Advice Column Your questions and concerns about living in Kansai answered by our experts What should I look out for when buying Over-TheCounter (OTC) medicines in Japan?

OTCs are useful for many everyday health issues.

Painkillers, allergy medicine, cough medicine, antibiotic/ antiviral ointment, or anti-inflammatory ointment; there are variety of medicines that can be useful. It is true that many OTCs in Japan are designed to be relatively lowdosage, but they are often sufficient enough to relieve minor symptoms. This does not mean that you can use more than instructed by the manufacturer.

Until 2008 all OTCs were required to be sold under presence of pharmacists in Japan but the regulation changed since then and registered retailers can sell most OTCs now. If you have underlying medical conditions or allergy to certain substances, you should seek advice from a doctor before using OTCs. Also, if you have more than mild symptoms, you should see a physician for proper diagnosis.

Here are some things to look out for when using OTCs: • Follow the instructions on the label.

• Taking more than two OTCs with same or similar ingredients may lead to overdose.

• Children under 6 years of age are generally recommended to seek physician’s advice before using OTCs. The FDA in the U.S. especially warns against the use of OTC cough medicines without physician’s advice in children under 4 years of age.

• Doses available from Japanese OTC medicines tend to be low but they are quite sufficient to relieve minor symptoms. If the symptoms are not alleviated by using them you should seek medical doctor’s care.

Winter

Enjoy traditional Japanese new-year cuisine. Osechi ryori is a unique traditional dish where every food has a special meaning (check out p18 for a break down). Pick up osechi at a department store or supermarket.

Buy a good luck bamboo branch and pray to Ebisu, the patron deity of commerce for success in business, at the Toka Ebisu Festival. This festival is held at many shrines, particularly in Kansai. Imamiya Ebisu Shrine in Osaka is very popular and is visited by one million people each year.

Around the New Year, many Japanese households, neighborhoods, and communities take part in the annual tradition of mochitsuki - pounding rice to make mochi (rice cakes). A quick online search for “mochitsuki festival” might even bring one up in your area!

Carve up the powder in one of Shiga’s winter sports resorts.

You can hit the slopes for the day or stretch it out over the weekend at one of the seven resorts that Shiga has to offer.

Bathe in an open-air garden bath, a cave bath, and a waterfall bath, and then top off your day with a fullcourse crab dinner – all at Kinosaki Onsen.

Beat the chill with a day at Osaka’s hot-and-steamy Spa World, which provides a rare international bathing experience. Soak in a Greek medicinal bath for an hour and relax in a Finnish sauna house for the next.

Go bargain shopping and get yourself a fukubukuro (“mystery bag” or “lucky bag”). A Japanese New Year custom, merchants make grab bags filled with concealed contents and sell them for a substantial discount. Your bag could contain products many times the value you paid.

Get a grand tour of hell, and have a giant oni (demon) give you the “Paradise or hell check” at Senkou-ji Temple in Hirano, Osaka.

Enjoy delicious, deep-fried whatever you like (kushikatsu) while taking in the kitschy charm of Shinsekai and the night views of Osaka from the Tsutenkaku tower.

Get all romantic at Kobe Luminarie once Christmas time rolls around again. Take your special someone to Motomachi to enjoy the city’s famous winter illuminations, put up for two weeks in December.

Spring

Grab a taste of the new season’s sake (rice wine) and enjoy the cherry blossoms while touring Kobe’s Nada district, the world’s top sake-producing region.

Cheer on the local boys at the Osaka spring sumo basho (grand sumo tournament). The competition runs for two weeks in March, and bouts are held daily.

Join the Koinobori (carp streamer) Festa in Golden Week as 1,000 carp streamers fly overhead at Akutagawa Sakurazutumi Park in Takatsuki, Osaka in celebration of Children’s Day.

Plan the perfect hanami picnic in one of Kansai’s many top cherry-blossom viewing spots: Osaka Castle Park; Shukugawa Park, Nishinomiya; Yoshino, Nara; Maruyama Park, Kyoto; Himeji Castle Park, Hyogo; and the list goes on.

Sample some fine drams on the Suntory Yamazaki Whiskey distillery tour, and don’t forget to check out the well-stocked, onsite whiskey library.

Come in costume or camera-in-hand to check out Western Japan’s biggest cosplay extravaganza – the Nipponbashi Street Festa.

Make your own Ramen at Momofuku Ando Instant Ramen Museum in Ikeda, Osaka.

Join the chaos and excitement in Koshien Stadium at a Hanshin Tigers baseball game, or watch the Orix Buffaloes play inside at the Osaka Dome.

Enjoy a two-day extravaganza of live jazz featuring over 300 acts, and more than 3,000 artists, performing in 40 different locations throughout Takatsuki at the Takatsuki Jazz Festival during Golden Week.

Plan your own mini pilgrimage to Koyasan, the Japanese headquarters of Shingon Buddhism. Arrange a temple stay and enjoy the traditional vegan shojin ryori cuisine – the food of the monks.

Summer

Join in the largest summer festival in Kansai – Tenjin Matsuri – ranked as one of the “Top Three” festivals in Japan. It’s known for its boat and land parades, elaborate fireworks shows, and the boat bonfires along the Osaka Okawa River.

Pitch your tent along the shores of Lake Biwa in Shiga and take in the beautiful views surrounding Japan’s largest freshwater lake.

Take the ropeway up Mt. Rokko to enjoy Nunobiki Waterfall and the Nunobiki Herb Garden. The observation deck located just beside the top station offers spectacular views of Kobe and is a popular nightview spot.

Try the culinary delights of Kyoto in the narrow, five-block-long Nishiki Market. Lined with more than 100 shops and restaurants, this lively retail market specializes in all things food and is known as “Kyoto’s kitchen.

Watch the comedy antics of competitors trying to fly their hand-crafted airplanes over Lake Biwa at the Shiga Birdman festival.

Take part in a whale-watching tour with a veteran boat captain in the sea of Nachi Katsuura, Wakayama.

Autumn

Devour roasted chestnuts and momiji tempura (fried maple leaves) while hiking through stunning fall foliage to the waterfall at Minoh.

Visit Saiho-ji in southwest Kyoto. Known as Kokedera, meaning “the moss temple,” the changing leaves in late autumn create a beautiful color contrast with the moss.

Check out the beautiful traditional Japanese art of ukiyo-e at the Kamigata Ukiyoe Museum in Namba, Osaka.

Get ‘spirited away’ on your very own Sen to Chihiro experience at Urashima Onsen, in Wakayama – a labyrinthine bathhouse with a cave onsen offering a stunning view over the ocean.

Great for the kids, Mt. Rokko farm, or “Kobe Rokkosan Pasture” keeps many farm animals including sheep, cows, donkeys, ponies and goats. Try your hand at making ice cream, butter, cheese, or soft caramel.

Learn everything you ever wanted to know about Osaka’s number one soul food, takoyaki, and then make your own octopus-filled snacks at Osaka’s Dotonbori Konamon Museum.

Feed the Iwatayama park monkeys, drink tea among the bamboo groves, and go rafting down the tranquil Hozu river in Arashiyama.

Take a tour of the “Kitchen of Osaka” – Kuromon Market – and sample some fresh sashimi straight off the chopping board. The market contains more than 170 shops selling all kinds of local delicacies, with a focus on fresh seafood.

Get back to nature with some of Kansai’s best hiking trails. Odai-ga-hara is high alpine plateau found deep in Nara’s Yoshino-Kumano National Park. A loop of this mossy upland offers stunning views and a chance to glimpse some rare plants and wildlife.

Experience some of Japan’s finest festivals, including the energetic Kishiwada Danjiri Festival in south Osaka and Kyoto’s serene festival of the ages - Jidai Matsuri.

Kansai’s Best Winter Views Get out from under the kotatsu, put on your winter woollies, and get outside to admire some of Kansai’s majestic snowscapes.

 As the new year begins, the autumn color has long since fallen from the trees, and the days become shorter while the nights get colder, some people will be celebrating winter by dusting off their ski goggles in anticipation of hitting the slopes. Others, however, will retreat under their kotatsu hoping to emerge again when the spring is safely upon us.

But there is another group of people, treading somewhere in the middle ground, who rather like the brisk temperatures and get excited at the thought of a slight dusting of snow.

While much of Japan disappears under many meters of snow from December until well into late spring, for those of us living in the big cities of Kansai it can be easy to forget what a snowflake even looks like, such is the rarity of proper snowfall within the city limits of Osaka or Kyoto.

But luckily, you don’t have to travel far to get your snowy fix for the winter.

Here are a few places that almost always get a decent smattering of the white stuff, particularly if you visit in January or February.

Koyasan

Koyasan is a small temple town high up in the mountains towards the south of Osaka. The area is well-known as the heart of Shingon Buddhism, and here we can find the sect’s main temple, Kongobuji, along with hundreds of other sacred sites. Koyasan is a popular place to visit at anytime of year, but winter usually brings a smattering of snow which gives the old town a mystical feel, and the famous Okunoin cemetery transforms into somewhere truly otherworldly (particularly at dusk). If possible, try to combine a visit with a stay in one the many temples, where you can enjoy a hearty feast of winter vegetable dishes (strictly Buddhist, so no meat) and relax in the warm and serene surroundings, safely tucked away from the biting cold outside.

Mount Kongo

Not too far from Koyasan is the highest point in Osaka prefecture, Mount Kongo. At 1,125 metres tall, the peak is arguably the best place to see snow in Osaka, and makes for a relatively easy day hike from the city. At weekends, throngs of people queue up early for the buses which deliver hikers to the

foot of the mountain, and it’s then a case of huffing and puffing your way up to the top, where there is usually a few inches of snow throughout the winter.

The mountain attracts all sorts of folk, from serious older hikers with elaborate arrays of hiking gear, to yama girls (mountain girls) in their brightly colored kit, to young families carrying sledges and bundled-up babies. The biggest draw in the winter is the juhyo, beautiful frosty ice-covered trees, and amateur photographers with expensive-looking equipment vie for the best photo spots along the trails.

The peak is rather over-developed, so anyone expecting a peaceful escape to nature may be disappointed, but the hut on top offers warm noodles and drinks which may be very welcome to those who easily feel the cold. Most of the trails up the mountain are very clearly marked and simple to follow, but it may be wise to bring some small snow spikes or four-point crampons just in case the paths are icy.

during the winter months, and the mountains surrounding the city are always a good bet for those eager to see a bit of winter whiteness. The culturally significant Mount Hiei is just northeast of Kyoto, lying right on the border with Shiga. The Buddhist temple complex of Enryaku-ji is a tourist hot spot for most of the year, but in the quieter winter months it takes on a more peaceful, reflective tone, made all the more magical if there’s been a light sprinkling of snow.

There are a bunch of trails connecting the various historical sites on the mountain, and cable cars offer an easy way up from either the Kyoto or Shiga sides. The “marathon monks of Hieizan” are famous for the practice of kaihogyo – 100, or occasionally as many as 1,000, consecutive days of long-distance walking. But visitors here can take it slightly easier, and just enjoy the fantastic views out toward Lake Biwa instead.

Mount Atago

Almost directly across from Hieizan, in the northwest corner of Kyoto lies Mount Atago, another towering peak with a sacred shrine on the top. The 924-meter mountain is a straightforward climb, but sees its fair share of

snow in the cold winter months. From the small village of Kiyotaki (access by bus from Kyoto station and Arashiyama), the path winds its way steeply up the mountain, and the whole hike should take between three and five hours to complete.

Kurama

Alternatively, a short 30-minute train ride on the Eizan line from Kyoto’s Demachiyanagi station will whisk you to the picturesque village of Kurama, with its nearby hilltop temple and brooding forests. The station is in a shaded valley which tends to mean snow sticks around for longer, and the area is a pleasant afternoon getaway from the city.

Slightly further afield, the attractive spa resort of Kinosaki is regularly blanketed in snow come winter season, and visitors can escape the cold by taking a dip in one of the many enticing hot springs.

So if you hear the winter calling and simply must feel that soft snowy crunch beneath your feet, there is no need to make a long trip north to the likes of Hokkaido or Nagano, as there are plenty of winter wonderlands to enjoy here on our doorstep.  Osaka Castle ©Tim Wilkinson

My Number: What should I know?

KS caught up with Naoki Maekawa from Shinmei Law to talk about the ins and outs of the new My Number system, and what it means for expats living in Japan.

 By now you should have received your ‘My Number’ via registered mail (don’t lose that vital paper card!), and with the new system going into effect from this month, your next question might be, “What’s up with that?”

In a nutshell, any person residing in Japan for more than three months was, or will be, given a lifelong number for social security and tax purposes. Each resident’s My Number has already been issued by the Japanese government – no choice there – but getting the plastic ID card (containing your photo and an IC chip) from your municipal office is entirely optional. The only thing you must do at this time is supply your My Number to your employer(s), who need it for tax reporting this spring.

However, we were curious to find out a little more, so we sat down with Naoki Maekawa from Shinmei Law to ask a few more questions.

Can my employer find out about my other jobs by the My Number system?

No. Employers are not entitled to access any information connected to a specific My Number.

Will I have to declare my assets in my home country, or in another country?

In the near future, the government wants to gather all information relating to the financial assets for anyone with a My Number, to gain increased taxation income. However, it is unclear how the Japanese government would have the

means to gather all the information concerning one individual – particularly when it comes to foreigners.

The government is using My Numbers to connect information about each individual, and will ask financial institutions, at least in Japan, to give information about who holds accounts with them. However, Japanese law is not always applicable for foreign-based companies and there is no practical way of getting connected with the information systems of other countries.

So the declaring of all assets issue is more of a concern for Japanese people than for expats living in Japan.

What groups in particular in Japan are concerned about assets declaration?

Particularly elderly people living on the base income. A lot of elderly people have a substantial amount of assets in the form of real estate, or financial shares in stocks. If the government can gather such information, it may restrict these elderly people from being granted certain services from the government and municipalities, like use of any public services for free or at reduced cost, because their assets may result in them being recognized as wealthy.

Will I be forced to join the national health and pension system if I haven’t already joined?

Even though everyone living in Japan is supposed to have joined the health and pension system, people won’t be forced to join if they have not already joined. The My Number is for convenience on the government’s side, so people’s daily living won’t be affected. The government wants to reduce the cost and inconvenience of having a lot of different information registered about people in separate locations. They want to get it all together, and in doing so, they hope to reduce the cost of controlling and managing information for individuals and corporations. It doesn’t matter whether you’ve already joined the social welfare system in Japan or not. The main thing you need to worry about with regard to My Number is the privacy of your information.

What privacy concerns are there?

Recently there has been huge controversy on this topic because of invasion of privacy issues. A few incidents have occurred where public officials engaged in the social welfare ministry have been bribed in exchange for contracts to develop software systems for the government. Some lawyers are planning to sue the government, saying My Number is against the Japanese Constitution. I am afraid they are unlikely to win, but it shows that there are big issues concerning privacy.

Everybody should be highly aware of scams asking for their My Number. Again, the elderly are the most vulnerable with regard this. However, everyone should be aware not to disclose their My Number to a third party without a valid reason. If you are required to give your My Number to a third party, you will be required (by public officers) to show your My Number card as well as an additional ID card. Police Officers won’t ask you to show your My Number card. The only people you should ever give your my number to are your employer, the ward office, social welfare services, and the tax office.

I’m not sure whether to get the plastic My Number card or not – should I do this?

It can be used as a form of ID lieu of your current residential card, so it is convenient if you are requiring ID somewhere and for some reason don’t have your residence card. However, although that could be convenient at times, it may not always be wise to use it as a source of ID because the number is shown on the card, which makes it pretty risky.

Is there anything in particular I have to worry about if I am a business owner/employer in Japan?

Yes. It falls to individual employers to handle the My Numbers issued to individual employees and they will be obliged to control and manage such information with the highest care, so if it’s leaked, the employer will be punished. The My Numbers have to be kept secret from a third party, which could be quite a heavy burden.

Of course, you are already obliged to keep certain information about your employees private, but after the My Number is implemented it’s legally burdensome, and there are furtherreaching consequences if you let My Numbers get into the wrong hands.  Naoki Maekawa shinmei-law.com/e english@shinmei-law.com

What’s in the Bento Box? ‘Tis the season to be jolly, and if you’re lucky enough to have been invited into a Japanese home to celebrate the New Year, you’re in for a real treat. Forget everything you might be used to eating at this time of year, shougatsu (New Year) in Japan will have your tastebuds talking about a totally different kind of culinary delight.

Osechi ryouri, special New Year’s food, comes in the form of the fanciest bento (lunch box) you will ever see. The three-tiered boxes are known as jubako, and stack together neatly in the same way as your standard bento box. Foods in osechi are pickled, salted, and cooked in such a way that they can last many days.

In ancient Japan, it was believed that toshigami-sama (the year god) visited the people in the shougatsu period, and the Japanese New Year foods and rituals were all done and prepared in order to welcome the toshigami to their homes and bring them happiness for the year.

The year-end house clean (nenmatsu no osouji) and making (or buying) osechi prior to January 1st is also done for the practical reason that homemakers do not want to be tied up in the kitchen during sanganichi (the first three days of the year) when every family member is at home on holiday for the purpose of visiting their relatives.

Many of the food items in osechi have special meanings, and knowing your New Year’s food is bound to impress your host. So saddle up for the occasion with this list of New Year’s food items.

T’s Diner

You’d be forgiven for mistaking T’s Diner for the set of Happy Days. Kitted out as an authentic 50’s diner, the interior is part of the overall dining experience. If you’re searching for authentic American-style hamburgers, you’ll be hard pressed to find anywhere that hits as close to the mark as T’s.

With a good selection of curries, diners can choose from mild to ultra-spicy. You can also find handmade egg noodles and traditional Thai hotpot on the menu. We recommend going between the hours of 11:30am and 3pm in order to get the daily lunch-set special. Dee Dee has a small play area for the kids too. Overall a very pleasant dining experience.

Coffee conundrums no more!

Four Osaka spots to get your thoughts outside the box when it comes to your next cup of joe.

 It was New Year’s Day in Osaka. You woke up immediately aware of the consequences of over-partying, and what’s worse, there seemed to be no café that could alleviate the pain. The kissaten around the corner had more smoke than air, Starbucks offered nothing but pre-diabetic conditions, and Doutor’s clientele was too suspicious looking, leaving you with nothing but that last-ditch option: pinching your nose while suffering through yet another ¥100 Boss Black.

Pinch no more! While Kobe and Kyoto are known as the Kansai café hot spots, and these do indeed have a higher proportion of quality locations, Osaka has a number of good joints as well – you just have to look for them. Thankfully, Kansai Scene has done the work for you, so you will never have to drink vending-machine coffee again.

Many café owners speak with a nearly religious reverence of one Amemura location, going as far as to leave their own cafés for a cup of its specialty joe. That location is Lilo Coffee Roasters. Lilo was established by a hair designer named Hotty in 2014 after the delicious coffee served at her salon (located on the third floor above Lilo) led to demand for a café.

Popular among foreigners for its free Wi-Fi and quiet atmosphere (both about as common in Osaka cafés as Yomiuri Giants fans), Lilo has more than 16 different coffees to choose from, among which the Dominican comes highly recommended (for non-coffee drinkers, the chai is also popular).

What’s more, the coffee lives up to its reputation. At most mainstream cafés, customers are moved down the line like addicts at a methadone clinic – one shot and you’re out the door. As a result, the coffee is usually too bitter, too weak, or too stale, often filling the air with its offensive aroma. But Lilo’s coffee takes time, even if the café is empty.

But the wait is worth it – when you drink it, you can taste every minute.

Lilo also has beers available, as well as coffee machinery, t-shirts and lots and lots of business cards. It’s located right next to the curiosity shop Village Vanguard, so if you need some caffeine before you can handle VV’s eclectic array of giant lollipops and bad haircuts, Lilo is literally right next door.

Go south two blocks, turn left and you’ll find yourself at Banco, a neighborhood favorite for 14 years. Said to be a popular hangout for Osaka hipsters, Banco separates itself from other cafés through its cluttered interior, which defies the too-clean chain aesthetic of having every table and chair in a straight line, each identical to the next, often screwed into the floor so that nothing may upset the appearance of order. All of Banco’s table and chairs are… well, wherever the last customer left them. But that’s all part of the fun.

Banco’s coffee is comparable to Lilo’s (the staff, as it happens, are Lilo fans), and it offers delicious Italian cuisine, from pizza to paninis, all at affordable prices that shame the typical Kansai trattoria (lunch goes for ¥1,000). A

banco espresso goes for ¥330, and they also serve shakeratos (a shot of espresso poured over ice cubes and then shaken), a customer favorite especially in summer. Unlike even Osaka’s best cafes, Banco is open until 2am, with a bar available, so you can caffeinate yourself through work in the morning, then flush away your woes at night.

Bicycles and coffee go hand-in-hand at Giracha, located a few blocks over from Amemura in Minami-Horie.

Its slogan? “BICYCLE and COFFEE.” Established in 2014, Giracha has something for bicycle lovers, coffee lovers, and bicycle-slash-coffee-shop lovers alike. The store is usually quiet, so you don’t have to shout over other customers, though it is possible you’ll have to shout over the bikes.

In a country overflowing with shuu cream (from the French choux a la creme – and nothing to do with shoes), they’re also known for being the only location in Osaka with the audacity to sell jelly (jam) donuts (¥300, yeah, but there’s no chance you’ll find this at a Krispy Kreme). With Horie Park and a number of preschools nearby, Giracha is a hotspot for moms, even featuring a ¥100 non-caffeine “Chibi-cino” to silence children who beg their mothers to let them try espresso. Ironically, Giracha does not service mamacharis, but as co-owner Reny says, “Don’t feel like you have to buy a bike to come and get a coffee.”

If you’re further north and looking for local coffee spot, look no further than the hipster haven of Nakazakicho. Make your first stop iTohen, a gallery-café dedicated to the artistic experience. Filled with art books (most for sale), and featuring exhibits unlike what you’ll find elsewhere in Osaka (during my visit – model cities made out of car parts). iTohen was founded in 2003 by Kagoshima native Ajisaka Kanemitsu, who currently teaches at Nakazakicho Design School. Earlier in his life, Ajisaka visited New York City and was inspired by the diverse range of galleries there. He established iTohen as a counterforce in a country where he thought art was misunderstood, underappreciated, or even dismissed.

With its vast collection of art books, one could spend a lifetime in iTohen and never be bored, but the food is just as sure to garner appreciation. The coffee is rated highly by customers, and the French toast is as decadent and guilt-inducing as a meal comes.

But if you don’t order the food, at least look at the cutlery – iTohen pays such attention to detail that even the butter knives are aesthetically pleasing.

Good cafés in Osaka are not always easy to find, but now there’s no excuse for walking into Starbucks for a shortage of worthwhile alternative options.

If you’re lacking a New Year’s resolution, patronizing a local, home-grown café is not a bad place to start. 

Through bitterly cold winds, hundreds of young near-naked men scramble to get lucky charms! This extraordinary Buddhist event is held annually as the ending ceremony of an essential ritual to start a New Year. Around 2:30pm, paper talismans are cast from the ceiling of Rokujido hall. Young men wearing only loincloth and footwear bravely jostle each other to get the charms. The name of Doyadoya came from the Japanese expression meaning hundreds of people loudly bursting into a place.

Consider this slightly off-the-beaten-track destination for a short getaway. A peaceful farming district, Aritagawa-cho presents a spectacular light show again this year. Uniquely fan-shaped rice terraces called “Aragi Island” will be illuminated with 3,000 LED lights. Loved by the villagers, these terraces were designated as a National Important Cultural Landscape in 2013. There are some hot spring facilities and inns in the area and local cuisine never disappoints visitors. During the daytime, the pleasant surroundings can be very enjoyable for a stroll.

February 3rd is setsubun, meaning the day before the beginning of spring. It is also the Lunar New Year’s Eve ceremony, in which beans are thrown to drive away evil spirits, takes place at temples and shrines across Japan. Many families still now perform the ceremony to bring good fortune for the year to come. One of historic Shinto shrines, Taga-taisha also celebrates its Setubun Sai. Hundreds of people who will reach the age of 60 this year will toss beans and mochi (rice cakes) from a platform into a crowd. Join the crowd scrambling to catch the beans. ASUKA NAKAYAMA Exhibition This young artist, Asuka Nakayama, was born in 1986 and graduated from Kyoto City University of Art. This is her first solo show at Gallery Yamaki Fine Art, an exhibition which will introduce her recent works. Her powerful and passionate coloring techniques on huge canvases has produced a body of work featuring arranged furniture and garden scenes full of vegetation. The theme of her work is “The relationship between nature and human itself as a mixture of coexistence and domination.” She is notable for creating fantastical atmospheres in mysterious-looking rooms absent of humans. At the same time, gardens represent the connections between human and nature. Her pieces invite viewers to consider the boundaries of the real and unreal world. Before this, she was invited to present her first-ever solo exhibition in the Okanoyama Museum of Art Nishiwaki, Hyogo. Visit

Sanadamaru Special Exhibition – Pictures of Beautiful Women, Pictures of Warriors, Swords and Masterpieces of Modern Japanese Art

Takayuki Masaki (1895–1985) was born in Sensu, Osaka (another name for Izumi city) and became an art collector and the founder of Masaki Art Museum, which has collected more than 1,300 pieces. To celebrate his 120th anniversary, the museum is holding a special exhibition under the theme of “snow” (setsu), “moon” (tsuki) and “flower” (ka) (snow = winter, moon = autumn, and flower = spring), themes often seen in Japanese artworks. “I remember you especially when snow, the moon, or flowers are beautiful,” is a phrase from an old Chinese poem anthology, (Hakushimonjyu), which was popularized in the Heian era by the calligrapher Fujiwara no Yukinari. This exhibition coincides with the release of NHK’s new, yearlong historical TV drama Sanadamaru, based on the life of 17th century military commander, Yukimura Sanada. The show is set in the feudal period and features the historical character Yodo-dono - Hideyoshi Toyotomi’s consort sokushitsu. Her life and story has grown to symbolise the women who lived during the Sengoku era and this exhibition offers visitors an insight into how women existed and conducted their lives during this intense war period. Also on display will be the brilliant works of sword maker Gassan Sadakazu and other paintings of women by Shohaku Soga (1730–1781) and Shoen Uemura (1875–1949).

On-Matsuri is a festival held at Wakamiya-jinja Shrine which stands in the precincts of the Kasuga Taisha Grand Shrine. It has been held every year since Heian period (the 12th century), and December 2015 was the 880th time. The festival is for offering the Wakamiya god performances such as the Japanese theatrical dance Kagura, and Japanese classical music Gagaku and Nou. 2015 Fall & Winter Collection, Eastern & Western Women Exhibition – Renoir, Kisling, Ryohei Koiso, Shoen Uemura, and More Women; universally the eternal subject of the painter.

Steady eyes, solemn gaze, sitting, standing, still, in motion, ball gown or kimono clad. French Impressionist painter Renoir (1841–1919) is known for his memorable portraits, and as a celebrator of beauty, especially feminine sensuality. Renoir's paintings are esteemed for their vibrant light and saturated color, most often focusing on people in intimate and candid poses. In true Impressionist style, Renoir depicted details of a scene through freely brushed touches of color, so that his figures blended seamlessly with one another and their surroundings.

At this exhibition, visitors can also enjoy Japanese painters, such as Shoen Uemura (1875–1949), who was born and raised in Kyoto. Having grown up surrounded by the traditional culture of Kyoto, it is easy to see this influence in her portrayal of women. She was born two months after the death of her father and thus grew up together with her mother and sister in an all-female household. As a child, she had much practice drawing human figures, as her mother’s tea shop attracted a refined, cultured clientele for the art of Japanese tea ceremony. Also on show are works from Ryohei Koiso, Shinsui Ito, Kokei Kobayashi, Kisling, and Monet. Take the time to treat yourself to this beautiful exhibition.

Jack Tempchin

In 1972, the Eagles released their debut album, and included on it was the track Peaceful Easy Feeling. The writer of the song was U.S. singer-songwriter Jack Tempchin. While living in Los Angeles and trying to break into the music industry, Eagles’ Glenn Frey heard Tempchin’s version of the song and asked if he could use the song with his new band.

As well as being involved with other Eagles tracks and with other artists, Jack Tempchin has also released nine albums of his own since his self-titled 1978 debut. His latest is the 2015 album Learning To Dance.

In an interview last year he explained that he had been releasing albums himself via the internet, and after signing to Blue Elan Records, “My brain exploded with millions of new songs.”

Television

An influential band of the 70s and an early member of the 1970’s New York rock scene, Television released the debut album Marquee Moon in 1977. The album received mixed reactions at the time, but went on to be ranked 128 on Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums Of All Time (2003). Breaking up after the 1978 album Adventure, the band came back together 14 years later in 1992 to record the album Television.

Tom Verlaine, Billy Ficca, and Fred Smith from the Marquee Moon days are still members of the current lineup and only guitarist Richard Lloyd has moved on to be replaced by Jimmy Rip. There has been talk for some time of a new album but sadly it doesn’t seem to be happening.

Zebrahead

2016 marks 20 years since four musicians came together to form the band Zebrahead. Of those four musicians, drummer, Ed Udhus, and bassist, Ben Osmundson, are still there today.

Classified under a number of different genre titles (punk rock, pop punk, rap rock, rapcore etc.), the band last year released its 12th studio album, Walk The Plank (the Japanese version contains three bonus tracks).

The catchy album was reviewed by Ultimate Guitar as “by far their most varied and experimental.” Prior to the release, bassist, Ben Osmundson, said “Touring all the time and traveling can be a bit of a pirates’ sort of life so it fits in that sense (the album title). So in a way to us it’s about taking a chance in life and walking the plank of life.”

Jacob Koller and Julee Karan

Originally from Phoenix, Arizona, pianist Jacob Koller moved to Japan seven years ago. In that time, he has recorded six solo albums as well as many collaborations with other musicians. A student of both jazz and classical piano, he began playing professionally when he was just 14 years old, and two years later began teaching.

For this particular gig at Mister Kelly’s, Osaka, Jacob Koller teams up with Japanese jazz vocalist Julee Karan.

This isn’t the first time though that the two have worked together musically, Karan was a guest vocalist on the 2011 Jacob Koller album Cinematic Piano Paradise, singing the Sting track Shape of my Heart taken from the movie Léon.

Interview Stratovarius Formed in Finland in 1984, Stratovarius has released 16 studio albums, four DVDs, and three live albums. Alongside German bands Helloween, Blind Guardian, and Gamma Ray, they are considered one of the most influential groups of the power metal genre. We spoke with bassist Lauri Porra prior to the band’s upcoming visit to Japan.

Last year saw the release of the band’s 16th studio album, Eternal. With the line-up changes over the years, would you say that Stratovarius has changed musically at all since the 1989 debut Fright Night?

For sure there have been developments in the sound of the band. Each new member brings in a new set of influences to add to the classic sound of Stratovarius. The band has been active during three decades and also the surrounding world has changed. Music is always a reflection of the times we are in, so that is also a factor. I believe that over the course of time, Stratovarius has proven to be a band that can survive great changes and turmoil. The result is more than the sum of its parts.

Will the Japan set list be mainly new material or a wide mix from the Stratovarius discography?

Stratovarius has a great history with Japan, and we are very excited to come back to play in this beautiful country. Stratovarius always tries to create the setlist to fit the country we are playing in. We will be presenting some songs from our latest album Eternal. But also we will bring a nice selection of the old Stratovarius classics. Maybe we will also add a couple of songs that the fans in Japan haven’t heard in a concert for a long time.

Outside of Stratovarius, each band member has been involved in other musical projects. Would you say that Stratovarius is just now one of those projects or is it the central core that is kept fresh and alive by the other interests and projects?

Stratovarius is a combination of very talented and versatile musicians, all of which sometimes also do other musical projects outside the band. For instance, our keyboard player, Jens Johansson, will be performing with Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow next summer. I believe that all this variety in the band members’ musical lives brings more musical possibilities to the band, but I can assure that when the band is together doing Stratovarius shows and albums, everybody is putting in 100 percent.

Circus Circus welcomes Berlin-based Belgian techno DJ/ producer, Peter Van Hoesen, who is one of the resident DJs of The Labyrinth, a popular electronic-dancemusic festival in Niigata. He runs his own label Time To Express, collaborates as Sendai with Yves De Mey, and is continuously releasing podcasts for CLR, RA, XLR8R and Smoke Machine. As a producer, he is best known for his stripped-down, abstract, and dark techno productions, but as a DJ he combines different genres and decades of dance music to create captivating musical journeys. In November 2015, he released a special compilation album, Stealth, which contains 14 tracks from his closest friends including Mike Parker, Voices From the Lake, Material Object, and Bee Mask, as well as his own work.
