Shalom Camp Families, Let me start by introducing myself. My name is Shahar Edry. I am married to Kara and father to Lev (I’m counting down the days until I can send him to Shemesh summer camp!). I was born and raised in Israel, and have a strong experience with formal and non-formal education. My journey began with the JCC and Federation three years ago as the Israel Center director, and now I am excited to be your camp director!

As the new camp director, please accept my invitation to our Shemesh Summer Day Camp experience.

This year, we will provide a great combination of fun, sports, enrichment classes, themed activities, amazing weekly field trips, monthly sleepover night, Israeli Scouts and so much more! Our goal is to provide every camper with a fun, safe, and friendly environment for our Shemesh families.

Shemesh is located at the beautiful Valley of the Sun JCC, our community’s home in the valley. This allows for us to provide a beautiful swimming pool, fitness area and recreational facilities that the JCC has to offer, plus the extra value of supporting and being part of our special JCC community. Your kids will make new friends and build relationships that will last a lifetime while creating memories and values that will become part of every family forever.

We love watching our campers grow and develop at Shemesh, and we can see the beneficial impact of camp on our campers every day. I can proudly say that all of my youth department leaders grew up at the JCC and “graduated” from Shemesh.

Now, let me introduce you to our camp manager, Hillary Goodman.

I started Shemesh when I was in Kindergarten, and have not left since. Shemesh not only allowed me to grow up surrounded by love and family, it encouraged me and taught me skills for which I will be forever grateful. Through being a Shemesh camper, CIT, counselor, supervisor, and now camp manager, I found my love for child development and the ability to facilitate growth for every camper. I have a strong background in special education and I am so excited for this fun-packed summer, and can’t wait to show you what we have!

This summer, we offer many camps tailored to every camper’s unique need. Our traditional camp allows them to get a taste of everything camp has to offer. Throughout the weeks, every camper will experience instructional and free swim, arts and crafts, sports, spirit, dance, music and so much more! In addition to traditional camps, we offer specialty camps for those who want to focus on building a specific skill set or to try something new! Our specialty camps include: Sports (Basketball, futball, soccer, baseball), IT Kids (Lego, robotics, mad science) Shemesh got talent (Preforming art, coocking, art, dance & cheer), Camp Ivrit (In Hebrew) We are also offering Ometz again for our campers with special needs.

As a camp, we follow the highest standards when it comes to ensuring the safety, well-being and security of every camper. Our low staff-to-camper ratios ensure that each child receives individualized attention. We take great pride in being one of the few summer day camp programs in this area that is licensed by the Department of Health and Human Services.

We have a camp for every camper—whether they want to do traditional camp activities, play recreational sports all day or spend a week focusing on a specific skill! If your child prefers the arts, sciences, cooking, Lego or dance and cheer—we have a camp for them too! We are also pleased to offer four weeks of Ometz for our campers with special needs and to announce our Hebrew-intensive Camp Ivrit with exciting Israeli and Jewish culture experiences! TRADITIONAL CAMPS Chaverim:

A Mock Schedule of what a day in the life of a Chaverim Camper looks like:

9:00-9:35 aM: Drop-Off – Campers are dropped off at their “home base” to mingle with their counselors and friends while they enjoy morning opening activities, including live music with our amazing musician Erez Kessler followed favorite camp dances to pump up their day with their counselors!

9:45-10:30aM: Morning Workout – From yoga to Zumba, morning exercise gives our campers a healthy start to their fabulous, fun day!

10:30-11:15aM: Arts and Crafts – Campers explore their

creative sides with crafts and art projects such as lanyards and picture frames.

Grades K-4

Your child will make new friends, try new things and create memories that will last a lifetime! Campers are divided into age-appropriate groups with staff specifically trained for each group to ensure that your child has individualized attention in a safe and enriching environment. Our Chaverim campers enjoy sports, music, games, drama, arts and crafts, as well as free swim and instructional swim twice a week. Chaverim also includes weekly spirit competitions and field trips that tie into each week’s theme so our campers can experience the world around them in an exciting, hands-on way.

Ruach:

Grades 5-8

Ruach builds strong pre-teen minds and values through a wide range of activities both at the JCC and around the Valley! Ruach provides a unique camp experience with traditional camp favorites such as sports, swimming, arts and crafts, drama, music and weekly field trips, but also includes weekly in-house community service projects!

Campers give back to our community while creating lifelong lessons and memories. By summer’s end, our Ruach campers will be stronger, more thoughtful and more independent tweens.

11:15-NoOn: Swim – Campers cool off and swim with

friends while our certified lifeguards and counselors ensure that everyone is safe. Campers K-2 participate in instructional swim to keep them safe around water and to ensure they have a splashing good time!

12:45-1:30pM: Israeli Culture – Campers learn all about Israel, from food and music to games.

1:30pM-2:15pM: Gym Time – Campers have some indoor fun with games such as sprout ball, kickball, bee tag and more!

2:15pM-3pM: Dance – The fun continues with all types of dance and dance games such as freeze dance and musical chairs.

3:30pM-3:40pM: Spirit – Campers work on cheers, dances and chants in order to win the coveted Sababa stick!

ivrit hebrew camp New this year! Ivrit campers experience all the fun of traditional camp with a special Israeli twist. Campers explore what it means to be Jewish and learn about Jewish culture, heritage, traditions and the Hebrew language. Complete with a visit from the Israeli Scouts, Ivrit is the perfect way to embrace our camp’s Jewish identity, build your child’s cultural identity and to learn something new!

ometz For Campers with Special Needs Ometz serves campers from 5 to 13 years of age with mild to moderate disabilities. Our focus is recognizing each camper’s potential in all skill areas. Activities enhance social, motor, language and other vital life skills to promote greater independence. We help Ometz campers to make new friends while having fun in a safe, welcoming and nurturing environment. Campers are grouped by age, skill level and camper readiness, as well as gender for older age groups.

All groups participate in appropriate field trips. Fun-filled days include adaptive physical education, movement, music, adaptive art, swim lessons, socialization and free swim.

We are excited to offer Ometz for four weeks so all campers are able to participate in Shemesh Summer fun!

Specialty SPORTS CAMPS Basketball, soccer, baseball, football and more! A sports lover’s dream, our specialty sports camps gives campers a full-day of sports. Campers are grouped by age to ensure safety and fun. Our intensive skills clinics combine high-energy fun with professionally led instruction and skill development by some of the Valley’s premier sports organizations. Each week focuses on a specific sport, first teaching the fundamentals and progressing to advanced techniques.

June 20-24 & July 5-8: Soccer

Led by Olympic Silver Medalist Alex Sachs, campers participate in organized drills, exercises and play while learning the rules of indoor soccer. Focus is on conditioning, sportsmanship, teamwork and healthy habits through our intense, comprehensive and competitive program.

June 6-10 & July 11-15: Basketball

Experienced coaches and challenging drills help campers become the best basketball players they can be. Professional skills trainers improve each player’s skill set in every position.

Our intensive basketball clinic is perfect for your aspiring NBA star!

June 13-17: Baseball

Baseball is America’s favorite pastime and during this intensive baseball clinic, our campers will learn proper baseball techniques, strategies and more from specialized, highly trained coaches.

June 21- July 1: Football

A fun week of non-touch, non-competitive football teaches our campers how to play the game, proper ball-handling skills and other techniques needed for success! Campers have fun practicing their football skills in a safe environment.

May 31- June 3, July 25-28 & August 1-5: General Sports

Campers spend the morning learning a sport from our professional staff and complete the day building their skills in a wide variety of sports. Focus is non-competitive and teambuilding. Sports include basketball, soccer, baseball, football, kickball, pillow polo, sprout ball, dolly soccer, gaga ball, tennis and more! Campers also have free swim every day, and our K-2 campers participate in instructional swim. All campers enjoy our fun outdoor waterslide.

Shemesh Got talent Our Shemesh Got Talent camps allow campers to develop their skills in a specific arts area! We have a selection of camps to choose from, whatever your child’s interest. Whether campers want to be a master chef in the kitchen, a gymnast in the Olympics or just want to learn a new skill – we have the perfect camp! All Shemesh Got Talent camps include a weekly field trip, instructional and free swim and snacks.

June 20-24, July 5-8, & July 2529: Performing Arts Camp This year we are excited to have Michele Kahn as our performing arts camp specialist! She recently played Sally Bowles in Cabaret at The Tempe Center for the Arts.

Campers learn as they participate in a variety of stage and musical performances. They gain important insight into the performing arts and their own identity as an artist. Led by Michelle Kahn, our campers put on a weekly performance to showcase everything they have learned. This camp helps campers to gain confidence, skill and have fun while building teamwork, cooperation and a stage presence.

June 13-17: Cooking

Young chefs learn the skills essential to make delicious meals! Throughout the multi-week camp, our professional chef teaches your child kitchen safety, age-appropriate knife and heat skills and a multitude of techniques for a lifetime of culinary creation. This camp includes weekly culinaryinspired field trips. Parents celebrate “graduation” with a gourmet meal prepared entirely by their little chefs!

July 11-15: Art

Campers explore a variety of art materials and learn new and different ways to use them. Whether an experienced artist or a beginner, campers develop their skills across a variety of media. Campers explore color theory, negative and positive space, representational methods, preservations and stylization while experimenting with paint, print making, drawing, sculpture, scrap booking and mixed media.

June 6-10 & June 27- July 1: Dance and Cheer Camp

Campers learn the basics of chorography, performing in front of their peers, teamwork, stage presence and much more! Your child will learn the fundamentals of modern dance, ballet, hip hop, cheer and will have the opportunity to perform on stage in front of an audience. All skill levels are welcome, from the best ballerinas to dancers who are just learning. By the end of camp, every camper will be twirling, cheering and spinning.

Counselor-In-Training Leadership Program: Grades 9-10 Our CIT leadership program develops the leadership skills needed to be a successful camp counselor and a productive member of our community while providing a memorable and exciting camp experience full of friendships and fun. A hybrid of a traditional camp and a leadership training program, CITs spend the morning assisting Shemesh counselors and staff in leading younger campers through activities and exercises. In the afternoons, CITs are guided through workshops and activities designed to teach responsibility, time management, leadership, public speaking, confidence and childcare skills. Activities are conducted by our trained CIT supervisor and guest leaders and speakers. Our CIT camp is an amazing opportunity for teens looking to broaden their skills and to gain work experience in a fun, safe environment.

IT kids IT Kids are camps perfect for children who have a natural curiosity in how the world works. Campers are divided into groups by age and guided through fun, age-appropriate, interactive experiences. They explore natural science, technology and engineering using experiments, computers and LEGOS速 led by trained experts in their fields.

June 6-10 & June 27-July 1: Computer Programming

Campers participate in fun, interactive projects geared for their age group: ages 7-9 and 10-14.

Each will learn about mechanical and software design, problem solving and teamwork as they design and build robots and then put their inventions to the test!

June 13-17, July 5-8, & July 25-29: LEGO速 Budding engineers participate in fun, interactive projects geared for their age group: ages 5-7 and 8-12.

June 13-17: Campers explore physics, engineering and

architecture by building structures that apply real-word concepts, including motorized cars, bridges and skyscrapers!

July 5-8: Awaken the force within your Jedi Master. Campers discover the workings of pneumatics, gear trains and eccentric motion as they build motorized X-Wings, Star Destroyers and other structures from a galaxy far, far away.

July 25-29: Campers bring Minecraft to life as they roll the

dice to mine resources and use them to build settlements, castles and more! Through adventurous fun, they discover their own resourcefulness, creativity and cooperation. Prior Minecraft experience not required.

June 20-24 & July 11-15: Weird Science

Campers learn about science through interactive and hands-on activities. Experienced science professionals guide campers through cool and interesting experiments in a safe and controlled environment. From exploding volcanos to steampowered machines, campers have fun while learning the scientific method, lab safety and science history.

June 20-24: Science Explorations Campers explore the natural world and the animal kingdom through fun, age-appropriate activities and experience. They even go on a nature treasure hunt and work as a team to development innovative solutions to pollution!

July 11-15: Moving with Science A team of engineers help our campers build bridges, domes and other structures to discover how things work in the mechanical world. They also explore natural systems. Fun, age-appropriate activities spark their curiosity and love of science.

Campers and staff are divided into five color teams and compete for points in a variety of activities focused on teamwork, creativity and spirit. Campers and staff show their spirit by dressing in their team color for the entire week. Everyone looks forward to traditional Color War activities, such as a watermelon eating contest, penny wars, balloon shaving and bubblegum blowing. The week culminates with the Color War Finale where the teams present their banners and skits, and face off in a spirited song contest featuring a cheer and march. The winning team receives the coveted Spirit Stick and 1st place ribbons!

Kids Club is a fun and supervised alternative for childcare while our JCC parents enjoy activities within our facilities. We cater to children from age six months to 12 years.

Our caring, friendly staff facilitate funfilled activities, including age-appropriate movies, tv shows, arts and crafts, games and more! While we are not licensed to change diapers, we are able to take potty-trained children to the bathroom. There is a 2-hour limit per session and parents must stay in The J while their children attend Kids Club.

Club J is an enriching, licensed afterschool program for children K-6! Low ratios, quality enrichment classes, homework help, sports and swimming are offered in a safe, fun environment.

Spring enrichment options include karate, gymnastics and acrobatics at Circus School of Arizona, Pinterest-inspired DIY 4 Kids, sports, cooking, science and Zumba. Class days vary so every child can experience all that Club J has to offer.
