Becoming a senior yacht designer

During my bachelor, my focus went towards design drawing and the conceptualisation phase of the design process. By chosing the IPD master programme, I enhanced my engineering skills, from which I feel is an important quality a designer has in order to create convincing design proposals.

As from my first internship at Feadship, I developed a strong interest for yacht design. For my graduation and my first steps in my career I would like to grow more into this world of yacht design and learn all aspects that come along with the designing process.

My aspiration is to become a senior designer of a well-established yacht design company where I can continue creating designs.

As a (product/yacht) designer I feel responsible to consider social, ecological and economical aspects in the design process. My aim is to become a transportation designer who controls both aesthetics and engineering.

FEADSHIP LEEF A self-sustaining superyacht for the conscious billionaire

FEADSHIP SUPERYACHT CONCEPT: LEEF

PDEC TOWER

A self sustaining superyacht with an own eco system that has integrated energy conserving systems, addressing the air conditioning, food supply, waste management and alternative energy sources. ‘Leef’ has unique features: the PDEC tower for less energy wasted on the air conditioning, the seawater greenhouse for fresh food and fresh water, the anaerobic digester for biogas for cooking, and more solutions for minimizing energy use and setting the right example for a restorability mindset. A lot of thought has gone in the ecosystem and that resulted in such self-sustaining solutions where we even use the grey water from the sanitair systems, the food waste or the excess organic waste from the greenhouse.

SEAWATER SUPERYACHT GROWING GARDEN As part of the superyacht concep ‘Leef’, the growing garden is further developed into a modular installation that can be placed anywhere in the yacht.

The superyacht growing garden is an aeroponic system, which means that the roots of the plants are being fed by an efficient fog spraying system.

The roots are totally enclosed, as the upper part of the plants are in the open air.

Research has shown that blue light influences the growth and strength of the stem and red light the production of glucose in fruits. Using a certain amount of seawater has also shown to be enhancing the flavour of fruits. In order to produce the highest quality vegetables and fruits, controlled led lights are placed strategically near the plant.

60M SWATH A sketch proposal for a SWATH superyacht For the Showboats Young Designer of the Year competition in 2014, the assignment was to transform a SWATH pilot vessel of Abeking and Rasmussen into a superyacht.

The clients was a man at age, who had a wife, children, and grandchildren. Since the wife of the owner has motion illness, the stable SWATH type vessel was an option for this older couple.

As the SWATH has a low velocity, the idea was to create a yacht exterior that expresses calmth and pride. Inspired by the peacock, the mass is leaning forwards while the upward lines invoke a majestic posture.

ENABLING PEOPLE IN A WHEELCHAIR ENJOYING THE WATERBIKE EXPERIENCE The wheelchair waterbike is designed to be functional and safe. Stability calculations and testings are executed to determine the angular displacement. Furthermore, the seats are placed in a way so that everyone’s eye level is one the same height to make it easy to interact.

A 68m Autonomous semi SWATH Super Yacht for the Future Chinese Elite

THE FUTURE CHINESE OWNER PROFILE Chinese millennials are the next generation billionaires and are seen as the new target group. They are more globalised, individual and savvy than their parents. Although they are influenced by western values, these millennials want to preserve their culture and tradition, but then in a modern and convenient way.

The future Chinese elite is represented by a persona named Jasmin. Jasmin is a female self-made billionaire who thinks yachting can be more than just luxury. As a strong believer of ‘responsible yachting’, the aim of her yacht is to enjoy life, initiate research projects and to help disaster areas when needed.

Based on the persona of the Chinese female billionaire, there were three directions chosen to sketch a concept for: health, educate, and social.

EDUCATE With a collective oriented goal, ‘Educate’ is a concept where awareness will be created by teaching students about the polluting problems in local waters and stimulate them to do something about it.

SOCIAL ‘Social’ is a social platform that enables the owner to organize events to bridge the gap between different social groups.

HEALTH This concept anticipates on the rising concerns about food and health. An encapsulated wellness area where the owner can maintain her good health and prevent illnesses while enjoying luxury.

FINAL CONCEPT SKETCH DESIGN: RÉN The idea of Rén is that the Chinese ‘Wonder woman’ can enjoy spending time with her family, organise social events and can initiate research projects with this yacht. The box lay out is divided into the torpedo top deck, lower deck, social deck, owners deck and health deck. The unique featured are the open kitchen on the social deck, an extra social aft lounge, a front VR knowledge square and the growing garden on the health deck.

MID SHIP TENDER LAUNCH DEVELOPMENT During the development of the general lay out there were many features that had to be worked out. One of them was the mid ship tender launch.

The tender launch descends vertically from the bottom of the mid ship. The height between the mid ship and the water line is over 2500mm which makes it possible for small watercrafts to approach the tender launch from both the aft and the front.

Also, the mid ship tender launch is protected by the four struts around it, which makes it easy to operate. Further it’s worth mentioning that the shape from the launch is created in a way that, with the support of rubber pipes, the bottom of the mid ship will be fully water tight.
