We manufacture a complete range of roof sheets which includes Craft-Lock® and Rheefalz concealed fix roofing, C-Tile, IBR, corrugated and wide-span. We offer supporting products and services such as all types of flashings, various roofing accessories and the bull-nosing, cranking and curving of roof sheets. Full technical support such as assisting with the design of a roof, calculating quantities and taking measurements from building and construction plans is also available.

Clotan Steel operates state-of-the-art slitting and roll-forming equipment to manufacture slit-strip and cold-formed lipped channel and lipped angle to customers’ exact requirements. We also specialise in the supply of high quality steel roofs to mass housing projects. These “roof kits” are available with the full support of technical services which include estimation, design and the initial training of emerging contractors, where applicable.

As steel merchants, we also stock all popular steel sections for construction purposes.

Slitting Slitting and packaging options Slitting is the process whereby a wide coil is slit into smaller strips. Clotan Steel has modern and versatile driven slitters with tension devices to minimise the stresses in the magnetic and mechanical properties of the steel. We use high quality shimless tooling for accurate and rapid set-ups.

We also provide various packaging options to meet your requirements and the slit strip coils can be either packaged “eye to sky” or “nested horizontally” on wooden pallets.

Sections All cold formed sections are manufactured according to customer specifications, from prime quality hot rolled steel that complies with the requirements of SANS 10162:

SANS 10162: (Part one) regulates: Cold-formed sections made of commercial quality steel, which does not have a guaranteed minimum yield stress. As indicated to part one of SANS 10162, the minimum yield stress of 200 mPa and tensile strength of 365 mPa can be used for commercial quality steel. Cold-formed sections with a specified yield strength can be supplied on request according to SANS 1062.

IBR Roof sheeting Clotan Steel are trusted IBR roof sheeting suppliers in South Africa, supplying construction companies and individuals on the African continent with quality steel building products.

IBR roof sheeting is a square fluted profile with an effective covering width of 686mm, designed for use as side cladding or roofing material in commercial, industrial and residential buildings. The name IBR is abbreviated from “Inverted Box Rib” and has become a household name in the African building industry. The deep, broad flute design offers excellent drainage characteristics combined with optimum weight versus load/span capabilities. Clotan Steel’s IBR sheeting can be factory cranked, curved and bullnosed to various radii depending on customer’s requirements.

Structural guidelines of IBR roof sheeting IBR roof sheets are available in a wide range of materials displaying various structural properties.

It should be noted that the load span characteristics are only to be used as a broad guideline as purlin spacings are dependant on other factors such as: • Prevailing winds in a certain area • Snow during winter periods • The presence of dust and other particles in industrial areas and the type of structure that is being erected We therefore recommend that a qualified engineer be consulted to determine the purlin spacing for a specific application.

Available dimensions IBR sheeting is available in standard lengths of 1.5 m to 14 m. The permissible length tolerance for the standard-length range will be -0 +5 mm. Sheets outside of these parameters are available on request and may be subject to special pricing arrangements. The maximum height which can be transported is 4,3 m.

This factor should be considered when bullnoses and cranked sheets are designed.

Roof pitch When using IBR, the recommended minimum pitch is 7.5° for roof slopes in excess of 30 m and 5° for slopes less than 30 m. When IBR roof sheets are end-lapped the roof pitch should be considered.

The minimum end laps for roof pitches in excess of 15° is 150 mm and for other roofs a minimum of 250 mm is recommended. End laps for side sheeting should be at least 100 mm. It is recommended that end and side laps on low pitch roofs be sealed to ensure water tightness.

Installation Procedure The required number of IBR sheets can be calculated as follow: Number of sheets = Length of building ÷ 0.686 m (Cover width of sheet)

Roof sheets must be laid with the narrow flute of one corrugation side lap uppermost and should be fixed through the crests of alternate flutes to purlins using 65 mm Top Speed or Tex screws into steel purlins and 90 mm Tex or Top speed screws in the case of timber roofs. All fasteners should incorporate 26 mm dia bonded washers. For vertical wall cladding (side cladding) it is recommended that the broad flute be fixed externally with the main and side lap fasteners in the web of the flutes.

Side cladding can be fixed using 25 mm Tex or Top Speed screws. All fasteners should incorporate 26 mm dia bonded washers.

In order to qualify for a guarantee on Zincalume® and Colorbond® sheets the following fasteners supplied by Buildex Industries should be used: Metaltex Climaseal 3 for steel purlins and Timbertex Zacs 4 for timber purlins. The use of these fasteners will dramatically increase the lifespan of the roof sheeting as corrosion caused by fasteners is avoided.

Widespan Roof sheeting Widespan is a roofing and cladding profile designed to provide an economic alternative to deeper box rib profiles without losing the aesthetic appeal of a square fluted profile. The trapezoidal widespan profile offers greater spans and lower roof slopes than Corrugated sheeting, but provides the same covering width.

Widespan can be factory cranked, curved and bullnosed to various radii depending on customer requirements.

Structural guidelines of widespan roof sheeting Widespan roof sheets are available in a wide range of materials displaying various structural properties. It should be noted that the load span characteristics are only to be used as a broad guideline. Available dimensions Widespan sheeting is available in standard lengths of 1.5 m to 15 m. The permissible length tolerance for the standard-length range will be - 0 + 5 mm. Sheets outside these parameters are available on request and may be subject to special pricing arrangements. The maximum height which can be transported is 4.3 m. This factor should be considered when bullnoses and cranked sheets are designed.

Roof pitch When using Widespan, the recommended minimum pitch is 10° for roof slopes in excess of 30 m and 7.5° for slopes less than 30 m. When Widespan roof sheets are end-lapped, the roof pitch should be considered. The minimum end laps for roofs pitches in excess of 15° is 150 mm and for other roofs a minimum of 250 mm is recommended. End laps for sheeting should be at least 100 mm.

It is recommended that end and side laps on low pitched roofs be sealed to ensure water tightness.

Installation procedure The required number of widespan sheets can be calculated as follow: Number of sheets= Length of building ÷ 0.762 mm (Cover width of sheet)

Roof sheets must be laid with the narrow flute of one corrugation side lap uppermost and should be fixed through the crests of alternate flutes to purlins using 57 mm Top Speed or Tex screws into steel purlins and 90 mm Tex or Top speed screws in the case of timber roofs. All fasteners should incorporate 19 mm dia bonded washers.

For vertical wall cladding (side cladding) it is recommended that the broad fluted be fixed externally with the main and side lap fasteners in the web of the flutes. Side cladding can be fixed using 25 mm Tex or Top speed screws. All fasteners should incorporate 19 mm dia bonded washers.

In order to qualify for a guarantee on Zincalume®, Colorbond®, ColorPlus® and ZincAL® sheets the following fasteners supplied by Buildex Industries should be used: Metaltex Climaseal 3 for steel purlins and Timbertex Zacs 4 for timber purlins. The use of these fasteners will dramatically increase the lifespan of the roof sheeting as corrosion caused by fasteners is avoided.

Corrugated Roof sheeting Corrugated sheeting is the traditional and familiar S-Rib profile for roofing and cladding applications.

It is the oldest and most commonly used roofing profile because of its easy handling and fixing properties and related strength. The S-rib is derived from sinus curve and offers very strong and structural properties.

Corrugated cover width Clotan Steel offers two types of corrugated product options: an 8.5 Corrugated and a 10.5 Corrugated. The rib height will be 17.5 mm.

The Corrugated roof sheeting profile virtually eliminates oil canning and the sheeting can be factory cranked, curved and bullnosed to various radii depending on customer requirements.

Structural guidelines of corrugated sheeting Corrugated roof sheets are available in a wide range of materials displaying various structural properties. It should be noted that the load span characteristics are only to be used as a broad guideline. Purlin spacing is also dependant on other factors such as: • Prevailing winds in a particular area • Snow during winter periods • The presence of dust and other particles in industrial areas as well as the type of structure that is being erected.

We therefore recommend that a qualified engineer be consulted to determine the purlin spacing for a specific application.

Roof sheets and vertical wall cladding (side cladding) must be laid with one and a half corrugation side lap and must be fixed through the crests of alternate flutes to purlins using 50 mm Top Speed or Tex screws into steel purlins and 65 mm Tex or Top Speed screws in the case of timber supports.

All fasteners must incorporate 19 mm dia bonded washers. In order to qualify for a guarantee on Zincalume®, Colorbond®, ColorPlus® and ZincAL® sheets the following fasteners supplied by Buildex Industries should be used: Metaltex Climaseal 3 for steel purlins and Timbertex Zacs 4 for timber purlins. The use of these fasteners will dramatically increase the life span of the roof sheeting as corrosion caused by fasteners is avoided. Craft-Lock® Sheeting The Craft-Lock® roof sheeting system is the result of years of research and wide experience in the roofing industry. The development of the Craft-Lock® concealed fix system was aimed at eliminating disadvantages inherent in many of the existing types of roof profiles. The result is a unique long span profiled sheet that can be erected by unskilled labour with the minimum of tools, to ensure a leak proof roof due to its hidden fasteners (concealed fix). This eliminates potential leakage problems and enhances the aesthetics.

Why choose Craft-Lock®?

Unrestricted thermal movement The unique fixing method allows for expansion and contraction of the sheeting without subjecting the fasteners to fatigue or loosening.

Double capillary action break The double capillary break design of the interlocking mechanism of adjoining sheets ensures the prevention of ingress of rainwater by capillary action.

Ease of erection As set out in the “Erection Procedures”, Craft-Lock® sheeting can be erected easily by using unskilled labour, requiring the minimum tools. The narrow width of sheets simplifies handling and erection procedures.

Long lengths As is the case with other roll profiled sheets, the maximum length of sheets is limited by transport criteria. When profiled on site, virtually any lengths can be produced.

Re-usable Another unique advantage of Craft-Lock® sheets is that they can be re-used. If a building is to be demolished, the hold-down clips can be removed to recover the roof sheets. Re-use is possible as there are no holes in the sheets.

Corrosion performance As the side lap contact area of the profile is minimal and well ventilated, trapped moisture cannot remain and the danger of overlap corrosion is eliminated.

Photo-voltaic connection With Craft-Lock® The perfect symbiosis….Made possible with the new Craft-Lock® clamp Because of its constructional design, the Craft-Lock® roof profile offers an optimal basis for the installation of Photo-voltaic systems. The modules can be attached to the profile panels by means of specially developed Craft-Lock® clamps.

As a result, no holes are drilled into the material and thus no drilling chips are left behind on the roof shell which would accelerate corrosion and cause leaks, a significant advantage over most normal roof profiles. An extremely rational installation is thus made possible. Adding to this concept, it is furthermore possible to attach a rail system to the Craft-Lock® clamps.

Cranking Craft-Lock® can be cranked to continuous curves (minimum 450 mm radius). Ridge cranking facilities are available to crank Craft-Lock® sheets. Radii in excess of 28 m can be rolled to the required curve on site without cranking. Take note that in the event of a bullnose roof detail, the female side of the roof sheet has to be closed with a bullnose lip closing tool.

The tenderer must adhere, and or agree to: • All required flashings and trimmings to be designed in consultation with the supplier and manufactured from the same specified material to prevent any discrepancies during the issue of the Workmanship Guarantee to be issued by the supplier.

• Product and Workmanship Warrantee’s will only apply to accredited installers of Craft-Lock® concealed fix roof sheeting.

• Installation to be in accordance with the manufacturers approved and prescribed installation methods. The manufacturer to conduct inspections at regular intervals and submit advisory reports to the architect and structural engineer.

• A material certificate confirming material grade, thickness before painting, paint system and galvanized coating must be presented upon request.

• Roof sheets will be fixed to every purlin (Maximum 1800 mm purlin spacing on continuous spans and 1500 mm on end spans) by means of a concealed fastening bracket directly over up to 135 mm thick “Blanket type” insulation, installed “over the purlin” according to supplier specifications.

• Brackets will be manufactured from Galvanised and Aluzinc/Zincalume® steel and will be fixed to steel purlins with one 25-50 mm long full thread self–drilling screw or with two, T 15 serrated nails to timber purlins.

Installation instructions Due to the sound design of the Craft-LockÂŽ profile, high quality roofing can be erected by unskilled labour. To ensure satisfactory results, the following basic guidelines should be followed:

Step one To start, place the steel Z-shaped starter bar at one end of the roof (starting), perpendicular to the purlins, as shown in Fig.1.

If necessary, starter bars may overlap, provided that a lap length of 200 mm is allowed. Two fasteners should be used for fixing to each purlin; coated or s.s screws (50 mm min.) or galvanized nails (75 mm min) should be used for timber purlins, or one coated or s.s self-tapping screw (5 mm diameter x 12 mm long) for steel purlins. No rivets should be allowed.

Step two Ensure that profile is concave to achieve pre-stressing on the centre rib. Hook the first roof sheet over the starter bar (as shown in Fig. 1) by holding at an angle of 45° and applying stress in the direction of the arrow, while lowering the sheet to ensure a snug fit.

Fix the first sheet in position by hooking the stainless steel fastening bracket over the male lip and fix it to the purlin with two fasteners (as described above for starter bar).

(Fig. 2) Subsequent sheets are fixed in the same way, using the fixed sheets as platform.

(Fig. 3) Apply even horizontal stress on each sheet before fixing brackets, to ensure proper nesting of the overlap joint.

Note: Hurricane screw. It is recommended that a stainless steel self-tapping screw be used on the overlap of each sheet, at the lower end (eaves) of the sheet. Through to be bent up 30 mm on the top end of the roof sheet (head wall) or ridge to form a stop end. At the bottom end of the sheet to be bent down by 20 mm to form a drip (eave).

Concealed cleats Reehfalz uses specially designed cleats that attach the profile to the substructure of the roof. Reehfalz concealed fixed system secures the sheet to the roof without penetration or damage to the sheet itself. Bullnosing, cranking and curving For roofing Clotan Steel’s IBR, Corrugated and Widespan sheets can be bullnosed, cranked, curved or smooth curved to customer requirements.

Bullnoses and centre cranks Bullnosing and centre-cranking of a profiled sheet incorporates lateral rib indentations pressed in at a uniform distance of 25 mm. Standard bullnoses are made with narrow flute uppermost and the bend away from the angular inclination. Reverse bullnoses are made with the bend into the narrow flute.

Bullnoses and cranks can be at the end of a sheet or at any position along the length. Bullnoses and centre cranks can be manufactured in radii ranging from 350 mm to 800 mm for bullnoses which are bent through 0 – 135°. High tensile material can only be bullnosed and cranked to a minimum radius of 450 mm.

Larger radii will be classified as a forward crank.

The maximum sheet length which can be bullnosed is 15 m, with a maximum height of 2 m.

The minimum run-out from the bullnose is 30 mm on one side with a minimum of 500 mm on the other side of the sheet. It is important to clearly identify the critical end of the bullnose in order to ensure that consistent lengths are supplied to the customer.

The maximum height (after cranking) of centre and off-centre cranks which can be manufactured is 2 m, with a limitation of 10 m total sheet length, due to handling and transport limitations. (Height in this case is from ground level to highest point of bullnose sheet.)

Crank curving IBR, Widespan and Corrugated material can be crank curved with the same process used for bullnosing, but with manual handling and with an increased distance between indentations in order to achieve the larger radius. In the case of pre-painting sheeting the colour can be specified on either side of the sheet. Due to the manual process involved, bullnoses will be priced as curves when the radius exceeds 800 mm. The maximum height of curves which can be handled is 2 m, with a maximum sheet length of 10 m. (Height in this case is from ground level to highest point of bullnosed sheet.)

Smooth curving In addition to other processes described above, corrugated sheets can be curved using a rolling process to achieve a smooth rolling finish on the sheet. High tensile material (550 MPA) is not suitable for curving due to the hardness of the material. It is therefore essential that only 0.58 mm and 0.80 mm material be used for smooth curving. The minimum radius for curving on 0.58 mm ISQ300 material is 900 mm and on 0.80 mm ISQ230 material it is 600 mm. When tight bend radii are specified, edge ripple on the roof sheets might prevail. When only a part of the sheet is curved and bullnosed, slight crease marks on the sheets can be expected.

PV/Solar systems in connection with Craft-Lock® The perfect symbiosis….Made possible with the new Craft-Lock® clamp Precisely because of its constructional design, the Craft-Lock® roof profile offers an optimal basis for the installation of PV systems. The modules can be attached to the profile panels by means of specially-developed Craft-Lock® clamps. As a result, no holes are drilled in the material and thus no drilling chips are left behind on the roof shell which would accelerate corrosion and cause leaks – a significant advantage over most normal roof profiles. An extremely rational installation is thus made possible. Adding to this concept, it is furthermore possible to attach a rail system to the Craft-Lock® clamps.

The Craft-Lock® clamp provides a cost-effective solution for mounting solar structures and general hardware onto Craft-Lock® roof sheeting. For solar installations, the Craft-Lock® clamp is designed to suit both purlin and purlinless installations. The Craft-Lock® clamp, clamps to the roof sheet using an M10 caphead which locks it to the other side of the roof sheet.

The Craft-Lock® clamp can be ordered for three different mounting configurations: 1. M6 for purlinless installations.

2. M8 for trunking and equipment installations.

3. Dual M8 for the PIA top hat purlin installations.

When planning metal roofs, not only the load from wind and snow, but also the use to which it being put at the time must be taken into consideration. Instead, reserves that are able to absorb greater loads stemming from a later or an expanded use of the roof, such as photo voltaic, for example, should be planned for.
