STAGE 1:

ORIGINAL 2D WORLD

STAGE 2:

COMBINED WORLD Simplified Composition: When the two original 2D worlds are put together, there are lots of overlapping trees, which make the composition messive. In order to keep the composition clean, some trees are deleted, only those important few trees are kept.

Balance and harmony: Since there is a moutainous structure at the righthand side, I balaced it with a massive tree at the lefthand side.

Formal Contrast and variation: Some of the trees are more rounded, wich contrast with the trees that are angular.

STAGE 3:

FINAL COMPSITION Waterfall: to echo with the mountainous structure, but also serves as the barrier for Mario.

Gaming Element - Tunnel: to show the transition between two levels.

Gaming Element - Jumping Blocks: to indicate Mario’s route in his adventure in the gaming world

Resolved Structural composition: Comparing with the drawings, the triangular wall seems strange. Thus, I falttened it and make it thicker, and connect it with the moutainous structure thgough staircase form.

Thoughts and Process: In order to create a convincing 3D gaming world, theory of lights and shadows in painting is applied here. Since there’s no absolute black or white in painting, I used light yellow as highlight colour, mixed it with the original colour of the object for the illuminated part, and vise versa for the shadows. To show the graduation of light, I used gradient tool to make it looks blended.

INVISIBLE CITY ADELMA In Adelma, Marco Polo continuously encounter people who resemble people who have passed away. In my interpretation, it would onlt be possibel if Adelma is a city that exist in dream.

REFLECTION In this course, I have put a lot of effort in self-studying and exploration. I realise that what was taught in the class is very limited. In order to do well and push my standard, not only that there’s a need to explore the idea, but also to master with the hand and digital softwares. One thing I learnt from this course is that idea is not the most important, instead, the process of creation is the most important step in design. An idea could come out of my head immediately, but the creation requires consideration and usually takes a lot of time. There must be reason behind every thing I designed, everything needs to make sense. Although it is painstaking, but I do enjoy this process. I believed I have done my best for all four modules and I’m satisfied of what I have achieved within the time given. There’s definely room of improvement. For instance, in module 3 I used ivory cards of different weight. Unfortunately, the actual module is not consistent in colour.
