If you’ve called the Parks Department, visited the Rec Center or just live in the area; chances are, you know Gina Borba! As the Parks Admin. Secretary, Gina is your go-to for all things Parks, Trees, and the Giants! Always with a smile, Gina has worked for the Department since 1999 in both Parks and Recreation.

When not at work, Gina can be found cheering on her husband Bill’s band, hanging out with her two grown kids, traveling, “reading” with her book club, and enjoying some vino on the coast with her family and friends.

How to Register/Refund/Credits Four Easy Ways to Register!

All activities require registration before attending.

General Information

Classes may be cancelled due to lack of enrollment. Please make every effort to register early so a class will not be cancelled unnecessarily.

Burlingame residents pay a discounted fee. Burlingame Residents: Those individuals who currently RESIDE IN BURLINGAME. Proof of residency may be required (Driver’s license or PG& E bill with your current Burlingame address). P.O. Boxes ARE NOT acceptable.

Non-Residents: Those individuals who currently RESIDE OUTSIDE OF BURLINGAME (i.e. Hillsborough, San Mateo, Millbrae, unincorporated county areas and surrounding communities).

Scholarships Program Limited scholarships will be available for a variety of programs offered through the Recreation Department. Scholarship applications are available at the Recreation Center.

Scholarship applications for each session are accepted once registration for the session has begun.

Applications are accepted one week prior to the start date of the class(es).

Payment plans may also be offered.

Registration Fee

Please donate! Help Burlingame youth maintain a healthy and positive lifestyle! To make a tax deductible donation to the Scholarship Fund, please call Joleen Helley @ (650) 558-7300.

There is a non-refundable $12 registration fee included in every class fee.

Refunds

Full check refunds less the $19 department fees ($12 registration, $7 processing) will be given to cancellations received 7 calendar days prior to the first class of the session, unless otherwise noted in the program description.

Should you fail to attend a class or if a class has already concluded, you will not be granted a refund. No refunds or credit adjustments will be issued after the class begins. If you are not satisfied with any of our programs, please contact the front office at (650)558-7300 and they will further direct you. Full refunds are given for classes cancelled by the Parks & Recreation Department.

Department Credit Adjustments

To receive a Department Credit for a class fee: • The Recreation Center office must be notified no later than 7 calendar days

prior to the first class that the student wishes a Department Credit.

• Credits are processed Monday – Friday, 8:00am to 5:00pm by calling 558-7300.

• The $12 registration fee and a $7 processing fee will be deducted per activity.

• Department Credits are good for one year and may be applied to any future Department activities. Department Credits take one business day to process and will be mailed to you.

Please note: Unforeseen circumstances may cause an instructor to occasionally cancel a class. Make-up classes will be scheduled at the instructor’s convenience.

Credits will not be issued if you cannot attend the make-up class.

Certain recreation programs have specific refund policies that differ from what is listed above, including but not limited to: Village Park Preschool, Mature Adult Trips and Theater classes.

These special provisions are clarified in their program class description.

Independent Contractors

Many recreation classes are being provided by contract with an independent vendor. While the City of Burlingame has reviewed the vendor’s qualifications, experience, and suitability for providing the class, the City may not have screened the individual employees of the vendor.

Normal business hours at the Recreation Center are: Monday through Thursday, 8:00am to 8:00pm, Fridays from 8:00am to 5:00pm and Saturdays and Sundays from 9:00am to 2pm.

Winter/Spring 2016 Village Park Preschool

Registration Information: All Village Park Preschool classes are currently full. Call the Recreation Center to added to the waiting list. Information for the 2016-2017 school year can be found on page 7.

Lil’ Sprouts (age 2 by 9/1/15, born between 9/2/12 & 9/1/13)

The Lil’ Sprouts program provides the opportunity for your 2 year olds to play and interact with other children their age in a safe, stimulating and relaxed environment. Age appropriate activities will be provided in arts, crafts, music, cooking, story time and outdoor play. We help your child to socialize with others in a polite and respectful way. The goal of this program is to prepare our Lil’ Sprouts for our Cottage Kids program. Children need not be potty trained; however, extra clothing and diapers should be brought to class. Proof of birth date is required at Registration. Class size is limited to 14 children. Come let your sprouts grow with us at the village!

Fall 2016 at Village Park Preschool Fall 2016 Registration Information: Registration for the Village Park Preschool will be based on a lottery system for the 2016-17 school year. The lottery will take place on Wednesday, February 24 at 7:00pm at the Burlingame Rec. Center. The following information includes the lottery procedures:

1. You (or your representative) must be present to participate in the lottery. You may pre-register for the lottery at www.burlingame.org/village.

You must be a Burlingame resident to participate in the lottery and need to bring the following items with you:

• Proof of residency (parent’s driver’s license proving you are the parent of the child, and a current residential phone or PG&E bill with

parent’s name listed)

• Your child’s birth certificate.

You may not participate in the lottery if you do not have the above items. No exceptions will be made. (No mortgage payments or lease

agreements will be allowed as proof of residency.) Grandparents addresses do not qualify as residency, even if the grandparent is the

caretaker of the child.

2. Only those arriving prior to 7:00pm will be included in the lottery. Please arrive by 6:15 pm to show proof of residency and your child’s birth certificate at which time you will receive your random lottery number. The doors will be shut promptly at 7:00pm and the lottery will begin.

Non-residents and those arriving after 7:00pm will be served on a first come-first served basis Thursday, February 25th.

3. When the lottery begins, random numbers will be drawn. Registrations will be taken in the order that the numbers are called. Only one number per family will be given and you may only register one child per number, siblings excepted.

4. All fees are due at the time of registration. A $100 fee will be charged for any registration transfers, refunds, credits, etc. for all preschool registrations. A pro-rated refund will only be issued if a replacement student can be found. If a pro-rated refund is issued, the $100 fee will still be assessed. There will be no exceptions to this policy. Any discrepancies in residency discovered after registration will result in the child/children being removed from the program without a refund.

5. Please note, currently enrolled students and siblings have priority to register, some classes may already be full. Please call 650-558-7300 after February 17 for availability.

Gymnastics, Fitness, Theater & Irish Dance Little Angels Gymnastics (18 Mos-2.5 Yrs)

Irish Dancing (age 4-18) with Patricia Kennelly

Participants will learn to dance in the traditional Irish style, increasing self esteem and confidence through coordination. Strength and flexibility will be the goal along with learning the love of dance and music. New Beginners: Starting Irish dancing for the first time - wear a red sock on the right foot and a white sock on the left foot. All students are requested to have black ballet slippers or Irish reel shoes. Please wear shorts and a neat T-shirt. Optional: Materials fee of $20 payable to instructor in class for an Irish dance CD. Middle School Sports @ BIS The middle school sports program is sponsored and run by the Burlingame Parks & Recreation Department and is part of the North County Recreation League. This program is open to all students enrolled at BIS as well as any Burlingame resident youth in 6th, 7th, or 8th grade not attending BIS. Adult Sports The City of Burlingame Parks and Recreation Department offers a variety of Adult Sports leagues. Our registration procedure is quick and easy! It starts with a mandatory managers’ meeting where you pick up the information packet and discuss any changes for the upcoming year. Next, you will return the manager’s card, roster/waiver and pay your fee. Returning teams must have 55% of last year’s players. Check the time-line below for specific dates.

These lessons focus intensely on all aspects of guitar music-making: technique, musicality, talent, discipline, and passion. To receive a household credit (less the cost of the bus and pre-paid fees) the Recreation Center must be notified at least 7 days before the trip. San Francisco is home to hundreds of houses of worship, and on this day we will visit three of the most interesting. Our morning will commence with a visit to the largest synagogue in California, Temple Emanu-El, where we will have a docent led tour of the 90-year old structure. Following this, we will drive a few blocks to the east to visit the Swedenborgian Church of the New Jerusalem, the only one of this sect in California. This faith derives from a religious leader who believed that a love of nature is expressed through religion.

After lunch, we will visit the Episcopal Church of St. Gregory of Nyssa, located on the lower slopes of Potrero Hill. This church is famous for it’s over 100 mural depictions of famous men and women considered saints from all over the world.

Developed by the American Association of Retired Persons (A.A.R.P.), Driver Safety Program is the first comprehensive driver retraining course geared to the specific needs of older motorists. The course material covers the effects of aging and medications on driving, basic driving rules, license renewal, local traffic hazards, adverse road conditions, energy saving, and accident prevention measures. Research shows that older drivers are involved in no more accidents than their middle-age counterparts when the record is based on actual miles driven. This course introduces the traditional Chinese art of Tai Chi Chuan, following the general guidelines and pedagogy of Chen Style Hunyuan lineage. By performing exercises consisting of deliberate, slow and even movements supported by deep and relaxed breathing, practitioners learn to integrate the mind and body.

We will cover basic Standing Meditation, Qigong, Silk-Reeling, Hunyuan 24 Movements Forms, and collaborative Push-hands appropriate for beginners.

Although the level of physical demand is low, roughly equivalent to a 2-3 mile walk in a park. Participants are expected be fit enough to stay on their feet for the entire 90 min session, taking short breaks if necessary. Participants should come in comfortable attire and flat sole exercise shoes that allows for flexibility, comfort, warmth and movement.

2016 Business Landscape Award The Business Landscape Award is presented annually to an occupied local business that has designed and landscaped their property to maintain and beautify the City of Burlingame. The recipient receives an engraved brass plaque with their name plus an original framed and signed pen and watercolor painting of their business by famed local Burlingame artist, Dale Perkins.

The Award is presented at a City Council meeting.
