Artistic Director Barry Shiffman’s classical season starts with the incomparable men’s a cappella ensemble Chanticleer, renowned pianists including Charlie Albright and Isata Kanneh-Mason, a holiday concert by the Boston Brass, the legendary Zukerman Trio, an intriguing program from the critically acclaimed Horszowski Trio and a powerhouse program from all-star members of the Chamber Society of Lincoln Center. The folk and pop series brings such stars as the great Suzanne Vega, mandolin showstopper Chris Thile and veteran alternative rock heroes 10,000 Maniacs. Jazz concerts feature the heady and dynamic pianist Jason Moran and a set from the always alluring vocalist Stacey Kent. We also bring back our high definition broadcasts from the Metropolitan Opera, National Theatre of England and the Bolshoi Ballet.

Boston based Project STEP (String Training Education Program) has provided talented young musicians that identify with historically underrepresented groups in classical music with comprehensive music instruction. Under the direction of their new musical director Joshua Weilerstein, the acclaimed Phoenix Orchestra is renowned for its energetic playing, versatile programming and an individualistic approach to larger orchestral repertoire. Phoenix has performed at a variety of venues in the Greater Boston Area, including OBERON, the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum and the Center for Arts at the Armory among others. The program includes works by Caroline Shaw, Ravel and Aaron Copland’s Appalachian Spring.

ZUKERMAN TRIO

The Horszowski Trio has quickly become a vital force in the international chamber music world. Since their debut performance in New York City in 2011, they have toured extensively throughout North America, Europe, the Far East and India, traversing the extensive traditional piano trio repertoire and introducing audiences to new music that they have commissioned and premiered. The trio performs music of Bernstein, Shostakovich and Smetana.

With famed violinist Pinchas Zukerman at the helm, the Zukerman Trio, rounded out by cellist Amanda Forsyth and pianist Shai Wosner, has been thrilling audiences for close to a decade. Formed out of the acclaimed Zukerman Chamber Players, the Zukerman Trio formed in 2013 and has gone on to perform at the world’s greatest stages and festivals. A two-time Grammy winner, Zukerman is also the Principal Guest Conductor of London’s Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

ISATA KANNEH-MASON, piano Recipient of the 2021 Leonard Bernstein Award and a 2020 Opus Klassik award for best young artist, pianist Isata Kanneh-Mason is a tour-de-force. As a member of the Kanneh-Mason family, she also won the 2021 Best Classical Artist at the Global Awards. In 2021, she released Summertime, a journey through the varied piano repertoire of 20th-century America featuring Samuel Barber and Samuel Coleridge-Taylor. The Boston-based roots rock veterans, whose energetic, passionate live shows have forced comparisons to juggernauts like the Dave Matthews Band and O.A.R., come to Rockport! Over the pandemic, Ezra and his mates kept busy performing nightly shows for thousands of their fans in a virtual series that was eventually dubbed The Gathering. After over a year of virtual concerts they return in the flesh this fall.

In a delightful fusion of West African traditional music with bluegrass, funk and rock, Malian artist Balla Kouyaté joins up with Grammy Award-winning, boundary-defying cellist Mike Block for an evening of effervescent, joyous world music. Kouyaté, a balafon player and singer coming out of the Djeli tradition of Mali, was awarded a National Heritage Fellowship from the NEA.

Widely regarded as one of the foremost songwriters of her generation, Suzanne Vega is a masterful storyteller who “observes the world with a clinically poetic eye” (The New York Times). Her enduring body of work includes the hits “Luka” and “Tom's Diner.”

Nakoa is an award-winning songwriter, singer and multi-instrumentalist. A modern troubadour, he makes his home on the highways and concert stages of America and appears regularly with folk music icon Tom Rush. The Boston Globe says of Nakoa, “Between his piano chops and heartfelt originals on guitar, he drops jaws.”

Effervescent and engaging, Boston-based fiddler Hanneke Cassel fuses sounds from the Isle of Skye and Cape Breton with Americana grooves and musical innovations, creating a cutting-edge acoustic sound that retains the integrity and spirit of the Scottish tradition. Her newest record, Over the Sea to Skye, was released in 2021.

By Giuseppe Verdi The Met rings in the new year with the gala premiere of a new take on Verdi’s timeless tragedy from Bartlett Sher. The Tony Award–winning director resets the opera’s action in the 1920s, with Art Deco sets by Michael Yeargan and elegant costumes by Catherine Zuber. Baritone Quinn Kelsey performs the title role.

Marking the first time an opera by an African American composer will appear on the Met stage, Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts Grammy Award–winning jazz musician and composer Terence Blanchard’s adaptation of the celebrated memoir by New York Times columnist Charles M. Blow. The opera tells the story of a young man’s journey to overcome a life of trauma and hardship. Baritone Will Liverman stars as Charles, alongside sopranos Angel Blue as Destiny/Loneliness/Greta and Latonia Moore as Billie.

Yannick Nézet-Séguin oversees the momentous Met premiere with soprano Erin Morley in the title role, opposite baritone Joshua Hopkins as Orpheus.
