Belkholms named Kanabec County Farm Family of the Year BY TERRY SALMELA NEWS@MORAMINN.COM
The Kevin and Tammy Belkholm family who farm in Grass Lake Township east of Brunswick is this year’s Kanabec County Farm Family of the Year. Kevin and Tammy met at college at the University of Minnesota Waseca where he studied agriculture and she studied horticulture. Kevin grew up on their current farm. Tammy grew up in Southern Minnesota in Blue Earth County. After being married they moved to the original Belkholm homestead to farm with Kevin’s parents, Chester and Violet Belkholm.
The Belkholm farm began with Kevin’s great-grandparents who moved to Grass Lake Township from Illinois in 1885. Kevin’s grandfather, Albert, later moved north a half-mile and started the dairy farm, building his first barn in 1936. Kevin’s parent’s, Chester and Violet, built the second, attached barn in the 1950s. Kevin built an addition in 1982. In 1996, Kevin and Tammy began the process of building a 300-cow free stall, double eight parallel parlor facility, fully utilizing the farm’s older tie-stall barn and loafing shed with additional free stalls, with a goal of increasing cow SUBMITTED

Food, frivolity found at county fair BY KIRSTEN FAURIE EDITOR@MORAMINN.COM
The annual Kanabec County Fair is keeping crowd favorites at the grandstand with mud trucks and more at the grandstand, as well as classic fair food, carnival rides and animals July 26-30. A new sight to see at the fair is the recently constructed goat barn. In previous years the goats were held in a tent but a recent grant and efforts of volunteers made way for the new permanent structure.

Paul Johnston, 47, of Ogilvie was found dead in Maple Ridge Township in Isanti County at approximately 12:16 p.m. Sunday, July 9. It appears Johnston’s death was the result of a motorcycle accident. According to a press release from the Isanti County Sheriff’s Office, at approximately 11:13 a.m., dispatch received a phone call to report that Johnston was riding his motorcycle and was overdue for arrival at his destination. Deputies were able to find Johnston’s location near the intersection of 385th Avenue NW and Lily Street by pinging his cell phone. A preliminary investigation shows that Johnston was traveling east on 385th Avenue when he failed to negotiate the curve in the roadway and struck a road sign. It is unknown if there were other contributing factors to the crash. The incident is still being investigated by the Isanti County Sheriff’s Office which will include an autopsy. A funeral service was held for Johnston Saturday, July 15, at Calvary Lutheran Church in Mora. Kirsten Faurie is the editor of the Kanabec County Times.
