2020/21 Season
Dina Gilbert | Music Director
Welcome to our
2022–2023 season!
Yes, we are back and couldn’t be happier to share a full season of exciting programming with you! Attending a live concert is always an opportunity to take a break from our ever-busy lives and experience a moment of relaxation, bliss or...astonishment. Get ready to be uplifted, moved, and inspired by our 2022/23 Season. From performing works of Mozart to Philip Glass, to sharing the stage with outstanding guest artists, every concert of our 46th season will highlight the outstanding quality of our orchestra’s musicians. We open our season with the New World Festival. Over this multi-day event, you will not only get to hear some of Dvořák’s greatest works, but you will experience your orchestra with a Hip-Hop twist, thanks to Cree artist K.A.S.P. Always eager to present works by talented Canadian composers, we will perform works by Samy Moussa, Kelly-Marie Murphy, and Violet Archer. The KSO Chorus will also join us for two remarkable works: Brahms’ German Requiem as well as Beethoven's beloved Symphony No. 9. In our pops series, Jim Witter makes his return to Kamloops to pay tribute to Elton John & Billy Joel and Juno nominee Sarah Slean joins us for International Women’s Day with a selection of her own songs and Joni Mitchell favourites. Finally, “Thorgy and the Thorchestra”, a one-of-a-kind concert, will feature the fierce and fabulous drag queen Thorgy Thor! The musicians of the orchestra and I are eager to share these concerts with you, where high artistry will bring electricity to the stage! And we can’t wait for you to join us. DINA GILBERT Music Director
The Kamloops Symphony is honoured to perform within Secwépemc'ulucw, the unceded traditional lands of the Secwépemc peoples.

The Kamloops Symphony kicks off their season with an exciting multi-event festival showcasing the works of Antonin Dvořák—with some modern twists. Cellist Stéphane Tétreault and Cree hip-hop artist K.A.S.P. help elevate the festival, and a one of a kind Jam Session invites amateur musicians to join forces with the orchestra. The Kamloops Symphony examines the concepts of “new” and “old”, and related cultural implications in this multi-day festival.

Poem for Orchestra Symphony No. 9
New to the Symphony? We get it. To outsiders, classical music can seem like an ancient ritual, or something only enjoyed by members of special club. But we don’t want it to be. Below are the two most asked questions people have before attending their first classical music. What should I wear? First and foremost, you should be comfortable. We don’t have a dress code, so wear what feels right to you. If you want a good excuse to dress to the nines, go for it. Or if you would prefer to keep it casual, you won’t be the only one dressed down. We’re happy to have you join us and hope that you have a wonderful concert experience; your concert attire doesn’t matter. When should I clap? Audiences used to be rowdier at classical concerts, and then around the 20th Century the “new normal” became to wait until a piece was finished before applauding. The problem is not everyone knows about this unwritten rule. Generally, if a piece has multiple movements (think different chapters in a book) most people now wait until they are completed before applauding. That said, if you feel moved to applaud before one of these "allowed" times, feel free to do so. Our musicians won’t care. In fact, they are probably going to be quite pleased to hear that you are enjoying the performance. We can’t wait to welcome you soon.
