01 THE FORGOTTEN CITY The final project of Year 3 allows me to set up my brief based on Hull's city. And upon my impressions of the town and the local history's understanding, I refer to Hull as the "Forgotten City".

This project looked at the history - 'The Hull Blitz" event in World War II. Hull was one of the most badly damaged cities in the UK, but the city did not receive much attention from social media because no celebrities were there to represent the city. This has been a "disgrace" to the local residences ever since. And I am intended to help Hull regain its public awareness, acknowledge the future generation of history, and promote the idea of peace. #Research, Architecture, Place Making

Existing Facade and Building There is an existing relic of the National Picture Theatre located on the site; the historical facade is to retain as the new building's main entrance. And to expand the distribution of spaces, two existing are to be reused as part of the building area. Moreover, the entire site area consists of four building blocks that are architecturally connected in negative and Positive Space. And each space function is carefully located as a sequence for users as they make their journey through the buildings. The building aims to architecturally present Positive and Negative space through room and light by taking some part away from a single shape. It metaphorically indicates damages and lost from war permanently turns into memories.

In terms of the space use distribution, the building divided functions into two main groups: The General Public Areas and the Special Memorial Space. The General Public Areas such as the courtyard, exhibition spaces, workshop are located at the centre of the site. Yet, the Special Memorial Spaces are situated in the back of the site to distance from the outside noises.

02 PARS PRO TOTO The second project in Year 3 aims to design a pair of 'lock-keepers' rooms located at two critical historical nodes within Hull - a city gatehouse and an inner harbour entrance.

The spaces will have a poetic requirement relating to the city, developing a line of architectural enquiry and a programmatic function to provide reading and writing rooms for poets.

VOCABULARY COLLAGES - "Sense of Place" - To pick the most common material on the site as an inspiration, associating brick's "decaying process" to "passing of time". Considering cracking within brick as a Natural lighting device and to combine it with modern glass brick to accentuate the contrast between past and present.

- To relate the eroding process of chain to 'passing of time'. Referring to the connection between two chains to the historical context; the Queen's Lock was once a barrier that separate Hull from the outsider.

- To reuse aged material and contrast with fresh material to Create an eye-catching building facade

The Live/Work space for Poet The new building is located above the historical relic of Beverly's Gate. It is intended to create a live/workspace for the poet to find inspiration for writing poems. And to regain citizen's aware of Hull's history.

Materiality - Brick & Glass Brick - Adopt local building material Brick can allow the new building to blends into the existing environment.

-Indicate passing of time by presenting brick faded into glass brick on the building facade.

- Draw the public attention to the relics by having bricks facade faded into glass bricks.

- An interactive public space, where people write meaningful Messages on the walls and the poet use it as writing resources.

The Live/Work space for Poet The Queen's Dock is a historical site because it was the first dock in Hull, where many ships used to transfer goods. And nowadays, it is no longer a living area in Hull.

Therefore, a museum is to be built in this location, recreate activities in this area, and regain publics' attention to local history.

This building is related to the building design at Beverly's Gate because the museum will display poems written by the poet who lives there.

Materiality - Rusted metal & Metal - Indicate passing of time by playing contrast between rusted metal and metal on the building facade.

- Draw the public attention to the relics by having bricks facade faded into glass bricks.

Activities - A one-way circulation to guide the visitor through the museum, from looking through the historical object to poems reading and historical research.

- The circulate also serves as a metaphor that suggests life is a one-way journey.

- Silent reading space at the lowest level, the visitor would study local history there, and meanwhile, enjoy the view of the Queen's Dock.

03 SITUATION This is the first group project of Year 3, and we have to produce a "physical poem" of Hull-based on our exploration and understanding toward a poem called "Here", written by Philip Larkin.

Larkin's poem is a journey into, through and beyond the city, we have to break down the poem into four stanzas, and focus on elements of landscape, city, people and sea.

Stanza 2 A distant rumble of traffic and few feet stepping by, The empty plots of land that are scattered between modern buildings Remnants of cranes between the gables Graffiti between expanses of grey Footsteps overlook the precious pockets of history, Glimpses into what was before Now there is only a sense of lacking A lack of city and a lack of respect of what once was The river continues to flow, an ever-present existence Witnessing centuries of maritime activity Depths which have swallowed history Gulls are crying over the chimneys Dense forms steal space on the street Bay windows, sash windows, arched windows Overall there is a feeling of grandeur and pride Ornate details haven't been slept on This bubble of cultural respect doesn't last The river barren against the edge of the red brick An ever-present existence in decline

LANDSCAPE Sense of anxiety & unease for moving into a strange new environment.

Stanza 3

CITY Exploration throughout the city, Philip Larkins looks on the architectural landscape - verticality and urban density.

Rusted steel forms a barrier between land and sea holding the bank in place Flowers tied to a fence with yellow ribbons Whir goes a drill over builders frustrated squabbles Thick coats, hi-vis vests and suave suits, zimmer-frames, phone calls, shoppers, couples and smokers wonder past the street a wind tunnel pushing them along always parallel to the water never meeting Scattered clouds to the north; slate grey, off white and cold blue The rivers small ripples reflect a dull light Overtly brown-grey broken by a small patch of uncut grass benches huddle against the quay forcing views outwards interrupted by a brutal footbridge used sporadically without a sound All noise comes from behind ahead is serene, silent.

PEOPLE Activities by the River Hull at the time, in which Philip Larkins focuses on the people in working-class. And the city nowadays does not rely on the river anymore, because most of the people started running business in the town centre.

SEA Philip Larkins arrived in the area where the river meets the Humber. As he looks beyond the sea, he feels a sense of loneliness and isolation.

STANZA 1 Texture of Lichen highlighting the Natural Decay

STANZA 3 Circles to highlight the busy docked ship with masts emphasizing the connection to the High Street.

STANZA 4 Strands of river weave together to show the flows, highlight the routes ships would have taken out to sea.

STANZA 1 Begins with a simplistic landscape model to indicate the river as the main focus and the start of everything.

STANZA 2 The congested architectural quality in the model is to represent buildings in Hull.

And to review how Hull was like during the booming period of industry. And in contrast, the river is as if the city abandons it.

COMPLEMENTARY MODELS

STANZA 3 The truth side of Hull reveals in the third model. Underneath the bustling and chaotic reputation, it felt like the history of movement and energy had died and faded away. The model indicates it by reflecting the bustling activity of the past being covered over by a blank modern expanse, and people have to look beneath the concrete to find out Hull's Cultural and dynamic history.

STANZA 4 The models reflect this by showing the river contours quickly opening out, losing the distractive direction the river has through the over models. The concrete forms show no resemblance to our stanza two models to recreate the feeling that they have no relationship.

04 CITY UNIVERSITY OF HONG KONG I joined WCWP International Limited as a member of the City University Project Team. I was assigned to work on CityU Lodge Building design projects that were at the development stage. My job post mainly required me to design, propose material samples and produce realistic renderings for interior and exterior. The area I plan included a restaurant, lounge, reception, public toilets, and main entrance. I developed render by using Sketchup, Lumion and Photoshop. 05 WESTERN RESTAURANT AT FACULTY CLUB OF CITY UNIVERSITY OF HONG KONG I was assigned to assists on Western Restaurant renovation projects that are at the design development stage. I am mainly responsible for the design input, to propose furniture design and produce realistic renderings. And the design area included a reception, restaurant, bar area and public toilets. All the renderings are also created by using Sketchup, Lumion and Photoshop.
