phase 2 of Thriving Life Church is more of a support building for the church, and includes offices, educational rooms, children’s play areas, crèche facilities, lounges and breakout areas, a large kitchen and coffee dock, and more. It’s a very impressive two-storey, 3,200sqm building with a large atrium and an auditorium with stage and seating for around 700.

STATE-OF-THE ART SYSTEMS The lighting at Thriving Life Church is a key feature of the attractive new building. With a big emphasis on performance and

quality, the lighting also has a high designled appeal that blends perfectly with the modern, energising ethos of Thriving Life Church. Core M&S Services installed all the LED and high-performance lighting. “The auditorium lighting was very high spec,” said Core’s Electrical Director, Robert Brown. “The black lighting is particularly effective against the black backdrop of the stage. It’s not as reflective and it creates a magnificent effect, especially as it is linked to digital dimming systems which can change the mood of the lighting instantly.” In a lot of areas, the lighting is built into furniture, and the LED ROBUS lighting in areas such as the coffee dock also make a strong design statement. In the other areas of electrical installation, the team from Core carried out their job with skill and precision, using some of the latest smart technologies on the market to ensure the building is energy managed and metered. The systems used were state-ofthe art - for example, the central heating can be controlled in zones from an iPad, phone or other smart device, providing direct access to the heating controls and biomass boiler. Core M&E Services also future-proofed the app system, which meant that the

team didn’t need to install as much interconnecting cabling between internal and external plant areas, as communication can be carried out over the network. The project was not without its challenges however, mostly surrounding spatial coordination. Because of the large spaces and high ceilings, Core manufactured industrial tray ceilings which give a modern look that complemented the overall design and, with the installation of a very bespoke gantry system with large downstand structural steel beams, the team from Core had to a design a ventilation system to suit. “We did this in liaison with the client and it worked very well

The electrical services by Core M&E at Thriving Life Church included: • Lighting installation • Containment works • Earthing and bonding • Mains power distribution • Data cabling • Fire alarm and detection installation • Final circuits, small power and lighting • Emergency lighting installation and signage

LV Power Distribution THRIVING LIFE CHURCH, NEWTOWNARDS

BESPOKE LV SWITCHBOARD FROM HANOVER SYSTEMS PROVIDES THE POWER HUB FOR THRIVING LIFE CHURCH BUILDING…

Powerful solution from Hanover Systems

W

ith an ever-increasing portfolio of work across a broad range of sectors, power distribution specialist company, Hanover Systems provided invaluable industry expertise to the Thriving Life Church project. “On this particular project we provided the LV switchboard, which we manufactured in our workshop in Belfast,” said Hanover Systems’ Managing Director, Alastair Hair. “It’s a Form 4, Type 2 LV switchboard incorporating an NIE facility and providing the latest energy metered solutions. The result is that the meters can be networked to help reduce energy usage within the building. “We recognise and appreciate that not all our customer’s needs are the same, so we work closely with them to ensure that we not only deliver a product, but that we provide an engineered solution. The LV

switchboard for Thriving Life Church was manufactured by us to ensure that we were able to come up with the bespoke, high spec solution required.” This detailed, thorough approach to business proved to be particularly important in this church building project where the limitations on space threw up some challenges. “Although the building has a large auditorium and some spacious rooms with lofty ceilings, the area set aside for the plantroom was quite small,” explained Alastair. “Space was limited and we had to modify our designs several times in order to facilitate the area set aside for the installation.” This close liaison with the other key teams working on a project, combined with an ability to adapt to the unique circumstances that present themselves with

each individual project, are key factors in the continuing success of Hanover Systems – that and the company’s welldeserved reputation as an expert in its field, and a one-stop-shop for distribution and switchgear systems and equipment. Recognising companies with similar high standards, Alastair was delighted to find himself working with Core M&E Services on the Thriving Life Church project. “We’ve completed a couple of projects with Core in the past and found them to be pleasure to work with - a very professional organisation,” he said. “They haven’t been in the market for that long, but having recently been introduced to them and seen the team in action, I believe they have a very bright future ahead and we are looking forward to continuing the relationship on other projects.”

n excellent working relationship between YESSS Electrical and Vent Axia meant that the commercial heat recovery and ventilation service to Thriving Life Church went off without a hitch. Sentinel Totus 2 D-ERV from Vent Axia’s commercial heat recovery range was supplied to the project by YESSS Electrical Belfast East branch, and its manager, Eamon McAleese. Both Eamon and Paul Cassin, Vent Axia’s Sales Manager for Northern Ireland, opted for this product due to its high-efficiency counterflow heat recovery cell which achieves up to 90% energy recovery. “With the modern design and air-tightness of the project, a heat recovery system was essential for energy efficiency, where some of the heat that would normally be dumped is gained back,” said Paul. YESSS Electrical, a major trading partner of Vent Axia, has enjoyed an excellent relationship with the firm for several years.

Eamon added, “With Vent Axia, we were able to offer competitive rates on the units supplied to Thriving Life Church and, moreover, were able to offer a premium product from a reputable manufacturer at competitive prices. We also received excellent technical back-up from Paul.” The easy working relationship was further facilitated through Paul’s own previous association with the main contractor, Core M&E Services. “I aided the design team to actually get these particular units specified for the project,” he said. “It was a combination of old contacts and current customers that made this project flow easily.”
