Architecture in music videos Architecture in music. Music in architecture. And the relation of both. It is questionable which came first. Music or the very first dwelling? Some might argue that it was primarily necessary to satisfy the very fundamental needs of survival. On the other hand, sound was a way of communication. Again, in order to survive in groups. But leaving this debate aside, I would like to focus on the relationship of these two. Music and architecture are both abstract elements in the environment, that were not present before the humans.
Music and space Music takes place in a well defined space. It is defined not only by its surroundings, but it also defines abstract space on its own from within, thanks to sound. Musician creates an intangible sphere around himself and therefore is creating boundary. Boundary that separates zones where you hear the sound, and where you do not. And with boundaries comes place. Even the instruments itself do indeed have their own enclosed space within them, as it could be shown on guitars. Without this void inside, they would appear and function in a very different way. The inside of the instrument shares the concept of space definition I am explaining. As it is obvious, architecture and environment leads to inspiration. So space influences the very roots of music. But since broadcasting began, music started using something else than tones. It became also a visual experience. Visual experience that started as gigs is now a major thing in interest. It became a multimedia. And with this multimedia comes a new way of using space. It is now using a wide range of spatial characteristic. Not only physical, but more commonly in the recent years, the virtual.
Videos Here I have chosen few examples that would help me to explain this relation further. Please do view them along as you read. St, Vincent, Digital Witness This video is very rich on connotation and its whole concept is based on a nonexistent world occurring in TV. It uses abstract architecture to emphasize the impact of this virtual environment. Using office blind as a decoration and piece that signifies that windows are useless as long as we have tv. From outside we see an empty world with marching figures. Windowless structures create a tension that something important and familiar is missing here. Metronomy, Month of Sundays
