About
The Kamloops Symphony engages, enriches, educates, and inspires through the power of music… even in difficult and complex times. The 2020-21 Season was a tumultuous and complicated year for arts organizations across the world. The COVID-19 Pandemic challenged us all, particularly for those who traditionally perform for live in-person audiences. But thanks to creative planning, bold leadership and the extensive support from the community, the Kamloops Symphony not only persevered, but ultimately became a stronger, more dynamic and more competent organization throughout the year. We made the rapid transition to digital programming, being one of the first orchestras in the province to launch high-quality digital content and one of the few orchestras in Canada to produce a full season, with nine full concert experiences. We worked with local and international artists in innovative ways (in some cases without even having to worry about travel), collaborated with local artistic partners, including Western Canada Theatre, the Kamloops Art Gallery, and even saw ourselves on the big screen thanks to the Kamloops Film Society. We released many free digital initiatives and launched the KSO Wellness Lab. We also “ran” a successful fundraising campaign that garnered national media attention and offered three different versions of Barb’s Used Book & Music Sale. This is all while operating a music school through both in-person and virtual offerings. We are the first to admit that there were several learning moments along the way, but most significantly, we know that none of this would have been possible without you: our loyal patrons and community partners. So thank you for trusting us, and coming along for the ride.

Message from the Music Director “My freedom will be so much the greater and more meaningful
the more narrowly I limit my field of action and the more I surround myself with obstacles. The more constraints one imposes, the more one frees one’s self of the chains that shackle the spirit” – Igor Stravinsky This past season has been transformative in so many ways. I recall the moment when I realized we needed to change our previously planned 2020-21 season to allow our orchestra to perform safely without any artistic compromises. Surprisingly, I felt confident with the uncertainty, knowing the Kamloops Symphony was an agile and dynamic organization. Supported by its talented and engaged musicians, its hard-working and compassionate team members and its encouraging board members, we were all driven by a common purpose: the importance of sharing music with our community. Programming that would reflect on our time Taking inspiration into Stravinsky’s own experience of fulfilling his artistry through the Spanish flu of 1918, we opened our season with The Soldier’s Tale. Joining forces with Western Canada Theatre’s team and fabulous artistic director James MacDonald and up-and-coming dancer Lauren Okano was extremely special after months without the possibility of performing. It was also in response to the pandemic that we announced our new experimental outreach series, the KSO Wellness Lab, which among other initiatives, provided free chamber music performances to various audiences as a universal therapeutical tool in these challenging times. Recreating the concert experience and reconnecting with our audience Although perhaps contradictory, facing several constraints gave us the courage and freedom to explore new format and initiatives in a creative way. Throughout the season, we delivered vibrant programming, exploring multi-disciplinary concert experiences that featured a wide range of musicians, soloists and artists. We also maintained the connection between our audience and our musicians through KSO Front Row. This outreach activity was an occasion for our audience to discover our musicians’ and guest artists’ personalities, their musical journeys, in addition to providing more insight on the works performed in our season. Innovating through multi-disciplinary concerts All year long, we learned and explored new ways of delivering our digital concert experiences. We exposed our public to immersive and original concert experiences with our multi-angles screening of the film the Phantom of the Opera with live accompaniment of Gabriel Thibaudeau’s soundtrack. Furthermore, adding the high artistry of sand artists Marina and Eva Sosnina in Sounds in Sand brought a refreshing visual perspective on Iman’s Habibi Radiant Light and Julian Yu’s epic rendition of Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition.

Spotlight on exceptional and essential artists The pandemic outlined the fragility of our artists’ place in society. Recognized as the premier professional music provided in BC Interior, it was a priority for us to provide a maximum of opportunities to musicians, soloists, and various artists to share the stage with our orchestra. In these circumstances, it also felt natural to present an increased amount of vibrant works by Canadian composers as well as to count on the expertise of a local audio and video team for delivering our signature concert experiences. Over the season, we hosted remarkable soloists such as stellar Marina Thibeault for the performance of Vasks’s Viola Concerto, the remarkable vocalist Csetkwe Fortier in a new arrangement of Katia MakdissiWarren’s Whispers of the Mountain and soprano Sinéad White and countertenor Shane Hanson in a soothing and touching performance of Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater. We also had the pleasure of working with the Cory Weeds Quartet for live editions of songs from the beloved album Charlie Parker with Strings. Our own KSO musicians Marea Chernoff, Heather Beaty and Elyse Jacobson shined in works by Canadian composers Bill Douglas, John Burge and Julie Thériault. The high artistry of our principal musicians was also featured through chamber music performances of works by Jacques Hétu, Marjan Mozetich, Kevin Mulligan and Dinuk Wijeratne. Finally, we closed our season with Still, a commissioned work to Kamloops-born composer Stacey Brown which was described as “a focus inward, a self-awareness”. An orchestra engaged in its community Our orchestra also had the pleasure to collaborate with the Kamloops Art Gallery, performing Raven Chacon’s work American Ledger No. 1. Presented as part of the Soundings: An Exhibition in Five Parts, this performance allowed our musicians, alongside Secwépemc artist Chris Bose and the Fierce Unicorn Shadow Masterminds Collective, to bring to life the meaningful narrative of this graphic score exploring colonialism. Finally, our musicians were also featured in other free digital experiences, be it as part of our Christmas Variety Show, or on the big screen as part of the Kamloops Film Festival. Considering this incredible and transformative season, I am extremely proud of and grateful for everything we have accomplished, thanks to the driven force of every member of our team under the skillful guidance of Executive Director Daniel Mills, as well our ever-supportive board members. Finally, at the core of our success, I would like to outline the incredible resilience, flexibility and generosity of our musicians who have been navigating diligently through the year, allowing us to deliver such a memorable season to our audience. Thank you!

Message from the Executive Director The Kamloops Symphony’s 2020-21 Season could be described as a series of experiments, some big, some small, one after the other. To be truthful, we did not know how the year was going to end, but we knew it was going somewhere. As the Kamloops Symphony responded to new restrictions, and changing circumstances, it was felt in all areas of our operations, and we developed the necessary skills to quickly adapt. Ultimately, we produced a full season of engaging and creative programming, which so few orchestras in Canada were able to do, and is something I will be very proud of, knowing how difficult it was under the circumstances. Over the year, health and safety became a top priority, and we became well attuned to how policies and practices had to be implemented. Special thanks to all who followed the ever-evolving policies so diligently, whether it was the musicians and artists, our faculty, guardians and students, our staff and our many production partners. Acclaim must also be given to our administrative team, who worked so well at adapting their practices to the reality and were forced to take on new challenges and skills to allow us to continue. We were particularly proud this year to grow our team of employees to four members. Thanks in part to the Canada Summer Jobs Grant, we were able to bring Evan Ren on to the team in what eventually became the role of our Operations Coordinator. This role filled a crucial need as the productions of our digital presentations were much more complex than we had dealt with previously. On the Fundraising front, we felt the absence of our regular annual fundraiser, the Mayor’s Gala for the Arts, and were also forced to reimagine Barb’s Used Book & Music Sale in three different reiterations. However, Running the Symphony, and my quest to run every single street in Kamloops as a fundraiser for the Symphony, gave us a well needed boost, and something novel to talk about. Having the crucial supporters cheer me on as I tackled various roads in very different conditions was truly a highlight of the year. Finally, we were thrilled to be named Not-For-Profit of the Year, at the 2020 Chamber of Kamloops Business Excellence Award. Although awarded in October 2020, when much of the year had yet to come, this was an incredibly welcome surprise, that helped give us the confidence to get through the remainder of the Season. All in all, it was a truly remarkable year for the organization, with incredible growth in the face of adversity. However, we are also hopeful to not have a year like this again. Because with all the positives, there were also incredibly challenging moments felt across the organization as we navigated realities. Above all, we missed our audiences and patrons. And even though we might not have seen most of you in person, you were certainly not forgotten. However, we have persevered, grown, and are ready to reconnect, and take on the challenges to come. With gratitude,
Daniel Mills Executive Director Kamloops Symphony Kamloops Symphony Society - 2020-21 Annual Report Page 5
Message from the Outgoing President It was a great privilege to serve two terms as President of the Kamloops Symphony Society. I would like to express my deep gratitude to fellow Board members for their support, collegiality as I joined the board in 2017 as a newcomer to Kamloops. We worked together as a coherent group to transition Kamloops Symphony into a professional orchestra, extended the contract with the Music Director Dina Gilbert, hired new Executive Director Daniel Mills, developed organizational policies to provide guidance, consistency, efficiency and clarity on how we function as one of the leading arts and music educational organizations in the region. We are now set up for further growth to extend our outreach beyond the city borders and Salmon Arm and to establish our presence in the surrounding rural areas as well. Reflecting on our 2020-21 Season, we have much to be proud of. Thanks to our many supporters in the community, and the tremendous assistance of our government funders, we were able to weather the storm. Under the capable hands of our administrative team, we managed to pull off a Season unlike any other. And thankfully, the public responded positively. Thank you for the opportunity to be part of such a great organization and for the wonderful memories as well.

Concert Experiences Main Series Over the 2020-2021 Season, the Kamloops Symphony showcased many genres and styles, diverse guest artists, presented as high-quality concert experiences. With the inability to host live in-person audiences, we made the rapid transition to a digital Season, choosing to record and film our productions with professional camera and audio crews, professionally edit them, and make them available online for a period of 30 days each. We also experimented with showing them on the big screen in the Paramount Theatre in Kamloops, as restrictions allowed. Ultimately, we were able to produce nine of these full-length concert experiences in the Season, matching artistic output of a regular year.

Based on Gaston Leroux’s 1910 novel, The Phantom of the Opera is a 1925 American silent horror film about a deformed Phantom who haunts the Paris Opera House, causing murder and mayhem in his attempts to make the woman he loves a star. The film remains famous to this day for star Lon Chaney’s ghastly, selfdevised make-up. As part of his illustrious 30-year career as a silent film accompanist, Canadian composer Gabriel Thibaudeau penned a chilling new score to accompany the gothic tale of The Phantom of the Opera in 1990. Thompson Nicola Regional Library Partnership We partnered with the Thompson-Nicola Regional Library (TNRL) to make our virtual concerts available to the community. Thanks to the generous support of sponsors and donors, we were able to provide TNRL users access to archived recordings of earlier concerts. Their platform made our content viewable by those who might not otherwise have an opportunity to see the Symphony perform, be it for geographic or socioeconomic reasons. This partnership was especially beneficial in reaching all those in urban areas outside of Kamloops within the TNRD

KSO Wellness Lab The KSO Wellness Lab was a new initiative launched in the 2020-21 Season, to promote wellbeing through music. Music is proven to be a universal aid in the service of positive change. It is a well-known therapeutic tool for individuals suffering from depression, anxiety, and other conditions. As well, musical talent and interest can emerge from a variety of backgrounds. By sharing positive stories, featuring inclusive and diverse musicians and talent, the KSO Wellness Lab aims to inspire and uplift our community. On September 25-27 of 2020 we officially launched the KSO Wellness Lab with a series of free string quartet pop-up performances throughout Kamloops, and a Pro-Am Jam session. At the end of the season, we recorded a string quartet performance in Salmon Arm, and presented a live-streamed Spring Winds concert.

Additional Recorded Content In addition to the online concert experiences, we were thrilled to provide other content. Particularly moving was our participation in a performance in collaboration with the Kamloops Art Gallery, and their exhibition Soundings: An Exhibition in Five Parts, this collaboration brought together 19 performers, including orchestral musicians and members of the Fierce Unicorn Shadow Masterminds Collective, along with Secwépemc artist Chris Bose, to perform Raven Chacon’s American Ledger (No. 1), 2018, a narrative score charting the history of the United States of America.
We were also thrilled to provide online and on-screen content for the Kamloops Film Festival, in collaboration with the Kamloops Film Society, to feature some well-known movie tunes ahead of films in their festival. Finally, we also took the opportunity to record other standalone chamber music for occasions such as Canada Day, and Remembrance Day.

Kamloops Symphony Music School
At the end of the 2019-20 school year, the Kamloops Symphony Music School was operating entirely online. Over the summer months, with new safety protocols and new protective barriers in place, we made the slow return to in-person lessons, keeping the online options for those who requested it. Ultimately, the music school broke all-time revenue targets, and had a very successful year. In the fall, we welcomed Bailey Finley to the Music Faculty as a flute teacher, and had over 260 students taking lessons through school. In 2020-21, we were able to award two scholarships from the Peter Collins Memorial Fund for students pursuing post-secondary education in Music. We were proud to announce Miranda Maher and Xavier Myles Marican as the winners of the award, as part of a virtual recital that took place in June 2021.
Fundraising & Community Support Like the rest of our operations, our Fundraising efforts underwent many changes in the 2020-21 Season. In term of individual philanthropy, we raised over $90,000 in receipted donations, through our regular campaign and special initiatives.

Barb’s Used Book & Music Sale Barb’s Used Book & Music Sale, our beloved fundraisers, underwent three different iterations throughout the season, as we responded to evolving restrictions. In August 2020, we presented the pop-up Summer Edition, hosted in our offices and music school, as a means to recoup the sale we were not able to host in Spring 2020. A more typical sale took place in November 2020, which unfortunately had to be closed down on the 10th day of its 15-day run, due to evolving restrictions involving events. Finally, in the spring of 2021, with event restrictions still in place, we went with our third iteration of the Sale, a special Mixed Bag edition of the sale, when book lovers got to pre-order special bags of 10 or 20 books, curated by our fantastic group of volunteers. Although we me may not have made as much money as a typical year, we were very grateful to experiment with new types, and like so many other areas of our operations, the experimentation was well received.
Running The Symphony Throughout our 2020-21 Season, our Executive Director Daniel Mills pledged to run every road in Kamloops as a fundraiser for the Symphony. Starting in August 2020 at the site of the very first rehearsal for the Kamloops Symphony, he took to Kamloops one street at a time, finishing with a full marathon ending at the Sagebrush Theatre, on January 20th, 2021. After 83 runs, on 72 days, covering over 938 km and 11,900 m of elevation gain, he successfully raised over $25,000 for the orchestra, the first $5,000 of which from first-time donors to the Kamloops Symphony was generously matched by long time symphony patron Rae Nixon. The initiative was very successful, and garnered national media attention for the organization.

Financial Position The Society has a strong financial position with cash of $289,000 and net assets of $194,000 at June 30, 2021. There was a significant drop in ticketing revenues from the prior year, attributed to the transition to online performances and lower ticket prices. This drop was largely offset by emergency government funding, along with the careful reduction of production expenses. At year end, the decision was made to internally restrict $94,000 of the government funding for a future Season, acknowledging that there may be significant challenges to come amidst the transition back to live audiences.
