District refutes ‘Goliath’ ad BY KIRSTEN FAURIE EDITOR@MORAMINN.COM

Tensions over the May 23, special election for the Mora High School bond referendum have brought battles of opinion to a head. That fight has turned into a battle over facts after recent publication of a “David vs. Goliath” advertisement. The advertisement, paid for by the friends of the KCRE — a group opposed to a new school, made statements regarding previous referendum attempts and a related lawsuit. Some statements the Kanabec County Times has confirmed as true and some statements as false. The ad was published in the April 27, edition of the Kanabec County Times and April 23, edition of the Advertiser. The ad alleges the Mora School District violated seven election laws and falsely claims a court ruled against the school district. The sevCraig Schultz en violations mentioned Mora Public Schools were investigated and Superintendent found not to be criminal and no court ever ruled against the school district. Here is what happened: On May 21, 2015, the Mora School District held a special election asking the public to approve two levies via two ballot

Knowledge grows as kids plant trees BY KIRSTEN FAURIE EDITOR@MORAMINN.COM

Fourth-grade students at Trailview Elementary School got dirty with DNR Forestry Specialist Tony Miller April 28, as they planted trees in the Trailview forest near the Jim McCollough Memorial Trail in honor of Arbor Day. Miller taught a crowd of enthu-

siastic kids (who were particularly energized over the discovery of some wiggly worms) how to choose a site, dig a hole deep enough for a healthy root system, plant seedlings at the proper depth near the crown and protect the seedlings from threats like lawn mowers and weed whips. Water levels in the Snake River watershed rise and fall rapidly due to its small watershed and well-timed rains are needed to produce great canoeing conditions. On May 1, the water level was at 4.4 feet and rising.
