It’s either gradient or gridlock

Japan’s rugged volcanic topography dictates how and where the roads crisscross the land. Unsurprisingly, they either go over the mountains or around them.

Those elegant concrete bridges and bullet-straight tunnels you might have seen cutting through Japan’s highlands - they’re not for you. You are generally left with a stark choice: Do you take the narrow mountain road and test your legs, or do you cruise and cough down the busy main roads that link small town after small town? Depending on the length of your trip you’ll probably want a bit of both, but it’s nearly always one or the other.

In the saddle, you won’t get much respect

Start practicing your sarcastic hand gestures and nonverbal road rage because you’re not going to get a lot of love out there on the tarmac. In a country full of cyclists so used to riding bikes on the pavement, into oncoming traffic, or generally wherever they please, drivers don’t seem to have a lot of time for cyclists who prefer to obey the law. Expect to be honked at and pushed around a bit.

Occasionally a sign for a cycle path (saikuringu rōdo) will appear like an oasis in the desert. Beware: they are sirens and they are out to get you. A beautiful woodland path will meander deep into the thicket and then stop suddenly; an oceanside drive will peter out into a sand dune; a cruise through the rice fields will throw you headfirst into a muddy paddy. Avoid them. They are not to be trusted.

If you’re planning a trip for a few days or longer you will undoubtedly spend time poring over maps and calculating the minutiae of your proposed mileage.

Do so. It is certainly important to know how far you intend to go each day. However, there are things on the road that will play a much bigger part in how much you either enjoy or despise your day in the saddle. Terrain, traffic and weather are all worth researching before you head out. And remember, wind is the invisible enemy.

Out of the saddle, you’re in good hands

In contrast, you will encounter nothing but gracious hospitality and genuine concern for your welfare (and sanity) when you are looking for help - and even when you’re not. A request for water, suido-mizu, will never be turned down and you may well stand befuddled for a moment as your simple request snowballs into an offer of dinner and a futon for the night. Learn to say yes. And thank you.

 It’s amazing the satisfaction something as simple as a bike ride can bring; that feeling of freedom while freewheeling down a slope of smooth, sealed road, the wind at your back; the invincibility summoned by overcoming a tough, steep, thigh-sizzling hill climb; the close connection with the beauty of the landscape around you as you pedal along; feeling as though you’ve been smelling the roses the whole time, despite not having actually stopped.

This was Daniel Olsson’s sentiment after completing what can only be described as an epic journey across Japan on a bike. In a not-so-simple biking challenge, this 27-year-old Omihachiman resident of three years, originally from Skipton in north Yorkshire, England, rode the entire length of Japan from Cape Sata in Kyushu to Cape Soya in Hokkaido between May and July this year.

As to be expected with a trip like this, it was quite a feat in planning as well - scrutinizing maps, calculating kilometers, overnight stops, possible traffic, terrain and of course, preparing for a broad spectrum of weather conditions. Keeping in mind that you can only stow so much in a set of panniers.

He wrote in the June issue of KS that he expected the ride to be hard on his legs and on his backside, but more compellingly, he predicted that eventually, it would be hardest on his mind.

“Going solo is my biggest trepidation” he wrote. “Not just riding but camping, eating, and sleeping alone”.

Understandably so. Apart from a ride around Lake Biwa, and a bit of a longer excursion riding from Shiga to Gifu, Daniel had no experience with big rides, or with doing them alone.

He set off from his starting point, Cape Sata, on May 20th, and just to test his nerves, Kyushu threw a couple of early curveballs in the form of wild animals.

“My first night I was at a campsite very close to Cape Sata, so it was on the ocean, very beautiful but there was nobody around and this campsite wasn’t near anything else...I pitched my tent and I was starting to cook my dinner when a wild boar came out of the woods”.

The beast sniffed at his tent for the best part of an hour while Daniel hovered awkwardly around his camp cooker, about 10 meters away, hoping it wouldn’t take too much notice of him.

“I would look at it, and it would look at me, and we’d just look at each other for a bit and then we’d both look away and kind of carry on, but eventually it moved slowly away.”

“I went and got in my tent and zipped it up and just hoped it would leave me alone, and it did, but I wasn’t so comfortable that night”.

The following day, it was a troop of 40 monkeys in the middle of the road, with attitude.

“There were some big, old ones that didn’t want to move...so I just had to give them a kind of wide berth while they gave me the evil eye”.

Later, after dark, the weather had its turn. Kyushu treated him to a huge electrical storm while he was camped out in the middle of the woods by himself.

“It was literally like, flash! Bang!

And I was quivering under my little millimeter-thick canvas.

“My first two nights camping alone in strong winds with boars and monkeys around really kind of tested me, I was really wondering what I had gotten myself in for”.

After the initial beginners’ jitters, however, and fewer encounters with bad weather and wild animals, Daniel began to settle into his journey nicely, averaging around 80 to 100 km a day and lucking out with fabulous conditions.

“There were some days when I woke up in my tent and the sun was shining, and maybe it sounds a bit clichéd, but I really did feel a real sense of freedom; that I could just lie there for as long as I want or I could get on my bike and go in any direction I wanted.”

“I arrived at both those places in the early evening and the setting sun would just kind of light the area perfectly and it was - slightly breathtaking.”

The two toughest climbs: Mount Aso in Kyushu, and Hachimantai in Iwate prefecture.

“Mount Aso is the volcano in central Kyushu and it’s still quite active, so I wanted to visit that because at the top you can go right up and go and look at the smoky stuff.

“Cycling up it was really tough; it took me about three hours of climbing, and it’s about 15 km, so I was going about 5 km an hour, which is kind of walking pace, but I was still cycling.”

As with any adventure though, so much of it is made memorable by the people you meet, and Daniel found himself seeking out others wherever he could. His predictions were right - the feeling of aloneness was his Achilles’ heel.

“There were nights where I was lonely, and it’s not a nice feeling to be lonely. I realized pretty quick that having company was better than being alone in the evening, so if ever I could find a host, or just a campsite with some other people in it I was always much happier I guess. I definitely preferred it when I had someone to talk to in the evenings.”

He got in contact with several of his hosts through couchsurfing. Out of his 50 days on the road, roughly 20 were hosted, sometimes by English teachers, and often by young Japanese people who wanted to practice their English.

One couple that hosted him loaded his dinner table with some of the best sashimi and tempura he had ever eaten, then over the course of the evening, he realized he was somewhat of a village attraction.

“I guess I was a bit exotic for them, because they lived right out in the countryside and it was a big deal to have a foreigner there, so there was a constant stream of their friends and relatives coming to look at me.”

Moving north, naturally one of the most interesting areas to ride through was Miyagi prefecture, where Daniel observed the effects of the March 2011 tsunami firsthand.

“Certainly the effects of the tsunami are still very evident. I was following the coast road and the terrain there is very up and down. So I’d climb up and there’d be some homes and stuff and then I’d go down and the homes just stopped and it was just completely destroyed still.”

It was in Miyagi prefecture that he finally got to pay a visit to Ogatsu-cho, part of Ishinomaki city, and home to the Ogatsu School Restoration Project which, through his epic bike ride, he aims to raise $10,000 for.

Project leader Gentaro Yui and the 2,300 people that have played a part in the project so far are hoping to establish the school as a community center focused on environmental and sustainable living, and educating kids on how to live sustainably.

Daniel arrived in Japan two weeks before the March 2011 tsunami, to teach at a privately-owned eikaiwa in Omihachiman. His time in Japan has been parallel with the recovery effort after the Tohoku earthquake, which is what inspired him to dedicate his trip to this project.

Daniel’s journey culminated on July 8th with a picture-perfect finish at Cape Soya in Hokkaido.  His support for the Ogatsu School Restoration Project continues, and he is about halfway to his goal of raising $10,000 for the cause. It is worth remembering to cover up pale limbs (wear a rash guard) and slap on the sunscreen, because the sun is intense here and UV rays are five times more powerful than those we experience in Kansai.

Just opposite the hotel is the Ryukyu No Kaze, a semi-open air complex serving izakaya fare and stocking a range of souvenirs including Okinawan Awamori sake and locally-grown brown sugar. It’s also a great place to enjoy the melodies of the traditional Ryukyu sanshin (shamisen), with performances every night of the week. A free shuttle bus operates around the grounds of the complex, stopping at the various resort restaurants (Yakiniku, Chinese, Italian) and its other hotels. To explore the rest of the island, visitors need to arrange a taxi or a rental car.

Finding your way through Fabulous Fukushima Fukushima is a hidden gem, teeming with narrow lanes of inviting bars, hole-in-the-wall eateries and friendly locals.

 The Fukushima area of Osaka is a sparkly gem of deliciousness. Arrive on a Friday or Saturday night, and the exuberance oozing from the JR Fukushima station alone will genki up your mood immediately. It is a place to eat and drink, meet and greet, and discover and learn. Follow the young salaryman crowd to a favourite izakaya, chat to friendly locals, or check out some of these Fukushima feel-good options.

Near JR Fukushima Station

The first things to catch your eye as you leave the station are the Shichifukujin (Seven Deities of Good Luck) artworks by the creative designer Grind Pencil.

Modern and ultra colorful, they are definitely part of the happy welcome that Fukushima provides.

Cross the street and drop in at the casual and cosy stand-up wine bar Anniversary 2001 . Friendly owner Nakamura-san will gladly pour your wine, and prepare some tempting French finger foods to satisfy your cravings.

Live music starts at 8pm almost every night with no charge, and instantly amps up customer connectivity.

On-the-street drinking and chatting is certainly something to savor.

Just across from here with the yellow abstract art work is Laxa Square, where farmers’ markets are held every Saturday from 10am–3pm.

If the summer heat is diluting your power, why not grab some healthy produce and head to Hanshin Hotel for its well-known hot spring baths. Its latest summer campaign offers special massage and akasuri body scrub packages for both men and women at discounted prices until the end of September.

If you are looking for restaurants, do a right U-turn out of the station and follow the road heading back under the train tracks. Luce Birreria and Pizzeria is a family-friendly option open for lunch and dinner, with a distinct lightand-cheery mood. Abundant fresh ingredients make their pizzas look like pop art, and the antipasto options are zesty and satisfying.

Start with a ¥300 draft beer, then move onto an international beer or adventurous beer cocktail. For another kind of bold experience, grab a namachu beer at the izakaya-style, street food champion Tottsuan next door. Young, exuberant staff in head towels cheerfully chorus Osaka-ben to welcome you warmly and entertain you throughout

your meal. The fresh seafood selection and generously-sized tempura on sticks are happy additions. For more good vibes and buzzing atmosphere, keep walking further down for other popular restaurants like Nukumi and ¡Qué Rico!, and the billiards bar Nine Up.

Fukushima Shotengai Strolling

Turn left out of the station, over the train tracks, and make an immediate turn down into this modernized yet still retro-laden shotengai. Drop in anywhere that takes your fancy. You’ll be surprised and intrigued by what you can find here.

Perhaps even stay overnight at the J Hoppers Guesthouse with no curfew if you plan to have a late night out.

They rent out bicycles for ¥500 a day, so another neat option is to explore the surrounding areas of Fukushima on wheels. (Nakazaki-cho, Utsubo Park, Nakatsu, and Tenma are all a very easy bike ride away.)

Walk further down to the long-running Dai Ichi meat shop run by sweet and chatty locals. Highly recommended are the “Lucky Korokke” which are so

good, and so cheap at only ¥35 on halfprice Fridays.

Munch on a few korokke (croquette), and keep walking toward the Michelin starred soba shop Sobakiri Karani, run

by Kiyoshi Hashimoto and his wife.

It is a place where you can experience not only authentic food prepared with gentle care, but surrender to a flow of time that demands no rush.

The rhythm here always begins with a slow drink followed by appetizers, then soba (buckwheat noodles), then finally soba-yu (soba water) to end the meal.

Sake enthusiasts will delight in the range available, and foodies can relish appetizer choices like saiboshi (smoked horse), dashimaki (egg roll), kamowan (duck soup), and shougaten (ginger tempura). Hosogiri soba and arabiki soba are made on site, and taste amazing.

Add the teapot of soba-yu to your leftover dipping sauce after you finish eating, sip gently, and relish this meal

of elegant simplicity. It is only a small shop of about twelve seats, so try not to be the KY (kuuki yomenai - “can’t read the air”) foreigner ignorant of the type of environment you are in.

Good manners and awareness are always welcomed.

The labyrinth of magical lanes can be reached by exiting the station and turning right. As you walk straight toward Sonezaki street, see if you can spot the ancient Enmei-yu bath house, and the ever-popular Italian shokudo (eatery) area of Bar Porcini, Taverna Porcini, and the Pane Porcini bread shop.

Once you cross over the main intersection and walk one block to the temple on the corner, spectacular oden (vegetables, eggs, tofu, etc. soaked in a special, steaming broth) shops are right there waiting for you. If you come to Fukushima only for the Hanakujira

Oden (where, if you’re curious, you can order whale meat), you will not be disappointed. It is the definite highlight of the area. Expect to line up unless you arrive at 4:15 for the opening at 4:30 as it is tremendously popular.

After dinner, take a stroll toward Dojima river past ABC Hall, and be wowed by the pretty river lights and modern skyline. Famous Hawaiian café Bogarts is a great location for a decadent morning meet-up, sitting on the terrace looking out onto the river.

Their weekday brunch set is only ¥850 with yummy selections like pancakes, bagels, and eggs benedict.

However you choose to experience Fukushima, it is certainly a charismatic and exciting place to be. 

Amemura Dreams of Pinball Unleash your inner pinball wizard at the biggest pinball arcade outside of North America!

 Silver Ball Planet is now Japan’s pinball mecca, and being the biggest pinball arcade outside the U.S. is no empty boast. Opened in December 2013, the space in Big Step, Shinsaibashi started with about 30 machines and has more than doubled to over 70, with plans for further additions soon.

If there’s been a popular comic book, or American pop-culture TV show or movie, you can bet a pinball machine has been made for it, and chances are you can find it at Silver Ball Planet.

Be prepared for the tidal wave of nostalgia as you step into this pinball machine hall of fame. Classics such as Batman, Terminator 2, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Indiana Jones are all waiting to entertain you.

You’ll find the best-selling pinball machine of all time, The Addams Family (1991), next to newer machines based on popular icons in today's movies such as Iron Man (2010) and X-Men (2012).

Housing so many games takes an impressive space. Red cement floors and white walls encase this space which is dotted with black couches for taking a break from the action.

American movies are projected onto the walls giving it the feel of a New York City loft.

Of course, the Western atmosphere is not by chance. Yuske Namba, Creative Director of Big Step and genuine pinball enthusiast, has crafted this mood in the hopes of reminding Osakans of the original Amemura vibe, and bringing to Japan not just pinball, but the culture it was born out of.

These pinball machines represent Western pop culture and I want to bring this to a new generation of Japanese.”

“It makes me feel good to see a father teaching his son or daughter to play pinball, a young couple enjoying a drink on one of the couches after playing a game together, or a group of girls taking pictures with the machines shouting “kawai!” as they try something that is new and part of a culture they enjoy.”

Silver Ball Planet has something for everyone. The venue hosts private parties and even monthly IFPA (International Flipper Pinball Association) tournaments on the last Saturday of every month with no entry fee; guests just pay per game as they go. This attracts some of the best players in Japan, and competitors as far as Hong Kong are known to make the trip.

But rest assured the tournaments aren’t just for the pro’s. Everybody, Japanese and Western, pro and novice, all come together to play in this space.

Even the very top-ranked players are often more than keen to share their strategies for each table, because each has its own quirks, and are happy giving tips to new players and new friends.

So get on down to Big Step in Amemura and climb the stairs to Silver Ball Planet where good fun and nostalgia await you. 

A Vegetable Paradise

Tucked away in a quiet little corner of the neighborhood is La Lanterna di Genova. This Italian restaurant’s warm and inviting ambience is perfect for a romantic dinner, or a nice relaxing evening with a few friends. Each dish is carefully prepared to perfection by Italian owner-chef Silvia using marketfresh ingredients. You’ll find select Italian wines on the list, some at pretty intimidating prices, but their house wine also pairs well with the dishes on the menu and can be ordered by the glass, half-liter, or bottle. Main dishes include such delicacies as roasted duck, ostrich steak, and seasonal fish wrapped in baking paper and cooked with mini tomatoes, olives, pine nuts and a white wine sauce. You’d also be wise to try the pasta Genovese made with fresh aromatic basil, or gnocchi in a rich gorgonzola cheese sauce.

Just off of the Nakazaki Shotengai is Aju, a small place specializing in organic and all-vegetarian dishes. Their bento lunches are a great deal and will surely fill you up. For just ¥600 you can get a Japanese-style veggie burger and sides of fried koyadofu (freeze-dried tofu) and stir-fried vegetables with rice. For dinner there’s a wide variety of vegetarian izakaya-style dishes like soy-meat yakitori, fried avocado, and vegan-cheese pizza. Vegetarians can rest assured that no meat, fish, eggs, or milk is used at all in the dishes served here. For those who enjoy cooking at home, there’s also a selection of vegetarian and organic ingredients and seasonings like organic miso soup, dehydrated soy meat, or vegan mayonnaise. Aju is a healthy treat for vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike.

For a cozy place to kick back and relax, head over to Subako, a small café bar just around the corner from the station. However hungry you are, you’re sure to find exactly what you want, from simple snacks like cheese and crackers or edamame, to full meals like their original curry or the one-plate special of the day. Subako’s charming atmosphere makes it feel less like a restaurant and more like a friendly neighbor’s house, complete with classic Japanese lighting and furniture that looks like it might have come from your grandmother’s basement. The low coffee tables are especially suited for chatting with friends over a cup of tea and a slice of cake. The sweets menu changes regularly, but if available, go for the orange cheesecake served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and topped with a small slice of candied orange.

The most earnest movie in the franchise to date. The film explores the complex ape society in real depth and although there isn’t as much action as some would like, when it does kick-off…things get wild!

Hailed by some as this generation’s Star Wars, Guardians of the Galaxy has been attracting attention since its very first trailer hit earlier this year. Expanding its universe, Marvel has stepped out from its comfort zone of instantly recognizable comic book characters and is exploring some of its more obscure franchises, which will still be tied into the overarching narrative loosely weaved between every Marvel movie to date.

Needless to say, it is a huge gamble; not only are these characters all but unknown, they are taking the fight to space, which normally marks a studio clutching at straws. But the film not only captures the huge scale of a galaxy littered with different species, it is also able to give each of the guardians a backstory compelling enough to make us care about each and every one of them; a task that took The Avengers years to accomplish.

Following the interstellar abduction of a young Peter Quill, the first third of the movie is spent getting to know each of the five heroes and the perils they face.

An early incarceration instantly showcases the chemistry these five share and the complicated relationships between them are balanced perfectly. The danger they face is fittingly grand and although Ronan the Accuser is not the most original of bad guys, he does pose a very real threat.

The quirky comedy that James Gunn fans enjoyed in Slither and Super is present here in spades, but the brutal violence is toned down to family-friendly action, which is still very exciting. Chris Pratt shines as the leading man, Zoe Saldana is perfect for the fiery Gamora, and Vin Diesel and Bradley Cooper each put in great voice acting work (although Cooper has a few more lines to learn). The real surprise however is Dave Bautista, who is both brutal and believable as Drax and the best pro wrestler in a movie since Hulk Hogan in Mr. Nanny.

Asuka village is the place where Japanese history started.

Grave mounds, ruins, palace sites and old temples scattered around this historic village will be illuminated with candles, lanterns, and 3D Projection Mapping technology. See the giant art work of a phoenix made of bamboo and a picture “painted” with 5,000 colourful candles. Enjoy live music performances at old temples and a period play at the ancient stone tomb. Sarusawa Pond, Nara

A colourful water pageant will take place at the scenic Sarusawa-ike in Nara. Come and see the elegant boating parade held by ancient court people to appreciate the moon at its fullest and brightest. Legend has it that an uneme threw herself into this pond in despair after falling out of favour with the emperor. This dazzling event is also performed to comfort the spirit of the uneme. There will be an elaborate parade of people dressed in 8th century attire walking from JR Nara station through Sanjo-dori to the pond, followed by a religious ceremony and then the boating.

Iwashimizu Hachimangu Shrine, Kyoto

For a truly memorable experience, come to the Iwashimizu Sai Festival where historic ceremonies take place one after another. This is one of the three religious festivals held by the Imperial ordinance in Japan. Situated on a quiet hillside, the Iwashimizu Hachimangu shrine hosts ancient rituals according to the old protocol. In the early morning before dawn, 500 people holding paper lanterns and dressed in special attire will leave the main shrine hall and follow the path to the subsidiary shrine, tongu, where various ceremonies will be performed. The procession will go back to the main shrine on the top of the hill in the evening.

This exhibit of new work by Japan based, American artist DAAS is an evolving series of acrylic and mixed media paintings inspired by the art form of origami, geometric shapes and organic textures. By referencing the crease patterns and designs created by folding paper, the paintings mimic the parts of a great puzzle; purposeful, colorful and intended. His visually stunning graphics and use of vibrant, primary colors is almost as iconic as Andy Warhol’s use of shape and color contrasts. A now prolific Fauvist painter, Raoul Dufy started from humble beginnings in Normandy, France and later honed his skills on a scholarship at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. After years of delving in various styles (Fauvism, Cubism, and Impressionism), his own unique form emerged, recognisable by its bright, colourful, and cheerful energy, catapulting him to commercial success across various mediums. Now you can view a whopping 159 of his works at the museum, from paintings to ceramics, including the towering 2.2m by 2.7m The Kessler Family on Horseback, while taking in a vivid glimpse of French daily life in the early 20th century.

They all have roots in the Takarazuka Revue, the esteemed and sometimes controversial all-female musical theatre troupe. Since its opening in 1914, it has not only given the Osaka region countless original musical performances and a chance to view adaptations of Western musicals, but ample fodder for discourse and exploration of gender and “the perfect man”. Third Coast Kings Formed in 2007 by drummer James Keovongsak, Third Coast Kings describe themselves as “an eight element proper deep funk and soul outfit from Detroit that draws influence from the great James Brown, as well as the many artists from the 60s and 70s whose music was carefully salvaged by the crate digging revolution.”

Consisting of drums, sax, tenor sax, trombone, guitar, bass, vocals and trumpet the Kings released their debut album MO in 2010, closely followed by the acclaimed Give Me Your Love/ Tonic Stride.

Earlier this year saw the release of the band’s latest album West Grand Boulevard and the single Just Move proved to be a popular track on MTV Japan, so no doubt they’ll have an enthusiastic audience here.

Gotthard

Taking its name from the SaintGotthard Massif mountain range in the Swiss Alps, Swiss hard rock band Gotthard formed in 1992 and can rightly claim to be the country’s most successful rock outfit.

The band released their latest and eleventh studio album BANG! earlier this year. The title track is described as having “catchy hooks, wailing guitars and lush vocals, making it a song you will never forget.”

Gotthard’s line-up has been pretty solid since day one, after being formed by guitarist Leo Leoni, still a driving force in the band. He is joined by Marc Lynn (bass), Hena Habegger (drums) and newer additions Freddy Scherer (who replaced Mandy Meyer now with Unisonic) and vocalist Nic Maeder (coming in a year after the tragic death of original frontman Steve Lee in a motorcycle accident).

Mama’s Gun

Named after Erykah Badus’ 2000 album Mama’s Gun, this five-piece ‘electric groove’ band from London, England became the most played international band in Southeast Asia and Japan in 2009.

Following the success of the band’s debut release Routes to Riches and the follow-up The Life & Soul, a third album Cheap Hotel is being released this month. For a relatively new band on the scene, reviews have been very complimentary: “gorgeous, melting soft rock” (The Guardian, UK), “a masterclass in blue-eyed bubblegum soul, as heart-warmingly catchy as anything from Stevie Wonder’s 70s purple patch” (Uncut magazine).

Mama’s Gun plays two dates in Japan on the back of a UK tour with Lisa Stansfield, before returning to the UK for more shows.

Best known as the frontman and guitarist with post-grunge band Feeder, the debut solo album from Grant Nicholas was released last month titled Yorktown Heights.

The album was written and produced

by Nicholas in his own North London studio as well as some time in the US over a 13-month period. Early reviews of the release have been positive: “a first solo effort he can be proud of,” and: “It continues to surprise and sounds fresh throughout.”

On this new acoustic venture, Nicholas himself says: “Feeder is a great band to be in, but it requires a certain headspace. I wanted to clear my head a bit and write some songs, and this album just came along. It felt so natural because there were no expectations.”

Hattori Park in Osaka will host the Inochi no Nagisa Concert 2014, this mixed-genre daytime festival kicks off at midday until early evening. A number of artists will be taking the stage during the course of the afternoon and it looks set to be a great day for families and music lovers alike. Kansai Scene caught up with one of the artists performing on the day, singer-songwriter guitarist Hiroki Kurita, to find out a little more about the event. Hiroki Kurita is also the brainchild behind the event and has put together an organizing committee of 30 people.

Is this concert an annual event or will this be a once-off?

What was the inspiration behind making it happen?

The event will take place for the first time this year, but it will continue every year after this one. The theme of the event is summed up in a single word, ‘shine’. As musicians we want to shine in our own lives and have no limits. We hope to impress this theme on to our audience with such events so that they can be inspired to shine in their own lives.

There are a number of different musicians playing, what kind of music and styles can the audience expect to hear on the day?

Pop, rock, blues, jazz, instrumental, dance and steelpan musicians will be appearing in the event. It’s a concert for everyone. The concert MC will be DJ Hirano Satoshi of FM802 (Funky Music Station FM802 broadcasting around the Kansai region and sister station to FM Cocolo) so that has also given us some exposure. Japanese long-time steelpan player Muraji Susumu who has played steelpan globally and across Japan will also be assisting with MC duties as well as performing. Muraji recently appeared on the debut album

We’ve heard there will also be some stand-up comedy.

How will this be scheduled around the music?

Everything will be on the one stage. There will be dance shows and comedians in between the music performances whilst the next musicians prepare to play.
