Welcome to the 11th annual Kamloops Luxury Bridal Fair Welcome to the 11th Annual Kamloops Luxury Bridal Fair! The TRU Conference Centre and Viva Bridal are excited to bring you another fantastic year of everything weddings. On Sunday, Jan. 25, the doors and registration will open at 10 a.m., followed by a luxury fashion show, starting at 2 p.m. The fair features an array of exhibitors that will be showcasing their products and services among bridal fair attendees. “We average 50-60 exhibitors including photographers, décor companies, gowns, DJs, mortgage brokers, spas, beauty companies, venues, caterers and so much more. “It is truly a one-stop shop for all things wedding,” said Jenn Pallett, co-ordinator for the Bridal Fair and TRU Conference Centre events and catering. “Our exhibitors come equipped with samples of their product including fabric swatches, bakery items, catering food samples, makeup and displays.” This is the ideal venue for brides and grooms to get the most amount of information in one easy location, while being able to sample the products and services provided by these great local companies. The Bridal Lounge will once again be available for attendees to sit down with their entourage for a bite to eat or a beverage and review all the exhibitors they have met. It is the perfect opportunity to take a break and spend some quality time with the friends or family you bring along to help make those big decisions. This great fair wouldn’t be as successful without its amazing sponsors. This year the show sponsors

are Common Sound, providing DJ services; Aglow Bridal Boutique, decorating the Grand Hall; Interior Academy, providing hair and makeup for our models; First Comes Love Events & Gowns, providing Bridal Lounge décor; LB Photography, providing the poster photograph; Defining Décor, providing the entrance decor; Kamloops Florist Ltd., providing bouquets; Lee’s Music, providing AV; and Kamloops This Week, providing the Bridal Guides. They provide products and services that allow us to put on a great show. The TRU Conference Centre has once again hired three wonderful TRU students to assist in the planning and execution of this great event. Jared Byrne has returned to his

role of fashion show co-ordinator. Cassandra Okawa, who has organized and trained all of our volunteers, is our volunteer co-ordinator. Jennifer Brown has come on to assist us with social media and marketing as our marketing coordinator. The TRU Conference Centre is able to provide these students with real world experience in their areas of study. We encourage everyone attending to follow us on Facebook at Kamloops Bridal Fair, or to refer to our website, tru.ca/kamloopsbridalfair, for a list of all of our exhibitors and sponsors. On behalf of TRU Conference Centre, Viva Bridal, TRU student co-ordinators and our exhibitors, we look forward to seeing you at the Fair!

trend 2015 summer wedding trends

Soft, cool hues blended with subtle warm tones are the dominate colour schemes for the 2015 spring and summer wedding season. Top colors for the season include aquamarine (a sky/ sea blue), scuba blue (a vibrant shade), lucite green (a soft mint) and classic blue along with toasted almond (a warm tan), strawberry ice (think a pink glow), tangerine (a muted orange), custard (a subtle yellow), marsala (a muted wine) and glacier grey. Gold and silver, step aside, there’s a new metallic taking over. Copper details are popping up in creative ways, from glamorous chargers to centerpiece vases and copper foil on invitations. This metal meshes well with any wedding style. Polished copper can look glamorous and elegant, but matte or aged copper accents lend a rustic or vintage feel. Rose gold is a softer way to incorporate sparkle and works well when mixing with a light color palette. That makes it the perfect color to accent an outdoor spring or summer affair. The just-picked-from-the-garden look has been popular with brides and this gorgeous trend doesn’t look like it’s going anywhere soon. A soft and creamy colour

essential

Essentials of a dream wedding A wedding is the event of a lifetime. This special day has to be perfect, hence the importance of taking care of even the smallest of organizational details. You don’t want to forget anything, whether it’s a reservation, a fitting, or a trial run for your menu and hairstyle. Here’s a checklist of the 12 key elements you’ll need to take care of along the path to your dream wedding.

The ceremony, the officiant and the reception

Are you going to have a civil or religious wedding? Have you asked your best friend to unite you in wedlock? And will the reception be in the country, on a cruise ship or in a hotel ballroom? Make sure the location you choose can easily accommodate all your guests. You’ll also want to think about signing a marriage contract or prenuptial agreement.

The meal and the wedding cake

There are loads of things to think about when organizing the meal: The format, the menu, a children’s menu, the bar, and the wedding cake. Say, why not set up a candy bar? And don’t forget to ask about your guests’ food allergies.

The atmosphere

What theme will you choose to set the tone for your wedding: A colour, a culture, a historical period? Which DJ will get your guests out on the dance floor? Will you surprise everyone with a unique first dance?

Photographer

How will you immortalize your wedding: Photos, videos or both? Remember to plan for an indoor photo session in case Mother Nature doesn’t cooperate on your big day.

The invitations

Don’t wait until the last minute to send out your invitations if you want all the important people in your life to be with you for this celebration. Remember to indicate the theme and dress code. And do think about including self-addressed, stamped envelopes for those essential RSVPs.

Wedding bands

Your wedding bands are the symbols of your love; Choose them with care. Do you both want gold, silver, or with diamonds? Discreet or extravagant? With or without an engraving?

Beauty appointments

Hairstyle, manicure, waxing, and makeup — leave

nothing to chance if you want to be stunning on your big day. Make your appointments for just the right time; you don’t want your roots to be visible under your veil!

The dress, suit and accessories

The outfits of bride, groom, and wedding party should be co-ordinated. Will you be a vision in white or will you choose to add a colourful note? And will the perfect dress feature something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue?

Flowers and decorations

Have you chosen a colour scheme for your flowers and decorative accessories? What are your favourite flowers? How will the tables be dressed?

Transportation

Will you arrive by boat, car, horse-drawn carriage or maybe even by parachute? Whatever your choice, be sure to take your dress and the weather into consideration.

Guest favours

A personalized trinket, a gourmet sample, or a home decor object: Have you found the perfect wedding favour to thank your guests for joining you?

The honeymoon

A truly idyllic honeymoon shouldn’t break your budget. Are you tempted by an exotic island or a vibrant city? Choose the destination and the timing carefully to stay in line with your means.

Get out your calendar, get set and reserve

Make your reservations early in order to secure the top experts in every domain. Remember that their talents are in big demand.

An intimate event from page 7

wedding, offering infinite possibilities for staging stunning photographs. TRU’s Horticulture Gardens provide a uniquely beautiful setting for private events, such as wedding and receptions that allow you to create a truly one-of-a kind event in a breathtaking yet intimate environment. With the ceremony complete, all eyes turn to the wedding meal, both to please their palates and power them through a night of celebration and dancing. A great party is as simple as finding the right food to match an event’s style. Weddings are becoming more intimate with smaller numbers and an emphasis on really looking after each and every one of your guests. We are seeing a shift in event serving style, with a trend towards opting for small bites, tray-passed appetizers and family-style dining. TRU’s executive chef and staff provide a high level of culinary options, food presentation and quality, with pre-designed packages for your ease and convenience or custom designed menus to meet your specifications and budget. Let your inspiration run wild and creative side shine! There is so much inspiration out there you simply just have to look. Jody Peddle TRU Conference Centre

KAMLOOPS THIS WEEK - BRIDAL GUIDE

Don’t wait to make reservations Have you made the big decision to get married? Then there’s no time to lose, especially with regard to the venue for both the ceremony and the reception. It’s no secret that the best dates get snapped up quickly, especially for the most beautiful settings. Even the services of the marriage officiant should be reserved early. The first step is to determine whether you want a religious or civil wedding. Then comes the choice of reception venue. The possibilities abound: Reception hall, conference centre, restaurant, hotel, country inn, golf club, outfitter, ski resort, spa, vineyard, orchard, farm, sugar shack, museum, botanical garden, marina, cruise ship or cottage. The options depend only on your imagination. Narrow down your list of choices by finding out if they can accommodate everyone on your guest list. Ask about the services and equipment available, such as tables and chairs, decorations, catering, entertainment, liquor license, bathrooms, kitchen area, and audio and video equipment. Be sure to check what is and what isn’t included in the package.

planning

Smart wedding planning Those thinking about tying the knot in the months to come may be discouraged by how expensive weddings can be. But with a little ingenuity and a hands-on approach, couples can have a wedding that is inexpensive and memorable at the same time. According to CostofWedding.com, on average, U.S. couples spend $26,542 for their weddings. Weddingbells magazine states the average cost for a wedding in Canada is $23,330. These amounts do not include the cost for an engagement ring or wedding bands. With such a high price tag, some couples may wonder if they can afford their dream wedding or if there are ways to cut costs. Having a backyard, DIY wedding can be the answer. Although some may envision a backyard wedding with picnic benches and Dad at the grill, it can be a much classier affair than that. Smart couples are realizing that the money they would normally spend on a big wedding at an outside venue can be put to better use, either through buying a new home or fixing up one they may already own. Many items necessary for a wedding can be bought in advance. Some couples find purchasing low-cost items at discount stores turns out to be less expensive than renting. For example, inexpensive glasses and silverware can be bought at dollar stores or chains like Ikea. Later on, these items can be kept, sold or even donated to shelters. Tablecloths don’t have to be the traditional kind. It may be less expensive to purchase pieces of fabric from a fabric store and dressing them up oneself. Candles can be stockpiled and provide a very affordable means of ambient light. Plan out centrepiece ideas and figure out which components can be bought and stored. Then, items can be assembled at leisure. Wedding stationery is one thing that will have to be bought well in advance so there will be time enough to print save-the-dates, invitations and response cards, as well as mail them. An informal wedding may mean couples can get simple attire. Buying off the rack may mean a smaller price tag for gowns. Men may be able to fare with sportcoats and slacks. Purchase wardrobe essentials several months in advance to be sure there will be time for alterations,

if necessary. Enlist the help of family and friends to get many of the tasks completed. Upon asking, many couples find there are members of the family who have skills in certain areas, which can be tapped for the wedding. There may be a gourmet chef, a disc jockey, a photographer or even someone who can officiate the vows. Having these people on board means a great reduction in costs.

decorate

17

Decorating for your reception Whether your wedding reception is set to take place in a reception hall or at home, the decorations are a key element that should never be overlooked. Here are a few ideas:

Colour

Pink, blue, red, or gold: get out your colour charts to determine a colour scheme that will plunge your guests into your wedding theme.

A whole bunch of ideas

Garlands, topiary, bouquets, or delicately scattered flowers occupy a prominent place at any wedding. Some couples prefer top-quality silk flowers for their longevity, but most opt for natural flowers because of their fragrance and freshness. Some of the most popular flowers are red and white roses, tulips, lilies, azaleas and bluebells. Discuss your preferences with different florists before you choose which one to hire for your big day.

Other elements for a beautiful wedding

• Monograms. The initials of the newlyweds can elegantly personalize the reception venue and

the guest favours. • Fabrics. Dress the room from top to bottom in themeinspired fabrics. Ceiling and wall hangings give an imposing touch to your wedding. Use wrinkle- free cotton or satin fabric to dress up the tables. • Wedding lanterns. Hang these cozy lights high above your guests. Rice paper lamps diffuse harsh hall lighting and create magical surroundings. • Wall hangings. Garlands, pennants, beads, pompoms, and streamers add a whimsical touch to walls. • Table settings. Use fabric bows and slipcovers to transform plain chairs. Disperse bouquets, candle holders and other centerpiece features along the tables to bring coherence to the whole room.

The one-stop-shop venue One of the very first questions that come to mind when planning a wedding is, “Where are we going to get married?” This may be something you’ve never thought about before, or you may be the bride that has her venue picked out long before she is even engaged. Wherever your dream location may be, there are many things to keep in mind while making this important decision. Many brides prefer to have their wedding at a one-stop-shop location. Thompson Rivers University Conference Centre offers all the amenities to make this a possibility during the summer months. The horticulture gardens provide a picturesque backdrop for a beautiful wedding ceremony. Enjoy an outdoor cocktail hour and hors d’oeuvres before moving into one of the three beautiful banquet rooms. After a decadent dinner and a night of laughs, love and dancing, the bride and groom can take a quick stroll to their executive loft suite overlooking the city while the rest of the guests stay in comfortable and spacious

INDEPENDENT YOUNIQUE PRESENTERS

KAMLOOPS THIS WEEK - BRIDAL GUIDE guests to enjoy while the wedding party is out having photos taken. This will help ensure downtime is limited for your guests, which means more time for socializing and celebrating. • No transportation issues. When your guests check into their hotel they can leave their car keys in the room and turn off their GPS. No navigating is necessary to find the ceremony. Guests can cross the street to the reception and wander back to their rooms at the end of the night. This is convenient for your guests, but will also give you piece of mind knowing all your guests will arrive home safe at the end of the night. • On-site photography. For many couples photos are one of the most important elements of their day. However, couples don’t want to spend hours driving around to different locations while their guests are gathered and having fun. At TRU you have endless photo spots with beautiful flowers, greenery and views of the city all within walking distance. KAMLOOPS THIS WEEK - BRIDAL GUIDE

The do-it-yourself wedding From customized save-the-date cards and invitations to centerpieces, programs and menus, the hot trend for today’s brides and grooms is a movement toward the doit-yourself (DIY) wedding. Shelli Gardner, CEO and co-founder of Stampin’ Up!, a scrapbooking and crafting company, says “couples are looking to create a personal touch for their wedding celebrations to make them even more meaningful and memorable.” The days when a bride and groom would head out to their local stationery shop and select a design from the big book of invitations, menus, programs and thank-you cards are long gone, according to Gardner. Thanks to the large number of Internet resources and crafting companies such as Stampin Up!, couples now have infinite possibilities for designing and creating all the key elements of their wedding celebration, while also trimming money from their wedding budget. “With just a little creativity, you can customize every stage of the event, from invitations and décor to favours and thank-you cards to match the couple’s taste and unique style,” Gardner added. One of the most cherished DIY wedding items is

definitely personalized invitation cards. Handmade invitation cards are the first notification to guests of how much their presence is appreciated, with a display of thoughtfulness and creativity that can only come with one-of-a-kind custom made invitation cards.

Creative DIY ideas trending this year from page 20

Here are some other creative DIY wedding items trending this season with brides across the country: • Handmade dress silhouette thank-you cards for the wedding party — perfect for mom and your bridesmaids. • Gold sequin medallion guest cards using goldsequin trim and fancy foil-designer vellum. • A one-of-a-kind guestbook featuring engagement photos that you can create using Stampin’ Up!’s My Digital Studio! software. “It’s an intuitive design program featuring an array of colourful visuals that will help make your guestbook a treasured keepsake,” Gardner explained. • Glitter-edged custom dinner menus that bring “bling” to your tabletops. • Mr. and Mrs. Chair Banners and table numbers. • Custom printable ribbon belt or napkin ring place cards. • Personalized party favours: Delicious packaged coloured treats in a miniature paper box decorated with

wedding-themed stamps as cut-out shapes printed on paper with delicate patterns. For do-it-yourself brides looking for new techniques and inspiration for their custom wedding designs, Gardner suggests booking an appointment with a local demonstrator by visiting stampinup.ca.

Immortalize your wedding Your wedding is going to be overflowing with meaningful gestures: Bountiful affection, tender gazes, knowing smiles shared between the two of you, not to mention the kiss that seals your vows. Weddings are filled with a panoply of intimate moments that you’ll want to capture for posterity. If it’s documented well, it’ll be an exciting day that you can live and relive, over and over again.

A few clicks of the shutter

Make sure the best moments of your wedding are captured by a professional photographer who knows how to be unobtrusive. But, what if the weather’s bad and the lighting in the hall is terrible? Don’t panic. A photo session can be scheduled a few days before or after the wedding. A good photographer will know how to immortalize your union in an unusual and stunning way, worthy of a glossy magazine. With a photo booth and a few accessories at the reception, your guests can also pose for posterity. A few crazy snapshots will definitely help them remember the event. You can even ask your guests to send you a few of their favourite photos they took during the festivities.

A wedding filmed from every angle

Guest interviews, staging, backstage cameras at the ceremony — it sounds like Hollywood! A wedding videographer will trace the history of this unique day as if it were a movie. You’ll be filmed from the moment you start your wedding preparations with your bridesmaids, making the final product a treat for all the people you love. So, would you like a wedding album or a movie? Why not both?

Choosing a DJ The more professional and experienced your DJ is, the better your event will flow. Some feel that a DJ is not a key factor in their event and choose an inexpensive one. Don’t let a low price tag be your only reason for choosing your DJ. There are reasons why some DJs charge more than others. The more expensive DJs usually have more experience and have already established a good reputation. An experienced DJ can make it a memorable occasion for you and your guests. An inexperienced DJ can turn it into an unforgettable nightmare! A leading bridal publication says, on average, only five per cent of the wedding budget is spent on entertainment, but your guests will remember your entertainment choice over anything else in your wedding! Here are some suggestions to consider when you are selecting a DJ for your wedding: • How many years of experience does the DJ have and is it reflected in the cost? • Is your DJ licensed and insured? • Is backup equipment and a backup DJ available? • Are the equipment and lights of top quality? • What name brands do the DJs use? (i.e., RCF, JBL, QSC, Crown, Numark and Denon are top of the line).

For example, one small set of speakers in a large room ends up sounding like a ghetto blaster. • Ask the DJ if the music is licensed by AVLA. Suppliers like Multi-music, Promo Only, and ERG are licensed by AVLA. Playing burned music off the Internet is illegal. • How extensive and current is the music library? • Will they play requests? • Are they willing to travel? • Does the company require their DJ to dress appropriately? • Will the DJ handle emcee duties and interact with the party? • Is there an opportunity to view the DJ in action or meet with the DJ prior to the event? • Is uplighting available? • Are there any hidden costs, over and above the quoted price (like travel, overtime, etc.)? • Does the company have a screen or projector available? • Is there a deposit required? • When is the balance due? • Does the DJ have a time limit? If so, how long? • Are references available for the company and their DJs? • Book in advance! Tony’s DJ Service & Fiesta Sound Productions

Invite your guests to table What you give your guests to eat at your wedding reception shouldn’t be decided lightly, especially as the meal generally swallows up a large part of the wedding budget. Here are a few options:

A banquet

This is the classic wedding dinner format. It’s often preceded by a cocktail reception with appetizers and a cash or open bar. The meal, which includes several courses, is served to guests at their tables by wait staff. The cost varies according to the number of courses and the choice and variety of dishes on offer.

Tapas

It’s possible to replace the traditional three course meal with tapas, or as-sorted samples of different dishes. These can be a meal in themselves when served at the table and in sufficient quantities.

A cocktail party

This format involves an informal seating plan that allows guests to circulate and nibble on a variety of

finger foods throughout the evening. It’s a great way to encourage mingling among your guests.

A buffet

Simple and affordable, a buffet has the advantage of offering a wider variety of food. Guests get to serve them- selves, according to their specific tastes. Discuss the different options with the person responsible for the reception. Whatever format you choose, always provide options for the children and ask guests about allergies, intolerances and dietary laws. Think about whether you want to offer an open bar or a cash bar, and whether you want to serve a dessert in addition to your wedding cake. These days, other sweet ideas are gaining in popularity at receptions, including cupcakes and all-you-can-eat candy bars. Ask your caterer about all the latest trends.

KAMLOOPS THIS WEEK - BRIDAL GUIDE

Creating a memorable atmosphere What makes one wedding more fun than another? There’s no need to look far: the secret is in the atmosphere. Here are some tips on how to organize a memorable wedding reception:

Theme

Begin by choosing the theme that will be the foundation of the wedding. This will guide you through your clothing and decorating choices, and it will even determine the wedding favours you offer and the meal the caterer serves. The theme can be a colour or combination of colours, an era or a season, a country or a culture, an object or a shared passion. Above all, it should reflect both your personalities.

Entertainment and music

If you hire an entertainer along with your DJ or musicians, you’ll have more fun at your late amongst your guests, and there won’t be any uncomfortable lulls. A good DJ is a facilitator who can adapt to the age and tastes of the guests and keep the momentum going. Just be sure that anyone you hire can entertain according to your theme. Some ideas for surprising your guests:

• Plan a unique arrival at the reception. • Set up a photo booth with wacky accessories. • Provide a guest book that can be a decorative item in your home after the reception. • Work out a dance routine to perform together or with your wedding party. • Have a karaoke machine for later on, at the reception. • Release disposable lanterns into the sky when it gets dark, or plan some fireworks.
