While it may be very tempting to look ahead to the future and your college career, try to make an effort every day to appreciate everything around you. Take some time to look at all the people, events, teachers and moments that you may never see or get to experience once your time at Kaneland is over. If you can be incredibly grateful for the people and culture around you while also being optimistic about the future, you will have a very fulfilling senior year of high school.
Over four years, there was so much stress, so many mistakes and so much going on. But I don’t regret my mistakes; they made me who I am. Make sure you’re the best you can be, whether it’s in sports, school, art, writing or anything, but that can be a lot. Our future isn’t promised. So live. Be yourself, and don’t worry about what other people think about you. This is a unique time in your life, and you only get so much time. So make sure you have fun.
Take time to be a kid for the last time. These are your last years without big adult responsibilities, so cherish that. Don’t be embarrassed; just do the thing because it’s fun. In all reality, nothing is as big of a deal as you might make it, and life is more fun when you’re living it.
If you’re given an opportunity to do something, do it. Don’t give excuses. Take advantage of every opportunity that comes your way, no matter what. If you don’t try anything new, you’ll never know what you may have missed out on. Live life with no regrets, no what ifs and especially without wonder of what could have been.
“It’s always no unless you ask.” This is a phrase that I live by, and I recommend every person apply it to their lives. There are so many opportunities that can be missed simply because we’re too afraid of rejection. Whether it’s your dating, school or professional life, this motto can be applied the same. Next time there is something you want, just ask! You’d be surprised how many times the answer is “yes” instead of “no.”
When we’re in high school, we’re stuck in a tight little bubble. We wake up, go to the same place, see the same people and live the same day over and over. In your spare time, find friends outside of your classes, and try not to stick to the same person the entire day. Make friends at your work, in sports and in new places. By growing your social circle, you’ll have an endless supply of support systems and connections. Be friendly, and don’t limit yourself.

In a few days, we will walk these halls for the final time. We have completed a significant portion of our academic, athletic, theatrical and creative journeys in this building. Even though we won’t be together in this physical space after this week, we will forever be Kaneland Knights.
This chapter is coming to an end, and we must make the most of it. Throughout this final week, we will be putting the past behind us and moving on to bigger and better things. All of our peers that we have been surrounded by for years will move on with their lives. We will no longer be those little kids playing on the playground or coming to high school for the first time, wondering if we’d survive. Our pasts won’t define who we are and who we are destined to become. Our futures are coming at lightning speed, and we must accept this rapid change and move forward.
Not only do we have to accept this quick progression into the unknown, we should reflect on and appreciate everything we’ve done to get to this point. We should appreciate the ups and downs we’ve experienced, reflect on the mistakes we’ve made and have no doubt that we will end up where we are meant to be. We should be proud of all the work and grit we’ve put in to get to where we are today. No matter the curveballs life threw at us, we got through it. Together. It’s time for all of us to realize that in a few days, we will no longer be surrounded by those who have been there for the past four years or even longer.
Our freshman year started with wearing masks and progressing into a world not completely controlled by COVID-19. When our first year as high schoolers came to an end, we finally understood what being an adult
might actually look like: the responsibilities we will hold, the effort we have to put in and the organization that is necessary for success. This realization brought us to our crazy, unique and unexpected sophomore year. With a fire in a bathroom and geese chasing us on the front lawn, we never knew what would come next. The typical high school movie was nowhere in sight. But we were still together. And together, we would face the dreaded, stressful and hectic junior year: preparing for the SAT, balancing life, arranging college visits, dealing with the challenges of each class and handling more work than we ever had in the past. The reality of our adult lives finally hit, and we were no longer those tiny freshmen that got pushed through the blender. Finally, the senioritis kicked in. At the ages of 17 or 18, we decided where we wanted to spend the next few years of our young adult lives. That has brought a lot of doubt and stress. But remember, it will all work out in the end. It might sound cliche to say that our final chapter is coming to a close. But that’s the reality. It’s over. We’re done. The day that goes through every high schooler’s mind the moment they first enter those front doors is actually happening. It’s hard to accept, but the reality is that this day has been creeping up on all of us. Slowly for some. Extremely quickly for others. No matter how much we’ve wanted this day to arrive, we can all agree on one thing: despite all the obstacles we’ve had, the journey was all worth it in the end. The opportunities we have been given, the forever friendships and relationships that we will cherish, and the fun, loving and unique memories we will carry with us forever all make up who we are today and who we are destined to become.
